Oh finally a TH-camr that doesn't brush these cars off as "ugly" and instead see them as fun quirky cars! As a Copen fan, I immediately clicked on this vid and did not disappoint
Quirky cars are incredible. I own a Renault Wind which is probably one of the newest mass produced quirky cars before the market lost all passion. A big problem with quirky cars though is they tend to be really REALLY hard to find parts for 😂
@GoroMajimaOfficial yeah it's one of those where you have to know what it is to be amazed by it haha. here in the uk there's only 1,800 or so left and having a collection edition, it really is special if you know what you're looking at
For sure! Renault is probably one of the only car manufacturers that still produce cars that are remotely quirky, and that’s why I love em. And also, that last part is why my parents will never support me obtaining one 😢😅
I love quirky and weird cars, I grew up with a first generation Mercedes Benz A-Class that was probably the reason I love these weird cars. I still want to own a Renault Twingo someday, it’s my favorite car ever!
The OG A class was so quirky and beautiful! Kind of sad that they turned it into this generic hatchback. Also, the Twingo is such a fantastic and unique machine too!
I also love quirky cars, myself. I can think of so many great examples, regardless of their success. - Citroen C3 Pluriel: Disregarding all the negativity about it, including being placed on various lists of 'worst cars', it was a fantastic example of classic French quirkiness in a modern package. With a proper retractable landeaulet roof, it's mighty quirky, and certainly deserves better than it has gotten over the years. - Honda Acty Crawler: Take an already quirky class of vehicles, the kei truck, and give it an extra set of wheels. Only one manufacturer attempted this in a production form, with Honda taking the leap in 1994, remaining in production until the end of second generation Acty truck production in 1999. It even came equipped with tracks on the rear wheels, making it part tank. That's quite quirky. - Citroen Ami/Opel Rocks/Fiat Topolino: Generally speaking, quadricycles are usually reserved for specialist manufacturers, not major automakers. But when Stellantis decided to partner up with Altran (now Capgemini Engineering) to introduce a line of quadricycles, it was bound to be quirky. But the Ami and Rocks take things to a different level, with parts being symmetrical, front to back, and left to right. The front and rear are exactly the same, aside from the functions of head and tail lights. The doors are even the same, with the left side's handle being near the front of the car, while the right side's handle being near the rear of the car. - Toyota Sera: This car's calling card of quirkiness is in it's roof and doors. Considered a 3-door liftback, the Sera has butterfly doors and a glass liftback that opens up behind them, with out bringing any of the bodywork below up with it. The doors are especially notable in that they were what inspired Gordon Murray to include them on the iconic McLaren F1. - BMW Z1: The Germans created something very unique with the Z1. It's doors didn't open outwards, or upwards, or even forwards...they literally lowered down into the car's bodywork, making the small roadster literally a step in-step out car, even with it being as low as it was. Wasn't the first car with retractable doors, that honor goes to the equally quirky Kaiser Darrin from 1954, another highly quirky car. - Volkswagen XL1: Possibly the most fuel-efficient non-EV production car ever built, the XL1 was intended to be as efficient as possible, with a goal of 100km on one liter of diesel. Of course, that wouldn't be the case on diesel alone for the production car, with it being found, in regular driving, to be capable of 2.3l/100km. Instead, it was actually a plug-in diesel-hybrid with 75km of all-electric range. Factoring that range into the efficiency of the car on 10 liters of diesel, and it was expected, by VW, to be capable of 0.9l/100km. Don't know if that's ever been tested to be confirmed or not. - Renault Vel Satis: Velocity and Satisfaction, that's what the car's name was a portmanteau of. What the car actually was, was a combination of a hatchback and an executive luxury sedan. Then again, so was the Safrane that preceded it. What made the Vel Satis quirky was the way it looked. Looking like a Renault Clio that tried swallowing a Fiat Multipla.
@@carcrasher88YT GEES Thanks for typing out such a detailed and fantastic list! I read through it all, and I definitely learnt something new (Renault Vel Satis) Hopefully it can educate others too. :)
This is probably why I've noticed an uptake in nuggeteers - that is, owners of quirky, old, cheap, and often unmaintained cars that they drive and work on for fun. Although there really needs to be more of a community for these that aren't built around specific makes like owners clubs are.
Yeah, that’s a really valid point! But buying a popular and demanded quirky car is getting pricier and pricier, which sort of limits the options we have. That’s why automakers should make more of em
@@Tedris4 Especially owning exotic oddballs can be a pain. You have to search obscure sites in foreign languages and learn how to work on them yourself. My poor beat has been sitting collecting dust because I'm not experienced enough to fix it and no mechanic will touch it.

Another quirky car I would mention is the 1st Generation Toyota Previa. I personally like its cute "egg" shape and its one of the only minivans that is mid-engined and equipped with a supercharger. Another cool feature that this van has that no other van has is that you can turn the 2nd row seats 180 degrees so you can face the 3rd row passengers.
I love my first generation Insight because of how much the car focuses purely on being efficient and the incredibly unique and engaging driving experience of always trying to maximize your fuel economy
@@chery6662 I've had it for about 7 or 8 years now and have no plans on ever parting with it! I also have an 84 Rabbit whichis pretty quirky as well, but the Insight definitely takes the cake in terms of the quirkiest car I've owned
Almost all older concept cars are quirky - even the supercars! Insanely unique and strange design and innovative features - shame that they were never produced and you can't buy them!
I honestly really like the design of the new Twingo (I assume you mean the concept version). It sort of reminds me of the original, but I do wish they kept the little grin on the bottom grill though! :)
Sadly the degree of quirkiness massively increases the selling price of these cars, my dream car, the Autozam AZ-1, is around 20k in comparison to the slightly less quirky Copens, Cappucinos and Beats :(

I'm a sucker for Kei Cars in the land of no speed limit (Germany), which is a REAL problem. The best we got were two models, the Suzuki Wagon R+ and the Opel Agila A. I bought a 2002 Agila back in 2020 and ever since then had a blast with it. The problem is.....both models are getting old, so parts are harder to come by nowadays.
