    It’s 3 am where I’m trying to download dozens of tie rod or steering rack videos. I got stuck Removing a tie rod. Being diy not having the tool; I nearly removed the rack just to get the tool to the inner tie rod. A friend is coming tomorrow to help me think about the issue, now I will tell him I managed. When you said turn the steering wheel to make the rack move out. I tried mine and now I learned something. Thank u thank u!

    A good idea to use a quality anti-seize on the tie rods threads. Especially if it is your own vehicle and plan to keep it. I brush it onto the threads of the outer and also the female end of the inner. Had one of these where I broke the tie rod and had to replace both the inner and outer tie rods. All because they were seized together and would not come apart to replace the boot.

    Very clear and straightforward! Thank you, I'm ready to begin on my 2000 tacoma now. One question about aligning castle nut with the hole - why not sneak up on the torque value until the holes line up? I'd be more concerned about overtightening than undertightening, given both the high torque setting to begin with plus the cotter pin already providing some added measure against loosening.

      Mechanics don't "sneak up on torque specs". Get it there, and if the holes don't line up for the cotter pin, simply tighten to next opening on the castle nut.
      Don't ever think you can sneak up to torque, unless you plan on taking 2 hours to get the torque wrong doing it your way.

    I bet if you torqued those outer arm castle nuts to 53 ft-lbf like the manual says... cotter would line up! Reference page SA-78, and diagram R13311 ['95 Tacoma, vol 2]. Beyond that, an excellent video and appreciate the focus of presentation. The 95/96 productions blended into each other... alot.

    Great video. I just did my 1994 Buick LeSabre. I wish the inner tie rod removal was as easy and straight forward as the Tacoma was in your video. My Buick was a P.I.T.A. Once again, great video!

    Gary, Thanks for your comment. I think you are probably right about the Toyota supplied parts. But, you may want to consider buying from us. We supply a Japanese made, OEM Quality inner tie rod. Go to our website and inter the SKU # TAC-ST-TREIN-9504. We also supply an outer tie rod end SKU# TAC-ST-TREOUT-9504. Both parts are for 95.5-2004 Tacoma.

    I did mine years ago just by crawling underneath my truck. I didn't disturb the position of the wheel. Easy fix!

      One difference so far on my 1998 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Extended Cab pick-up truck. The castle nut is underneath. The shaft it goes on has to go up to come out so the tie rod can separate from the steering knuckle. The Haynes Manual for Toyota Tacoma ...All 2WD and 4WD Models also directs to "loosen(don't remove) the castle nut from the tie-rod end balljoint stud, then install a puller and separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle." Do not believe them. Will be interesting.

    Great video, just used it to replace the inner and outer rods on my 2000 Tundra V8. They were welded on there I think. Got one off with a pickle fork but had to buy the other type rod puller with the press bolt.

    Great tutorial, while your in there replace LBJ and check CV axle very easy to change when doing this project. If feeling extra mechanical inclined to the UBJ too. Just did my 2002 Toyota Tundra 4x4 Access Cab SR5 using this video, a few different things on the First generation tundras, a 15/16 open end wrench will fit the Jam nut to remove it.

      +Rob Hernandez the bushings are supposably pretty hard to do without a press, most online suggest buying new LCA they can be found cheapest at Rock Auto online, I am in the process of replacing bad lower bushings on my 02 tundra I found lower control arms for $70, where as the bushings would cost $40, so $30 extra to save yourself the labor involved with replacing bushing vs whole control arm. Good luck!

      Hi Tommy Metzger,
      I went today were i had the truck aligned and when i went to test it it was still pulling to the right ( i had previously replaced the tie rod on that side that's the reason i took it to align it)
      At the time the tech told me that my bushings were not too good and they would need to be changed. When i took it back the next day due to the pulling to that side he said that the bushings on the control arms (lower) needed to be changed but that my tires would not wear out because he set the alignment to factory specs. Anywyas he quoted me 500 per side to replace the bushings with me supplying the bushings.
      So i will see what will be the cheapest route 1: me doing the job or 2: paying to have someone do it.

    Thanks for the comment. These tie rod ends do not have grease fittings. They are sealed and are designed to last with out a zero. But, we certainly agree that if the new tie rod end comes with a zero, then it should be installed and pumped full of grease when installed.

    I believe they can be applied to many toyota models. The parts would not be interchangeable but the basic procedure should be the same for the 95 Tacoma. Thanks for your comment.

    Great video! Question please. Sometimes I get confused as to what needs anti seize and what needs thread locker. For example I would think you would want thread locker where outer tie rod goes into inner tie rod but your suggested anti seize. Is there a time of thumb for which to use. Thank you for all the useful info!

