Alex. Having driven a truck for a good 20hrs in my playthrough so far. I have a few tips for you.
First: The centre console you took off and eventually lost can just be grabbed and flipped up to reveal the engine. It just hides the engine but it's more aesthetically pleasing.
Second: The area behind both rear wheels and the area on the other side opposite the fuel tank are physics-free storage areas. They behave the same way the baskets do and you would be wise to use them for storage.
Third: Moving forward I'd advise you to find as many baskets as you can and align them in the truck container for storage. Removing physics from as many items as you can is key to a headache-free playthrough. If you have any kind of crash almost all the items in your container are going to fly out.
Forth: If you want to install a Bus engine you're free too but speaking from experience. The truck engine really isn't that hard on Fuel and can comfortably sit at around 160 km/h. Going downhill you'll easily go over 200. Almost to the point that you won't be able to touch the accelerator for fear of crashing.
Fifth: Don't forget to use your dashboard for storage. It's a handy place to keep small items like bullets and pellets for the guns.
Finally: This is more so for fun if you want to try it. If you find any truck trailers you can attach multiple to your truck and it won't really affect the speed unless you're going uphill. In my playthrough, I have a flatbed Cap. One flatbed trailer and two storage trailers. It takes a little more skill to drive it safely bed it's pretty cool looking in your side mirror and seeing all your trailers cruising along behind you.
If anyone reads this give it some thumbs up so Alex can hopefully see it. These tips will really help him out. Even if it doesn't come from me though I hope he gets the info. This series is one of my new favs. It convinced me to get the game myself so that's saying something.
The first one, it was "noooooooooooo" moment for me
The centre cover for the engine doesn't just visually cover the engine, it also works as sound insulation. Without it, or having it open, the engine is much louder then when it's shut
I've had a truck for quite a while too, had 4 trailers at one point, a storage, two tankers, and a flatbed I managed to get a car onto using some of those wooden planks! The car fell out after about 1km though when the whole road train glitched out and basically went to space. Had to ditch one of the tankers to make it up a big hill too. I tried towing just two trailers at a time then coming back, but had to reload my save after the two I left at the top de-spawned.
And yes, baskits are great, I got a bed in the back of my truck with one of the legs in a basket and recently added a couch too by putting a upside down basket on the top of the seat then attaching it to the wall. I tried putting the kickstand of the moped in a basket, but unfortunately that doesn't get frozen.
Just so you're aware, the spot opposite the fuel tank is for holding barrels. It's a little finicky but you can lay two barrels on their side and the forks stop the physics of them

You can also put a spare wheel there if you want, really useful for the tanker version of the truck.
there are two spots for spare tires(or whatever fits) behind the rear tires that also freezes physics. if you have the patience you can fit more than two barrels on the side. extra jerry cans radiators whatever will stay haha.

I don't think he has his sound loud enough. He doesn't seem to notice the cans and barrels filling/emptying, nor hear when the brushes run out.
@@PropaneDragon ye, that's a major problem with a shocking number of youtubers. it's cuz having loud sounds while you're trying to concentrate on talking eloquently can throw you off. but like, at the cost of sucking at the game i think it's worth some speech errors.

@@pipedreamin He literally could have used the hose (That he purposefully went out of his way for 90 seconds in the starter home to get) to siphon oil out of the car, he even acknowledged that fact and decided against it LOL
@@trautsj I think it is because a subconscious fear of rabbits. Given that he doesn't seem to hear their cries, even if they're right behind him, that doesn't really surprise me.
Hurray! Restart! On the bright side of things, you now know a lot more about how the game works, and what to look for, what to bring along.
EDIT: That was one helluva lucky spawn! Could even pretend it is a direct continuation from where the previous run pwned you.
If this luck holds, you'll have a bus engine in the next episode, and then you'll have to drive the whole rest of the way with nothing to look forward to...
Tbh that was a concern I had… it was fun for so long cause he couldn’t get any luck for a truck to spawn, if he gets a truck + bus engine it’s going to be less fun imo
i mean an ak would be nice, plus seeing the other biomes. Make a goal to see what's at the top of the water towers?
He could maybe do community poles for challenges to do in the subsequent episodes, or take suggestions in the comments of these videos in the first hour or so after uploading (so he doesn't have to keep revisiting the page to read comments for hours and days afterwards when he needs to do other stuff).
i ended up with a tanker truck, bus engine and so much diesel i don't know what to do with, and now the game isn't fun. just drive, sleep, drive etc.
FYI, you can empty the car's engine of oil into another container by holding the engine and "filling" the container as you would any other container (RMB) - you could have had 5L more oil!

it's like one of those needlessly rare and expensive trim pieces for a car, pretty much the only way to get a new one is by taking it off a parts car/donor car haha
The tachometer is accurate, you were quite seriously overreving your engine
it's a big 6.6L ohv inline 4 pushrod diesel
Made very tough so it'll tolerate it a bit, but I wouldn't go revving the tits off it while you've got less than half the oil it needs haha
It was driving me nuts watching him remove the engine cover and roof hatch instead of opening them like he should have.

