sdfadsff dsfsdfdsf they deserve an nhl team and a basketball team because unlike everywhere else in the country, seattle actually supports their local teams. the hawks won like 4 games 5-6 years ago and they were still sold out almost every game. the sounders are hit/miss and seattle sells their tickets out most games. same for baseball. unlike california. and other states, we actually support our teams. everywhere else if their team starts losing, you see all the fake fans not show up. it says a lot about ones city and how terrible their fan bases are.
sdfadsff dsfsdfdsf go look if up lmao. the seattle sounders since coming into the leauge as an expansion team has had more people come than any other soccer team approximately 55-60% more ticket sales than the la galaxy with more than half the people of la..
The last ditch effort to try to buy the team came courtesy of Steve Ballmer who was willing to kicking in some renovation money to Key Arena, but Clay Bennet refused to sell.
Don't give Baltimore one, until they replace the Royal Farms Outhouse. Give Louisville a team instead, they broke the NBA Preseason attendance mark of 23,000 at the KFC Yum Center. Resurrect the Sonics and the Kentucky Colonels!
rockvilleraven yes give Baltimore an NBA we know rofo arena needs to be replaced and the city wants to replace that arena but the problem is we need a tenet to put in there full time
Minneapolis Lakers were winners back then winning 5 titles already so we will never know if Minneapolis would have won the rest 11 titles too, but most probably.
Ya but after greats like George Mikan retired, the Mpls Lakers were in financial trouble. Lakers got no love from St. Paul which is why all teams after were called Minnesota.
Teams shouldn't move at all unless fans aren't showing up. Leaving for a new stadium, or lack thereof, shows fans that leagues don't care anything about them.
Tell that especially to the real NFL boss aka Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones. He' is the real mastermind of the recent NFL moves i.e Rams, Chargers, and Raiders IMO. Jones has been screaming the most for a team in LA for at least 10 years now. Of this list of the 21st Century relocations, only the Expos move to DC, the Trashers gone from Atlanta and the Grizzlies to Memphis was somewhat justified.
Cobra Frimpong At least the Oilers changed their name to the Titans. The Lakers couldn't even be bothered to do THAT when they moved from Minneapolis. And how many Jazz clubs are in Utah again?
The North Stars relocation to Dallas was great, in my opinion. Sure, Minnesota is known to love hockey but in the early 90's the attendance was struggling so they relocated to Dallas and they won the cup in 1999. Soon they became a powerhouse with Seguin and Benn with the help of Modano of course. So hockey will stay in Dallas for a while
Might add a correction: The Brooklyn Dodgers were in Brooklyn beginning in 1890, not 1932 as stated. (The franchise was there, but the actual nickname "Dodgers" came later.)
The Thrasher move hurt the NHL Atlanta dominated Winnipeg in ticket sales and actually did it to the point where Winnipeg inflated it to make it look close. Atlanta had a market just never the team and their owners were complete shit. When they made the playoffs they outsold the Hawks Falcons and braves that year. They actually consistently outsold the Hawks. They just weren't given the time and overall hurt the NHL.
Interesting thing about Seattle to OKC. Back when Boeing was working on its supersonic airliner, they flew fighter jets over Oklahoma City to test the effects of sonic booms on cities. It wasn’t received well.
I think this is a bad list; just because a city eventually gets another team, doesn't make a move good. Here's some good moves you forgot; St. Louis Browns to Baltimore, Dallas Texans to Kansas City, and Boston Braves to Milwaukee
as a sonics fan I feel can't help but mention that they had KD before they moved and the notion that the governmnent should have to pay sports arenas is absurd. They never had problems with the fanbase and if it weren't for cheap owners there would never have been any reason to move.
