Thanks for this! I'm from a Polish family and cabbage rolls were a big part of our family meals. Now that I'm widowed I'm always looking for recipes that are easy to make and make enough that I can have several meals because I really don't cook much any more.
Me too, I've been making cabbage roll soup for ages!!!! We like more tomato flavor so I use spaghetti sauce and tomato juice. You can even can a jar or two, all you need is a jar and lid, seal it up and keep it for months!!! I don't know about freezing some, but I might try the next time I make it. My family is German, Irish and Dutch we like several "crossover" recipes.
Hi u can also press down lines up and down and across to make little hamburger patties out of them.throw them in u frying pan even while frozen and make little sliders for ur kiddos.it cooks up fast too.
I tried your recipe and did it exactly like you showed on your video.....only one difference.....I did it in an Instant Pot. It worked fantastic, as, I sauteed the onions and hamburger I dumped in all the ingredients into the pot and pressure cooked it for 20 minutes, let it naturally de-compress for 10 minutes and it turned out absolutely fantastic....added the cheese and it was delicious. I left the pot on warm setting and the rest is history. I loved cabbage rolls as a kid, but, they are work intensive, but this was a cinch. Also, in the instant pot, no heat in the kitchen, as when I made this, it was 105˚ outside in Boise, Idaho...thanks for the recipe...it's become a favorite.
I make this all the time only difference is I add bacon to the bottom of pot and cook in oven. I’m going to try it next time on top of stove Cooks for over an hour in oven
Someone taught me to layer the chopped cabbage, onions, bell peppers, and browned hamburger in a baking dish/pan; pour tomato soup and one soup can of water over the above and season as you like: top with shredded cheese, cover and bake in oven. Love this stuff!
Mom always made fried cabbage, fry a lb of bacon then add chopped cabbage to the Greese , add a couple of tbls of sugar (to taste) when the cabbage is tender crumble the bacon and toss yummy!
When I was growing up, my mother always used Campbell's Tomato Soup with her cabbage rolls. I thought everyone did, and was so shocked when I visited a friend and her family made a different, scratch sauce. But though it was good, for comfort food I still prefer my Campbell's. This looks great and I think I hear it calling my name. Must make some soon.
I was looking for this perfect recipe. A head of cabbage is now almost $ 3.00 I live alone. I don’t need that much. So I saved money by buying shredded cabbage to get the same taste. Cabbage is cabbage. I’ll sure try your recipe.
Went to visit a gf of mine and she had that tool. I had never seen one. Got home and grabbed one for my kitchen. I love that thing. I use it for everything it is such a great idea in a simple tool.
Just got back from store and put beef in the pot. Hope my husband will eat it. Don't have any bell peppers. Forgot them. Husband said.." it's ok..if ya like that kinda stuff" neighbor smelled it cooking..he's from N.Carolina...he said I love cabbage soup. I.gave him a big bowl...he came back for more. I think it was a success!! I loved it. Wish i had a freezer. I still have a large pot full left.
@CatherinesPlates having left overs tonight...kicked it up a notch. Added corn..black beans and served with cheese and sour cream. If there's any left its going into a beef burrito tomorrow but I don't think there will be any left
Believe it or not, I love eating the raw cabbage, while I’m chopping it up. Up here in the north, Boil dinner is very popular. Pork shoulder or Corn Beef, potatoes, onion, rutabaga or turnip, carrots and cabbage. All boiled together. Cabbage goes in a bit later, so it isn’t mush.
just got done making this and it is good!!! I added some tony chaceres and some slap ya' mama and it paired with the flavors nicely. very hearty meal cold rainy day stuff. it's a keeper. very easy to make also
I love cabbage rolls! I made them once. A whole lot more time than I ever wanted to spend making them. Glad you gave us an alternative. Thanks for the choice.
Hi Catherine. When you said you love one pot skillet meals I smiled because anyone who knows if you love to cook as we do, you also enjoy NOT doing dishes all the time. We still end up with a home delicious home-cooked meal for our family and not to mention the money that we saved by cooking cooking at home. Make a one pot meal and serve it along with a dinner roll, or side salad, or sliced tomatoes or a bowl of cucumbers or even some homemade peaches in syrup. Anything works and very little dishes to wash. Thanks for another good video
I used 11/2 lbs he chicken and 11/2 lb mild sausage and it really turned out very good. Tanks Ms Catherine for so many wonderful recipes and the variety of foods seem endless!! You are a TH-cam icon.
Oh my goodness!! You have some of the best recipes and this is definitely one of my favorites. Thank you so much for sharing with us, I have already made several of your dessert recipes and my husband loves them. I just love watching you cook you make it so easy and the preparation is very quick.
I’ve been doing this for decades! Often just bake it all like a casserole. Making actual rolls just too much time and mess and I have never been able to figure out how my aunties got the cabbage so soft, no knife needed for their rolls! And yes, definitely campbells tomato soup!
Parboil the whole head of cabbage until it gets soft but not completely cooked. Remove from pan, cool then peel off each individual leave as needed. This is if you're making the rolls.
