That was some of the very very best horsemanship I have seen in years. Your quiet, firm and steady treatment of your team was wonderful to watch. Despite a wreck you kept calm outside and didn't worry your team. No slapping, or shouting, just asking them. I just loved it. My Dad worked horses and he would have enjoyed this very much!!!
My grandfather worked his team in the Train yard in the winter, he had the only team that could start box cars and move them alone, they had to use four horses most of the time. Gramps had big Belgian mares and they would hang in the harness and lean into it until it began to move. That team would do anything for him and he would never allow anyone else to work them.
1951 we were plowing a field with a JOHN Deere, my brother Harry was driving, I sat beside him with my arm behind Harry- suddenly BANG. Plow hit a rock the plow jumped up between my hands and hit the back of the seat. NO damage but it could have chopped my hand off. We never dug the rock out. Great words you have as commands they understand so well after 10 years. Cute that Brent keeps her ladies recognized from the boys. John
I spent my summers on a farm in Nebraska where we farmed with draft horses back in the late 50's & early 60's.. I have a lot of time driving a team. Great to see these teams doing this. I knew from the beginning they would not have a problem with pulling this stone. Didn't think about one not being as trained as the others. I'm 78 & my team driving was when I was 14 or 15. Still love to watch a team doing 'their thing'!
Yep, I grew up on a small farm in East Tennessee. My dad would take a team of mules into peoples gardens that were on steep hillsides ( no rototillers) to earn a little money . I’d tag along , I loved being around my dad and the teams. My dad would plough, disk , whatever needed doing. But working a team of mules is different than working horses.
Reminds me of my grandfather. He owned a dairy his entire working life and never owned a tractor. I remember him winning the pulling contest at the fair one year as he had the only team there was worked every day. Blacky and Bubb. Other teamsters were out there yelling and snapping crops etc to get their horses to pull hard. Grampie (as we called him)hooked up the horses to the sled and then went around in front of them. Kissed each on the nose and stepped a back about four feet in front of them. He started making kissing noises and those two tried so hard to get to him because they loved him so much they pulled the sled all the way to the end. It was one of those sleds that shifts the weight so it gets heavier to the horses as it pulls. Hands down winner for time and distance. Great memory. Jim seems to have that great gentle nature with the horses too.
There are still mule team logging outfits around. In the mountains out west, across Appalachia in the hills and hollers, Missouri, Arkansas, they're around. Mules can log out an entire woods without tearing up the land. Same goes after storms. Plenty of land owners prefer the mules to come in and drag out the downed timber to regular logging equipment. Mules can get places vehicles can't, and they don't rut up the land and destroy roads and topsoil the way log skidders, trucks, tractors, and other equipment does when the ground is soaking wet.
Jim, I applaud you for trying! You are always calm and think things through. I'm so glad they listen to you! They really are a beautiful team and your years of experience helped. I hope people remember how much horses helped before tractors!
I watched the piece you did on moving the huge bolder out of the field. I thought it was great!! I worked around heavy equipment. Huge dozers backhoes and tractors. But none of it impressed me as much as the four beautiful horses did on that job. I have to say I have always loved horses. The ones you have are magnificent!! God’s blessings Happy Easter Robert
I am continually impressed with how much your horses trust you and how hard they will concentrate and work for you even when they are in a bad situation. Very impressive!
As my dad used to say, The horses earned there oats today. They actually like to pull like that. You go to a horse pull and you see them just excited and get down low and just give it there all. Good job today Jim.
I hope everybody had extra treat given to each of them for doing an outstanding job teamed up different to what they are used to doing. Thank you for sharing a great moment for them. Look forward to watching another great time for them.
Great horsemanship!! The key, I think, is when the horses work WITH the driver, not just the driver working the horses. That to me, is what you show us all Jim, every video. Your care for the team and how you prepare them, take your time with them, consider what it is THEY NEED not just what you need from them. BRAVO
You are literally my favourite channel on TH-cam. I love this! I hope you don’t get negative comments about this video! If those horses were humans, they would be screaming and high fiving each other! They are all so proud of themselves! They love it!! Great job of keeping working with horses in this day and age! The skill is dying as we lose more and more of the old timers that lived this work all their lives!! Congratulations
Thanks for showing when things do not go just right, keep your videos real and honest. Your videos are having a really positive influence, thanks for putting yourself out there.
