@@Roddy425 oh, you mean a Private Citizen bought a Privately Owned NBA franchise, and moved what rightfully and legally belongs to him to a city of his choice? Especially since HE bought the team with HIS OWN MONEY?! Seattle never legally owned the Sonics, so the only theft that happened here was in the imagination of Seattle fans. The only the city of Seattle did legally own was Key Arena, which the Sonics refused to play in because it was a dump. Arenas older than Madison Square Garden need to be demolished anyway.
Since Clay Bennett bought the Sonics, he had no intention of keeping them in Seattle. He sabotaged the franchise in the teams last couple of years in Seattle by trading away their best players and signing mediocre ones and hiring a terrible coach.
If fans don’t stick with a team when they relocate. They ain’t fans. And the chargers are 10-3 as I type. That’s one game behind the 11-2 rams in wins. Come on man don’t be a hater because the Seahawks aren’t doin shit this year
Brian Hill If you’re not from that city then I agree with you. If you are from there then I’m sorry if you leave my home then I want nothing to do with you. I guess LA is the exception but the Rams did a good job of kissing and making up.
What about the Oakland Athletics? They were in Kansas City from ‘55-‘67 and finished in last place every year. Then moved to Oakland in 68 and had a dynasty. Winning 3 straight World Series ‘72-‘74, five straight divisions ‘70-‘75. With Hall if Famers Reggie Jackson, Jim Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, and Dick Williams. Then in the late ‘80s go to 3 more consecutive World Series ‘88-‘90 winning the ‘89 World Series with hall of famers like Dennis Eckersley, Rickey Henderson, and Tony LaRussa. Plus playoff appearances in ‘00, ‘01, ‘02, ‘03, ‘06, ‘12, ‘13, ‘14, & ‘18.
Fun fact: the A's we're originally based in Philly. If they make a list of teams that got WORSE after relocating, the Athletics' move from Philly to KC should be on that list. Bonus fun fact: the A's are one of only three teams to have been based in three different cities over their franchise history. The other two are the Baltimore Orioles (who were originally the Milwaukee Brewers, then moved to St. Louis after just one season and became the St. Louis Browns) and the Braves (who were originally based in Boston, then moved to Milwaukee before finally moving to their current home of Atlanta).
Until proven otherwise, the Washington Nationals are a head case. Nothing more, nothing less and have been since game five of the NLDS when their closer barfed up a lead. Haven't won a playoff series.
What about the Calgary Flames? They should have been considered for this list. This team originally the Calgary Flames from 72-80'. Even though they did have some decent winning success in Atlanta, they were never a good draw in the deep south, didn't have a good television contract and struggled financially before the team was sold and moved to Calgary. Once the Flames moved to Calgary, they won 1 Stanley Cup in 1989, three conference championships and 2 President's Trophies.
Both the St. Louis (95) and LA (16) relocations of the Rams saw quick success. The Thrashers move to Winnipeg has made the Jets a Cup contender, as did the Whalers move to Carolina made the Hurricanes Cup champs. Could also see the North Stars move to Dallas and the Raiders move to LA be on the list.
Now I understand why so many basketball team names make no sense, its because for some reason, they rarely change the name after relocation. Like, Come on, Utah Jazz? Los Angeles Lakers? Memphis Grizzlies? Now it all makes sense.
How Come The Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets Aren't On The List? They Only Made The Playoffs Once In Their Years In Atlanta, And Haven't Won A Single Playoff Game In Atlanta Either.
The Flames definitely fared better leaving Atlanta. Of course the Thrashers-turned-Jets fared better leaving Atlanta too. If for nothing else, they financially went to a better hockey market. The NHL really should give up the idea that Atlanta is not a hockey market.
@John Wayne that may be true, but when the fans organized a protest against relocation, only about 90 people showed up... So there's that. Atlanta is a football/basketball city. Unless an NHL franchise establishes an instant dynasty in the city, I feel that hockey fans in Atlanta are very fickle.
As a wild fan, hate to admit it but Dallas Stars should have been here. After they left MN they won the Stanley Cup in 1999. Dang I wish the Wild weren’t awful...
