Ep091 How Thick Is My Cat's Hull? - Life On The Hulls - Catamaran Build Project

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 พ.ย. 2024
- To work out exactly the thickness of the keel line of our Catamaran Hull, I found the test piece I made for the Australian Maritime Safety Test yet to be submitted. I also make a huge template for the rear of our catamaran and spend time with family in sunny England. I hope you enjoy this weeks episode.

Just a thought. You do realize that most people from windy, rainy, hills of the good old country, go to Australia on vacation?? Lol
However, I must presume that living in paradise, day in and day out, tends to make one homesick for the dark, damp, dreary, days of home!!! Hahaha, Janet, I bet you were glad to get back to paradise!!
I can fondly remember the family vacations to the beaches of Florida, the salt water, and the sun, and wondering what the local people did on their vacations! I can remember imagining them going to the big cities, pouring bags of sand on the floors, and into their clothing, playing unending sounds of the ocean waves on the stereo, spraying the aroma of the salt air around, and leaving the sun lamps on, in every corner! Ahhhh, the good ole days, learning to live with the taste of sand, the feel of sand in the toilet paper, the sound of sand scrubbing your skin off, between the bed sheets, the horrors of sand blowing into your eyes, and up your nose! Why do I suddenly have the desire to go to the beach??
Hopes that you had a great visit with your family!! CHEERS!!!
Janet is with you buddy. She moved here 30 years ago and loves going hime to visit family but is now truly Australian and loves it here with no regrets.I can't imagine not having sand under my feet, and in my sheets and floorboards. In fact we have a dune restabilization program going on in our backyard from the sand we bring hone in our fleet of sea kayaks.Hah.Rossco
Good episode Ross
That bulkhead template really gives some perspective to how the boat is going to look and the sense of space.
Certainly does Stephen.I immediately had a better picture and the ability to think through the layout and extra partitions required.Cheers .Ross
hello sir,i did watched allmost all your videos, and i do admire your lust in working,oh my god,you sure did a super job in making this whole cat like new,and way better,i am ver handy myself and i am building a boat of my own,i do use your videos to increase the experiences of your work, into my buildings of my boat, only difference isyou uses green strong foam,i use 2 layer pf 5 mm plywood
Ok Ross, now you officially have to make a T-shirt that we all can buy to sponsor you: "All things being equal, it should be identical.” Best fucking quote ever :) Love it!
That is very funny Morgan.Cheers buddy.Ross
Great video, Thanks for taking us on vacation. Gene
Ross I HOPE and PRAY when I'm 50+ I get around as good as you! You never stop moving. I Love your motivation and work ethic Sir. Thanks for sharing!
Great video Ross glad you got some much deserved holiday with the wife and decent weather here in the UK.
Thanks Sean.Had an awesome trip.Timing was perfect.Cheers Buddy.Ross
Thanks for the video.
Welcome to my part of the world , hope you had a great time
We love going home to the north west coast.I have spent a dea l of time up there a nd it is so beautiful, especially the lakes. Not sure I could used to the traffic in Britain though.Cheers a nd thanks for watching. Rossco
Great progress as usual fella, Great to see templates in there, adds a lot to layout
Thanks Tim.Certainly started to put things in perspective for me.Cheers Ross
There could never be a doubt about the quality of your work mate!
Great vid as always, grtz from holland
She is really starting to come together. keep up the great work
Cheers Nathan
Love the landscape! looks like you had a beautiful and windy trip. Looking forward to seeing more of the footprint evolve, the template really defines the shape of whats to come. Love the Videos Rossco ! Keep up the great work!
Another great video! Really enjoy your travels! Hope to go to the UK someday as all my ancestors are from there, it looks amazing! Don’t believe I could fly as far as y’all do that’s why I am glad you make these trips and share them with us! Cheers
The flight is a killer bit it really is worth the day of angst and discomfort to experience the beauty of the lake district.Cheers Robin
Always a good one, Rossco. Looking forward to the next installment: Life on the Hells. ❤️
Thanks Trane Plenty coming up buddy.Ross
This (woven roving layup with layers of long-strand mat) actually looks like what we did BEFORE chopper guns became popular. Except we used to build it up on monohulls to about 5/8 inch / 16mm thick. At 8 mm I'd be happy with strength, but a little worried about rigidity. But that's a monohull. A cat hull has smaller bends and is more self-reinforcing. Watch it to make sure it doesn't 'oil-can' flex when you're going over waves, because if it does that eventually builds up material fatigue and fails.
