    Charles, an abused child, being cared for and protected by Edwin who knows he is about to die so without sharing that information tells Charles 1. Hey I’m dead and it’s not so bad 2. Look you can still interact with things 3. Look how cool you can walk through walls! Then READS him to “sleep” - a childlike experience of parental love that Charles may have never had as an abused child…. THAT SCENE THAT SCENE THAT SCENE!! All the while Edwin had been bullied, murdered and sent to hell for 70 years and HIS FIRST ACT BACK ON EARTH is to be KIND!!??????? He is the best character I love him. And it recontextualizes all his bitchiness and Charles’ forgiveness of it earlier in the show

    When Simon said "do you think being the way we are has to be torture" it hit me so hard because as a queer person ive had this same thought. Especially when youve just figured yourself out, its so hard. There comes a point when youre like "will it hurt forever? Am i ever going to have any positive experiences regarding this? Does being me have to be this painful?". Edwin's whole journey really hits home for me

    We also didn't see that much of hell, keep in mind that Charles took a shortcut straight th Edwin, because he followed the map Edwin made backwards. Somebody blew up the photos of the map and the different pages of the notebook with all the little notes on the different levels Edwin wrote and the implications of some of them are WILD.

    The only guy not smitten with Edwin is the one he wants most -- but at least Charles will always be there for him. And they actually talked. Maybe not the ideal place to have the talk, but we didn't have to wait six seasons for it.

    Yes a 2nd season of The Sandman is coming. Netflix announced it some time ago, but didn't say when it was coming. I hope Dead Boys will pop up on it too. Ya Edwin's milkshake does seem to bring all the boys to the yard! I really hope Dead Boy does get another season.

      @@Syntell okay, hear me out. Would Edwin have stayed in hell if Charles had rejected him? Is part Hell for him thinking he is damned to being unloved and rejected (you both picked up that the Charles and his classmate would have been taught that who they loved would have brought eternal damnation), or is part of his being able to leave hell being that he can't leave his torment without telling Charles how he feels about him? He'd just take hell with him.
      [Also, production wise, it would have been really weird watching them try to have that conversation in front of an impatient Night Nurse plus Nico and Crystal]

      @bingleyausten 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@OldManFerdiad Yes, and he was on the verge of having that conversation with Charles when the Night Nurse appeared. Perhaps his fear of Charles's reaction was part of what alerted the doll spider to him

      @@OldManFerdiad i like hearing people's different interpretations of this scene. personally i think that edwin has relatively little self-hatred about his sexuality (especially considering the time he came from), and his repression is more about ignorance, general edwardian emotional repression, and having it drilled into his head that homosexuality isn't socially acceptable. i think he was suddenly gripped by the fear that they wouldn't make it out of hell and charles would never know how he felt. was it a totally irrational decision to stop everything and have The Talk on the stairs? yes, but not even edwin is perfectly rational all of the time :)

    I ❤rewatching this series with you both. I was super excited when I saw that you were reacting to this series. What I loved most about this show is its themes. Each character had a moment where they had to face their fears so they could accept themselves. I believe acceptance of oneself no matter how good or bad the different parts may be is one the themes that runs through this show. Whether it is Edwin and his sexuality and feelings for Charles. Charles and his trauma from abuse. The walrus character and his desire to return to his true self or Niko and her love of love. They are all on a journey towards acceptance of themselves and their identity. Also, I loved the vulnerability of Edwin’s confession and there couldn’t be a better response than the one Charles gave. I was so sad to see that such an innocent like Edwin had to experience being killed over and over again in hell while also watching himself being eaten. This torment ends once he is able to face himself and his fears through his confession.

    I think Neil Gaiman came in to write the scenes with Death and Despair, although he isn't that involved in this series, I guess he's around. The Endless siblings are (in no particular order), Dream, Desire, Despair, Destiny, Death, Destiny, and Delirium.

    Wasn't Simon one of the boys who sacrificed Edwin? If so, one of his offences was misusing magic books (somehow representing internalised homophobia), hence the punishment.

  • @mayaenglish5424
    @mayaenglish5424 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Haha I was also screaming at them to run faster, but on reflection, I don't think Edwin felt he'd be able to confess to Charles without this imminent threat behind him. (Also this is totally my own sad thoughts with little evidence but I bet a small portion of his repressed Edwardian being still thought it was a hell worthy offence to be gay and maybe he wanted to get it over with IN hell in case he was snatched up by demons again the second he finished so as not to get his hopes up about escape.)

    in the sandman series it's shown that despair is desire's twin sister, which suggests some interesting possibilities for their future involvement with the boys. (a lot of people have speculated that the cat king is somehow related to desire, which would make a lot of sense with his behavior & looks - i'd love to see that played out in a future season.) and despite her ominous appearance, despair is actually one of the more reasonable endless siblings. i'd much rather be in the clutches of despair than desire.

    20:34 It's not quite that cut and dry I'm afraid. I highly recommend you read Sandman: Season of Mists if you want to better understand the inner workings of this particular interpretation of hell. (I recommend all of Sandman, it's great).
