    I never cared much for the Chevelles and Malibus and Novas until the 66' models came out when the shapes started to be more contoured instead of boxy. In 65' I was still liking the 57 Chevys and the full sized Impalas. My uncle had a 57, then got a 63 Impala. I wasn't old enough to drive and still in grade school but was a car nut and was always excited to see the new models that came out each year. I would like to see Chevy bring back a cool looking Chevelle like they brought back the Camaro. Currently have a 17' SS 6 spd Camaro that lives up to the legendary nameplate.

    I seem to recall some of the early 396 engines in these were rated for 425 HP. I can’t find anything in a quick search but I’m fairly sure my recollection is correct.

    Great points, but we're only telling the story of this car today, not trying to claim it was the fastest Muscle Car. All the big 3 had speedy cars in the early '60s... 406 3 deuce Galaxies, 409 Ipalas, etc., but this vid is about the Z16 in particular. However, we appreciate the feedback and that you've been follong us for a long time, that means a lot to us. Thanks for your comments, and thanks for taking the time to watch our videos. Cheers pal!

    I had 65 4dr, 6 cyl, 3 on the tree.... It was silver with red interior. I bought it from a little old lady...!
    The paint was pretty faded, so it looked gray instead of silver, but the body was straight and it had no rust.
    It was a good running, basic car...nothing fancy....but really dependable.....
    Then, someone ran into me and put a big dent in the passenger side door...
    After that happened, my straight, good running, but nothing fancy car looked like an old beater...! :)

    love your show kevin, ..If they ever do a movie on the life of Dan Blocker, you could play that lead role....
    I had a chance in 1992 to buy a convertible '65 malibu, it didnt have a big block...The guy owned a junkyard and had repo'd the car off some lady that owed him money...I offered him $250 bucks and he said "ok"....He then told me that i could never request a title..looking back i probably could have done something to get a "salvage" title.. At the time i backed off,,didnt sound so great without a title.

    those are hubcaps, they are same ones on dodge dart and mustang, only center is changed, each cap is heavy at 7 1/2 lbs each! Crager mags based their rims on these caps, that came in 2 styles, slotted and non slotted.

    Pontiac didnt start the muscle car they just had the best marketing brand. Dodge and Plymouth where making mid sized 2 door cars with 413-426 Max Wedge engines with 4 speeds and stripped interiors to anyone starting in 61-62. And they would beat the tail off any Pontiac GTO trust me about that.

    • @myassizitchy
      @myassizitchy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Boredout454 just saw this argument in anither video. Ur rite about the 300 and all thaf but those was full size cars and the definition of muscle.car is a midsize body with the biggest engine which is exactly what john delorean did with.the gto. Himself. Shoved a big motor in his.midsized tempest ...ergo-muscle car
      .anyway thats what these guys was arguing a min ago. Dont remember which video but it made sense to me.

    • @jeremythompson9895

      I'm a Mopar guy but the reason Pontiac gets credit for starting the muscle car era is because the 1962-63 413/426 Max Wedge Mopars we're factory race cars and weren't really meant to be driven on the street, although they were street legal. Chevy had the 409 cars, Pontiac the 421SD Catalina, and Ford the 406 and 427 Galaxies but they were all full size cars

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A 413/426 Max Wedge Mopar would eat a GTO for breakfast at the Drag Strip. But the Max Wedge Mopars were a factory race car...rather than a street going muscle car like the GTO. But Mopar did build the first muscle car anyways...the 300 horsepower 1955 Chrysler 300. Some people say the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 was the original muscle car. But 180 horsepower isn't really muscle car type numbers in my book...although 180hp was a lot for 1949. But you could go all the way back to the first Ford flathead V8 cars in 1932 in that case, because the Ford V8 was the fastest car on the road at that time...beside a Duesenberg or other high end cars like it.

      They couldn't beat the '63 Tempest 421, crossram dual quad with 3.90 gear transaxle with starter and battery at the back of the car. Weight displacement was 50/50 and the cars ran in the mid 10's in the quarter mile.

    I often wonder, "Why doesn't GM just remake some of their best cars of the past, just with updated suspensions and electronics?" There really isn't anything being made these days that have the combination of style, charisma, practicality and power that the 60's muscle cars have. Nothing at all (except maybe Jeeps and Mustangs.)

    Let me correct one piece of information from the video narration. While it is true that standard equipment for the '65 Z16 was a Delco AMFM Multiplex four-speaker sound system, none of the 200 cars was equipped with an 8-Track tape player.

