I was at this game when I was like 10 and my dad persisted that we leave with everyone else at half but my brother and I couldn’t leave and it turned out to be one of the best comebacks in CFB history
Supposedly all Patterson said was something to the effect of, "This isn't unwinnable. We've made adjustments, ignore the scoreboard and go out and play like you know you can."
This game was an instant classic. I remember when Stadium was airing encore reruns of this game. Kohlhausens performance made him a TCU legend!!! This felt like a game with very high stakes.
Everyone brings up how it would have been different if Oregon's starting qb hadn't been hurt. Well, same could be said for it being a different game if TCU's starting qb hadn't been a meathead before the day of the game. And besides, what happened to Oregon's defense in the second half? They got beat by a 5th year walk on who had never started a game before.
The Alamo bowl has a history of having epic games. This one, Baylor vs Washington with an RG3 led comeback, Texas vs Iowa, amongst others. Been blessed to have to been to all of them.
I remember watching this game. Almost went to bed but remembered that Momma didn't raise a fair weather TCU Alum/fan. I yelled my heart out when we won that game.
Oh man I was at this game and it's between this and the game the Rangers beat the Yankees to go to the World Series for the first time as far as my all time in-person sports experiences (TCU grad/fan). I see everyone saying "they only won cuz Adams got hurt" which I will admit is probably true but nobody mentions that TCU was without their QB Trevone Boykin. He was a Heisman finalist the year before and having another great year. (Josh Doctson their best WR and a first rounder (bust I admit) was also out for this game.) I woke up that day to notifications that Boykin got sent home that morning cuz he got drunk and punched a cop the night before. (Idiot) I almost just said "F it" and didn't drive down for the game and was regretting going at halftime, especially since the Alamo Dome ran out of beer (WTF) but I'm so glad I drove down and stuck around - What a freaking game!
Yeah the injury argument has some weight but, imo, your backups should be just as good. Thats their whole point to be a backup lol, control the position if injury happens or if someones out 💁♂️ like as a Texas fan, we were handling Bama damn well in the NC until they injured Mccoy, after that the offense couldnt do anything 😥
I watched this all unfold. At the half the for some reason the game didn't feel out of reach for TCU to me. The Ducks benefited from great field position and big plays. When Adams went down, you could really sense the game could turn around. I also love the story of the TCU QB. It was only game he ever played for TCU.
I remember this game lmao when Adams went down and TCU scored that first TD it was a wrap you can see it on the Oregon players they knew Lockie was buns 😂

Oregon laxed on D. Doesn't really matter if your QB is out. Giving up 31 in a half is all your defense's fault. One more 3 and out and the game was over.
@@misternibbles7426 if we have out 3 All Americans on offense playing...we score at least 20 in the 1st half and keep our defense off the field a considerable amount of time. TCU played without their best players much longer than Oregon did and still won the game.

As an oregon fan this one stings, we all know that Adams getting hurt shut down everything Oregon had going. But didn't TCU have to have their backup for this game? Nobody talks about that at all.
I remember watching the 1st half of this game and turning it off. Got a close game alert in the 4th quarter and was like there's no way TCU is coming back
The story these vids don’t tell is that the TCU quarterback not only was called on at the last minute to play when Boykin was suspended but he’d just lost his father that week.
I remember being so depressed at halftime that I called my girlfriend in California and told her that I was going to bed. Later, my phone kept ringing and when I answered it my girlfriend was screaming, " turn the game back on now! TCU is doing unbelievable!" She was a better fan than I was that night. What a game. One for the ages, for sure.
The Northwest TCU alumni group in Oregon was at a game watching party in Portland. Probably a quarter of the Frogs in the restaurant left at halftime. To this day many of us would swear the comeback didn't happen. Glad to see it did.
At 15:26, look in the upper, right-hand corner. You'll see TCU offensive coordinator (black top, khaki pants) buckle over and fall. Bram Kohlhausen accidentally racked him when they were celebrating. He was down for a few minutes.
Everybody thought this game was over at halftime, but as a duck fan, when I saw Vernon Adams get injured and Jeff Lockie came in, I had flashbacks to earlier in the season and thought, “Oh god, I hope 31 points is enough”. Definitely a painful memory as a duck fan, but it makes it somewhat easier knowing that Oregon blowing the lead had more to do with injuries than it did them just choking.
I remember watching that game on tv. Oregon got over confident after the first half. Then their center got hurt and replaced him with some guy with ten rolls of tape on his hand. They never moved after that. The defense then got shredded and the offense just threw the ball all over the place. Kudos to TCU.
Fun fact: in 1972, former TCU football player Kent Waldrip was the first college athlete to sue for worker’s compensation benefits after being injured in his capacity as a *semi pro* student athlete on the team.