A clean catamaran is a happy catamaran (or building site). So much preparation work, but nice results.
Love a clean worksite. I know it can be counterproductive but cleaning is something I must do.All the best Ross
Great vid mate just great to see it coming together, reason the beaches are so clean up there, nothing sticks it's blown away.
cheers.
I believe it.Windy as hell up there.Cheers .Ross
No bilge work! I'm sure your happy about that!! Sunny England that's funny looks like you were pressure washed:) Thanks Ross and Janet
It was sunny one day, tempest the next.Crazy weather up there but loved every minute of it.Cheers Duncan.Ross
Nice video Ross
That sample you cut out looks like a very strong lamination.
Beatyful aerea you were out walking in.
All the best.
Cheers Martin. The Lake District is sensational buddy.Jump across the pond and spend some time there.Cheers Ross
@@LifeOnTheHulls i would love to. :-)
I think one of the biggest Q’s on my mind since watching the start of all this, is how you are going to ensure the deck section is going to correctly fit onto the hull sections when adding bulkheads etc. If anyone has the tenacity and balls to sort that out its you Ross...
If it fails, next time try Steel, like svseeker...lol...jk Rosco, your building a bomb shell of a Cat and I'd bet it would withstand a direct hit on a Jellyfish no problem. Keep the fun going, it was a hoot !!
I certainly hope it can withstand as jellyfish collision.Cheers Barton.Ross
Ah Ullswater, my favourite lake! Can’t believe how thin the hull is - it would be really interesting to watch it being tested, hope you get some data back in the test results rather than just ‘it passed’.
Loiuse.Janet and I had our honeymoon in Ambleside and spend a week in the Lakes each time we visit family.Absolutely love the Lakes and Ullswater. Not sure I will get a pictoral record of the Amssa testing process and is going to cost about 2000 aud for the privilege.Hah.Ross.
@@LifeOnTheHulls Ah, the certification industry. There is a licence to print money if ever there was. You look like the type of people who could have a good time in a telephone box. Its all about attitude and you got buckets of it. Take care and keep going.
I totally hear you Steve.
Great video
Cheers Brad.Rossco
Good one Ross!
Thanks Spike.Rossco
trying to get a little bit of a better feel of where you stand!,i know the feeling!,i am curently building a bruce roberts semi displacement hulled catamaran at home in perth wa.My boat is 11.2m by 5.25m beam it is a motorsailor design. My laminating schedule is solid vinylester with 450 gram csm and 480 gram uniderictional fabric. My hull is approx 10mm thick of solid laminate and my bulkheads are 18 mm ply following a 3 combination layer of the forementioned csm and fabrics.I am going to renforce the bulkheads, stringers, webs and bottom of hull with a couple more layers of fabric and one more layer of chop, mine is not a racing vesell but live aboard cruising!
I was working on a 150” Wally yacht build many years ago and had to cut through the keel when mounting a large bow thruster up front. The slab that we cut out was over 50-60mm thick and weighed over 20kg. The bottom most plies being glass around 20mm thick the rest being the overlapping joint carbon plies of the two sides of the hull joint. Different beasts I know...
That is a seriously thick hull Ian. Was it all glass or a combination of wood as well.Sounds like a nasty job.Cheers .Ross
Hi Ross, each side of the hull was carbon prepreg with various core materials, mainly HD foam. Along the keel there was no core, just the overlap of the two sides of the hull. Not sure how wide the overlap-joint itself was. The glass layer was up to a couple of meters wide in places.
We weighed the hull complete with most bulkheads, main deck and Diesel engine came out at 36 ton iirc, big old girl, 148’, called SAUDADE.
Nice video Ross! I was actually born In Whitehaven just up the road not far from Sellafield. Nigel
I love Whitehaven We have spent a few weeks up north and love the region around Muncaster. My brother in law Steve worked in Whitehaven for years commuting from Barrow.Cheers buddy.Ross
Man you’ve lost quite a bit of weight. Looking good. Getting in shape for when you’re out there on your catamaran yip
And I think I found all that you lost.
Cheers Rob.It has been a big year and hsve pretty much concentrated on some beneficial results that has made my work easier in the heat and physical strength conditioning.Another 15kg would be great. You are welcome to them if you would like it.Rossco
I started watching your videos and have to say you have a great family. I can't wait to see the finished vessel and your wife's smiling face when you splash.
