    This Chanel made me realize my challenger dream. 1970 dodge challenger R/T, matching number 440, 4 speed, track package with dana 60. Needs some body work due to rust but all in good time, now i daydream about Nick rebuilding my engine

    Beautiful job on this 440 Nick! You and your guys know your stuff. Was wonderful to visit your shop during my visit to Canada. Love the dyno room. Wish you could have had an engine to test. I look forward to visiting you again in the future! Thank you again for everything and your kindness to me and my family. I will be sending you some pics of my cars via email. :)

      Man that is a high compression ratio. The valves and pistons must be real close. That is quite an accomplishment 👍 Good job. I hope to find a worthy vessel to hold a nice 440 or even a 340 in one day. Maybe a Demon, Dart, Charger, who knows.

    I love this vid!!!! Simply because, back in the 80's, my first car was a 66, 300, with the first generation 440..... That sound is a memory I will never forget. One of the strongest, lasting, motors ever built. My Dad, who owned garages, maintained the car since it was new. Yeah, it was a land yacht, but a total sleeper, with it's factory duel exhaust, tach on the floor, and double inlet air induction. Hell, it even had a reverb unit! The previous owner was an attorney who retired in 69 and hated the lines of the new Imperial and 300. He kept this car and when I we bought it, there wasn't a scratch, rip in the interior, nothing wrong with it and had 58,000 miles. When I drove it home, my brother popped the hood and he had a smirk on his face that told me something was up. My Dad told me the engine was a 383. Months later, the distributor went out and I picked one up. After marking it, pulling it from the engine and set it side by side with the new one, there was an obvious difference in the shaft length. My brother laughed his ass off when he drove me back the parts house. Hey, I was 16 and at that point, most my car experience was from Hot Rod, Motor Trend and car history books. My Dad didn't want the insurance company or me to know what was under the hood. Back then, you could lie about vin numbers and who could actually compile the data? I absolutely loved that executive, land yacht. I wish I could find another but they are few and far between. I loved that boat.

    Great video Nick ! I run a .030" over 440 in my 66 Coronet. With ported iron heads , .509 purpleshaft cam, Torker Ii intake and headers thru a TTI exhaust. 11.87 on Drag Radials through the mufflers. The engine has been run on Brad Penn oil and has not been apart for 20 years. Thanks !

    • @jonmccormick8683
      @jonmccormick8683 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The not been apart in 20yrs says alot and sticking with standard Mopar iron when possible (heads etc).
      I have a 1966 Charger with a 67 440 hp2 block. All iron with the Carter carb. I honestly never needed more than that with good high quality fuel. You need to keep these big iron engines cool though.
      With more than 500 ft lbs of torque from a modified 440ci you need to start thinking about replacing the 8 3/4 rear to a 9 1/4 or Dana 60. Uni body frame stretch etc.
      440 are very quick reving and with the torque multiplication of the TF727 3 speed auto quite capable out of the box.

    • @victordjinn632
      @victordjinn632 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The B/RB Chrysler's deep skirted block actually supports the crankshaft with authority. The main cap bolts merely have to retain the caps themselves, with very little stress on those fasteners. This is unlike a lot other engines where cap walk is a concern even at stock horsepower output; never mind "souped up". Yes, that is a good thing.

    I had a 1970 440 Plymouth Fury Police Interceptor that came from the factory with 390 H.P. I rebuilt the engine in 1976 with some really nice parts, including the purple shaft cam, 10.5 to 1 pistons, block bored .030 over, headers, mid rise intake, double pumper carb, new Mallory dual point distributor and 50,000 volt coil. It ended up with about 500 HP and, going back and forth to college 900 miles away, I could get 20 mpg highway thanks to the cop gears. The A-727 trans was rebuilt by a local shop who added a shift kit. That thing would scream and not shift from 2nd to 3rd until right at 100 mph, and then pull hard until the certified speedo bottomed out at 140. I miss that car.

    • @OverlandOne
      @OverlandOne 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I made about 20 trips from N.J. to college in Kentucky which was 840-850 miles (one way) and I could always do it with just a single stop for gas in West Virginia so, do the math. (20 gallon tank) 70 mph was just a little over 1,400 rpm. Gas had just gone up to $1/gal and more for premium so, believe me, I drove it like there was a raw egg on the gas pedal...also...legal limit was 55 back then too.

    About 20 years ago, I worked with a guy from Shelby Township, Michigan (outside of Detroit) who was in the middle of restoring one of these. His was the dealer demo with all the options EXCEPT it was the only one with the rear deck stripe delete. He was doing body work at the time, so I don't know what color it was, but it should be easy to identify without the stripe. He rebuilt the engine in one of the bedrooms of his house (must have had a very understanding wife) and he told me it was only one of fifteen or sixteen convertibles made with the 440R/T. Best of luck with your rare car restoration.

I last saw a 69 Dodge Daytona and a 70 Plymouth Superbird (feb 1988) in a driveway on way north out of town. don't know if they have been restored but could still be sitting there. The street could have been Townsite or highway 3. I was on way north to Cobaconk at the time.

    Nick's Garage has been a wealth of motivation on the muscle cars of my youth. I have a Aqua blue 440 ( using Nick's words) and wonder the story why it is not Mopar Orange like Nick does?

      I maybe wrong but I think the aqua 440 are from rv/trucks. My ramcharger's 440 was that color before I painted it red

      Chrysler used different colors for different model years. There are two different blue colors. The earlier one is a shade lighter than the later. Look on the side of your block to discover when it was produced.

    Thanks. It is 1978 Dodge 22' RV. Was hoping to hear it's internal components are the same as those great Nick's Garage builds.

    See kids thats how you earn a living, you work a lot, learn and try to enjoy what you do.
    You dont go wine and protest your way into thinking someone will simply just give what you want.

    Bronze mallet for that cam bearing tool, Ive had a small chip off one embedded in my skull near my left eye that went in a few mm deep, the doc recommended leave it there, that was in 1977 when I was an apprentice pulling cam bearings out of a 350 small block using a steel hammer and the chip off the cam bearing tool is still there, its hard steel, quality back then too, no chinese steel in there.

      FWIW I forget to mention, the place I was working at was a well known V8 only engine builder and speed shop in Dandenong Australia and was called "Nick's Service Centre", kid you not.
