I love the chemistry that these guys have with each other. It is what makes The First of October work so well. The creative energy was a blast to watch.
I was thinking the same thing. They communicate really well. One of them will get an idea, and the other guy immediately understands and hops on board.
it's fascinating to watch this because they start out with some decent riffs, then it starts to get a bit not as good in the middle, but by the end they're coming up with their coolest stuff.
So Muse and Royal Blood are touring together in the UK next year… if these 2 aren’t on stage doing their thing combining these two acts, a big trick has been missed 😂😂 Sooo many riffs here would fit into what both these amazing bands do.
After being fatigued by all the gear demos it is so good to see two dudes rocking out and how much fun live music is I hope more people do videos focusing on actually playing the instrument and songwriting instead of just the gear
I love when you two collab because I can see you communicate your ideas using very different language. like the Andrew's "swing thing" or Rob saying from "3-5" on the guitar. It's just cool to see how you can understand each other even with different music backgrounds

My favorite genre of YT videos is now besties hanging out with each other, doing what they love. All the joy in this video comes from the two of you interacting, and it's glorious. Rgarding the bass tones, I definitely picked up on it during the first few riffs (hooray for subwoofers!), so I'm glad you thought to mention it as as an editorial. Welp, that melted my face off! Damn, those riffs and that guitar tone were epic. First few were high-energy and definitely had that Muse / Royal Blood crossover vibe. Excited for 1st Octobers' riffage this year
Bro, rapid fire riff making, that's just insane to me. Takes me so much doodling to get something good, you just start moving your fingers and it instantly comes out. Blows me away the amount of talent you both have.
I love how much fun are they having. It's always such a delight to see musicians enjoying and "playing" (as in game) with music. Also, the progressive creativity that goes "what other possible sounds can we squeeze out of these limited instruments". Super exciting to see Rob and Andrew doing stuff together. Makes me nostalgic for the older-school TH-cam and I'm very glad Andrew is still very actively creating music on the internet
Top 6 definitely is #6 So Fooey, #8 Expired Chicken Sandwich, #16 Tritone split ( could be about razers in candy that the parents need to check for but secretly are just stealing the candy.), #22 Lead cleats (could be a song about tp-ing houses and/or causing any kind of mayhem during Halloween), #25 Roller Derpy, #33 Saloon at Dusk. I loved all of them. I have been watching you both for 5+ years and you two gave me the inspiration to make music. You guys are Awesome!
This is a wonderful demonstration of the fact that songwriting is basically as hard as you want it to be. You can spend weeks perfecting every note and every chord, or you can crank out a few riffs in a couple of minutes with your friends -and both are of course equally valid and have their time and place.
Thank you Andrew and Rob for this video. You're helping me mentally through probably the worst time in my life right now. It seems like every beginning of October tops the year before. But very thankful to have your new tunes to look forward to

So inspiring how much changing a guitar tone or time signature can inspire you. 14, 15, 31 and 87 are all straight bangers! This looked like so much fun to do! I also feel like I should be the person who qualifies whether this counts or not and I say it absolutely does!!! 🔥
Thanks for knighting me in the first place 🙏
I agree, the title stands!
This is one of those videos you turn on if your looking for inspiration, so many awesome vibes in here
This was sick, I like how fast you catch up with each other, on the same wavelength 👍 Talented musicians
Glad to see you here Hoot! Long time fan of yours :D
I love the chemistry that these guys have with each other. It is what makes The First of October work so well. The creative energy was a blast to watch.
I was thinking the same thing. They communicate really well. One of them will get an idea, and the other guy immediately understands and hops on board.
I guess Andrews idea of "switching up the tone" consists of just using a different fuzz pedal. 😆
10:32 is unironically a sick riff. Why the hell didn’t they use that?
That was the Missing Riff! They did do 100!!
Sounds like Ain’t it fun by Paramore
Title: "The Missing Riff"
it's fascinating to watch this because they start out with some decent riffs, then it starts to get a bit not as good in the middle, but by the end they're coming up with their coolest stuff.