Thanks so much for watching my series Harold.Appreciate your kind words and yes hopefully there will be a happy Jan in the end.She is a very happy lady at the best of times regardless.
I had no idea you've got a connection to my part of the World - sunny England. We didn't get much of a summer this year unfortunately. I wouldn't assume both sides of the coach roof are symmetrical, usually not. Loved the video.
I have ascertained they are not exactly symmetrical but the back wall baseline is correct that is the important thing.Love the Uk like a second home to me.The traffic though does my head in.Cheers Ross
@@LifeOnTheHulls The traffic is bad in the UK. I learnt to sail on Coniston Water back in the 1960's the Lake District was always one of our favourite camping venue's. Enjoying your boat building skills Ross You've taken on a mammoth task for sure. Cheer's mate.
I’m your number 2 uk fan....lol.... Have you thought of putting in a set of bi-folding doors and really opening up the soon, like all the new cats? Good one again. 👍🏽
I'd be curious what you or others think of lighter foam core laminate schedules. The lightest I've found for a cruiser is the harryproa which uses vacuum infusion and epoxy:
Harryproa 65' lee hull, engineered laminate (incl FEA), 800 gsm infused glass either side of 30mm foam (spec was 25, but it is being built and sailed above the Arctic Circle so insulation was important) 100 sq m of hull, 5 kgs per sq m/1.02 lbs per sq'.
Harryproa C50. 600 gsm infused glass either side of 20mm foam 3.6 kgs/sq m /0.73 lbs per sq'.
I assume it won't be quite as impact resistant.
As always, thanks for all your videos!
I guess you have 2 #1 watch fan’s. I guess I can share that title with him. I’ll just be your #1 TEXAS fan!
Sorry Randy I really appreciate you sharing the honor.Cheers buddy.Ross
If it's anything like the laminates we use in a building restoration, they will likely cut it in smaller pieces. Four for the two directions, and the rest for impact tests (and the number there probably depending on blunt, sharp, shear, or abrasive ala Titanic). Our covered beams get tested much in the same way to allow us to certify the work.
Do you guys get like an aluminium tag that's required to be glassed in, or just a piece of paper?
Thanks
Cheers Kev.Ross
Ya I enjoyed that
i have just 1 question?what kind of resin with mixed hardener do you use in your spray gun for laminating???i have resin that have to be mixed with hardener about ratio 1 to 1000?due to longest hardening times
Can you build a “temporary” stationary boat-lift on the property? You already have a truck frame to move the hull. (And deck) It could raise a mast too! Almost like a travel-lift with no wheels. A child’s swing set?
Thought I was watching a Benny Hill show there for a minute with the time lapse bits. ;)
I should use the Benny Hill tune.Classic.Ross
That would make a nice 3d printer bed!
I sm sure it would Tim.Cheers buddy. Rossco
Very thick when you have a Griffin hiding in its hull. Lol
CAD to the rescue Ross ! Amazing what you can do with cardboard or other scrap mat'ls... watching the inside view of the salon, was wondering about the layup of the sections where the windows will be... do you glass all of it and cut them out later, or put in something to avoid waste as a temporary window placement like plywood or mdf etc ?
Window mullions will be solid glass and the actual windows will be rebated about 1cm with kirfed sheet and radiused and then a light layup to be then cut out. There will be a lot of prep work setting the window inserts but will be removed after demoulding.Cheers Ross
Hey Ross, if you weren’t building this to amsa survey standards do you think you would do anything different to the laminating schedule, as I’m building my 52ft double canoe I’m planning to follow your exact layup schedule but mine won’t be for survey so I can of course deviate from them a bit to if you had any thoughts that you would change, because im building it in quarters ive only just decided tonight that I MAY look at vacuum infusion to save resin and mess, would appreciate any thoughts on it mate. You can get a rough gauge of style and size on my channel.
Cheers for the vid mate I wait out all week for them 🤙🏻
Gidday Josh.I had the laminate schedule ratified by Oxeanuc Yachts in Qld so it is sound for our construction so as a monococque form it should suffice.Unsure of your bulkhead and bridging situation.Infusion a great option for weight savings and emmissions but will add significant cost and risk. What is your channel as I haven't seen it.Thanks for checking out my channel buddy.Ros
Life On The Hulls - Building a Cruising Catamaran hey Ross just click on my name and head over or search “The Vaka Meraki”, no bridge mate just 2 seperate hulls connected with a glorified front porch haha pretty much a giant Hobie cat haha, bulkheads will be tabbed in after the event like yours. Appreciate the reply Ross I’m completely new and making it up as I go along and it’s working out nicely so far haha
@@LifeOnTheHulls just click on his circle pic next to the comment Ross.
