    I remember 1987. My friends and I were all "street racers", but not as hardcore as Tony and his friends. We followed their adventures in the magazines. I even had a buddy with a Grand National who followed Tony, Neil and Steve. I remember the Buick guy showing me a picture on the cover of a magazine where one of those guys ran something like a 13.3 while lifting one front tire off of the ground. Wow. There were almost no parts for EFI cars then. I had a 1982 Mercury Capri 5.0. It had a carburetor and a flat tappet cam. I could get that stuff for my car. Nothing was emissions legal, but you could get around that in those days. I had tons of fun.

      Jim, that was my car hiking the left front in the magazine...on Gatorbacks! Mine never saw the 13.30's though. Best outing was a pair of back to back 13.43's at 101. That was in the fall of 87. I sold the car over that winter because I wanted to pursue nitro racing, but by early '88 all of the hitter cars were down in the middle 12's.
      It was an amazing time, and it all evolved in what seems like the blink of an eye.

      I remember following them too and I had a Grand National. I even still have a couple of the magazine issues. I did some of the tips they gave hoping to get my Buick in the 13.90's. First time out I blew right thru that running 13.80's and .70's. Good times for sure. Oh yeah - you guys should see this pic of Tony on the editorial page from 1988. It is golden 😎

      @@UncleTonysGarage ....the tire technology has really exploded as well....the current compounds are in a whole different galaxy than they were.....I went through 4 or 5 sets of those early gatorbacks....man.....I ran a '79 Mustang 2.3 turbo and played with forced induction with a pressure carb and trying all manner of different water/methanol injection systems.....i even had one setup that ran real well that sprayed right into the turbo impeller from about 3/4" away. Man...I blew that thing up 4 or 5 times and had to jump through hoops to keep the boost from getting out from places it shouldnt get out of....lol That 2.3 Mustang was FAST for the day and only blew up once in a while...LOL
      Tony, you and I are of the same vintage and those were truly 'the days' of the 'modern' pre-computer controlled era.....and I miss them badly.
      God bless, brother....and I stand and salute you for this 318 project as I did the same thing with a '68 Dart that I bought with a blown up 340 in it.....got a running 318 2v for $20 and swapped it in while I re-built the 340.....the 318 surprised a LOT of SB Chev guys who blinked at the tree....lol

    I am a student of D.V. for about 40 years. I called him the other day and challenged him to a cylinder head flowbench competition for this build. He liked the idea so I will be driving up from Florida with my porting stuff. I dug out the only 318 heads I had in stock some 302 castings that have already had some work done to see what I can do with them. You are right about the carb, the intake will need a ton of work as well. I am so excited for this project! Thanks!

    This is the kind of hot rodding that really speaks to me. Stock eliminator goals with junkyard resources. Cubic brains is so much more interesting than cubic dollars.

    Cars Illustrated, Mr Mean Mustang what a blast from the past. Got my 90 notch back in 92 and used all those recipes and tuning tips. Ran every Friday night at ETown and shootouts. Man those were the days!

    Many years ago, I was working at a machine shop as a helper, and a stock eliminator racer was a customer I got to speak with. He had a 318 Volare running 9s at 8300 in the traps. I asked how he kept it together at those revs. He said he machined the piston tops as thin as he dared, and decked the block to get the compression back up. Lots of attention paid to rotating friction, too.

      That's the essence of what they're trying to do with this project 👍.
      If time is not a factor, you can blueprint an engine with even closer tolerances than a good speed shop. And you're right, frictional losses will be front and center. This should be fun to watch 😊.

      Mr. Vizard says a surprising amount of the fuel/air gets trapped in the top ringland from the expanding flamefront so the higher you can get that top ring in relation to the top of the piston the more of the charge you can use effectively.

      I HIGHLY doubt that. 8's in a 1/4 mile... if it's 8's in an 1/8 mile that is not something to brag about. Also you would need to modify the intake, the push rods, the distributor would sit to high to bolt down, also would cause the distributor gear to bind up. I can't see being able to machine that much off a block with out shit being all scewerd out of shape now. I call BS

    Cars illustrated was my favorite mag as a teenager car enthusiasts in the 80s.
    There was a Buick 225 article and the picture was this land yacht lifting the LF off the ground during a vicious body twisting launch. That made an impact on me. So many great writeups in that mag. Thank you.

    It took me this long to realize that Uncle Tony is Tony Defeo....yes THE Tony Defeo! I think I have read everything Mustang related that you ever wrote! I especially remember the article where your best was 13.40s @101. That's the article that convinced me to buy my first Mustang.

    My Dad swore by the 318. He loved those engines. Grew up in a few of them. He said it was the most reliable engine ever. And he kinda proved it to. We had Oldsmobile diesels and all the fluff of the 80's. He bought a brand new 1986 Dodge B-150 Van with a manual 4-speed overdrive transmission. I miss that van, it cooked for all the early eighties stuff my family drove before. I was 16 in 1989. I gave that van hell.

