Although I'm dark, I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and being dark and Yoruba was actually classier than being light. I think the reason is because it is culturally known that being Yoruba meant you were dark and the leadership and opportunities were centered around the Yoruba people. I did not know black/white racism until I came to the US. Unfortunately, for me, it still feels weird to feel judged for being darker, when growing up, I was highly regarded for being a dark Yoruba person. I still feel pretty good about my self, because every time I think of myself, I can only see myself from the point of view of when I was growing up with dignity,x respect and regard. Although I know many darker black Americans are looked down upon. I'm trying to come up with an online group that will incorporate Yoruba values that black people can utilize to help their self esteem. Cheers, A

I'm from Port Antonio, Jamaica and I'm a lesbian (stud) my dad has been vex with me for 15 years I'm 26 today, I've lived in Florida and now New York.. I feel free and happier. It's a beautiful feeling being accepted for who you are. It's been crazy but I'm just being who I am. It's easier that way. The violence towards the LGBT community in Jamaica is insane. They will try to beat the "gay" out of you. It's too much to handle. I've been spit at and beat by my own family in Jamaica just for not wanting to dress feminine. i never new what gay was til I came to america and saw two men is, my dad explained it to us (me and my brother) and said its something well see regularly as its common here...growing up in jamaica it wasnt uncommon to be see extremely feminine boys- playing house with cousins and dolls, mama lashy, red light and dandy shandy was common in almost every neighborhood. Then as you grow up, the male members start to branch out, some turning "galis - force ripe boy picney weh breed off the people dem gal picneys" or "mamma man- the boys who still attach to their mom or aunts, usually very feminine and always quick to argue"... I never knew that this was a thing, and even to this day thought it was a myth. But videos on youtube like this opens people eyes to the reality that yes, regardless of people's beliefs and culture, Gay people are everywhere in the world.

i never new what gay was til I came to america and saw two men is, my dad explained it to us (me and my brother) and said its something well see regularly as its common here...growing up in jamaica it wasnt uncommon to be see extremely feminine boys- playing house with cousins and dolls, mama lashy, red light and dandy shandy was common in almost every neighborhood.
