Saw The Damned lastning in Sydney . I don't know how to describe it... I've been a fan for years and loved Rats drumming only seen him on promo clips ect .but i was blown away! seing him live finally after 30 odd years .
I.met.Rat.and Captain in 1978 at.erics.Club.in.Liverpool.when I was.14 and. I hate.to.disappoint any punk.fans but they were.really friendly guys!.we.had a laugh and a beer with em,God.Bless.Ya.Rat!!!
Great interview. Despite the Magic FM jukebox. I smiled at Rat’s Lee Brilleaux experience and introduction to the real Blues. Good to hear Roman Jugg getting a mention and credit for the MCA era albums.
Second time I've watched this and enjoyed it even more the second time. Inbetween the two watches, I've seen footage of the early years Damned, maybe in San Francisco '79, a great raw energy old school punk gig but with the bonus of Rat and Captain even swapping instruments. Rat on guitar, Mr. Sensible on drums. So this time I appreciated Rat talking about playing chords/guitar because he can. Talented guy. Great interview this.
It was the Portobello Gold the Hells Angels local that Lemmy used to play the fruit machine all day, the Lonsdale was opposite the Gold. I got kicked out of the Lonsdale (my local) on my 18th birthday because I had just freshly died my hair and the landlord was worried he was going to get raided but they let me back in the next night. I had only been a local for about two years!
The Clarendon was one of my locals That and the greyhound ,I've met and had a pint with Lemmy in the Clarendon , lovely geezer , asked rat to get us in at the greyhound he said no I can't piss off 🤣later on in life I worked for a bloke in Brentford who was rats neighbor ,And he put me and him on the guest list at the Astoria I think ,I never did mention it to rat ,nice bloke 👍
How have you not got more subscribers mate! Love listening to my punk heros talk about life and just see what they are like, have subscribed and will be watching more of your videos! I'm a young punk just trying to get my fill of any punk related things so this interview was a great find 😀
Enjoyed every second of that. Wanted to pour myself a glass of red to feel like I was there too. Funny after everything Rat said about sensible and the Damned, he’s now doing a reunion tour with them in 2021. Tickets bought, but I’ll be amazed if it happens.
Yea I've got mine for 2 of those gigs,, they just reckoned that they didn't wanna be standing around 1 of their graves saying we should have done this and that, so they all kissed and made up... Hopefully rat stays on as the drum stool is vacant as pinch left, who by the way did a great job for 20 years but there's only 1 guy for me who should be on that stool
Fabulously clear guide around the music scene of the time...Its lovely to hear a man from that era that still has a mind..!!(sez a lot 4 my frendz) honestly...It worries me..Whats going to become of mumbling old drug addled guys...? Wish I could secure a territory 4 them...xx
Met Rat back in the Ipswich dome back in 1992,a genuine bloke. The damned were among three bands that were cursed of the “Brian’s”.Were the damned the same when Brian James left?,as the lads said earlier was the Rolling Stones the same when Brian Jones left and also you could say were the Cramps the same when Brian Gregory left??.
Good point. But the Damned, when Brian James, became a different but definitely not a lesser band. And despite the aura around Brian Jones, he was becoming marginal to the Stones music way before he died.

I've not watched it all yet, but I'm enjoying this. It's like a chat rather rather than an interview, and all the more interesting for it. I came because I was looking for a connection between Rat Scabies and an all-female Japanese punkish band called The Let's Go's (th-cam.com/video/o7boTXBbGpQ/w-d-xo.html) and the card outer spine on one of their CDs makes some reference to "Rat Scabies (drum) The Damned", and the google search brought this video up. The only musician I've actually spoken to was Kenney Jones of The Small Faces and The Who, but he was incredibly drunk when I met him, and was quite miffed that I couldn't guess who he was. Oddly I also once ended up stood next to him on the bus going to the car park at Gatwick Airport a few years later, but this time he was sober, and didn't ask me to guess his identity - which is a shame because that time I'd have known. edit: it turns out The Mutants did an album with various J-Punk bands guesting on the tracks, and The Let's Go's were one of those.
Brilliant interview so nice to hear someone say how shit it is about tribute bands & bloke doing interview doesn't understand when he said fake lemmy was putting warts on if you listened to Rat who i agree with 100% about so called tribute bands Motorheadache should of been on first not headlining over bands that take time to write own stuff, rehearse etc sad, i think its same as all these 80's punk bands that had a name & reform for FARCE fest(rebellion) get put up on main stage they never got that big originally they should earn their place again bands in scene Now are ones that should be on main stage /higher than reformed bands.
Rat actually looks like a rat now. ... Still.... the best drummer & am glad he's back & made up with capt. Met him only once in the 80's & he wasnt the friendliest tbh whereas capt ive met a few times & has always been a laugh, vanian is a tiny bloke & came across as rather shy.
If I'm correct and I wouldn't want to be quoted on it but a fall-out between rat and dave over the I'm alright jack and the beanstalk album started it all
I went to see one of the Scabies & James gigs in the same week as the Damned played and to me and my mate who came with me to both gigs, it was clear to us both that Scabies & James blew the Damned away, they played with intensity and power that Sensible and Vanian could hope to match. And I love the Damned and go to see them as often as possible, I've been going to see them live for more than 40 years (it feels mad reading how long I've been going to see them). THANK YOU TO THE DAMNED, INCLUDING EVERYONE WHO HAS EVER BEEN A MEMBER OF THE BAND EVEN IF IT WAS ONLY FOR ONE RECORD OR GIG.
