Well first do a powder coating video for the jigs and then I would make blade baits which are fast and simple and frankly catch anything that swims. Edit: blade baits also can give your painting a test :D
Jann”s netcraft is a great source for hooks and other lure making supplies. Heating you lead molds just like with plastics making will help your lead pour and flow more smoothly.

I was wondering why i've seen some videos i've watched that the mold looked really burnt I didn't realize it was just carbon soot from the candle flame ,,,,,,, nice !! thanks for the HEADS UP,,,, been tossing around the idea of getting into jig making
Get some good gate cutters for cutting the sprues off the jig head. I gave up on the bottom pour melting pots opting for the ladle pour. Yours did seem to work well for those small jigs. Make some test pours without the hook to get the mold hot. Try SNL corporation for your hooks. They are in Jacksonville. They don't carry Gamakatsu though, just eagle claw and mustad. I get a lot of supplies from barlow's, they are good folks. Try to find a toaster oven for heating up your jigs. You can keep that in your garage. That will make the wife happy. Looking forward to see what you come up with painting the jigs. I spend way too much time painting the heads.

Smoke your molds aides in releasing the lead. On the smaller weights, hold mold at a slight angle under spout to get the lead into the back part of the hook area first helps. Also, some molds needs a faster pour rate. Heat the jig up for 20-20 seconds all around before dipping into the powder. On pouring jigs I am decent....what you do with plastics....LOL I never tried but want to one day. Pouring jigs is addictive too. If this is your first go round on lead....you did a fine job for sure.
Have you heard of using a candle to blacken the jig mold? I always had trouble with them not filling in until I started doing it. Just light a candle and hold the mold over it until the parts that the lead touches turn black! You have to do it every now and then but it works for me!

Funny you should start casting with molten lead. I'm a long time bullet caster. I just recently modeled and 3D printed my own molds for adding lead weight to my soft plastic fishing bait hooks. Perfect timing. I made my first cast with these 3D printed molds this morning.. Success! Preheating your molds helps with fill out. Heating the lead to about 700 to 750 degrees F will also facilitate good fill out and definition. With each successive cast your mold will start to heat up all by itself. Too hot and you get a sort of frosty finish of the surfaces of your cast lead. It still works though, in spite of the frosty surface finish.

Couple tips: Preheat the mold by setting it on top of the led pot for 5-10 minutes. Crank your heat up on the pot. And lastly, light a candle and hold the mold over the flame. The soot in the cavity will help the lead completely fill in. Another thing I like doing is I twist the runner off and use a file to clean up the jig and I put a small piece of heat shrink on the hook eye before heating and painting.
Sweet jig and pig learn something new every time this is how I got started making baits with jigs now I am doing plastic I wish that Echo crawl came in hand pored mold lol keep the content coming
I pour the same mold and love it. I use some clear nail polish to set my eye instead of super glue it seems to come out cleaner then a couple coats of epoxy helps the durability of the paint and eyes.
@@WorldsWorstFishing Try spraying the inside of your mold with "Drop Out" mold release spray. I get mine from Amazon. Works Great! Use the lightest possible coat that covers the cavities. Lasts longer than candle smoke in my opinion.
Try the Teflon Base Hole Pins, I find them much easier to work with than the metal ones. Lead doesn't stick to them, paint doesn't stick to them and you can adjust the depth to eliminate the weed guard hole entirely if you desire.
Set your mold on top of you pot for 10 minutes or so before pouring. It pre heats the mold and makes for a better pour. Never hold the mold from the bottom while pouring. Use the handles. Your gloves will not stop molten lead from burning you. If you want tips watch some bullet mold videos. Keep up the great content.

Great job! Two comments for ya, use pliers to pull the weed guard pin, those hooks hurt. And nylon inserts for painting then you won't have to keep cleaning your pins for the next round of jigs. Keep rocking it brother 👊

You need to preheat the mold and also smoke it. Some use a candle but old timers like me use a carbide lamp. It produces Acetylene gas and makes the new castings come out of the mold easier. Great job.
What id really like to see is soft plastics that have the weighted head/hook inside the plastic. One of my favorite baits is these cheap things you can get at Walmart. Swimbait style plastic with a lead head and hook in the Plastic already. I have an inkling of how to do this myself but i don't have the right molds for any of it and I'm really curious how a big company makes those types of baits.
Man you will have a blast making your own jig skirts! Almost every skirted bait I throw in all my tournaments is a handmade skirt. Love that mold for bladed jigs and the poison tail for swim jigs....also get yourself some Teflon pins for when you powdercoat and want to keep the weedguard hole clean
If you look at the molds that have a weed guard, look into the item description. A lot of the websites will have the different components listed that are needed to finish off the jig from the inserts to the hooks

Also look a 2 oz fluidizing bed on eBay and use it to get a better powder coating job. Less worrying about a chunky looking finish. Also go on barlows and order a ton of their teflon weed guard insert they are a lot nicer to use to powder coat with
Need to turn your heat up on the lead 375° and use a clamp to make a better seal. And make sure you clean your mold after every pore I use vegetable oil to lube my hinges and cavities. Awesome job on your first time.
In case others haven't commented already, it would be prudent to warn folks of the toxicity of lead, and inform about proper care and handling, especially in households with kids. You had done something similar with plastics, but proper lead handling is far more critical.
As soon as I saw those hooks I was like Aww man, swim jigs have a vertical line tie so you can bring it through the grass without getting grass hung up on your swim jig.. Those hooks would be great for Football Jigs!
I also use the Lee DripOmatic lead pots I have 2 10 lb pot and 2 20 lb pots I cast both Jigs & sinkers and cast bullets FYI Clean the lead pot out Also clean the valve , the pin will get crud on and around it Causing pouring problems

Set you mold on top of your melting pot while it heats. I usually set mine between 7 and 8. Definitely need to preheat the mold.

Great video! The sideways hook eye is great for adding a blade for some vibration. Just need a split ring between them.

I need to get more lead molds. Used to make my own shot for trap shooting. Have all the smelting pots and tools needed.

Have you ever had issues with the pot dripping? I used mine for the very first time and it would not stop dripping until it cooled

Love making jigs! I just order some molds and hooks. I use 8 for a heat setting and smoke the mold with a candle to help it come out of the mold.

I agree with this 100% except for the lead part. They are a necessity for painting though..but we all do things differently

Lots of tricks to make the mold fill well. How well a mold fills is very mold specific. Soot the mold, heat the mold, powder the mold, vent the mold.