So Muse and Royal Blood are touring together in the UK next year… if these 2 aren’t on stage doing their thing combining these two acts, a big trick has been missed 😂😂
Sooo many riffs here would fit into what both these amazing bands do.
I need a full song out of Saloon at Dusk NOW! THAT WAS EPIC
Check out “Our lady of electric light” or “jackhammer our names” by Clutch they have a similar vibe
I got me some Bob Seger - Turn The Page chills.
@@eh2643 Earth - Hex.
@@hv1225 anything by Earth from the last 10 years really
After being fatigued by all the gear demos it is so good to see two dudes rocking out and how much fun live music is
I hope more people do videos focusing on actually playing the instrument and songwriting instead of just the gear
I love when you two collab because I can see you communicate your ideas using very different language. like the Andrew's "swing thing" or Rob saying from "3-5" on the guitar. It's just cool to see how you can understand each other even with different music backgrounds
These are defined and well known music terms... things literally any musician will understand: it's not different language in any capacity
THIS IS MY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE VIDEOS ON TH-cam! PLEASE DO THIS AGAIN! ITS WICKED
taking influence from another post or two, personal list for convenience:
2:43 4- Funky Chicken
3:30 6- So Fooey (Maybe my favorite?)
5:39 9- Bike Pile (Or Maybe this is my favorite?)
8:35 15- Sloppy Ozzy
9:54 18- Rollerblading II
12:54 25- Roller Derpy
14:35 30- Wah-Termelon
16:23 34 - Paper Cups
20:33 44- Struttin'
20:46 45 - Dad Rock
21:26 48 - Racecar Rub-A-Dub
22:54 52- More Racecars
30:50 84 - Parallax
31:25 85 - Tricycle Race
32:35 91 - Every Fret Riff
35:53 99 - Forgot to Name
You two are an incredible duo. Even though Andrew has a guitar it’s evoking all the big bass and drum duos (lightning bolt, royal blood, dfa 1979) and i love it
i would listen to all of these riffs as full tunes an unhealthy amount of times
I just love that everytime you hear andrew play with the fuzz turned off, a second later they play the riff and the ffuzz is back on
There's something magical about watching two masters of their craft goofing around and playing (like kids on a playground) for a few hours. Can't wait until the next album in a day video drops!
(Also, next time do a couple extra riffs JUST IN CASE)
I want this with Rob on Guitar and Andrew singing.
Each riff gets one vocal line.
I CANNOT WAIT for the 1st of October videos to come out!!!!!
You guys are amazing! Love your free spirited energy and awesome creativity. Throws me back to jamming and just having fun 🎸 been a while, need to get back to it haha. First of October ftw!!!! Thank you for the inspiration 🤩
I’m excited to see you and Rob collaborating again. It’s fun to see you play off each other and work together.
POV: You are browsing your DAW’s sample library
It's these 2 that make me wish I had musician friends. Love their chemistry together!
Man, these two guys together... Nobody can stop them. THEY'RE FIRE!!!
Why dont they form a band.
13:49 Gotta love how Andrew took inspiration in the moment
That was hella cool
Here I am, struggling to get five tracks done in a year, while these guys blast out 100 riffs in a day, *next to making a full album in another day* 😖
You've heard of Skate Punk, now get ready for Rollerblade Rock
I can't stop staring at the Aerodyne P bass non export model in the background.
34, Paper Cups, sounded awesome. I could definitely see that becoming a full song.
That was my favorite
About to post the same
So many of these riffs were just absolute bangers.
How GOOD was Paper Cups though! Nostalgic and urgent sounding absolutely loved it
How hard was it to not Jam on like 80% of these for hours? Some real fire on some of these.
I would absolutely gobble up an album of your two piece Melvins-esque band.
andrew you are the coolest
Welp, that melted my face off! Damn, those riffs and that guitar tone were epic. First few were high-energy and definitely had that Muse / Royal Blood crossover vibe. Excited for 1st Octobers' riffage this year
That missing riff is the greatest masterpiece riff never written. It's a mystery. Who knows what that little riff could have grown to become?
Which missing riff? What timestamp?
@@lucasg.5534 Poor little 38 was skipped by mistake.