At that monument, it is wise to check the dumpster as well. I often find revolvers/ak47 and/or ammo in them. The roof and behind the garage can often times spawn useful items or fluids. A few extra minutes looking around the monuments can really be beneficial.
Like others have said, stock up on the scooter baskets. They reeeally come in handy quickly for storing up things you find. Can easily and quickly have every item and every color paint can at your disposal when you need it.
Lastly, my ocd and inner mechanic is cringing so bad that you didn't take the few seconds to swap oil from the car engine to the truck.
Omfg me too, it takes like 5 seconds to take out the engine and pour the oil out just like a jerry can... Especially when he found a truck with a PERFECT engine and radiator, which you never do!! I have like 24 hours of game time and have yet to find a perfect radiator of any kind, let alone for the bus/truck...
Maybe crowbar is used to open boxes which you find in the houses?
Maybe in the future, but not yet, so far the boxes are nothing, not openable.
It's just a weapon and a reference to half-life.

Urine, from The Long Drive Wiki:
"The player is able to drink any of the liquids to be found in game. Doing so will fill their bladder. The bladder's contents can be urinated back out at will by pressing and holding the 'P' key. The bladder does not decrease on its own, thus it is not like a hunger system. The bladder has a capacity of 2 litres, its level of contents is displayed on an onscreen bar while the player is drinking or urinating. Whatever liquid the player drinks will be urinated back out in the same form. If the player drinks two litres of water they will urinate pure water. If they drink 1 litre of oil and 1 litre of water they will urinate out a 50/50 mix of oil and water. Ingesting dangerous liquids such as gasoline appears to have no ill effect on the player, likewise alcohol has no intoxicating effect. Thanks to this, the bladder can be considered a useful way of storing 2 litres of liquid for emergencies. Having a full bladder is not harmful to the player and urination is not necessary. Having an empty bladder also has no harmful effects."
For extra storage, remove the rear seats.
Pretty sure bladders aren't fitted with rear seats.

There's a rusted revolver in the chimney. The easiest way to get to it is getting it through the door behind the stove, getting behind the stove and shoving yourself inside by using the Q key by default.

I think it would be cool to put an actual bed in the back of the truck next time you find one, a safe area to sleep
Considering the cacti and cowboy hats, the game is more likely to be set in Mexico or the Southwest US.
a tip for the baskets, if you drop them on the surface you want to attach them to first they will level themselves out better when you attach it.

The fact that the bit from central panel went into space made me a bit sad because you didn't need to take it off, it opens up.
That's the best start you could possibly ask for. You get the best car at the beginning (back seats can be removed on the estates to create a van) and your first stop has a fully functional truck!
Took me almost 150kms and finding countless shitty busses to get my hands on one!
Trucks have some racks on each side where physics locks, good place to store jerry cans and barrels.
Just be careful nothing glitches through as when frame rates tank everything can explode.

If I ever own a Lada 1300 estate, I will definitely have a giraffe hood ornament in it. =)
On the down-side, you got killed by a glitch truck...

And a Lada, which means you have to crash into everything you see on the road, for that is the Russian way...
By the way, Alex, the truck is a military-style vehicle, so you have the roof hatch so that a gunner can be stationed up there for conflict scenarios or a vehicle/convoy commander can be up there to have a good view around them if it's being operated in a convoy...
Im so happy for you. You finally got a truck without dying immediately. One thing I hope you'll do is make your truck look as nice as it could possibly look. That means, the paint of your choice on every part, every part fully cleaned and polished and just make the truck worth it. Anyways, really enjoyed that episode

@12:43 as you approach the building I think you can see an engine sitting on the roof of the wooden shack next to the restaurant. I was hoping you would back the truck up to climb up and search. You get so distracted by small stuff you don't look around.
Use the wooden boards to get to the roofs, that's what they are there for
Or, go outside the kitchen door, walk around the side of the house, and use the stairs....

@@vladtheimpala457 There's an outhouse and dumpster near the diner, or if all else fails, you pull your truck up to it and jump off of it onto the roof. I don't recall seeing any long wooden planks at the diner.
I used two of those to drive a car onto a flatbed trailer pulled by my truck! It glitched out and fell off after about 1km though sadly.

@Failrace to ease up your filling and mounting stuff, with a object in hands press Q to look around and interact with stuff without blocking your view by the object in hands :)
Fun idea: You can have one of those dolls as your co-pessenger in your truck and give her a name
The speedo is the longest needle in the clock.
The black thing on top is a hatch that you can open. You should always check the roof and behind the buildings as well. Best of luck with your new truck!

I can't put my finger on exactly why, but these are fascinating and I am impatient for more of you playing The Long Drive.
The best way to paint cars in the game and get the colours uniform is figure out how many panels needs to be painted and figure out how many times you can spray before the spray can runs out and spray each panel the same amount. For example a regular car in the game has 7 parts to paint and lets say a spray can has 80 sprays. You can paint each part with 11 sprays. You will end up with 3 unused sprays left but the important thing is, your car will be the same colour all around.
You can fill a can with the oil from your old engine btw
I'd totally siphon it out and put it in the truck. Chances are the truck will be the end vehicle.

