Musicalperson 237 I was the only tenor sax then, I don’t know why I commented this. Now I’m a freshmen and I almost made symphonic band because the juniors and seniors have more experience than me.
I don’t know how this doesn’t have more views, but it certainly deserves it! I’m a brass player (trombone, baritone, trumpet,) and I’m learning the saxophone. This is really helpful!
@@Jonny-xj7hjYou have to have a personnal instructor to tell you which ones to push. You have main buttons and combination keys. The book will tell you the main keys but you won't know the combination keys without help from private lessons.
@@Jonny-xj7hj Great! I've been trying to decide on clarinet or sax and the combination keys are the most confusing thing to me. The pictures for fingerings is pretty tough to look at in a book. I will try to figure it out myself too but I imagine private lessons would be the quickest way to learn.
I love this. It is a good refresher for someone like myself who has been playing for over 30 years. It's always good to go back to the basics and get rid of bad habits. Great video, I am saving this as one of my favorites.
Some people might become impatient with this video BUT however slow paced and detailed it is he's a really solid teacher and there's nothing he says that isn't important or worthy of mention. GOOD LAD
I ENJOYED YOUR SAXOPHONE VIDEO MY DAD PLAYED TENOR SAX AND WORKED WITH BILLIE HOLIDAY AND PERRY COMO. HE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THOSE DAYS! IM GOING TO THE REST OF YOUR VIDEO
You are a real teacher. Thanks a lot for the lesson. I love how you break down everything, not assuming that whoever you are giving the information to is at your level (as some people on TH-cam assume) and zooming on and on.
Congratulations on completing your studies! I am rediscovering sax after 45 years. Getting ready to re-enter sax playing after all this time. Thank you for this video.
This is great! It's been decades since I played tenor sax on a high school issued instrument. I've missed it, because tenor sax makes such a soothing and yet uplifting sound. Now I'm planning to buy one and really needed a refresher course. As I recall, the tenor sax is easy to learn but takes years to master. If you're ever in an RV campground in the future and see an old lady playing a tenor sax sweet and low, that just might be me. 😉
Many years before youtube I had a tenor sax that I got as a gift from my husband. I ended up selling it because I didn't have time to go find lessons so I gave it up and sold it (sadly), it was being wasted unused and I had a friend that wanted it so I sold it to him. Now with youtube and watching you I am tempted to get another sax. I wanted to hear you play it!
Love, love, love the tenor saxophone. My son chose to play the tenor sax this year in school. What he didn’t know was that it had been my 1st choice when I was in high school a million years ago. Unfortunately I didn’t get to play it. I really had no 2nd choice so the teacher assigned me the clarinet. Was I disappointed I couldn’t play the sax!
Og Clarinet player learning tenor sax for concert band and it was such a shock to find out how much harder it is to control the air flow on tenor sax and not go into the higher octave when you don’t want to. Hopefully I can get it soon!
In third grade, I played my mom's clarinet..around 1964 (didn't get far). In junior college, I played tenor sax in a beginning instruments class (1 semester and didn't amount to much). Around 1995, I bought a CONN tenor and played around and it was disastrous fun; I also had an alto and tried playing both at once, even banging them on a keyboard while blowing (but maybe I was actually sucking..sold it so I could buy a motorcycle). Now I just got a CONN 10 M and I'm trying to make up for lost time! I just assembled the mouthpiece onto the neck, per your demonstration, and perfectly imitated the note and intonation from the video. First try. I have had about 10 get-familiar practice sessions and it seems to get a little better each time. Thanks for your dedication to this beautiful instrument, favored by Phil Nastico of Woody Herman fame; whose hand I shook at North Hollywood's PALOMINO CLUB in 1984. While he was taking a break!
Well...I am 74 and just got my first sax. have yet to play my first note. but want to get started right. Thanks for the the nice paced video. I plan on may first note being the D's. Then B,A.C. Excited to play songs and Jazz!

just got a sax to practice with over the summer to get ready for jazz band! I will say it's quite an adjustment from the clarinet but it's still fun nonetheless
Neck strap is the most important part. After 40 years the weight of my tenor was taking a toll on my neck. So i bought a cheap harness, it changed my world.
Thank you for the tips. It is interesting to note that as a self-taught saxophone player, I learned about what this gentleman's advice by trial and error. At lease I now know that I have done something right...Not sure about my musicality though. About how to handle the heavy piece of tenor sax, I have seen professionals who are supposed to know much about the fragility of the instrument, yet I noticed the careless way they manhandled their gear.