Hartford Whalers to Carolina Hurricanes should have been at least top 10. Two Stanley Cup appearances and one Cup victory as well as a third Eastern Finals appearance are leaps and bounds better than anything the Hartford teams did. Although it is probably time to relocate the Canes [I can say this as I am a Canes fan :(....]
Let's move them back to Hartford. You fans in Carolina are great, but if you knew how we got screwed out of them, you'll know why our booster club is still around. Yes, we still have an active NHL booster club. Hartford fans are passionate about their teams. I just hope that your new owners will realize that Pete Karmoronos (the most hated sport team owner in history) got a sweet deal from Connecticut's moronic governor at the time. We are still hoping to see NHL hockey in Hartford. Go Whalers!!
Kid you right. The Lakers moved from the Twin Cities to LA a year or so after the Dodgers arrived in Southern Calif. Not only should the Dodgers be on the list (maybe a share with the SF Giants)they should be in the top 3. A pattern I noticed of TPS is that they are top heavy of the NFL and NBA in their surveys and lists.
Now through all of this, where's the Boston Redskins moving to Washington? Or the Brooklyn Dodgers moving to Los Angeles? Or how about the Kansas City Athletics moving to Oakland? Perhaps the Syracuse Nationals moving to Philadelphia to become the 76ers? What about the Fort Wayne Pistons moving to Detroit? The St. Louis Browns never won a World Series, but the Baltimore Orioles did. Do the artists formerly known as the Washington Senators get a spot on here once they became the Minnesota Twins? The Minnesota North Stars never won a Stanley Cup, but the Dallas Stars did. The Hartforx Whalers never won a Stanley Cup (and I miss that "H" in the middle of the "W"), but the Carolina Hurricanes did. The Washington Senators (the 2nd incarnation) didn't appear in the World Series, but the Texas Rangers did.
Detroit Pistons fan here. I understand I’m replying to a year-old comment, but the Pistons’ Fort Wayne history is seriously underrated. Part of that is because they played their best basketball in the NBL, which the NBA has decided to erase from history for reasons that I don’t understand, but even ignoring that, they reached the NBA finals in two of their last three Fort Wayne seasons, with one of them coming down to the wire in Game 7. They also had two Division Finals (basically a modern conference final) exits. Their playoff streak continued for a while in Detroit, but from their move in the late ‘50s until the start of the Bad Boys era in the mid-‘80s, they only won three playoff rounds and finished with a winning record three times. Then you have the NBL era, when the Pistons were really dominant. They lost in the NBL finals their first two seasons, then won the next two. In both of their winning years, plus the following year, they also won the World Professional Basketball Tournament, which essentially invited the best NBL teams and best additional teams that weren’t affiliated with major leagues. This was all before the BAA debuted, so whether you want to acknowledge the NBL or not, it was the biggest professional basketball league around, with no real competition. They also had Bobby McDermott, who was pretty much the pioneer of outside shooting in basketball. With the Pistons, he won four NBL MVPs, one World Professional Basketball Tournament MVP, and was also the team’s coach and won NBL Coach of the Year twice. Relative to his era, he’s by far the most influential player in Pistons history. So in 19 years before moving to Detroit, the Pistons were pretty definitively the best pro basketball team twice (NBL champs and World Professional Basketball Tournament champs), were arguably the best team a third time (World Professional Basketball Tournament champs, but only reached NBL semis), made two additional NBL finals, two additional NBA finals, and employed a player who was arguably the best in the world at the time. As much as I love the Bad Boys and “going to work” Pistons, they may have achieved more in Fort Wayne than they have in Detroit. Of course, the Detroit move was still a good one for team survival, because Fort Wayne simply wasn’t big enough to support them. Plus, in a league that hates to change team names after a relocation, the Pistons’ relocation is the most “on-brand’ relocation there is.