Horses love to show off their strength. This team is so well behaved, I'm amazed. Jim, you have an amazing team, and I'm very impressed with how willing they are.
Loved watching these horses struggle and adapt to a new experience and how you put the more experienced horses beside the less experienced. They adopted quite well and quickly after a bad start and were working beautifully together by the end. They are beautiful animals.
Again I must compliment you on your horsemanship, your easy way with your team and the confidence the horses show in you is what every teamster should strive for. Thanks for the video..
Horses should not be underestimated, if they have to pull they are very strong-willed and grow beyond their strength 💪💪🐴🐎 🤠 These horses are very well fed and cared for 👍👍
That was absolutely amazing to watch! The strength of those horses is incredible. I am amazed at how calm those horses are, but I think it's because Jim is so calm. Thank you Brenda, Jim, and the horses for sharing this with us:)
You are such an inspiration Gordon family...Papa Jim, you persisted and did very well, as usual and got the job done... Thanks for sharing your culture!
Two men that I seriously admire. @ Jim, I was going to leave a comment on the buying 2 colts video, that Mr Jason Rutledge would greatly approve of your choice of Suffolk Punch colts.
Whoa I remember seeing your beautiful Suffolks in "The Draft Horse Journal". Bet you're enjoying the eyeful of Jim and Brenda's colts. Wonderful to see such terrific horsemanship.
Yes you had me nervous too. My four Belgians sometimes get in similar predicaments but slow and easy usually get them through. Enjoy your videos and it helps me with my own horses. Was plowing today.
Great video! Besides the drama of moving the huge rock (that kept us all on the edge off our seats) I found three things very enjoyable in this video. First was the sound of the horses walking through the tall grass. What a beautiful sound. I also enjoyed listening to the horses breathing at the end of the pull. When do you get to experience the heavy breathing of gentle giants? And the third great thing I enjoyed was Jim riding the rock. When will you ever see that again. This video to me was “award quality!” I feel fortunate to have found your Chanel. Keep up the good work. You guys are a TH-cam gold mine
WHEW!!!! That made my stomach hurt a little when you and the horses started each time!! You have faith in them and they in you!! Brenda, bless her heart was great too!!
I am amazed at just how much those horses love to pull! I loved watching it. They wanted to start off and each one seemed to want to be the one pulling the hardest.
My Grandfather passed a little over 5 years ago. Some of my favorite memories of him are listening to stories of him doing farm chores with the horses!!! He had told me numerous stories, much like this video. He worked the horse sales into his 80’s!!! I wish he was still he to show you videos!! He would be your #1 fan!
wonderful video Jim this shows what the term Horse Power really means they are incredible powerful animals , I'm glad everything worked well in the end for you , God Bless you all .
Jim, opinions are like bellybuttons----everyone has one. I'm very happy that neither you nor the horses were injured in the mishap. You persevered and found a better solution wrt the horse arrangement and it was amazing to see all of that power put to the ground. Once on the grass, the stone boat pulled much easier and the horses truly looked magnificent. Brenda also did a fantastic job videoing the action as well as running to the barn and back to help you with the task as hand. Riding her bike and running the camera at the same time was really awesome. Thank you for sharing your life with us!
Excellent job! So many things can go wrong when working with horses. I do not know how you stay so calm Jim. Tugs break, horses can get one over another just a really good pull by all the horses. I love too go and watch horse pulls. Their have been bad recks with just two horses let alone 4. Those horse earned a couple of sugar cubes. Thanks for showing.
Don't be too harsh on yourself, you did the right thing, you stayed calm and took time to think about what to do next. Your videos are full of opportunities to learn for ourselves as well. :-)
It's funny I was waiting for you to show the big boulder I haven't seen a team of draft horses since I was a kid back in the early sixties I know a team of four can move that stone. Thank you for bringing back a lot of fun memories
Oh wow! My heart was in my throat the entire time. These horses are absolutely REMARKABLE! Such good boys and girl!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I bet you’re incredibly proud of your fabulous horses! They tried so hard and succeeded for you! I hope they enjoyed their well-deserved Sunday rest! I’m very happy and grateful that everyone is okay!
Your teams worked well together. When I was a kid my neighbors dad still farmer with a quad of mules. Loved to watch them work plowing and running a binder..