    Back in the '80s, I put a 360 intake with a thermalquad on a stock 318. No port matching or nothing, just plopped it on and bolted it up. You had to come out of the hole a little easy or it would bog but once you got up to about 20 mph and kicked it in the ass, it definitely sunk you in the seat! The sounds coming from the engine were pure Mopar music! Porting, cam and headers would have taken it to a whole new level. It doesn't take a whole lot to wake a 318 up!

    Just received my grandparents 1982 Chysler New Yorker with the factory 318 and air cleaner computer hooked up with a single O2 sensor. Nice car with fancy, red furry interior. Making it a 318 sleeper...

      I had an '82 New Yorker years ago. Was a 318 car as well. Ditched the lean burn system and a few other mods. She ran like her head was on fire and her ass was catchin'! I miss that car!

      Shitcan that Lean burn immediately. When they go haywire, 99.9% of the time, they burn a hole through a piston.

      Remove the lean burn and swap the carburetor..That crap carburetor robs the car of power even if you remove the lean burn!!! Chrysler made another 2bbl and it gave the car some kick...Cant remember the name or size but its a 2bbl..I usually went to the junkyard and looked around,I could tell by looking at them,usually a Dodge Van or Truck from the late 60's -mid 70's..

    Tony, for some of us duffers who won't ever race, but want to get the best out of our grocery go getter or old work truck, this is great. I massaged my 83 straight six F150 a bit and ran runs against myself. Now I have a longbed that makes 22 mpg on the highway and can still tow 4500 lbs with ease. Different goal, but the same process: get the most out of what you have.

    This is the type of thing I been waiting to see done for a long time on youtube! Using your noggin and tricks to get it done on the cheap. Reminds me of my youth of trying everything possible to maximize the output. Like you said, no internet at that time so it was really fun racing your friends and trading "secrets". Looking forward to seeing what You, David and Andy come up with!!!

    Back in the day, I read Cars Illustrated, And I still have most every copy. There was Tony, Tony Mopar, who bought a 5.0, And then Neil, and Steve C. It was awesome to watch !

    Tony, what you did with the Mustang and now with the 318 is the engine builder equivalent of the old International Race of Champions series. They tried to create clone cars to test the quality of the drivers, and you are taking a cheap engine and testing the quality of engine bewilders. BRILLIANT!

    I've beaten a lot of people who had cars that should have been faster buy I out drove them but the basic principle is solid. I always had more fun because I wasn't worried about getting a dent or scratch

      Latest go-fast goodie,we'd get it.
      Thing is, my dad knows his stuff and would get it dialed in and show me along the way.
      I'd always be a fender length on him or better when we ran.

    I'm as close as you can get to the bottom of the tank. No money and no real mechanical skills past doing an oil change. Always been a car nut in talk only. I'm excited to watch this series! I have waited 56 years to get enough money together to have a shop work with me to build a cheap hotrod like I wanted to build when I was 14. I have a clone of my first car with the same flathead six as my first car, but I just had a shop "remanufacture" a 1968 318 block that's been sitting in my garage for 15 years. However, first I ported the heads using your tutorial. I'm bolting stuff on and having a fab shop do suspension upgrades and I'm going to love it when it's done. Point that I'm trying to make is that not everyone has the money to make their ideas come true. Not everyone has the skills to make their ideas come true. But if you can be happy with what you are able to do while being true to who you are... well what more could you want? I don't need a big-block 800 hp car. But I hope there is a trick or two that I can learn from you that will add just 10 more horsepower... I sure enjoy your videos.

      No money, no real knowledge except by learning by myself and own mistakes.
      I’ve been gathering parts to do a refresh on a 351C.
      Fingers crossed it doesn’t blow up on first start, I’d be devastated and wouldn’t have the funds to start again.
      But I’m excited. 👍🏽

    Love you telling this old story bc I was so there for this back in the day. I remember my first pass on my 88, 14.6 at 98 mph. All me friends has em too. They had money and I had the junkyard. That car ended up with parts from a bunch of different Ford's in it, looking for the gains on the cheap, beating guys with more money than brains.

    My wife had a charger 1976 with a 318single exhaust. Timing Chain went bad. I put in a 340 cam and a new set of early chain and gears. It changed that car totally! No carb or exhaust changes 120 mph and still climbing! I’ve often wondered what a good exhaust, manifold and 4 barrel carb would have done? God Bless Tony.

    Right now we are experiencing the true nature of engine building. I have not seen an update on this project in a month. Which is encouraging to me, because sometimes your builds come to, what seems to be a complete stand still. It weighs heavily on your mind when you have to wait for a part or tool. It's encouraging to see that even legends like David Visard, Andy and UT have those same issues.