More anti-MLB bias. Some you missed: Original Washington Senators becoming the Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Athletics moving to Oakland, Boston Braves moving to Milwaukee, St. Louis Browns becoming the Baltimore Orioles. Well, these were all > 50 years ago, and at least you did mention the only MLB franchise move of the past 45 years. Most other MLB moves were of teams already good (Dodgers and Giants from NYC to California) who stayed good or of bad teams that stayed bad (2nd Senators to Texas, Philadelphia A's to Kansas City)
The Cleveland browns and the Seattle supersonics have had a similar method before they relocated to Baltimore and Oklahoma city. The teams moved but the franchise names and history stayed in Cleveland and Seattle respectively.
Stars made it to two cup finals in Minnesota and had more playoff appearances than the Stars. One title cash in because of an illegal foot in the crease goal doesn't made it an improvement.
Fun fact: The modern-day Baltimore Orioles were originally called the Milwaukee Brewers, and the modern-day Brewers were originally called the Seattle Pilots.
The Expos/Nationals shouldn't be on this list. The Expos arguably would have been World Series contenders in 1994 if the strike hadn't happened. After the move to DC, they didn't win their division until 2012.
The Rams twice, from Los Angeles to St. Louis in 1995, Rams had 5 straight losing seasons before moving to the Gateway to the West, in their fifth season the Greatest Show on Turf was born where the Rams won their only Super Bowl in franchise history in 1999 when that was the relocation Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams (1995) vs the Tennessee Titans (1997), then made the playoffs 5 of 6 seasons (1999-2004), went to another Super Bowl in 2001 with a 14-2 record. Then the move back to Los Angeles in 2016, Rams were coming off 12 straight non winning seasons, in 2017 Rams won their first division title in 14 years and in 2018 another division title and first Super Bowl appearance in 17 years.
The New York Yankees. The were originally in Baltimore and moved to New York in 1903. Granted, it took them another 20 years before they won a World Series.
Where is the Los Angeles Dodgers on this list? The Dodgers won only one world championship in Brooklyn. That was in 1955. The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958. The Dodgers have won 5 world championships since moving from the East Coast(1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, 1988).
Top 10 super teams we could have gotten but were ruined by the organization. (Tigers- scherzer, all the red Sox.. okc-trading harden... colts-trading Faulk)
The Hartford Whalers relocation to the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997. Prior to the Whalers relocation they missed the playoffs their last 5 years in Hartford and hadn't won a playoff series since the 1985-86 season. In Carolina they quickly made the playoffs in their second season then winning the Eastern Conference Championship in their fifth season in 2002 followed by the Stanley Cup in 2006 their 8th season in Raleigh.
The Washington Senators becoming the Minnesota Twins, where they were 4 years old losing in seven games to the LA Dodgers (who also should be on this list after leaving Brooklyn) in 1965, and again the Washington Senators when they moved to Arlington TX, and became the Texas Rangers.
The Rams got better in St. Louis, then got better again when they went back to LA. The Chargers have struggled recently, and have now gotten better in LA.
The Tennessee titans should give the history and throwback Jerseys rights Houston Oilers back to Houston. The Houston Oilers are a better fit in Houston than Tennessee.
Montreal Expos and the Vancouver Grizzlies had useless management. Stu Jackson of the Grizzlies didn't even draft the player that wanted to play for Vancouver but drafted a player who didn't want to play for the Grizzlies. After the 1994 MLB Strike Jeff Loria had a fire sale and got rid of all the best players on the Montreal Expos roster. And how many teams made significant changes after the relocation?
But they made the playoffs more and more cup appearances in Minnesota. Also Dallas championship was won on an illegal foot in the crease. So not legitimate.
The Minnesota North Stars got better after they moved to Dallas and won a Stanley Cup after they became the Dallas Stars. The original Baltimore Orioles moved to New York and became they Yankees in 1901, and the rest is history.
How about the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. The Hartford 🐋 Whalers/Carolina Hurricane. The Boston/Washington Redskins. Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers.
OKC happened to get a team that was playoff bound, the Sonics were going to be in the playoffs that in the future years whether they stayed or left. They also would have beaten the heat in the finals if they were still in Seattle. Replace Sonics with Atlanta Thrashers or Atlanta Flames.
What about the Atlanta Braves, i know they won the World Series in both Boston and Milwaukee, but ever since the 90's i think they have been a lot better then they were in either location
@tps Suggestion: Worst Team Names in sports (active teams only) including names that don't take any sense: Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies,
The "Clippers" name makes sense. A clipper is a name of a fast sailing ship. Now the "Lakers" name on the other hand(and yes, I am a Laker fan) should have stayed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but oh well. Go Lakers!
Seattle was already on the tail end of a rebuild. OKC literally got the benefits of Seattle fans having to sit through a rough 3 year stretch.
And Kevin Durant is the greatest Seattle Supersonic of all time.

5:42 "Russell Westbrook has helped the Thunder retain their status as a perennial play-off team."
Too soon, man. Too soon.
The montreal situation was much more complicated than you glossed over. The nationals had 7 losing season in a row

Top 10 teams that got worse after relocation
Montreal Expos and the Vancouver Grizzlies had useless management. Stu Jackson of the Grizzlies didn't even draft the player that wanted to play for Vancouver but drafted a player who didn't want to play for the Grizzlies.
After the 1994 MLB Strike Jeff Loria had a fire sale and got rid of all the best players on the Montreal Expos roster.
And how many teams made significant changes after the relocation?
Actually, Cleveland recorded 2 winning seasons since its return to the NFL. 2002 (9-7 and made the playoffs) and 2007 (10-6 but missed the playoffs).

Minnesota North Stars < Dallas Stars?
I'm shocked the Yankees wasn't on this list... they were a relocation team waaaay back when
Dallas Stars (old Min. North stars) NEVER won a cup in Minnasota

Go Lakers!
Thank you for doing hockey
Lol I instantly thought of the rams.
