    This 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS might not be the hottest cars we've featured on Muscle Car Of The Week, but it is one of the coolest! Wearing the enticing Evening Orchid color and featuring a stunning white bucket seat interior, this 4-speed drop-top stops traffic wherever it goes. From The Brothers Collection.

    I have a 1965 Malibu SS 4 speed 283. Was going swap the engine for a 327 in 1992. Mechanic wouldn't do it. Car was all original numbers matching. His advise was to not change engine but add some performance goodies. Followed his advice he rebuilt engine changed crankshaft and added aftermarket cam and reworked heads and other goodies. Mechanic worked for Hendricks racing team. Car is quick and has a wicked lope at idle. It is a one owner car. Had it since May of 1965; Boy that was a very good year!

    The 283's of that era came with Power Pack heads that woke up the engine pretty nicely....of course not a 327 but a worthy engine in it's own right and would spin right up with a 4-bbl. Some people may not care of the 'hub caps' but they were thick aluminum and nicely polished and just looked right on the car. Evening Orchid? Very nice.

      Oops....wrong hub caps; I was thinking of Z16....but nice anyway. Not the belly-button Cragers.

    I recently inherited this exact car from my dad. Its road worthy but in need of restoration. I've been trying to figure out what to do with choosing a paint Color. For the most part im a purist when it comes to classic cars but I think in this case I'm going to go with Evening Orchid! Thanks for the idea! Love your show, keep up the good work!

    Good looking car. The 283 was a great performer and put into a light weight car with a 4 speed. I'm in.

    I love that color! It's not black or red, it's unique and looks very clean. I'd have to change those heads, intake manifold, carb., and camshaft and put a little more oompaa into that sweet machine. Killer wheels and tires and this baby would be all anyone needs.

    I had one, but with black interior and black top, 327ci/ 350 HP. I regret that I didn't keep it.

    Had the '65 with 350hp 327. It featured Holly 4-barrel atop a high rise manifold, 4 speed Muncie and convertible top on BRG paint and black interior. It was the definition of sleeper and could handle most mopars. It came that way new off the lot at Reedman in Langhorne, Pa. Sadly a letter from the president ended my run and while it went to a new owner, I went to Vietnam.

    Evening Orchid was a beautiful color that was only available for the first half of the '65 model year due to problems with fading if parked outdoors . It just wasn't colorfast. Also this color while available on Impalas , Chevelles , and Novas could only be had on the Super Sport versions .

      Both engines came with the crossed flags , the 327 had the engine size badges also , while the 283s did not .

    When you remove the roof, I think this generation Malibu looses a bit of its cool character. Though it is a beautiful restoration. Thanks.

    Cool car however I have bad memories about the 283. In the fall of 1963 my parents came home with a brand new 1964 impala SS. It was so different from any cars are family had previously. The shine soon wore off as the neighborhood boys soon informed me that the motor to have was the 327 with the 4bl. One of my friends parents had a plain Jane four door biscayne but it had a 327. I couldn't stand that wimpy 283. This story does end on a positive note. In 1968 I started talking to my dad about the new Plymouth GTX. He wasn't going for that but I did talk him into buying Plymouth Sports Satellite, 383 4 bl, yellow, black vinyl roof , set off with the factory chrome wheels with red line tires. Boy did I think I was hot stuff driving that car. When you got your foot into it and the 4bl opened up it made an amazing noise because of the type of air cleaner on the 383. I remember riding across the Ross Island bridge in Portland Oregon on a sunny day with the windows rolled down and Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf blaring from the radio.

    Cool looking car. I like the interior and the 4 speed. The power is a little low to be a true muscle car. I would call it a car with muscle, but it would need a 327 or larger to be a muscle car.

    • @customkey

      Engine is still cold. When warmed up, coil spring flap on manifold opens up, then you have duals. My dad's new '66 GTO had the same feature, we took the resonators off, it had a nice burble when it warmed up.

    I like the color but with the white top and hubcaps it looks like a chick car.

    Definitely NOT "Muscle Car Of The Week!"

  • @stripervince1
    @stripervince1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    hardly a "muscle" car. convertible alone kills that status , no hood scoop or bulge as a lowly 283. lamest of all the mcotw so far. sorry kevin, this one is la pew

    • @timhammett2302
      @timhammett2302 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, it's not a muscle car, but it does belong in a muscle car collection. R2 and R3 Super Larks weren't considered muscle cars either, but with short gears they would leave most anything else, in the dust, as they say.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "Lame"??? You go try to find one of these in this condition & see what it'll cost ya. Throw a set of "Power-Pact" heads on it, and some minor tune & tweaking, and just watch this little 283 flat out spank any stock base 350. They could be hot-rodded even more than that. Seen several over the years that shamed a lot of guys in a race. The only "la pew" around here, is "your opinion"........and it stinks worse than your a**hole.

      Howabouthetruth saw 3 of them a few hours ago at a big car show in florida. not impressed. just on old car in good shape. my stang would embarrass this thing. sounds like a cabin cruiser boat, single exhaust. Def not a muscle car

    • @stripervince1
      @stripervince1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Strzelecki yeah. it's still a nice old car from that era. just really not a "muscle" beast

    • @stripervince1
      @stripervince1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no you are right. still a beautiful 50 year old car, just not really a "muscle" car.
