I lived in Brighton in 2001 for a few years, and kept seeing Captain in a pub and on the street, but never had the nerve to talk to him. One night out with my mate, we were both drunk, and Captain came walking past. This time we chatted with him, and he was so friendly, and he was having fun talking with 2 random fans on the street. I kept on bumping into him after that, and we got on first name terms. In conversation, I called him Captain, but he said 'call me Ray'. He's got a light hearted fun energy about him. He's a good guy. I originally bumped into him in 1995, at an Animal Rights party in Shoreham, where his band The Space Toad Experience, was playing to raise money for the legal defence of the protesters who were being arrested every day at the demo, Ban Live Exports, from Shoreham Harbour. Reckon Captain would be a blast to go out for a drink with! 😊
to answer Dave's and Captain question, my guess is strawberries. I just caught the Damned in Boston Aug 29.2022. Great show . Captain I missed Ya, Honor to see you Dave, you are both are Legends to me. I will catch another show when you come back to New England....Thank you for your music ..!!!. Dave and Captain your fashion is also Great.

@@beltanetrex It was ... T. REX were doing the "Dandy in the underworld" album tour with the Damned as support... The gig was at Manchester Apollo... It was all old style cinema type seating. The first few rows of seats collapsed and broke up as the as the audience stormed towards the stage when Bolan appeared... It was in May 1977.. He died in the car crash in September 1977...We saw Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies outside at the back of the apollo a while before the concert...
A friend of mine, a carpet fitter, fitted a carpet for Dave Vanian. Somewhere in Hornsey, I remember he said there were skulls and coffins in his house. I wonder if it's the same carpet they talk about :D
Candy Dormizzi so Damned Damned Damned unpunk gothic shit.Long live the Pistols. But the Captain's still the geetar hero through and through. Take from that what you will
Come back to Phoenix! Loved, loved,LOVED seeing both of you! You are getting BETTER with age💕💕💕 BTW, you two are absolutely delightful in interviews and would be great with your own show! Just saying.....🙋💋
I was just about to write Strawberries when I saw that you beat me to it, I didn't know it was a toilet before this interview though, I just knew it had a subtle noise between tracks.
That's the album Strawberries? I thought so because there is a strange cool sound between the songs towards the end of the record. Never would have known it was a toilet.
The story I heard was that they were playing (at the very beginning of the band, they still hadn't found any monikers, which were necessary anyway because they were all signing on, perceiving Unemployment Benefit, and if they had used their real names they would have been fined and had the benefits cut off), and on a tour bus with other bands. Ray Burns was wearing a jacket with epaulettes and he was messing around going "Ladies and gentlemen, this bus works perfectly and it is all under control. We are all going to crash in two minutes" and so on, and someone from another band shouted "look, it's fucking Captain Sensible", and the nickname stuck....
and Yes !! Looking forward to the New Album , hugely ... So, Who's Paranoid ? was & is a killer , especially with the 3 bonus tracks Time , Aim To Please , Half Forgotten Memories ( on the vinyl but not the original cd release - it is now on the 2nd issue ) 10/10
Punk wasn't violent, I went to loads of gigs between 1977 and 1985 and never saw violence. People were boisterous but not violent. The media talked shite
I've heard the pentagram story before. I'd love to go on a drinking binge with The Captain. I was a punk rock guitarist too. And I too got beat up for saying I loved punk rock.

40 years of spreading joy & happiness. That's Phil Collins.
We spread misery.
Captain is a genius.
The cap is crack up 😂😂😂 very underrated as a guitarist
What's wrong with Phil Collins
Dave is truly a vampire. he's the coolest dude ever
The Black Album 1980. The Damned.
One superb, epic album ladies and gents.
Side 3 is the best - Curtain Call, a 17 minute masterpiece
'Strawberries' was a great follow-up, 'Under the Floor Again's one of the best things they ever did!
Brilliant album. Showed that they had musical chops. Saw them live that year and they were dreadful.

I can imagine the sound producer for this interview pulling his hair out every time Dave pulls his coat over his lav mic.

LOVE T.Rex! Must have been an amazing show, especially as Bolan's last tour.

NEW! NEW! NEW! stuff... we can't wait for more new songs... please. - J.YO '
Two class acts and set the tone other bands would follow. Glad they are out touring and making some new material.
They're so humble. Fuck.
I have used Daves mic a few times i can see the love he has for it .... suits punk 77 just fine
Great that they still want to do new material.
johndevault The new albums wicked :)
Proper blokes & band!
Great interview !
Completely agree with the Captain...The 70s recordings were by far the best sounding...
part 2 ...can't wait....
Loved you then....love you still 💜💜💜

What a good smelling record it still is.
That's the album Strawberries? I thought so because there is a strange cool sound between the songs towards the end of the record. Never would have known it was a toilet.
The 70's really was the most exciting era ever! And The Damned played their part of that era!
Hans Zimmer brought me here.
BTW. Why he's called Captain Sensible @4:45
I saw an interview where he said that he got that nickname from being a bit reckless when he would get drunk.... Kinda like calling a fat guy "Tiny".
Still brilliant live, top pros.

Strawberries for the toilet sound XD
The best fucking band. Ever.
Come to New Zealand and go to Auckland city
History of the world part 1 is a brilliant commercial song. After almost 40 years of waiting, when will the Damned release part 2?
Down to earth lads. Great to see, not like the woke bs the music industry spews out these days 🤜🤛
Punk wasn't violent, I went to loads of gigs between 1977 and 1985 and never saw violence. People were boisterous but not violent. The media talked shite
That is very true .
sometimes dickhead skinheads came round
Really??? So you think when bands get beer glasses thrown at them whilst playing and being spat upon is boisterous behaviour??😂😂😂
❤❤❤❤
I'm gonna tape the throne!!! LALALALALALA WOOOOOOO
I maybe wrong but I believe that The Damned "curse" may have something to do with the name of this band. Captain and Dave beware!
I've heard the pentagram story before. I'd love to go on a drinking binge with The Captain. I was a punk rock guitarist too. And I too got beat up for saying I loved punk rock.

Toaday's music sounds like it is produced on the same pre-set every time, the real organic musicians dont seem to get a look in these days

Hipster (ugly) with happy belly interviewing pioneers. What a contrast. Doesn´t get Captain´s joke at 0:25.
Yeah shame on him for his enthusiasm and getting on great with his interviewees
