I've watched this show twice now and what I find fascinating it's how every detail is important and is a potential foreshadowing.
Take the moment Charles is searching for a book for Niko's case, when Edwin tells him to take a blue book, he takes a pink one and ask if it's this one. It was not, at the moment, but it is lattely the book in wich they find the solution to the case.
And it always works like that. Every details that seems weird, or object on wich your attention is drawn even if it's subbtle will be use for something, announce something, is of some use at a time.
I know it's a quite common thing to do for a serie, but I find it particullarly well done here.
Yes on how when Edwin gets uncomfortable with the baby doll and turs its head it foreshadows SPOILER ALERT ( when the monster in hell is made from baby doll parts and Edwin is FRIGHTENED)
I personally want to thank Steve Yockey and co for their amazing Neil Gaimany fanfiction. The man is doing a fabulous job. (Apparently he read the comics as a kid and loved them, I don't know if anyone else involved did but they act like they really get Neil's general vibe).
So, funny story. I got spoiled on the whole ‘Edwin looking dreamily at Charles’ by Twitter. But I also wasn’t spoiled because it was only screenshots. So I just assumed that the poster was taking second long screenshots of the boys looking pretty. So when I finally saw the episode, I got the full effect (aka my brain falling out of my mouth).
Edwin’s reasoning for helping out ghosts also just SCREAMS catholic guilt, and I hate it. It makes sense, but I hate it for him.

So, Edwin's reasoning for helping out ghosts is so he can "make a case for leniency". basically, he's hoping that all the good things he's done in helping out lost souls will convince whoever's in charge that he doesn't belong in Hell. This maps very well onto what a lot of religious, specifically Christian queer people have had to deal with regarding bigotry. We're told that our queerness is a "sin" and that when we die, we'll go to Hell for it. We have to "atone" by praying and committing more to God to avoid a horrible fate.
While I don't think Edwin knew he was queer until The Cat King showed up, he's known for a long time that there was...something different about him. Something that made him stand out from the other boys in his school. This gets even more fucked up when you find out that the chant the other boys were saying while summoning the demon that killed Edwin was "Mary Ann", a slang term for queer people in the 1900s.
TLDR; Edwin's trying to compensate for a supposed mistake he made when in truth, he did nothing wrong, which is a feeling many Christian queer people will immediately recognize.
All these cases are so good I could watch this show do monster-of-the-week episodes for 8 seasons.
It has been hilariously noted how Edwin’s negative charisma and Edwardian repression has netted him SEVERAL love interests. And on that note I would like to posit that Charles falls more on the possessive side rather than jealous when it comes to Edwin. Key distinction being that I think he has no problem with people liking Edwin (of course they would Edwin is the best it just makes sense to him) and they can date, but the problem comes when someone tries to take Edwin away. A lot of his irritation about the Cat King comes from the fact that he keeps stealing Edwin away with no explanation given and nothing either of them can do about it. Staying together is the most important thing to the two of them and they don’t like anything that threatens that. Similar to his situation with Crystal where I think he sees it as yes they’ll date and Edwin will also be around, if Edwin were to date Charles would also be around. There wouldn’t really be a moving out scenario, leaving each other isn’t conceived as an option.
2:34 LMAO Although I totally see Hale Appleman, I think if the Cat King had a bigger age gap to the actor who plays Edwin, he would've come off as *more* predatory than the writers were necessarily intending. (Obviously the characters have an age gap, but the actors are, and look, close in age.) I think it was one of the ways that casting an actor like Lukas Gage was definitely intentional on the part of the creator to subtly subvert some of the stereotypes this type of sex pest gay-villian trope.
I still find it hard to believe the actor who plays Edwin this is his first acting job.
People who have interviewed have mentioned how in depth he's gone into the character and knows a lot.
It just makes you love him more. It seems as Edwin is the fan favourite.
For me it's partly that dry sarcastic humour that us Brits have lol.
I still want someone to write Sherlock having a close death experience. He meets them and Edwin teaches Sherlock about being an investigator. Neither are fandoms I write in.

George was in a short film and school plays, so he was not completely inexperienced, but the dedication is out of this world. I love him so much.

I am LIVING for your reactions to this series!! (Also I saw your tags on tumblr about the rotating train set in episode one!) I’m not going to spoil anything, but keep an eye on the color of Charles’ shirt in the next few episodes. I’m super excited to see your reaction to ep5 because your commentary and the things you notice are very similar to what I think and notice :) (Also one of my favorite things about this show is the cinematography. Even though I have some conflicting opinions about Charles/Crystal, the shots of them sitting on Crystal’s bed with the greenish beige frame and both of them wearing black and red were gorgeous.) (ALSO Edwin’s color is blue and Charles’ is red, and those were also the colors of the starfish Niko said were in love.)
Can’t wait for you to do the back half. This show gets better with every episode!

What you said at the end about this show giving you everything you want is absolutely how I feel about Dead Boy Detectives 🥹 that and the comparison to shows just in the last decade, I relate a lot to. A supernatural show that delivers on plot, characters, visuals and queerness non-stop feels like an utter gift and rarity. So I'm coping with the cancellation news well 🙃