@TPS. Some replies to this video clip of relocated sports clubs in no order. In many of these situations that these mentioned clubs that moved, it was a carpetbagger owners and sports league leaders that took the quick buck and relocated instead of just awarding these new cities expansion teams. And trying to get new modern mostly taxpayer stadiums to replace the aging ones that made them move in the first. 1)Dodgers and Giants-No doubt LA and the west coast by 1955 deserved a MLB Club. With that said and as someone who was raised in Brooklyn, the MLB owners should have just had given new expansion clubs to both LA and SF by 1960 IMO. Meanwhile the then NY baseball Giants could moved to the Shea Stadium (currently "Citifield")site in Queens. While the Dodgers could have built an Astrodome type stadium at the site of current home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets in Downtown Brooklyn. By now in 2017 if the Giants and Dodgers stayed in NYC area, one of them would probably be IMO at a location in either Long Island or Northern New Jersey. Unlike NHL I think MLB could have 3 teams in the NYC area to this day. So i agree the Dodgers and NY Giants was a brilliant move, MLB could have handled the relocation/expanding to the American West Coast better IMO, 2)Why is the Lakers from Minnesota to LA not on this list? Or say the St Louis Browns to Baltimore to become the Orioles? 3)Atlanta Trashers to Winnipeg Jets no doubt belong on this list/countdown. And now with the recent success of the Nashville Predators I doubt if ever Atlanta will ever get a NHL team. Nashville got the entire Southeast (not counting Florida)US covered now. PS You could have mentioned how Atlanta first NHL team in the '70's flopped and moved to Calgary by 1980. Not to mention when media mogul Ted Turner sold this club (along with the Braves and Hawks)that was the end of the Trashers. 4)While San Diego was did not have good attendance, they only had a NBA team for a short while being after the move from Buffalo being fair. With that said, I still think the Clippers should be in Anaheim/Orange County (which is big enough to have its own NBA team)to attract fans in Orange and parts of San Diego County. Even with now regular playoff berths, the Lakers are still arguably the most popular pro sports team in Southern Calif. 5)The Colts should have never left Baltimore. Indianapolis should have just gotten an expansion club. The later success of the Ravens proves that the Colts just needed a new stadium by 1985 and that Baltimore is one of the NFL most loyal cities. 6)I think Montreal deserves the next expansion MLB club. However I agree this is one of the handful of clubs on this list that needed to move. Montreal Expos had crappy ownership and a crappy converted Olympic stadium not suited for baseball. Granted the club was devasted by the strikes of both 1981 and 1994 when a world series berth might have got them a new stadium. Montreal needs 1)a retractable roof preferably around 35,000 seats max in a neighborhood that would love baseball. 2)Deep pocket Owner(s) to maintain a new MLB club for good. 7)Oklahoma City after being the temporary home of the New Orleans Pelicans after Hurricane Katrina deserved a permanent club of their own. However taking away the Sonics was not the answer. The NBA is rich enough where almost any of the owners could build a new arena with little or no taxpayer monies. Still hopefully by the latest 2020, Seattle will get one of the next expansion NBA clubs. Replies by TPS or anyone else here?
Remember the SF Giants moved to California from NYC at the same time as the Dodgers. Their rivalry began back east. As a baseball fan, I can add a few more: Original Washington Senators to Minnesota, Kansas City Athletics to Oakland, and Boston Braves to Milwaukee. Oh, and the Browns to Baltimore. What? You say you already have that one on your list? No, I'm talking about the St. Louis Browns, who became the Baltimore Orioles. Also, in football, the Houston Oilers to Tennessee. And in hockey, Minnesota North Stars to Dallas and whatever team moved to NJ and became the Devils. (Cleveland Barons? California Golden Seals? Denver Rockies? Kansas City Scouts?)
Exactly. Dodgers and Giants moving west capped MLB’s tumultuous 50’s. The Braves left Boston for Milwaukee, the A’s left Philly for KC and the Browns left the STL for B’More. If the Dodgers get their domed stadium in Brooklyn or Queens, the Giants move to Mpls and the landscape of the MLB is radically different.
The funny thing about the Cleveland to Baltimore move was that the NFL decided to treat the Ravens like an expansion team, and give the new Browns team all the history. Fast foward to today and the Ravens have 2 SB titles under their belt, and the Browns have a history as if they never moved.
currently of the "5" ( if we include MLS ) major sports, Los angeles and NYC metro area are only areas to have at least 2 teams in every sports ( 10 for Los Angeles, 11 for NY city ) Lakers/Clippers NBA; Kings/Duck NHL; Dodgers/Angels MLB, Rams/Chargers NFL and Galaxy/FC MLS for Los Angeles Knicks/Nets NBA; Yanks/Mets MLB; Jets/Giants NFL; Red Bulls/NYC FC MLS and Rangers/Islanders/Devils NHL there are many who have at least 1 in all 5
At first the A's move to Oakland worked out great! They were terrible when they moved to Kansas City, but only a few years after they moved to Oakland they won the World Series 3 years in a row and about 16 years later they went to another 3 straight World Series' but only won 1 of those in 1989 by sweeping the Giants.
The thing with southern NHL is that it teaches the game to the fans, and has a chance of helping the sport grow to the USA. It's risky but it can work with good management.
American sporting culture is so different from the rest of the world. Sports teams are often tied to the community in other countries and relocations are rare. In England, there was fury when Wimbledon FC to Milton Keynes and the MK Dons became the most hated team in England because people saw it the town buying a place in the football league instead of building up a team from the lower leagues. Within England, if some teams go bankrupt some fans set up a phoenix club and some Man Utd fan hated the Grazers so much that they made their own protest club. The same thing happened in Austria when Red Bull rebranded SV Austria Salzberg as Red Bull Salzburg. In Germany, there is the 50+1 rule to ensure most clubs are fan-owned and prevent the superrich from buying German clubs. Whilst in Spain many fans can vote for the president of a football club.
Quite a bold take calling the Sonics move one of the best relocations ever. I'm sure there are hypothetically people in and near Oklahoma who like the Thunder, but this is literally the first I've ever heard anyone mention that move fondly (and there have been many, many times when the conversation isn't even about relocation, just maybe involves the Thunder, and someone airs their grievances about the Sonics getting shafted).
