My story was the same with my Xbox 360 Elite console from 2007 with the 120GB HDD. It's laser lens malfunctioned in 2021 during COVID, but left it opened with the shells taken apart collecting dust since then and just didn't do anything about it for whatever reason. You see, I bought a replacement disc drive at that time thinking it would solve the problem, but didn't know that replacement drives will hardly work since they would need to be compatible with your specific console, because the replacement will pretty much only read audio and movie discs, but not game discs which is how you will know it's not compatible. So on the same day that I'm posting this comment, I decided to finally put it to rest and switch the bad lens out for the good one in the replacement drive to make some good use of the purchase from 3 years ago on Ebay. I followed your video to get it replaced, and by the end of the whole process, it worked! Thank you for this! You made it so easy! Just glad I didn't have to make another purchase, especially on a newer console!
Excellent how-to video! Thanks for posting this. With this video, I was able to get my original 2007 Xbox working again for the price of a 9-dollar laser.
my brother ryan still fixin 360 lasers 2 years on. hope nothing happens to these vids so the next generation has a resource to fix them again in a decade!
I'm so thankful that you and so many other people made videos for this. Watching multiple techniques helped a lot. The hardest part truly is getting the dang case open. It turned out 3 of the back tabs had snapped off making it near impossible to get the back open. After wresting with it for actual hours I finally got it almost there and then just gave it a hard yank and it separated. I hope I never have to open it again :D. Good news is, even with my lack of solder skills, it's not hard to just heat that ball off it pretty much just rolled into my trash can and then I kept applying more heat to make sure it was completely off the contacts and I was nervous after putting it back together (I tested before putting the case back on) but it worked!! Thanks so much!
Really great vid. I just fixed mine. My 6 yr old son has discovered Halo and has been begging me to play it. But we could not since my console was not reading discs. With your help I can introduce my sone to his first Halo experience! You rock!
This right here is the reason I make videos like this. I grew up with Halo and can’t wait to share it with my kids some day as well. Happy gaming to you both!!! 🎮
Had the same issue. The scraping noise is the Laser Lens hitting the Disc. What i did instead of changing the Laser was removing the Spin Motor (3 small screws) and put as a spacer some electric tape betwen the metal frame and the motor. Works now fine. I know better way is to change the laser, but it worked for now.
Very helpful. Bought new Laser assy from ebay & installed easily. One thing I did different: After removing solder blob on new Laser, I measured the resistance on the left pot. It was 3.5 k-ohms. I set it to 4.3 k-ohms (same as my orig factory setting). It read the disc on first try. Thanks!
Mine was the same 3.5kohms. I tried adjusting it higher around 7.1kohm. It still worked but I turned it back to around 6.5kohm, hoping it will last longer. I'm still curious how high it could go.
I actually heard you want to start at 3.2 ohms and go up just until it reads discs. Microsoft did this from factory to ensure they worked for consumers, not for the lifespan of the laser. I would love to know if you ran into any problems since your repair!
@@Analog_MomoHey there. How can you actually change those ohms? I have zero understanding on how to do that. My Xbox 360 laser stopped working today and I opened the Xbox 360, cleaned it from dust and tried to clean the laser after I watched some videos at TH-cam. Unfortunately it still doesn't read games, so I have to replace the laser and here I am wondering that ohm changing thing. 😅

Open your console and see what model number of dvd drive your console got with that. You can order a new dvd drive, a complete drive, not only the laser, I recommend this because the motors and laser wear out and, if you got the laser only and the motors are gone you only spent money on parts you don't need, with the complete dvd drive it is a quick and cold turkey fix.
Great Video! I was just able to fix our Xbox thanks to you! $7 for the laser and the disks are reading again. Thank you so much for posting this video.
On the vertical PCB where the ribbon cable connects are pots for adjusting the laser. You want to remove the solder bridge after you have re inserted the ribbon cable.
The screw should just run right back in if everything is lined up properly, I wonder if the hole on the new laser is too big and not letting the screw bite into anything.
If everything is lined up correctly, the only thing I can think of is a mis-sized hole on the new laser. Mine went in without issue, might be worth looking at the old and new side-by-side.
Hello, this video is excellent , I did everything in the video and everything I thought I could possibly do. The laser works fine now but it still does not read disc , any advice ? I thought it may be the sata cable because sata is used for data , I don't know what to do anymore I feel like giving up but strong will keeps me going.
Assuming the new laser is lighting up, you may need to double check the potentiometer settings and make sure they're in the correct operating range (I've heard it should be around 3.0-3.4k ohms but don't take my word for it, and do some research on the adjustment procedure and specs). A new laser may be out of range from the factory, or it may even be faulty. If the laser doesn't light up at all (don't look directly at it of course), check the solder ball on the side of the laser that they use for shipping purposes.
I have a question so I just installed a new laser in my Xbox and when I close it I see the laser move up and down but the red light doesn’t come on any suggestions
The first thing I can think of is to check the solder ball I referenced on the new laser. Make sure the solder is completely removed from all of the pads, and feel free to use a multimeter to check for any signs of continuity between any of the pads (I want to say there shouldn't be any). If that's free and clear (and the old laser used to light up no problem) double check that all connections are clean and tight.
Good question, there's about 3-4 different disc drives for the Xbox 360 and I believe the laser unit is a little different on each drive. I found this website that has a nice guide to determine which drive you should have before disassembly: hardandsoftgaming.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/replacing-a-faulty-xbox-360-dvd-drive-firmware-flash-or-circuit-board-transplant/ The replacement I got was a pretty basic unit off of eBay.
