I used to go to the pulls in Trumansburg, NY each year. They usually had 7 or 8 teams, and there was one team driven by a little old man who treated his horses gently and calmly and quietly. He didn't win every year, but I guess he figured, "How are you going to bully a 1-2 thousand pound animal when you stand 5'5" and weigh 135 lbs.?" His horses weren't all hopped up, and once the team was hitched, they waited for his command to pull; they always gave him a solid effort. He did win sometimes, but sometimes he pulled his team out of the competition because he thought they had done their best weight. It was a joy to watch the teamwork going on there.
There was no whipping taking place 😂 you sound so desperate. The surface isn’t that good, they were slipping. There needs to be more moisture and clay content
What you saw was the difference between more expensive and less expensive horses good pulling horses that need not be slapped lightly with the reins are the big money horses. Horse pulling is no different than any other sport, winning just takes more money
The whipping is really stupid. Been around animals my whole life and only people who are not intelligent enough to understand and properly handle them resort to hitting them
I'm not sure. One thing I am sure of is that I am no animal trainer! Haha. But with things like this, I can understand the relationship between the human and the animal. If that whip was given to my little 1 year old granddaughter, she could hit me with it as hard as she could, and it would do no damage to me unless she poked me in the eye. That's the way I see this. That whip to those big horses...well, I don't think it's doing much damage.
I am a cattle puller and I use a stick not regains but the idea is that you give a command and then you get them to follow it by using the stick or whipping them so you can eventually not have to use the stick or whipping except for the hard parts or turning, backing up, etc.
The three most common verbal commands are, Gee (right) Haw(left) and whoa (stop). I've been around draft horses for the better part of 68 years there is no verbal command to pull harder. Oh yes the breed most pullers own is Belgian. Percheron's are not as popular due to their lighter bone structure
They listen. They're going to give their all at that Yelp no need to wip aint like your gonna get anymore "horsepower" thats like thinking putting a sticker on your vehicle adds horsepower . Beautiful animals they where well listen.... And did what they could
I understand that these draft horses were bred to pull loads. I also understand that horses need exercise to stay healthy. But there is no reason to use these majestic, powerful, and beautiful animals for maximum, limit-testing and/or sports. I bet nothing is tracked, reported, and scrutinized (prosecuted) if these draft horses injure themselves permanently, become lame, maimed, or God-forbid die. These competitions are pointless and primitive. I wish I could save every horse from this nonsense and bitch-slap all those that sponsor, sanction, and/or participate in these events.
They aren’t being forced to pull the weight for the whole length of the ring. These competitions are actually meant to show the strength of the breed showcased. Don’t criticize the sport, criticize the trainers for whipping the horse when it’s already trying it’s best
Just wondering how many among those critisizing are ready to put the time and the money to care for a team of draft horses and keep their breeds alive? For a few minutes of asking the horses their maximum effort, there are hundred of hours of care and a fortune behind them.
You might not care very much, but I HAVE put in the time and money that your talking about to care for SIX of these amazing creatures. The only difference is that I don't stop caring about them when I want to get work done. The whipping showed in this video is EXCESSIVE and ABUSIVE. You can ask a horse for it's best without all of that. Just train the horse!!! Plus, we all know that every part of the equine showing community is completely corrupt. So I wouldn't be so sure that those horses are getting the royal treatment behind the scenes.
Shows how bad the teamster are my grandfather would roll over in his grave to see wipping horses with rains . but that's how bad people are today !! Should be band for that acts ! No love for what good horses they have !! Just bullshit ! Pulling practices today
Thanks for sharing your opinion. If horses like these cease to have a purpose, then these large breeds will die out and no longer exist. It is events like this that keep these old bloodlines going. Just like heritage breeds of sheep, pigs, and cattle. If we don't raise them for meat and eat them, then the only breeds we will have are those fit for mass industrial farming. And that sucks, don't it?
@novicelumberjack - Yeah, that sucks. So what's your point? "I keep your bloodlines going so I can whip you?"???????????????????????????????? Kind of like the line from an old tv comedy (Sanford and Son maybe?) : Mother talking to her kid: "I brought you into this life - I can take you out of it!" From what I have seen over the years, the drivers who know their horses never have to whip them, and, damn! that's when the majesty of these noble beasts (and the skill and knowledge of the driver, too, btw) really shines through.
The horse with 1 eye is most likely from the abuse those people put the animal thru I know local guys who do the same stuff and beat their horses to train

I've seen hundreds of horse pulls.
Never seen Yahoo's pushing their horse and whipping like that.
When you're training or giving correction.
A lot of agricultural fairs across the country practice no touch pulling. However in Maine light use of the reins is permitted.
bombardierparts, Yeah me neither, that horse abuse !!!
@@richarddudley9920 you men abuse is allowed ????
I watch all sorts ofntheae pulls and I've never seen people whipping the horses until this one. Bad mojo
Especially 4:00. Turned it off after that
The whipping seems unnecessary. I saw quite a few horse break down after it started. Best to just let them do their jobs.

@JasmineKaneCircus I'm not sure what video you watched. Listen for the men hollering and see them whipping the horses.
@@JasmineKaneCircus
You definitely didn’t watch the same video. The majority of the horses were getting whipped with leather straps.
The horses not whipped went further then ones who were. Shows the trust between horses and handilers

@@richarddudley9920 NOPE it comes down to the size and strength and TRAINING of the horses, NOT ABUSING the horses !!
how stupid can anyone get.... wow
The whipping is really stupid. Been around animals my whole life and only people who are not intelligent enough to understand and properly handle them resort to hitting them
Theses are strong and smart horses and they are also gentle giants 😊
Where I'm from we used mules on the hills of Ky they were more sure footed on the steep hills
I love the breed. Isn’t there a way for them teach a verbal command without the whipping????

It also doesn’t hurt unless you’re hitting as hard as you can.

Whipping is PI$$ POOR horsemanship and ABUSE !!!! SIMPLE !!! Whipping a horse will not make him any stronger !!!!
whats hitting the horses with the rains gonna do?
A B U S E !!!!!!!
My uncle is actually Darrell Tibbetts these horses are strong as hell
It was an impressive show!
I work ar a company we go by kg im american but that weight is like pull over 6 pallets when a forklift can only push 2 thats crazy strength
Don't care if the one eye horse team pulled 100,000 lbs,, the whipping makes them a looser!
The animals not getting whipped or pushed did better than the once that weren't
Should be a disqualification for hitting them.
They listen. They're going to give their all at that Yelp no need to wip aint like your gonna get anymore "horsepower" thats like thinking putting a sticker on your vehicle adds horsepower . Beautiful animals they where well listen.... And did what they could
Get you a couple of these 2 help log some if those oaks out of those ravines. Put them 2 good use!

The whipping makes me mad. Their skin is thinner than ours.
Each horse is about 25 horse power.

They like hiting the horses so much with the pisk and horses the same like humans do