There was talk that baseball would be brought back to Montreal. I hope they do. The only reason why the attendance sucked in the 2000's is because we sucked compared to the 90's. Which drops attendance for any sports franchise.
I think the people of Cleveland would differ on #3. We'd still would've liked the old Browns to stay in Cleveland instead of getting an expansion team. There's no doubt that the Super Bow win in 2001 would have been in Cleveland.
Did he say Atlanta Thrashers had 5 fans per game? If so, that would be bizarre to play games in an empty rink. Hell, I would go just to experience that.
Montreal got fucked over by MLB. In 1994 they had the best record in baseball and people were talking about a possible all Canada World Series. They were on pace to set a new attendance record. Then came the strike and the season was over. When baseball came back in 95, the great players were gone. Then the Expos sucked and the fans didn't come back.
This video makes it sound as if the Cleveland Browns were a bad team before they moved to Baltimore. Actually they probably would have won multiple Super Bowls had they stuck around in Cleveland. I mean look what the players did in Baltimore. And oh, by the way, their coach was Bill Belichick. Also, the Giants moved from NY to California like the Dodgers, so they were always nearby teams. That's why Chris Berman sometimes refers to the NFL team as the New York Football Giants, a reference to an archaic distinction.
The Thrashers attendance wasn't always terrible, but other than the Braves, Atlanta fans are fair-weather fans. The Thrashers had a couple bad seasons and attendance dropped. The Coyotes should have been moved back instead.
What about the Dallas Texans to Kansas City Chiefs? Sure it was an AFL team move on the 60's, but still. They did amazing things with their move, separating themselves from the Dallas Cowboys back then.
Why should Seattle fund $200,000.000.00 for a new stadium when the Key Arena was 10 years old, and two years earlier david stern had called it, "state of the art"? The Sonics should never have been taken away.
I feel like the MLS dosent get any reconition, one of the best was the San Jose Earthquakes to Houston, becoming the Houston Dynamo, winning 2 staright MLS Cups in there first 2 years, and being a western conference power-house from 2006-2013. Now things have dried up but still.
Wait a second. The criteria here is that just because a relocation ended up successful for the team (on relative scales, of course) that somehow that made them better for the leagues?
Wow, did you guys try? Jim Harbaugh took the Colts to the AFC Championship game and was one play away from the Super Bowl. But "the Colts were no good until Peyton Manning". Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, AND James Harden for the Thunder, thank you. The Kansas City Chiefs moved from Dallas where they were called the Dallas Texans. . . It worked out in Arrowhead Stadium. The Chicago/St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals. Team popularity has never been higher. They have a great venue and nobody makes fun of the Bidwell family anymore. The Oilers to Tennessee and the Texans new for Houston. The Dallas Stars used to be the Minnesota North Stars. The Stars would win the Stanley Cup shortly after the move and be competitive for quite some time. Minnesota would get some hockey team, but nobody really cares because they suck in a state that loves its hockey.

Then came the strike and the season was over. When baseball came back in 95, the great players were gone. Then the Expos sucked and the fans didn't come back.
Do top ten cities who will never get a sports team
This video makes it sound as if the Cleveland Browns were a bad team before they moved to Baltimore. Actually they probably would have won multiple Super Bowls had they stuck around in Cleveland. I mean look what the players did in Baltimore. And oh, by the way, their coach was Bill Belichick.
Also, the Giants moved from NY to California like the Dodgers, so they were always nearby teams. That's why Chris Berman sometimes refers to the NFL team as the New York Football Giants, a reference to an archaic distinction.
Seattle to OKC was all about a team's owner refusing to build a new stadium. I actually credit Seattle for letting the team walk away .
This video is really great but the sonics did fine in the 21st century. Compared to any other of the teams on this list they where amazing.
Why should Seattle fund $200,000.000.00 for a new stadium when the Key Arena was 10 years old, and two years earlier david stern had called it, "state of the art"?
The Sonics should never have been taken away.
To be fair to Montreal, they had great attendance records until the late 90s when their owner started sabotaging it

10 Best Cornerbacks in the NFL
I feel like the MLS dosent get any reconition, one of the best was the San Jose Earthquakes to Houston, becoming the Houston Dynamo, winning 2 staright MLS Cups in there first 2 years, and being a western conference power-house from 2006-2013. Now things have dried up but still.
In 20 years from now the NFL will be number 2 and MLS will be number 1.
@@Embargoman yeah totally, and in 20 years im gonna be one of the Avengers and Putin and Trump are getting married! Yeah, totally
What about the Colorado Rockies moving to New Jersey to become the Devils? That worked out very well for the organization.

NFL teams that need to relocate
Wait a second. The criteria here is that just because a relocation ended up successful for the team (on relative scales, of course) that somehow that made them better for the leagues?
Giants to San Francisco should be on that list.
It seems like Seattle needs a NBA team though. The city is different now, and I think the fans would be more supportive.
I was surprised that Minnesota lakers to LA lakers wasn't on there
Wow, did you guys try?