My favorite cabbage dish is fried cabbage and noodles. Pure nostalgic comfort food for me! But this looks really yummy too, and much easier than actual rolls.
Hello Catherine, I make a Cabbage dish once a week. I make something like this with a Hungarian twist. I make a Buttered Cabbage dish in my Instant-Pot. I make a Cabbage Soup and also I make Cabbage, Polish Sausage, Potatoes & Onions in my Instant-Pot. Love, Love, Love Cabbage! So Yummy for the Tummy!
Hello Katherine I am going to try this dish today June 19th 2021 I also noticed that lamp you have by your stove I Like It where did you get that lamp from watching all your channels
Just wanted to tell you ma'am that I tried this tonight and it was absolutely delicious. Ive got a garden but way to many vegetables "cabbage" to handle. This was a quick and easy recipe. A side of mash potatoes and buttered bread made it all the better. I'll be adding this to the cook book 👍
Thanks for the recipe!! i added a few spices like cumin, paprika, and cayenne and i will br making this for the rest of my life now!! SO EASE, healthy, good

Making cabbage rolls can be work intensive. The recipe had called for half ground beef and half ground pork. I used half ground bison and half ground pork. It turned out awesome. I am going to try the half ground bison and half ground pork with your recipe as well. I love the idea you get all the flavors of cabbage rolls without all the work.
I made a similar one for dinner tonight but cooked my cabbage and onions first. I used tomato soup but added some V8 juice. It turned out so delicious. I did add a bit of bacon grease in the meat, oh and btw, I used a pound of pork and a pound of beef.
Hi Catherine! I'm in Plano up north of you near DFW. When I was a young bride, I found a recipe for cabbage rolls in a church cookbook. They were made with cream of mushroom soup: 2 cans - 1/2 can goes into the meat and rice mixture and the other 1-1/2 with chicken broth goes over the rolls and into the oven. No tomatoes and acidity for hubby. I actually like them this way much better and have gone back to the tomato way. I love all of your recipes - they are wonderful. I can almost smell them on my computer. LOL
Catherine, I am a new subscriber, so I am playing "catch up" with your recipes from two years ago. This cabbage casserole looks awesome. Just like you said, perfect comfort food. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hi Catherine, they sell the same meat chopper at WalMart for around 5 dollars. I bought mine in store about three years ago. I really enjoy your recipes. Keep up the good work.
Looks wonderful! When I fry cabbage I use half oil and half bacon grease. Then just before its done I add maybe a tsp of sugar. According to how much you like! Also cuts the bacon taste if you get heavy handed with it. I use whatever fresh veggies are on hand!
Paullette Barrow~~I make the same soup but I use country style ribs with bone and I also use garlic and bay leaves with some Italian seasoning~~The flavor using ribs is just so awesome~~I also use ribs for my spaghetti sauce~~A must try~~Catherine, you are the best~~Love u and love your family~~God Bless all ya'll~~
Hi Catherine, I made this casserole for the first time today and it was sooooo good. Also, I made the crockpot pork chops with the apples 2 weeks ago and it turned out really good. I found this video earlier in the week and I got the items to make it. Made it this evening and wow! It is awesome! Thanks for this, so yummy. I love it.
Cat, you can reduce the amt of acid in the cnd tomatoes by draining the canned tomatoes and adding cream or evaporated milk to the pot. The milk will offset the acid. Also mozzarella or cream cheese for the cheddar. I make a cabbage dinner with kielbasa sausage and thick sliced bacon with the onions. Once the sausage and bacon and chpd onions are cooked add your cut up cabbage. Add 2 cups of veg or beef or chicken stock. Season to taste and let simmer until cabbage begins to soften. Don't drain anything until the cabbage is done.
Catherine I just made your recipe for the stovetop cabbage roll casserole it is awesome thank you I have made a lot of your recipes and all are so delicious
I'm on keto. I'd use riced cauliflower and add it at the end ,before the cheese. Due to high cholesterol I'd also change the beef to veggie ground beef and add it with the cauliflower. Tomato paste for me. At 71 I don't lose on keto, but I don't gain either. I'll try for smaller amounts as I live alone and wouldn't want to eat this every day for a week. But, looks good to me.
I think your knife needs sharpening. I made this and added a little Worcestershire sauce for umami and a pinch of sugar to balance the acidity. So good!! I love your recipes!
Oh it was so good! In Poland, cabbage rolls are called Glumpkie, and instead of cheddar cheese, they put sour cream on top after on your plate. My husband was Polish and that's how he always how they did it. Thank you for sharing this recipe.🤗
I'm mentally slow thank you for helping me and thank you for being my teacher thank you for showing me have a good day
The thing about rolling out the ground beef is that it will defrost so much faster than a big ball of beef. Genius!
Agreed!! Such a simple little trick and I never even thought about it! I dig Catherine! I’m learning a lot!!
And it'll save space in the freezer!
@@TimFM Win win!
I’ve been doing this too.. why haven’t I thought of this years ago?
Great idea