@@MortenBN1988 Ah yes, indeed it is a tragedy.
You might call it 38 special
Andrew never ceases to amaze. Such a well rounded musician and artist.
Bro, rapid fire riff making, that's just insane to me. Takes me so much doodling to get something good, you just start moving your fingers and it instantly comes out. Blows me away the amount of talent you both have.
Sometimes you just gotta go for it… I’m sure having a drummer and a nice pedalboard help lol, though it is impressive to do 100 in a day for sure
do this again, but after every riff, give the guitar a different randomised tone, give the drums a different randomised time signature and bpm
Steady now.
That’s a really good idea just get like a metronome to play random tempos for 8 bars or something that would be cool to see
you should put it on streaming as two 50-track albums, vol. 1 and 2
nah, it should be fifty 2-track albums
@@homercomeruntaco9345 loool
what a great drummer Rob!!! Great timing!
@@homercomeruntaco9345 jack stauber moment
I always forget you two get together on my Birthday to make a whole album, until I see the videos in my subscription-box.
Cant wait
Not sure what's more impressive. 100 unique riffs in 6 hours, or 100 unique names for them.
the royal blood inspo in the first few wow
I get the feeling Andrew has been listening to a lot of Royal Blood
Completely
Never have actually, I guess I better should!
They are really fun, you definitely should! Preferably a live set to get the vibe
@@andrewhuang go to their first album, sounds a lot like the stuff you guys were playing
The drums make it impossible to just copy the guitar audio and use as loops and is probably deliberate.
How did you stop yourself from just jamming through one idea? Some of those riffs were beautiful.
You guys are Awesome!
drowing in all this edm and rpa songs, this was a fresh breeze and pure eargasm. forgot how much i loved this
This is a wonderful demonstration of the fact that songwriting is basically as hard as you want it to be. You can spend weeks perfecting every note and every chord, or you can crank out a few riffs in a couple of minutes with your friends -and both are of course equally valid and have their time and place.
Hype for First of October! Love your guys' stuff.
Dude, by the 3rd riff I already thought you were a riff lord
The micing job on the percussion is immaculate. Along with just the chunkiest of pedal and effect selection.
GOLD
So you guys are going to go turn these in to a absolutely slaying Stoner Rock album, right?!
My favorite musical duo back at it again! Love em separate love em together
Thank you Andrew and Rob for this video. You're helping me mentally through probably the worst time in my life right now.
It seems like every beginning of October tops the year before. But very thankful to have your new tunes to look forward to
hey man, im sorry to hear things aren’t going well for you right now. i know im just a stranger on the internet but I really hope things get better for you soon!
@@victorwright5358 thank you for the kind words.
#3 # air bud xD
gives me such a ton Morello, rage vibe. Like, when you're doing dishes and throw a plate through a window.
#4 #funkie chicken
Instant James brown banger
When Andrew gives his perfect giggle laugh over a "boop" @13:00
Every riff sounded like a fusion of Smashing Pumpkins and ZZ Top. Loved every bit of it
The whole video reminds me of pastichio medley from the pumpkins with it being a bunch of riffs back to back as well
The combined musical talent and knowledge between you two is so impressive to me. Blows my mind
In case you're wondering, pedals are the following (though not sure of signal chain order):
-Xotic XW-1 Wah
-Chase Bliss Automatone Preamp
-Meris Enzo
-Meris Hedra
-Empress Echosystem
-Earthquaker Hoof Reaper
-JHS Muffuletta
-Boss PS-5 Super Shifter
-Walrus Monument V2
-Bananana Mandala
-Chase Bliss Dark World
-Kelley Dyno-My-Roto
So amped for First of October! Also please use your favorite riffs and turn them into songs in another video. Maybe another sort of timed challenge but swap roles? Andrew on drums and Rob on guitars?
Honest to god you guys give me OG youtube vibes.
Thank you for everything you guys do
When I had a band, this is what we used to do instead of the songs we needed to practice.
Your videos never fail to ignite my love of music by 500% every time I watch
The energy between the both of you is inspiring. Great video. Thank you.