Spectacular accomplishment for the team, both horses and humans. The commentary really helps understand the challenges. Well done to each and everyone of you.
Absolutely incredible to watch those horses work that hard to move that stone. Great work making those adjustments and handling those magnificent beasts..
Yes you know what you are doing. Short pulls, rest then pull again. This keeps horses from a bad strain. Your team worked great, am glad horses and you were not hurt as that was a heck of a pull. I was watching your horses after the pull, and they seemed to be telling each other, see I told you we could do it.
Great to watch. They're only getting stirred up because they're keen to get on with it. They love to pull as much as a thoroughbred loves to test his speed, nothing wrong with that.
My dad who farmed with horses in the 40' and 50's would be very impressed and proud of you and your well trained team. Atta boy girl, Ken, Buck, Bill and Lady. And let's not forget Jim. Great Job team.
This video is SO interesting.! I love it. It says a lot about your relationship with your horses that they continued to trust you after the first unsuccessful try. And it says a lot about your horsemanship the way you did the pull in stages. Well done.
Wow I loved this cause I love horses. But you are so kind to your animals also. You're the kind of farmer that made this country so great. Thank you so much for sharing this experience...!!
That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Jim you really showed off your skills on that one. There was one shot from the front of the horses that was spectacular! Four big horses all hitched and ready to go. Beautiful!!
My goodness they worked hard today! I like how you started with the first hitch and decided that putting the Belgians inside was best. You are very perceptive to their strengths and I must say this is the first time I recollect you driving four in hand! Well done Jim and Brenda! PS...hope the ponies had a carrot or an extra measure of grain for the hard work! Edit...and for the grace of God! Well done and thanks again for another wonderful video.
BJ Brown Actually the hitch is called four abreast. 4 in hand is 2 pair with 1 pair in front of the other pair. Some people may call that a pair tandem. Didn't Jim look great up there looking like something out of "Ben Hur"??? Now in a few years when the "Duke of Earl Pair" get involved they can move that boulder out by the road and use that flat face for a bill board or whatever.
Brenda great camera work and running around opening the field for Jim. wow that's a boulder. i hope the horses had Sunday off with oats and apples. well done. Jim, i was afraid that you might get kicked being that the horses were nervous and all. take care
Great job, and as a Belgium woman, I'm really proud on the Belgian draft horses, they look great, have power , willing to work, love that team. Ofcourse the Percheron are doing wel too, and Jim, you handled that problem well, that was really a huge rock. Looking forward to see more video's !
Jim I was watching the video when you had the horses pulled out that big Boulder I must say it scared me at first but when I saw they moved it sign of relief darn good work Jim and extra good work horses God bless you and horses
From the UK excellent video from start to finish. Your patience and skill combined with the trust and strength of the horses, equals job done. Working horses are like working dogs continual motivation at what they do best pays off Have found your channel quite by chance will view all the videos and keep up to date as time goes on
I can be misremembering the details. However I seem to remember a couple of draft horses pulling a UPS truck out of a snow drift a year ago. It was lovely
I always felt that the true impeccability of a teamster is the amount of heart and trust a horse is willing to give. These horses are all heart. Thanks Jim, it’s times like this I miss my dad and being always in awe of the partnership he had with his team. By the way, the Clydes were our baby sitters in the barn while dad did chores lol. He’d sit us little kids up on top of the horses in their stalls, and he could see us from the milking row of cows. When we were old enough to learn to shimmy down , hanging off manes, he knew we were old enough to do some chores. Great life. Thanks Jim and Brenda.
When I was young, my family had a Belgian gelding. His name was Bill too! He wanted to pull, especially in the garden. Love watching horses do what they love and draft horses love to pull.
Hi Jim your horses are amazing, it just goes to show that they will do anything for you and always want to please, they deserve a few carrots and apples for that, well done Ken, Buck, Lady and Bill that looked hard but you all owned it, hugs from the UK xxxx
That was absolutely amazing Jim & Brenda! I'll be honest I had my doubts whether the horses would be able to move that boulder but I'm so happy that they proved me wrong. What an amazing feat!!!
It very much shows you know your horses and you've given them respect just in the way they trust you thank you for sharing your knowledge and showing us the greatness of Horse power may God look over and protect you all
Wow, the absolute power of those horses is awesome. I LOVE watching a good team pull weight. The horses are beautiful, Jim. People who don't know any better would be blown away by how much a horse can pull and how much they love to have a job to do. They're amazing animals.
