I had never heard of this song until my girlfriend sang it to me one evening. We were walking her dog on the beach at sunset. She sang it slowly in the style of an old couple with exaggerated southern drawls. Vividly, I pictured an old husband and wife singing it to each other on their farm.. It was priceless. So endearing. Ocassionally, I would request it, but only when the time was right. Some of the best times of my life.
The youth at my church used to honor their parents with an annual banquet complete with comedy skits. Two boys, one dressed as a farmer and one as his wife performed this song and the parents were laughing until they were crying.

If only we learned from the past when looking to the future; it’s absolutely beautiful when people come together like this. Odetta was incredible, too.
This was my mother's favorite song, from the album Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall. My Mom always played this, and I learned all the words and would sing it with her. I was born in 1961 but remember it so clearly. I still have my Mom's album, and I'm not sure where, but somewhere in The Village we saw them perform this, I was probably only 5 but I remember it so clearly. Through all these years I searched for a video, thinking I would find one from Carnegie Hall, but I never did. Until now. This is the first video I've ever seen of this, so thank you!!!

My mom sang this song to me growing up. I never heard it in real life until today and I am in my 50s smh- I guess I just never bothered to look it up until it came to mind just now. I also used to sing it to my little sister when she was a toddler and she could never get enough. Now that I looked it up, it makes sense that my mom would sing it because she is a Harry Belafonte fan. So glad I found this. Memory Lane!

We sang this in elementary school with the small change that we said knife instead of axe. Also, I like this rendition because you can tell that he's thought everything through and you can see from her expression that she thinks she has an easy fix to everything he says and she's a little annoyed with him for not having thought everything through himself, but he just goes to show her things aren't always as simple as she thinks they are.
I’m nearly eighty years old, but I first heard these geniuses perform this song only a few days ago. I never knew that Odetta was so beautiful, and I never fully appreciated how handsome and talented Mr Belafonte was. I’m thrilled
The new generation won't have any of their songs playing this many years after them. This is music that lives on...🤣🤣Harry Belafonte is one of my favourites...
"A Hole in the Bucket," is a children's song written circa 1700. It is a dialogue between two characters, Henry[a] and Liza, about a leaky bucket. Various versions exist but they differ only slightly, all describing a "deadlock" situation essentially as follows: Henry's bucket leaks, so Liza tells him to repair it. To fix the leaky bucket, he needs straw.
The earliest known archetype of this song seems to be in the German collection of songs Bergliederbüchlein (c 1700). It is set as a dialogue between a woman named Liese, and an unnamed man

So enjoyed that. Such fun and so well done.
We sang this in elementary school with the small change that we said knife instead of axe.
Also, I like this rendition because you can tell that he's thought everything through and you can see from her expression that she thinks she has an easy fix to everything he says and she's a little annoyed with him for not having thought everything through himself, but he just goes to show her things aren't always as simple as she thinks they are.
some of the oldest version of the song use knife and straw to fix the hole
Love it. How in the world can anyone find enough cause to dislike? Let alone 13 anyone's?? Misery is a self induced option, not an emotion.
They’re nobody’s.
I immensely enjoyed this
@Mark Honest great, I hope u r 2
@Mark Honest jamaica
Discovered this song during my job for eldery, they really know what music means, happieness and joy ❤
I've heard this song all of my life, but never so delightfully sung as this (and from two of my favourite singers, no less)!
Love this x
i love how he came out the window 🤣
"A Hole in the Bucket," is a children's song written circa 1700. It is a dialogue between two characters, Henry[a] and Liza, about a leaky bucket. Various versions exist but they differ only slightly, all describing a "deadlock" situation essentially as follows: Henry's bucket leaks, so Liza tells him to repair it. To fix the leaky bucket, he needs straw.
The earliest known archetype of this song seems to be in the German collection of songs Bergliederbüchlein (c 1700). It is set as a dialogue between a woman named Liese, and an unnamed man
That was absolutely delightful 🙂
Fantastic...
*I enjoyed watching Harry do this piece in Noway where he has an elaborate new beginning to this song. Now I watch with different emotions laughter and tears. Sleep well my dear friend Harry Belafonte*
RIP legend Mr. Belafonte. We are so fortunate to live during his era. What an entertainer!!! Unique style. One and only Harry Belafonte.
Haven't heard this song since childhood in school. Don't think I heard the whole thing. First time...thank you
How they kept their faces straight I'll never know!
Merci beaucoup.