    This is what confuses so many people now adays. The Malibu is an option package of a Chevelle so all Malibu's are Chevelles but not all Chevelles are Malibu's (kinda like the SS). Malibu didnt become its own car until 73-74? So if you See a 69 Chevelle and it says Malibu on the side, its not a Malibu, its a Chevelle it just has a Malibu package.

      I have a set of those caps but they are 15". I believe the Chevelle's were 14"? A swap meet guy said the 15" versions are pretty rare. Mine were on a '73 Caprice Classic 2 door with a 454 that I owned years ago though I doubt they were original to that car. Interestingly a couple of the simulated lug nuts are broken off because some idiot tried to steal the "wheels" off the car. From what I understand that is quite common with those wheel covers.

  • @JimBronson
    @JimBronson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a heavy engine for a smaller car, and as mentioned it doesn't have posi. If you wanted something more race ready out of the box you'd have been better off with an L79 car 350hp 327 and lose 150 lbs off the front end. Headers, carb rejet, gears, you could get into the low mid 13's.

  • @tedh.8356
    @tedh.8356 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Pontiac always gets the "false" credit for starting the "Muscle Car" era, but muscle cars go back to the fifties! the Chrysler 300 series cars, the Chevy 55-57 with the small blocks and "Power Pack" heads and dual exhausts, the Pontiac 421 Catalinas, the Dodge and Plymouth 413's, Oldsmobile 88's, Chevy SS's with the 409's and 327's etc...Pontiac GTO's were never even close to the quickest or fastest's cars the Chevy's and Chrysler Hemi's take that honor with some Mustangs in there too but Pontiac mainly had the marketing, even Buick gets in there with the 425 engine in the Wildcats....

    • @1badhaircut
      @1badhaircut 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ted - No it isn't false. GTO was first because it was first to be CALLED a "muscle car". Also nothing else ever had ALL the ingredients --- can't be a large car - Pony car - or even compact --- must be intermediate, Studebaker Lark with an Avanti engine had the performance but no name and not intermediate. 413 Mopars had everything but no name or dress-up package. No cigar. And even GTO wasn't a "MUSCLE CAR" until that term was used --- and then everyone copied the recipe. Right ? The mechanical formula goes back to the '49 Olds 'Rocket 88' --- but that's not does qualify except as the first modern performance car.

    • @tedh.8356
      @tedh.8356 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually have to agree with you on your analogy of this, true it was the "marketing" that Pontiac did and being the lead mfg. on the use of the term "Muscle Car" that does give it the go ahead on the other car makers as to being considered the first true Muscle Car, my main point was in the sense of Performance, and to that point and as you even stated the Olds Rocket 88 of 49, and many other brands of which I'm not going to try and name them all , were all "Performance Cars" but not actually " Muscle Cars" I stand corrected....

    • @matrox
      @matrox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say the 62 SuperStock Dodges and Plymouths were first. Sure they had no fancy name but the were intermediate sized and you could by these race cars off the show room floor.

    • @jeremythompson9895
      @jeremythompson9895 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      55 Chrysler 300 was the first muscle car in my opinion. The first American car to make 300 horsepower since Duesenberg in 1928. Then the 56 Chrysler 300 with the 355 horsepower 354 Hemi was the first American car to surpass the 1 horsepower per cubic inch mark....even though the fuel injected Chevy 283 from 1957 gets false credit for it somehow. GM bias

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The GTO wasn't even the fastest car in 1964. A 426 Max Wedge Dodge/Plymouth would blow the doors off even a 389 Tri Power GTO. In fact a full size Chevy 409/425 or a full size Ford 427/425 probably would too. Pontiac just happened to have the best marketing strategy of any American manufacturer at the time

    He was wrong with the horsepower ratings. Corvette did have different exhaust manifolds but the main difference between the horsepower rating is: Corvette 425 horsepower was rated at a higher rpm 6200 0r 6400 rpm// Chevelle 375 horsepower was at 5600 rpm//

    • @markg7030
      @markg7030 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is not wrong. That is what Chevrolet published. 425 for the Vette and 375 for the Chevelle SS 396 in 1965.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A L37 the engine in the Z16, is a L78 with the L34 hydraulic cam, 375 wasn't likely far off. The cam in the L78/72 is a pretty hot factory cam high lift and duration than the L37 cam. Plus the hydraulic cam couldn't make power past 5600, the solid lifter BBC had no problem to 6500+. I was also the only BBC with rectangle port heads with a hydraulic cam.
      Now the only difference between the Corvette L78 and all the other L78 are the exhaust manifolds.
