Man, these loops at the beginning of your videos…all great! I just found your channel after a few years of learning to play guitar, and learn to create good loops, and i have my goal now! Keep it up!!
Until recently hadn't known/appreciated that many "Guitar Cab Speakers," including Classics like the Celestion, have shocking steep high frequency cutoffs around 4-5kHz! It makes everything about dialing in the Amp and getting a "Real" Amp sound much easier if the High Cut and Low Cut match the Frequency Response Chart for the particular Speaker. A Speaker with a high frequency response of 4kHz will be completely borked by a significantly higher "High Cut" setting in the HX Stomp. I'm getting the best tones ever by paying close attention to the Real Speaker Specs. Getting it right makes a huge difference and is the "Secret Sauce" in making a Modeler sound and "feel" like a Real Amp.
Good tip to look at the spec sheet for the speakers. It was a revelation to me when I followed a JC tip about using the Global EQ to rein in the top. Will look to get some more detail by bring this into my cab block.
I did a very similar build in Stomp yesterday. This sounds so great. Side note, Andy is the man. I love his sound and his new delay pedal is awesome. I may put it on a minimalist board, but for now this patch is scratching the itch.
His JHS pedal is based on the Angry Charlie, a "modded" Marshall-in-a-box type of affair. (I don't own an HX Stomp, but I DO own the AT+.) It's worth mentioning, Andy doesn't really roll back his lead sound at all - he rolls back guitar volume on the "pushed" sounds. (That I have observed, anyway.) I've found the Keeley Blues driver sound in an Xotic RC Booster V2, with the second gain channel engaged, just in case anyone is interested. (Gain at 10:00, Volume at 11, Bass rolled off to 10-ish, and Treble straight up. Secondary gain is at 10, also.)
This is lovely. I enjoy following you building these as it encourages me to tweak them until it sounds right for me and my guitar. Thanks as always for sharing. I'm getting so much more out of my HX Stomp from your endless expertise.
Took the plunge recently and traded my Boss GT100 for the Helix floor. It's a fairly intuitive bit of kit but somewhat overwhelming given the sheer amount of options when setting up a patch. I ade a pretty good clean sound but my lead sound was a bit disappointing. Then I found your channel and within minutes of watching another one of your videos I had programmed a really nice lead sound. Will have a go at this one later today, but am admiring your playing in all your vids
@@jessenicholson1777 I've got a dual delay going with one set to quarter notes, and the other to dotted eighths like he does. A little modulation on each repeat to get that slightly out of tune sound he does. About 25% depth on each repeat. 18% phase. Try that out.
Did some similar yesterday (funny) - choosed the Vermin Dist. and Texas Ch.2 (quite low gains/drives) - cleans up very nice by volume knob on guitar too 😃
Hit the like button on the first couple lead line notes. Sometimes the slow phrasing and feel is so much more powerful than the too many notes Tom Quayle hybrid thing. This track makes for great morning inspiration!
That was definitely in the AT tone and style camp, but still sounded like you (that’s a good thing). Yes please do drop it in the folder. As a side note, I would love to see what you make of his new Keeley Halo delay pedal if perhaps you could get hold of one for a side by side comparison with the HX stomp. (Edit, i see you kind of tackled this anyway - cheers)
In one of his videos he talks about how the Memory Man dual setup works. Something like the first one feeds into the second one but then there’s a part about routing the outputs or effects sends to R and L cabs. I think that has something to do with how wide it sounds. But I can’t figure out the routing of this.
I was thinking about the price of the Halo and wondered if the HX stomp could do a decent job i that, so I wondered “ I bet Cordy already figure that out” and here it is! 😊
Really nicely done. I’ve been working on my own Andy Timmons-esq patch for a week or so. It looks like we made some I’ve the same choices, and a few differences. I’m going to look at maybe adding the Valve Driver to my setup as well. And the Heliosphere… I had forgotten all about that - I’ve got the Glitz reverb going at the end of mine to get more of that diffuse texture.
Cheers B! I think the Heir Apparent/Prince of Tone is actually based on a Blues Breaker pedal - but that might actually be a good idea too!! In the Distortion/Overdrive mode and higher gain maybe
Hey John in the read me section of your patches your talking about a free TONEJUNKIE IR thats used for the Andy Timmons presets. Where can i find that one is it on the IRs folder? Thanks!
