    This is good stuff. I'm a brick restorationist. Tibby hasn't mentioned a flat S joiner. Here in the U.S. we call them a rat-tail. They are shaped like the concave joiner as shown, but flat. we use them in conjunction with the hawk and then come back along with the round tool, it makes the application a little more efficient, and the round tool gives a nice last compaction. Ive also come to the conclusion that packing the head joints after the bed joints is better because you are swiping up and down 3 to 4 times with new material that meshes nice with the loose bed mortar that squeezes up and down from the bed joints. This means that you have a soft wet joint top and bottom to the head joints with less material to make them smaller and stronger. Obviously, you want to finish the head joints first, as you demonstrated. This is a great video and really does show some great techinique, Im just a nerd for details and trying to share knowledge. good vid.

    Nice to see pointing done correctly I have employed so-called builders to do pointing for me over the years and not one of them were able to point properly. They will not clean out the joints and that is a must. They have morter all over the bricks. I end up doing the job myself which stops me from getting on with my work. There is a big shortage of skilled workers now, any Tom Dick or Harry can set themselves up as builders.

    I have been a pointer for 40 years. When I learned , apprentices hawked the mortar in but the goal was to graduate to the jointer method (much cleaner) In America we have pointing irons Narrow offset trowel ranging from 1/4” to 1” that we use like the jointer by selecting a tool slightly smaller than the joint ( cleanest method of all) but required following with a jointer for a concave joint. By far the most common in the USA. For me the gun was the messiest( most mortar on the face of the brick) but admittedly that might have been strictly operator error. Can’t teach an old dog new tricks 😂Having said this, everything in this video is very good information.and nothing is “ wrong” The best pointing video I have seen.

    Love the hawk method I sort of just stumbled upon that but I use a wooden float instead of the hawk as it was all I found in the basement! But I like the fact it’s rectangular as I was repointing a very old and uneven wall and I can put the long side of the board against the wall for even bits and use the short side when it gets really bumpy. 👍

    Very well explained! Thank you! Do you apply any weatherproof sealer onto the bricks after repointing?

    • @martingaynor5017
      @martingaynor5017 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      no need my friend. Those sealers prevent breathability. you end up with water trapped behind and frost damage can occur.
      worst thing invented in my opinion.

    Great video very informative witch is really helpful, I was just wondering how you price up a pointing job, for grinding and pointing per M2 and do you price it up per course of brickwork?

    That's a solid wall Tibby. You can see that by the way the bricks on some courses are fixed lengthways into the wall. So it was probably built with lime. It looks old enough. You're a lovely bloke and the video is very informative and you've got some good style there. However (and you know what that means), it would've benefited more from a lime mortar and not cement. Jus sayin bruv. Thanks for the vid.

      Thanks Tibby! I'm trying my first pointing tomorrow on an old breeze block stables. New pointing tools ordered, video watched and I'm ready to go! Easy to understand explanation and demonstration. I'm a 68 yr old female with a can do attitude! Thanks again! 😊

      Tibby, I think your presentation style is good, but I have to say that it is a great shame that you used cement instead of lime. Lime looks better and functions better. Why not do another presentation using a lime option in a part 2 video?

    • @martingaynor5017
      @martingaynor5017 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree but if you look closely it dosent look like lime as I cant see much aggregate after its raked out 👍

    Really great demonstration on raking out and repointing styles and method but I would not repoint a Victorian house like mine with a Portland cement mix, as this has trapped water in my old walls and I'm busy removing painstakingly the hard mortar someone used to prevent any further brick spalling. Will be repointing with a lime breathable mortar which will prevent water in the wall travelling up as far as it does now.

    Really good video. 😀. I have just started to re-point a wall and I found the digging out of the old cement very therapeutic. 🙂. I used a little round wood cutting drill set to a depth of one inch in my drill. 🙂. The cementing bit looks a bit more complex but after watching your video it doesn't look so daunting now. 😙.