Job well done Jim & Brenda! You are horseman's, the thought and care that you showed in this feat was great. Thanks for sharing and God Bless you and the horses.
Jim, I have just watched this video again. Man and beast working in harmony. You must put pen to paper and share your knowledge of draft horses, logging and horse drawn farm machinery. You have an easy way with expressing your thoughts, and your knowledge is unique and important.
That was beautiful to watch, but understandably nervous for you, and the horses. Once you got through that initial train wreck, they pulled very good. That was a great visual, with the blacks on the outside and the Belgians in the middle. The switcheroo seemed to work. Nice job!!
Well done. I continue to appreciate your concern for the safety of yourself and your teams and those around you during activities. Your horses are truly magnificent and a joy to behold. Sending good thoughts and prayers to you and your teammates for continued good health. Live long and prosper.
Excellent job Jim! That is an amazing task for those horses. Really highlights your experience and your teams conditioning. Wow! Thank you for sharing with us.

Oh Fiona believe me those horses are no different then hacks.they know BEFORE the man does.bless them.
I bet that was AMAZING to see!
Think about how long ago that rock was dropped off by a glacier. Pretty cool.
Horses are just the best workers ever.

I love mules😊
Wow!! This was amazing to watch! I have never seen 4 horses pulling together. They REALLY pulled!

There are still mule team logging outfits around. In the mountains out west, across Appalachia in the hills and hollers, Missouri, Arkansas, they're around. Thanks! Yes horses have been the helpers of man for ages!
I worked with a pair of Belgum's in the woods when I was a young man and really miss it at times, nothing like a good team pulling together.
Beautiful to see the power and discipline of those horses.
I watched the piece you did on moving the huge bolder out of the field. I thought it was great!!

Awesome videos. My family farmed and logged with draft horses up until the 1950s. It gives me visuals for the stories my uncles told. Thanks
Thanks for watching
Absolutely incredible to watch those horses work that hard to move that stone. Great work making those adjustments and handling those magnificent beasts..
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice work, you did a nice job of hooking and moving them to get them working together! Glad you got it done and great video!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Great work Jim. Your babies worked very hard for you and all your previous training pays off in the end.
Yes, the horses seemed to be proud of themselves
Wow! That was intense. Thanks so much for taking the time to share this. What an exciting video!
Great to watch. They're only getting stirred up because they're keen to get on with it. They love to pull as much as a thoroughbred loves to test his speed, nothing wrong with that.
Hello Caroline,, how're yoi doing today
Fascinating, figuring it out, seeing you make those adjustments while worrying about your horses...good job!
Thank you!
Well done.
Thank you so much!
Wow unbelievable what four horse can do. I was sitting on the edge of my seat. That awesome seeing that. Thank for sharing that.
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow I loved this cause I love horses. But you are so kind to your animals also. You're the kind of farmer that made this country so great. Thank you so much for sharing this experience...!!
Thank you!
That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Jim you really showed off your skills on that one. There was one shot from the front of the horses that was spectacular! Four big horses all hitched and ready to go. Beautiful!!
Amazing, no other word seems to describe what you and those beautiful horses did. And just think, 4 horsepower did the job. God Bless,
Thank you very much, God bless!
Amazing brought back memories when I was a boy, watching my grandfather, and father ploughing , that's all that's left just memories thank you fondly.
Absolutely amazing teamwork of you all ! And the respect shown between Jim, Brenda, and the horses for each other and all. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Hannah!
Great job Jim and horses!!! They trusted you and you had confidence in them. Love to watch you work with your horses. You'll are great!
Thanks for your confidence! And thanks for watching!
Yes! Thank you! They got a day off and were well fed! And yes, we certainly thank God for his safety and protection
@@alb5489 Ah yes, you are correct! I was just so amazed at Jim’s talent that I lost my mind, and thank you for the correction. Cheers!
Brenda great camera work and running around opening the field for Jim. wow that's a boulder. i hope the horses had Sunday off with oats and apples. well done. Jim, i was afraid that you might get kicked being that the horses were nervous and all. take care
Thanks, William! Yes, they had a nice day off!