      Michael Harless he never responded, so I’ll try my best. I’ve done alignments (I’m ASE certified and worked in a shop) where the outer tie rod actually had gotten seized where the inner and outer tie rods meet. The purpose of the anti seize being where they meet is so when you NEED an alignment, the guys in the shop don’t have to hit it with all kinds of penetration oil or even hit it with a blow torch to heat it up and loosen it. It’s just easier on us, and IF (not saying when) you need to replace the inner or outer or BOTH tie rods again, they’ll be much easier to remove and replace. The reason for the thread locker on the inner is because it’s not often that you replace inner tie rods, not only that, you don’t want the inner tie rods to come out unexpectedly... it’s no fun.       South Texas Very well said Mr. another reason that you don’t need a tread locker on the outer tie rod is because you have the lock nut that helps a lot to keep it tight 👍🏻

    Great video! please do upper and lower control arms on that same truck. Toyota doesn't sell the bushings alone but 'Energy Suspension' does, although if you go that route you have to re-use the original bushing cases (P I T A). If you don't damage the bushing cases you will save hundreds of dollars and you'll get longer lasting Polyurethane bushings. I was told you can melt the old rubber out of the metal bushing cases after you pressing them out of your control arm and then clean them up. Has anyone heard that?

      I know this was 2 years ago, but thought I would answer for anyone else interested. I just got through doing the upper/lower CA bushings on my 2000 4WD 4Runner and it wasn't too bad. If you heat on the outside of the control arm around the bushing you can hear it begin to sizzle and at some point the rubber starts to combust from the heat and it's just about ready to pop. 10 to 15 seconds more and set the arm down on some wood blocks and you can simply pop the bushing out with a ball peen hammer. After that, cleanup is minimal.

    I watched your video and went out and did this job. I wanna know what the 32mm was for? It didn’t fit anything I could put a wrench on. I did inner and outer and both old parts and new parts were exactly the same. I heard you say you were using the 27 but never once heard you say you were now gonna use the 32. What did you use the 32 on?

    good time to check rack bushings and replace if needed. also always BACK OFF castle nut for the pin, do not over-tighten - this can damage the nut threads and the grease boot.

    Today I went to get an alignment on my 3rd gen 4runner. The tech was having a tiny bit of trouble aligning it. He said my whole rack may need to be replaced and that my tie rods were floppy. Alignment was moving around a bit for him. My question is that do I reed to replace the whole rack like he said? I was thinking of just doing both inner and outer rods.

    that crescent wrench looked like a pipe wrench to me.

      In fact a "pipe wrench" has teeth on the jaws, meant to grab a smooth pipe that has no flats to allow any other kind of wrench to work.These are used by pipe-fitters.
      What you probably were referring to is a "monkey wrench" also known as a "ford wrench" that has a few manufacturers that includes Crescent....this tech probably is using a ford wrench made by Crescent so got into the habit of calling it by that name.

    My steering isn't tight like it should be ..I use to own a 2001 double cab V6 prerunner and the steering wheel felt really tight..anyways I own a 2003 double cab tacoma V6 tacoma and the starting feels loose do you think if I tighten the tie rods it would help

    FYI, the ends of my rack are 30mm (not the inner rod)...a 2003 DC 4WD. and a 30mm craftsman wrench is too wide to fit in the space between the washer and the bevel, it'd take some thinning with a grinder to make it fire. What wrench do you guys use?

    Good video,but you should mention why is the reasons to change those items and show the difference between old and new ,it is very helpful to know that specially in suspension parts,one more suggestion: on this Toyotas the steering nuckle is way to thin to use a sledge hammer to remove the outer tie rod, better to use a pitman tie rod puller,otherwise your steering nuckle looks totally smashed by the sledge hammer,adios amigo🕊👍🏻

    Great job only part that made me cringe was you banging with the hammer on the inner tie rod locking washer. This Is where I would have used the chisel in a more radial fashion than banging it at the angle you did. But hey just a thought. Excellent video. Doing this this weekend. Thanks!

    what size is the castle nut for the 4WD? and are both size open ended wrench needed for both RWD and 4WD, or is it one or the other? lastly, why do you hammer the side of that washer on the inner tie rod? i'm a newb, just doing my homework before tackling the job. thanks in advance

    If i torqued the castle nut to 67 lbs it would have squoze the boot flat... is there supposed to be something between the boot and the knuckle? Because both of mine and the old ones didnt have anything between.. and if i tightened the castle nut to 67 lbs the codder pin would be way up in the air not doing anything..