Ive seen so many playthroughs of this game and no one ever bothers using the sword, even though it one-shots rabbits while the piddly starting pea-shooter doesnt always.
You can take engine or radiator and fill the jarry can (or any other thing that can be filled), same way as you fill an engine, radiator, fuel tank,... The hose is for empty fuel tanks. And as I remeber engines have cap also on the bottom. And if you hold "Q" key you can move your cursor without moving what you are holding in hands. It's handy when you repair your car, or fill anything.
For the truck it is actually very helpful to play with manual transmission (maybe with clutch, IDK, I haven't tried it without) as you can downshift into 2nd or 3rd gear and it will stop you much faster then the brakes will.

The truck is a 1 in all vehicle in this game. It's has plenty of storage, it's a survivor of a vehicle, and you can sleep in the back so to not worry about rabbits.
For the truck you are gonna need bins, It has a lot of room but if you put too many loose things in there it basically explodes.
28:09 What you think is a rev counter is a boost gauge for the Turbo Diesel engine. It is probably also why the truck is moving at good speed. You found a GREAT truck right off the bat. I found one in my play through that had no wheels, engine, doors, grille, or any of the covering hatches. It was a husk. The husk was in mint condition though with no wear or tear on it. I stuffed my small car tires in it and my 2 stroke engine in it from my car and also put the front doors of my car on it. It looked and drove RIDICULOUSLY.
What you think is a boost gauge is actually a rev counter, it's a naturally aspirated 6.6 ohv diesel lol
Alex was just overreving it like crazy by driving everywhere in 4WD low ratio mode
@@televisionandcheese That didn't look like a rev meter to me at all. Especially since there was another gauge that was one.
In my experience the siphon is always in the attic to start, and the yellow cans can be equipped to the hot bar.
Radio says your in what's left of the U.S. and there's somewhere in the lower hundred thousands people left. Also the engine cover inside the truck rotates. Don't have to remove it. Same thing with the hatch on the too of the truck. I use the the hole for scouting with the binoculars. Try not to spin in the truck, it rolls really well.
Yay so glad you started again! Was gutted when glitchy weirdness ended it.

You can pick up the engines and radiators and use them to fill other radiators and engines without siphoning. They act like containers. Instead of leaving all that oil in the old car, pour it into your new engine. You can also get water from cacti
Good clean tires, rims & hubcaps = less accidents and loss of control @ high speeds.
Paint sprayers can be refilled by pointing at other paint sprayers and pressing "R" repeatedly. Paint reloads as the color you are holding.
Blood is also sometimes found in game in vehicle fuel tanks and other containers. Blood found in fuel tanks or containers works very well as a coolant in radiators if the player has no access to water [1].
Alex. The staircase to the attic is around the side of the house. You were staring right at the access door at one point after you glitch jumped up there.

Now that you have the truck, I'm pretty sure you can more effectively pull the tanker trailer without swerving down the road. Just a thought.
The easiest way to orient the basket is to just drop it on whatever you want to attach it to, then pick it up and attach it.

Best... Episode... Ever. Hurray for jeff. Hurray for the truck. Now you have to make it perfect, find a bus engine, get an AK, and hold off waves of rabbits from the roof like a zombie apocalypse movie.
The truck engine doesn't seem to bad, if it's not glitched. I'd say you got up to 120-130km/h, and what looked like 4'000 RPM when you have a 2'000 redline. :) Can you swap out one of those other speedometers that can read higher saying as you found one laying on its own in the starting garage?
I was a bit frustrated with leaving the back door unpolished. Saying as we got the truck so fast, we need to see the truck polished into perfect condition, orange and black, and maybe a couple of polished bikes in the back, matching orange and black. That's what I can think of, other challenges could be done too to make the journey entertaining saying as we have the truck now.

For future reference you can squeeze water out of the cactus straight into the radiator. It only gives you about .1l per piece of cactus but it soon adds up.

Hey Alex, just to give you a heads up for the next time... You can find a Barrel of water at the back of the house, as well as the stairs that lead up to the attic where you found the syphon.
Edit: You can also create a makeshift barrel holder if you find enough of the steel bars.
Edit #2: While driving or in the car, you can hold Tab and it will center the camera view.
While driving, press C for an external view (can zoom in/out with mouse wheel). I find it better for driving and dodging rocks.

in the restaurant place, you can open the counter where there is a gap to get to the back instead of jumping over it
You DON'T need to remove the engine cover inside the truck, it can be opened like a door. Same with the roof hatch!

I invented a little ruleset for this game for my own entertainment
1: restart the game until you get a completely rusted chassis
2: remove everything from the car except the wheels, tyres, engine, and radiator before you leave the starting house
3: no "improving" your car at the starting house
4: no taking any spare items with you along the way
5: You can't use wire brushes, sponges, or cleaning spray on anything except the chassis and only once each
The aim is to create the shiniest vehicle possible
Oh yeah. no taking any inventory items from the starting house. you can grab them later though
