  • In this video, I do a quick review of the Airhawk seat cushion and ask the question: is the Airhawk worth it?
    I share my thoughts on how the Airhawk cushion performed during my recent road trip and whether or not I think it's worth purchasing.

    My Air Hawk rescued me. I ride a gold wing, arguably the most comfy bike out there. But due to a recent heart attack, and a 25 lb (doctor's orders) weight loss, I seem to have lost some of my "natural" padding. My bum just ain't happy on the bike, in the car, or at the restaurant. ENTER: THE AIR HAWK. I bought it on a hunch that it would help me some. What a difference. For me, it changes everything. Unlike the fella who posted this video, I don't need to fiddle with it. I can ride for months at the same setting. I do add a bit of air every 5k miles or so, but that's about it. And unlike this video, I don't strap it down. I just set it in place and ride. When I stop, I stick it under my arm and it saves me from a bad case of restaurant sore-butt as well. It even works well in the car: seats are too firm for my boney butt. Thank You Air Hawk.

    I’m definitely in the market for one. I’m riding up from Philly to Ottawa, Ontario soon, so I could use one for the day ride up. I’m glad the Airhawk site has a tutorial on how to measure your seat for the right kind of cushion.
    Thanks for the review, and overview.

    I saw some advice and followed it on a forum. It seems to work pretty good. You inflate the cushion and then you let the air out till you can just barely feel the seat of your motorcycle and that seems to work pretty good

    Nice overview of this. I have been shopping this one and the WildAss version. Price wise this one seems like a good place to start.

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be really nice if you have storage space - you can let the air out and it folds / rolls pretty small. I like that I can stick it in a backpack and use it when I need it.

    I bought a couple of Airhawks, and just never found them comfortable, no matter how little, or how much air I put in them. I think they're best for someone that doesn't need, or like a firm seat. I also grew tired of fiddling with the inflation trying to get them dialed in. I have been using a Pro Pad SuprCruzr Sheepskin gel cushion on my Harley Hammock seat for about 4 years, and I've been very happy with it. When i first got it, I just sat it on the Harley Hammock seat. A couple of long rides, I knew it was a keeper, and strapped it to my seat.

    Good one thanks ,have had one for five years , sportster,have found it priceless key I found you want to just feel seat through it with low pressure , it's a good fit on my original seat side wise , I have removed my skin off seat cut foam down put 2 layers of Yoga mat and a piece of 5o mm memory foam on top ,seat looking stock still but is a lot better , and about an inch thinner ,so airhawk on top brings it back to stock height, yes it looks bit sexier without it on ,but I'm not crippled at the end of the day ,so I couldn't care less LoL happy travels,,,,,

    I've thought about getting one but may just get a different seat. My concern is not wanting to sit higher, unfortunately a lot of aftermarket seats or seat mods tend to raise you a little. Thanks for the review! Gives me something to think about for sure.

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are right - any seat with more padding is going to put you higher on the bike. Even with this seat pad I can feel a difference as soon as I put my feet down at a traffic light. It isn't a huge difference but definitely noticeable.

    • @danman5857
      @danman5857 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you'd be much better off to go to various bike dealerships and ask around if they know anyone who can customize your existing seat. That person can view you on your bike, how you sit, your butt anatomy and pull back the seat cover, shave foam accordingly and add gel inserts and tada, your stock seat will be more comfortable and better for you.

  • @GoofyBastard
    @GoofyBastard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sounds like a good inexpensive way to make you seat better. I would think it would be a set it and forget kinda thing once you had it dialed in. Good review

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think in the case of our Lewes Ferry Ride, I had it overinflated and was chasing the comfort at each stop. Once I get it dialed in, I probably won't need to adjust it under normal circumstances.

  • @77TickTockTime
    @77TickTockTime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great review and mostly agree, old man comments aside haha. I had a slightly different experience where I adjusted the amount of air the first day and haven't had a need to further tinker with it. I think mine mentioned criss crossing the straps which helps prevent any sliding but the fabric started to tear a bit at one corner. I guess I'm getting old... but the donut helped me get home 1,100 miles in 18 hours without getting off the bike once! 🤪

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was concerned that it would move around under me but the non-slip surface and straps kept it in place all day long.
      The Airhawk goes a long way in helping with a sore butt - unfortunately I still get stiffness in my hips from being in one position for too long. I'd be in agony if I tried riding even half that distance without a break 😳

    • @77TickTockTime
      @77TickTockTime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WaltInPA Can't recall if you have frame sliders installed but it may be a nice addition so you can rest your legs on then and further shift around for longer rides. A crash cage and decent highway pegs make a world of difference but at a certain point you end up feeling like a different bike would be easier. Still surprised how narrow the mt09 seat looks but your new comfort seat does look nice and more scooped. 👍

    I can go for close to 2 and a half hours before my butt starts feeling sore. Then I'm hoping to get caught by a red light so I can stretch a bit!! 😂
    Kinda like you, I don't like ( extras ) on my bike, even if they help. No tank bags, Saddlebags or whatever. So I would use that seat when really needed, but take it off when I got home too!
    Good video Walt!!

    I wish motorbike companies made comfortable seats out of the factory. I now have a aftermarket seat on my GSX S !000. Better but not perfect. The Airhawk and many copies like are a gimmick based on zero real R&D. If air, as cushion, were a viable option, it would be used in all seats that require a prolonged use such as autos, busses, aircraft, even mattresses (hospital beds), easy chairs, and wait for it, horse saddles, etc... It is not for several very good reasons. One, it is unstable, especially on a motorcycle, were the body moves from side to side and front to back constantly. Basically, your seat is slipping and sliding at every nuance of the bike. Two, the air cells are too large. The only way to stabilize the platform is to reduce the cells drastically. By doing so, you lose all ability to control the pressure. If the Airhawk was the answer every cyclist, motorcycle rider, pilot and bus driver, etc... would have them. They don't!