I have real respect for your ability to handle that team of four. 😀🇬🇧
Great job, and as a Belgium woman, I'm really proud on the Belgian draft horses, they look great, have power , willing to work, love that team. Ofcourse the Percheron are doing wel too, and Jim, you handled that problem well, that was really a huge rock. Looking forward to see more video's !
Kathy Ark Great work and perfect patience from you Jim, nice seeing how each draft pulls
Awesome. Beautiful to see the good old days. My husband estimate that rock to be in the range of 7-8000 lbs
Another great video. I had forgotten the nervous excitement of the horses during a pull. You and your horses definitely know leach other.
I can only imagine the power you feel thru the reins. Real skill on your part. Love the horses
Jim I was watching the video when you had the horses pulled out that big Boulder I must say it scared me at first but when I saw they moved it sign of relief darn good work Jim and extra good work horses God bless you and horses
Thanks Ronnie, God bless you and yours as well
Animals abuse
From the UK excellent video from start to finish. Your patience and skill combined with the trust and strength of the horses, equals job done. Working horses are like working dogs continual motivation at what they do best pays off
Have found your channel quite by chance will view all the videos and keep up to date as time goes on
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely love seeing them work! Excellent job switching them up the way you did 👍👍👍
I can be misremembering the details.
Thanks for sharing the memories!
When I was young, my family had a Belgian gelding. His name was Bill too! He wanted to pull, especially in the garden. Love watching horses do what they love and draft horses love to pull.
That is when you need that extra pair of hands... good job, excellent teams... that Lady is an amazing horse....
Agree. She's a corker.
@@alliechampagne1404 LOL, omg I have not heard that expression in years... thanks for that....
@@donelookin3386 Lol, yup. It's a commonly used word over where I'm from.
SO TRUE. SO REAL. SO HONEST !!! A GOOD MAINER FROM ANOTHER MAINER !!! GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY. TY JOHN
Thanks John, and God bless yours!
Your horses certainly had a sense of mission and wanted to get the job done.
Yes, they gave it their all
That was so amazing! They really did seem to want to do this job for you Jim! Love this channel, I've learned a lot! God bless
You could see the look of satisfaction on their face. Pure horsepower at it's finest 👌
Magnificent animals. Glad no one was injured in your mishap.
Hi Jim your horses are amazing, it just goes to show that they will do anything for you and always want to please, they deserve a few carrots and apples for that, well done Ken, Buck, Lady and Bill that looked hard but you all owned it, hugs from the UK xxxx
Hi Shelley, thanks for watching. They do deserve that!
That was absolutely amazing Jim & Brenda! I'll be honest I had my doubts whether the horses would be able to move that boulder but I'm so happy that they proved me wrong. What an amazing feat!!!
Yes, we were very happy they could pull it out!
It very much shows you know your horses and you've given them respect just in the way they trust you thank you for sharing your knowledge and showing us the greatness of Horse power may God look over and protect you all
Beautiful horsemanship, problem solving, and exhibition of draft horse strength, and usefulness.
Wow, the absolute power of those horses is awesome. I LOVE watching a good team pull weight. The horses are beautiful, Jim. People who don't know any better would be blown away by how much a horse can pull and how much they love to have a job to do. They're amazing animals.
Yes, they are amazing animals
Nice work, I grew up around working horses, we had a neighbor who had some beautiful draft horses, he would always pull a hayride at the county fair.
Job well done Jim & Brenda! You are horseman's, the thought and care that you showed in this feat was great. Thanks for sharing and God Bless you and the horses.
Thanks, and God bless you as well
What a beautiful sight! My impression is that it is very rewarding to work with these animals.
Jim, I have just watched this video again. Man and beast working in harmony. You must put pen to paper and share your knowledge of draft horses, logging and horse drawn farm machinery. You have an easy way with expressing your thoughts, and your knowledge is unique and important.
I agree!!!
That was beautiful to watch, but understandably nervous for you, and the horses. Once you got through that initial train wreck, they pulled very good. That was a great visual, with the blacks on the outside and the Belgians in the middle. The switcheroo seemed to work. Nice job!!
Yes, it went well with the switch up
That was amazing. Good to see how well they all worked together after that initial pull. Your skill InWorking with horses is terrific.
Thanks 👍
Thanks 👍 and thanks for watching
Wow! This wins the gold medal of Olympic pulling. Impressive work and a joy to watch. Thanks! Cheers from Ontario.
