    You should have used a thick plastic liner for the tall planter and put drainage holes in the bottom, the one you used will rot and the soil will fall through. The plastic will also stop the wood from rotting. The smaller planter will only be good for anything with shallow roots, will make a nice herb garden.

      @vivienne7271 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. You will be lucky to get a season out of that membrane. I would take that membrane out and the plastic as suggested before you plant anything. The composte bags would be fine for this. Yes ok it would be a bit more work now but in the long run it will save you time and money. Your plants will be better your planter will last longer and you won't have a big messy job next season and a big disappointment when if all sinks through the bottom then rots the base boards.

    Question is there enough space for guest to sit at the table and sit on the sectional at the same time? It looks tight in the video. The planter boxes look great. I think you should plant kale, lettuce, spinach in the big box and herbs in the smaller one. Good job.

    Super vlog. Gives me great idea. Thank you. Yes lavender likes gritty soil. I was recommended to use Hidcote lavender . Trellis great idea. Be careful nobody trips over the shallow though. Garden looks amazing.

    Herbs would be great in the lower planter especially scented ones! Honey suckle or jasmine with box plants in the top one adding a trellis for them too 😄

    Your small planter has a much better depth, as the plant roots can grow right into the soil. The taller planter actually has a shallower soil depth.......as I see it, anyway. Some plants have shallower root systems, so I would plant those into the taller raised bed. But what a wonderful job you guys are doing with your home - very impressive!

  • @fegrace_1

    Just incase the soil erodes or shifts consider doing Hugelkultur gardening in your tall raised bed. Technically you could still remove the top soil since it is on a tarp, do the the branches and sticks, get the the free soil from your council (you posted this in a previous video), add warms, then put the the top spoil back in the planter before planting your vegetables etc.

    • @ShadeShannon
      @ShadeShannon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh I was so going to do this as well but I backed out I don’t even know why ..grr. If I have the energy, before I plant, I may remove it all and do that. Thank you for the suggestion!

    The membrane you have used is far too thin and when the compost is wet it will break through the material. If you line the wooden planter then you need to do it with plastic to keep the damp soil away from the wood to help prolong the it, punch drainage hole in plastic.
    Planting ...
    - carrots/most long rooted vegetables normally need a good depth of stone free loose open soil otherwise there is a danger that the roots will split. The good news is that you can get seeds of short stubby or round carrots
    Root veg don't like being transplanted so sown in situe
    - Salad crops, Radish and Beetroot are all fairly shallow rooted and quick growing. By planting eg half a row of radish and beetroot and sowing this every 2 to 3 weeks you don't get a glut. Beetroot leaves can be picked young (a couple of each plant in the row) then as the beet developes left to feed the root, 2 for the price of 1. Pick lettuce leaves in a similar manner rather than taking the whole head, you will get several picking before harvesting the head.
    - strawberries a great choice and will look great dangling over the edge of the planter
    - plante some edible flowers eg violas look pretty in salads,ice cubes or decorating cakes and nasturtium flowers and petals both trail over the edge of the planters and have a peppery taste to liven a salad, pick before they get black fly or wash well
    - herbs would look good in large hanging pots hooked over the edge of the tall planter and can be replaced as needed eg Basil, Parsley, Tarragon and other leafy herbs. Rosemary/Lavendar are bigger plants and are better in the ground
    - attach some trellis at each end of the large trough (on the lawn side to ground level to grow beans in the ground). At the wall end some drawf beans/sugar snap peas which don't grow so tall. If you don't like beans try sweet peas on the lawnside taller trellis BUT never mix peas/beans with sweetpeas as sweet pea seeds are poisonous but the pods look similar.
    - if you like aniseed then fennel I like the bronze version the colour adds variety. Use the feathery leaves, enjoy the yellow flowers and later collect the seeds for eg fennel tea good for the digestion.
    There are many more things to grow but do your research look, at square foot gardening for growing in small spaces and cropping while plants are small but plant continuously you don't have to plant in foot sized beds but do it intensively
    It's all looking great and can't wait to see how your garden progresses, keep planting 👍