Ross, I hope I didn't miss something in your explanation about the destructive testing but you are showing 8mm of lamination, but isn't that just the outside layer? You then have the core foam and whatever the inside lamination is, so that sandwich cross section is considerably stronger yes? Do you not have core foam in the laminate of the hulls below the water line?
Amsa testing only require testing of the actual hull line in this case but this Cat is Foam core at the hull sides and 15cm each side of the ctr line.Amsa di not require test samples of core however, I will ending them a piece regardless.Cheers Ross
Do you use battery powered tools? I know I hate when I drag the cord around or it catches ect!
Anyways, as always good work and just watching you makes me tired! I hope you name the boat in a reflection of how monumental this job is., Ill give you a few suggestions "infinite" "Everest" "Hurculean" "insanity"
I love it.I have called it many things but I couldn't really repeat it in public.I have many cordless tools but seem to never have them on hand as I have a workshop at home where I prefer to keep the nice stuff.Cheers .Ross
Ross, just watched Six Point Wood Works, Ep 50 - Water Tanks (2nd half), might be interested?
Thanks Mike I will check it out now.Cheers buddy.Ross
Well, this is almost the video I have been hoping for in this series, the weights you mention don't seem to match the list. Wanted to see all the layers explained in order of lay up oh well ...
The weights are above the spec drawing.Instead of 1040 quad we chose to increase to 1215quad in both cases as firstly there was no availability of 1040 quad without overseasshipment from 3 companies and for safeties sake it was increased to improve impact protection.Although added a bit of weight it was agreed a substantial strength improvement ovwrall.Cheers Ross
@@LifeOnTheHulls still would like to see a lay up video with explanations thanks for reply
Knowing the weight would be interesting to help estimate the final weight of a smaller project.
Ross I am no longer showing on the "roll of honor" as a Patreon supporter. I have not withdrawn my support, so not sure if you are still getting my contribution.
Hey Stephen I will take a look, not sure why that has happened ,sorry buddy .
Famous last words, “all things being equal, it should be identical.” I hope you haven’t jinxed yourself with that pronouncement. You’ve been so meticulous, though, I’m confident that assumption won’t come back to haunt you.
Too funny.More worried about the rear wall baseline at this stage.Cheers Ross
I can't wait to go sailing I think you need a helper
I love it Kevin.Cheers buddy.Ross
Barrow in Furness, eh? Your next build will probably now turn out to be a submarine, mate!
Hah.Janet's late Dad worked on the guns for the ships and the Trident subs and our Nieces and Nephews now at Bae.Ross
None of which surprises me, Ross. Good job on that template, too, BTW.
Just watched this CF layup from hell on Mike Patey's channel...
That's a LOT of CF to lay up in one go!

Thanks Buddy.I love Mike's channel. That is a monumental effort.I love the the fairing and bleed technique. Thanks for sending this link to me .Chees Ross
Life on the Hills.....😆 I've been over that way before, no plans to return! Much prefer OZ! Enjoy and safe return.
It is a beautiful place but love the Aussie climate as well.Ross.
Nice now get back to work lol hahahahaha :)
Came to Sydney to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Looking at the beach right now!
Oh wow.Are you in Bondi or Manly.Going to be a hot stormy week for you.Congratulations on an incredible milestone.Janet and I are 27years.Cheers buddy.Ross
South of Bondi, Coogee. Who knew it would last this long. Not any of my mates, they thought I was nuts.
I was sure that your hulls would be something like 18mm thick, but 8mm? I hope thats enough
Matias. This thickness is sort of in the ballpark and a very tight laminate.Only really 40cm wide along the keel line then foam core and approx 30mm fir remainder.Given the layers of quad and biax I have increased the quad from 1040g to 1215quad so engineering is sound.Cheers buddy.Ross
@@LifeOnTheHulls nice to hear! Sorry for being so broke that i cant be a patreon 😪
Really need to work on your audio. 1 minute it's fine the next can't hear a word your saying. Love the channel watched every episode
Had some dutifully with audio this issue sorry buddy. Wind was also crazy.Cheers and thanks for watching.Ross
You lost quite a bit weight since the last time I've seen your video, the audio situation and your heavy Aussie accent is preventing me to watch your videos, well it's just me🙂, 👍