Was annoyed I couldn’t get to Frome last night for the gig… Andy Timmons is pretty exceptional 😊 Apparently Paul McCartney is doing a warm up set at the same venue tonight so may try to go…
I would really like to hear you play that or something like that with that throaty or warm tubey sound going on using say a Fender Strat (if you could get your hands on one)...with noiseless pickups for comparison. I have always wondered if the noiseless pickups would translate as well....as that is what I have Fender Player Plus (2022)...( my only strat).....I really dig that sort of indescribable tone that comes from some zones on the guitar neck ..usually around the 9th to 12th fret I think.....or any observations you might have....to respond....Of course I will check it out on mine once you drop it........that is the kind of tone that inspires me!...
I love Andy and always try to recreate his tone on modelers. Currently in the HX Stomp I’m using the second channel of the Lonestar in snapshot mode with 3 different gain levels per snapshot (you can get it clean enough). The Compulsive drive gets good lead tones as well. Ive also had good results with one of the J45 models (Andy used JMP Marshalls before using the Lonestars) with a tube driver boosted with an 808 for lead tones (Andy uses less gain than perceived so careful with the gain knobs). That bluesdriver tone I feel is better recreated with amp gain, the reason he uses the blues driver is to recreate a Marshall style overdrive, there was a time he used a Mesa Boogie Stileto for this tone. Please share this preset, sounds great!
Hi, are you connecting the Helix to a audio card, or connecting it to an amp ? Im using this patch but it doesn't sound the same as yours.. I'm using helix native.
Great tone John! I've not seen any new patches in my folder for sometime, am I missing something? Thanks as always for your knowledge and inspiring playing.
Hey John! I think Andy would like your tone regardless as well as your playing! But couple things I think might help.... He really only uses a compressor for funky rhythm and chicken picken. His clean tone is with the blues driver gain on high but guitar volume knob low (with a treble bleed). He didnt really start using Lonestar until after the resolution album. That album was mostly an old Marshall JMP and a Plexi. If there's anything sound you like off that album I can send you exactly what gear he used... A big part of his tone is the cruiser pickups, I haven't found anything else that really does what they do, his bridge pickup I believe is based off a Duncan JB, he referred to it as a Jeff Beck but I think alot of people thought that's what JB stood for when it was really jazz blues
I'm really only interested in his newer tones to be fair! If you check out the Rig Rundown - the dual channel compressor seems to me that he's using one side always on, and the right hand side he specifically says he uses for the country thing? And yeh the treble bleed blues driver thing he shows - sounds awesome!! Need to try a Blues Driver I think...
@@johnnathancordy blues driver and Nobels are some drives I really wanna see in the next couple of helix updates. If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend taking an hour and set down and listen to the entire resolution album from start to finish. I think it will surprise you
Wait for some reason I thought Resolution was the older stuff - like Cry for You where the lead tone is a bit more marshally - less smooth and thinner? Resolution is now added to spotify for my long drive later....CHEERS!
@@johnnathancordy cry for you is the early stuff, resolution is now more middle, but it's his best tone album, aside from probably the sgt pepper album.
@@johnnathancordy Sorry John, maybe being daft, but I can't see it? I have access to JC Lead and JC EXP preset libraries, so maybe I need to add something else?
I had this issue too, and it turns out the link changed after his account got hacked. Shoot him an email and he can send you a new link. Sorted it out for me.
Great tone but I don't think the single coils are appropriate here. Your bottom end sounds too loose and clip slightly when you dig in a bit. Andy usually plays with a dirty sound but cleans it with his Ibanez treble bleed on the volume. He can then blend up clean and dirtier notes by picking harder or smoother. For me this is where his magic comes from: dynamic playing that controls a dynamic tone. For me, his YT vid playing On your Way Sweet soul is a masterclass of tone control.
100% agree about Andy's tone getting better with age, and how weirdly rare that is. Petrucci is another guy whose tone I think has progressively gotten worse since the early 2000s.
Hard agree. I love all 'eras' of Andy's guitar sounds, but JP has definitely gotten worse. The peak was SFAM for sure. His tones from the late 90s to early 2000s were my favourites.
I don't know that you can blame hearing damage, for recordings anyway as that's what producers are for. Live, yeah plausible in that situation. Id hope not tho as he uses a helix live lol (or so i heard anyway)
Thanks!
Best Helix tones on the web man. Super inspiring
Was literally watching Andy describing his tone and delay ... then you come up with this👍
I tried - hopefully it's something to build on at least!
