- This is a collectors video about Epic racing to the E3 with all the pressure from Microsoft to present Gears of War for the first time.. It's really a fantastic video that shows how much suffering game devs go through when management comments come from those who don't understand gaming at all..
If it was up to Microsoft, the chainsaw would have never seen the light of day and the game would have been another generic shooter.. Thank god everything turned out as it did.
If anyone from Epic reads this, and in case it needs to be pulled down, I just want to say guys.. YOU ROCK.. Microsoft didn't deserve such a great game how much beef they gave you.. All of us Gears of War fans thank you! - เกม

The documentary was fake and edited. No one was going to cut the chainsaw. That executive woman was talking about something else and they clipped her to make it sound like she wanted to cut the most important weapon in the game lmao, because they needed a "bad guy" for the documentary."
The game always included the chainsaw, this argue was about a trailer, not the game. The Documentary needed some created drama, so they created fake drama.

This is such a great "time capsule" of what game development used to be like in early 2000. Calling a guy "walking hr nightmare", discussing boob size of an NPC, taking about crunch in the open, actually playing live demos on stage... This stuff just doesn't happen anymore.

I'm glad that they tried real hard to keep the chainsaw. Because it became one of the most iconic weapon in video games. Once you see the chainsaw gun , you know what game you are playing

The story wasn’t as good but the gameplay is still phenomenal. Almost 20 years and imo gears has consistently maintained the greatest gameplay of any popular modern shooter franchise

People dont give it credit, but the Hammer of Dawn was fucking revolutionary for the time. Insane experience using it for the first time. left me in awe,

I’ve gotta give it to the guy, he lead a team to develop and make one of my favourite games series of all time.
There is no way in which any hater can skew it to not give him credit, he was the lead designer.

What a great time capsule of what life was like back in the day! It's the perfect blend of cringe and nostalgia. The fact that the game still holds up today goes to show how much of a labor of love this was for the team that worked on it.
Epic also didn't want to sell the maps as DLC, they wanted to do what they did with Unreal on PC forever, keep giving free content to keep players engaged and around. They believed more in the day 1 sales of the games in the franchise, so they wanted to keep people there so they'd get huge sales on Gears 2 and so on. MS ofcourse saw things differently, and that began the 1st map packs delays that went on forever, until Epic got upset enough to start putting out little blogs explaining that the maps were actually done early and it was MS struggling with them. They eventually gave in to MS after a final behind-closed-doors sitdown where clearly MS dropped bags of $$$$ on Epic, and the transparency disappeared and the $DLC$ map packs became a thing in Gears.

Completely fake. They were NEVER going to cut it and that executive woman NEVER even suggested that. These are edited clips, the filmmakers making the documntary needed a "bad guy" so they clipped it together to look like she was pushing that. She never even made that suggestion, she is talking about something else entirely.

I think it's the company community that motivated these devs to get the game out the door. When you have a positive community drive - work is done with great enthusiasm.

I feel your description for the video is spot-on as well and seriously...thank God for the chainsaw! Gears of War was the game that got me hooked to the Xbox 360 and I can't believe how far it's come. I actually just bought GOW 3 and I can't wait to get started. Thanks again!
