E102 - Jose Altuve Ejected When Umpire James Jean in His 1st MLB Plate Calls a Fair Ball off a Foot

  • HP Umpire James Jean ejected Astros 2B Jose Altuve for arguing a fair ball call that, on slow motion replay, actually struck the batter's foot. But because this play is not reviewable, and umpires didn't change it during crew consultation, the groundout stood. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2024/...

      The thing is that other sports have judgment calls that a reviewable; a foul in the NBA for example. Gonna keep on saying it: do what the UFL does and make *everything* reviewable. In any system where the reviews are _extremely_ limited to the point such that delaying games isn't a factor, I just don't see why there are these arbitrary plays/instances that aren't reviewable

    • @skinflutey

      @@Call_me_E_C because some calls are subjective. That’s how the rule is written. There aren’t objective guidelines to the rule just that it’s up to the ump/ref to determine. For example a check swing is completely subjective and left to the ump. In the NFL pass interference is subjective. You can’t review it because of the way the rule is written. Now if the MLB check swing rules were changed to be like the NCAA rules then you could make it reviewable.

    For some reason, this call is one of the most difficult for umpires to see........but the bigger issue is why isnt this reviewable? It seems that a lot of the calls we see that are missed could be easily fixed with allowing a challenge

      This one was near impossible to catch. Only one sound, the bat hitting the ball. It barely grazes the foot while it's a few inches off the ground, and makes a big dirt splash when it hits the ground. It should be reviewable, no doubt.

    • @swanamaker
      @swanamaker 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@PapaVanTwee5 Agree 100%. Additionally, the angle for the plate umpire to actually see it hit the foot, if he can even look fast enough, makes it so hard to see. And to be 100% sure on it from 100 feet away is equally as difficult. It should definitely be reviewable.

      Still waiting for you to strap the gear up and call the zone on triple digit gas WITH movement AND handle possible foul in the box plays like this…and cry me a river for what a hump like Altuve thinks he’s entitled to from The Game.
      Umpires are trained to track the pitch all the way to the mitt. When the ball is chopped sharply down, especially in the vicinity of the batter’s front foot, it’s difficult to see that from the plate umpire’s perspective. The umpire has a catcher in between him and the baseball on a possible foul in the box and…the umpire has the front leg and foot of the batter in between him and the baseball. It’s very easy for the plate umpire to get screened on a possible foul in the box situation. Plate umpire is also reading the reaction of the batter, too. Here Altuve makes ZERO indication immediately after the ball is chopped down that he was hit. As happened, the correct call was made here. On another YT channel recently there was some infrared camera footage on a similar play. A batted baseball generates heat when hitting a player in a way that can be differentiated by an IR camera in a way that hitting the ground does not. This would be simple for MLB to implement and should be considered by the rules committee along with real-time pitcher spin rates to assist with foreign substance violation enforcement.

    • @teebob21
      @teebob21 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Do you want a real answer? How don't umpires "miss" this in real time?
      Plate umpire has the worst angle. He's watching the ball come in, has a bat swing through his line of vision and is pretty much straight lined on a ball that goes down and may or may not have contacted the batter's sole. This isn't a call we guess on, not even at 10U games. If we see it, we call it....if we don't, we don't.
      U2 is 100+ feet away, and has the same straight line view. From that far away, U2 would have to be damn sure it went off the batter, and with a topspin ball like this, you can't be sure.
      U1 and U3 have pretty much identical views. The ball was swung on, topped, and rolled slowly forward. Again, in real time, calling this as a batted ball that hits the batter takes a lot of guessing. After all, it hit him in the bottom of the foot, if at all. U3 would be looking through shoe, and guessing. U1 would be straight lined and have no way to know for certain if it hit the shoe or was just a topspin nubber.
      This is just one of those batted balls where there are no good angles to judge. Yes, it should be reviewable in slow motion, but it isn't. Blame the commissioner for that, not the umpires.
      This could happen in a high school state championship game, or the finals of the College World Series and the looks available to the umpires would be the same.

Now there could've been contact after it hit the ground, but it also could've been all dirt.

    I downloaded the audio of this video and analyzed it in Audacity and there's just one lone sound, the bat hitting the ball. When I look at it frame by frame* I can see it just grazes his foot, which is lifted off the ground a few inches. The ball comes off of his bat (and foot) with so much spin it changes direction again when it hits the ground, with a big splash of dirt. My favorite angle is from the foul line extended and the 3rd base umpire is staring right in at it, and still couldn't catch it in real time. That's why this should totally be a reviewable play.
    I think Altuve should be more mad at himself, however. You always run out the play. He didn't and it made him look like an fool.

It can’t be reviewable if the umpire calls a foul ball and it didn’t hit the batter only because you can’t pace the runner OR call him out. That’s why it should be a “ONE WAY” reviewable call. • @lanem4304
    @lanem4304 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    sometimes as an umpire, you need to take into account the body language of players in situations like this. A professional who just sits there and makes NO move to run to first on a fair ball most likely only doing it because they got hit in the foot. Same thing, sometimes in a 2-man system, you have a swipe tag that you may get straight-lined on, but when you see the runner then immediately slow down to a trot rather than continue sprinting to the next base, it "helps" you fill in the blanks. Here, I completely understand the new HPU not seeing this in real time - very hard glancing touch on the foot; but when you have a chance to get everyone together and consult about it, I think you take body language into account. The real fix for this is making this reviewable; not necessarily all infield fair/foul plays, but you already allow replay for things like catchers interference and HBP, so why not batted ball touches batter while in the box - narrow additional instance for replay that I think will save a lot of heart ache in the future.

      pretty hard to call this one a foul ball, even with slo-mo zoomed in camera footage. this is an impossible call in real time. If you really don't think so, get your ass behind the plate then

      Nah, it hit the stands beyond the outfield in dodger stadium where the Astros won TWO games during that World Series, including GAME 7.
      I don't recall there being any trash cans in dodger stadium, so why did they beat them twice?