    This is the true essence of hot rodding to me.. Taking something and modifying it with every trick you can think of or find out about without having to just throw parts on something to get results. Actually testing and tuning and optimizing what you have.. Take of as much weight as you can.. Light tires and wheels make a big difference.. A pound on a wheel in like 100 on the chassis.. Use a just big enough drive train to get as much power to the wheels as possible.. The rear axle.. That can weigh a lot and sap power for no reason..

    I rebuilded mine 318 in mine 69 Sport Satellite a long time ago and all I did was put a mild cam in it and a 4 barrel carb and intake everything else was stock from pistons to heads and it ran great so i can't wait to see what you guys do with this 318.

      I'm doing a similar thing with a 318 in a Valiant sedan that will be in a vintage TDS event soon. My bet I'd that people will have a hard time believing it's a simply/"Baby" 318

      @@m1a1hm nice; I held onto things some I could one day assemble something usable, unusual and "Fun" for what it is...and I got given a beige '76 Valiant sedan with 88k miles. It gets more looks & is less stress than the GT350 we have- every idiot thinks you want to race or they feel the need to show you how fast their Altima is. Valiant? Just smiles & 👍

    Years ago I had a 71 Charger with a 318. It had whatlooks like the same intake an carburetor as you have. The car ran surprisingly well. I would love to have that car today.
    My current project is an 02 quad cab 4x4 Dodge. Just finished building a 46re transmission today. Start the install tomorrow. Future plans include building a 5.9 magnum with increased compression, some port work, reground cam and possibly a home brew crossram intake. Yeah I know that sound crazy. Still thinking on that one. This will all be done on a very tight budget with as many stock parts as possible.
    I am very much looking forward to seeing what you and DV come up with on this one!

    I love it. Reminds me of all the fun I have in my little air cooled Volkswagen buggy, driving with lifted jeeps and pickup trucks. Sure I could pay big bucks to build a big 4x4, but I have made that little VW go anywhere they have gone. Good times.

    I remember those 5.0 litre days too, but I was driving a 67 383 Coronet. To get cheap insurance, the car had to pass for stock, no aftermarket speed equipment at all, and it turned out to be great fun tuning and optimizing everything. Make the engine at least as good as it was new, then small improvements beyond that, as well as chassis tuning. It was great seeing the ET’s slowly and steadily dropping, mostly from an accumulation of minute changes and experimentation. These days, everyone’s first change would be a stroker motor, but I’m still working with 383 cubes.

    This is 1000% what my Fairmont build was. $4999 total project cost and thought I built a pretty solid all around car - (some) speed on the low compression 302, wheels/tires, brakes, suspension upgrades, rear end upgrades and fresh interior

    That's a great trick to offset gring the crank to get less deck height. I'm sure the big time racers know this but back yard hobbyists probably won't.

    I am excited to see the outcome. Nothing sets better in my gut. I don't doubt for a second that with some work, it CAN be done. Yep, work. If you aren't spending money on parts, what else is there? Dad always said you have to work for what you want. This will be a great lesson for the kids with deep pockets.Reminiscent of the days when guys would port their own heads and grind their own cams.

    I have never disliked the small V8s from the big three. I have seen some absolutely evil 318s and a couple of pretty stout GM 305s as well. I can not wait to see this tiny beast run!

      I would love to see these guys do some 305 work, It would be a real challenge since the smaller bore really limits valve sizes. But I figure if the 1957 mechanical injected 283 could get 1HP/cuIN then the 305 should be able to at least get there fairly easily.

      @@yurimodin7333 the 305 HO heads from the early 80s are pretty effective .
      So much so that it is common for guys to put them on 350s to get the 58cc combustion chamber .
      No , due to chamber size restrictions , you can't use the "normal" 2.02 intakes like you can with a 4" bore , but you CAN replace the seats and use the 2.00" intake valves from the aluminum L98 Corvette heads (which have the same 58cc chambers !)

    Offset grinding the crank to get the pistons up close to the deck is pure genius! My 68's pistons were about .050 down hole, guessing your pistons will be about .080 down, with 1.74 pistons.

    Perfect timing again. This is exactly what i am doing at the moment. I traded for a decent 66 barracuda 273 automatic 2bbl. I pretty much have zero budget to hot rod it due to life and family stuff. So I am trying to do everything I can to make it faster with all stock parts. Currently I am porting out the spare 2bbl carter it came with. Cobbled together the exhaust with stuff off other cars. I'll mess with the heads and stuff later. Looking forward to the build.

    I’m glad you said 13.90 is fast because I agree with you. I hear a lot of these kids with the car bug saying hellcats are slow… like come on. On the street a 14 second car will put a smile on your face idc who you are

    Oh man I dig this. I've been thinking about a 318 with only stock parts but using a 340 cam and manifolds. No headers, no aftermarket parts, no nothin' except stock 318 parts and those 340 intake and exhaust manifolds. It's going in a sneakily lightened 70 shortbed Sweptline w an a833 OD. Can't wait to see what you learn

    Your take on Engine Masters is literally first generation Stock Car Racing. What a glory period.
    I really hope you use a stock cam - either THE stock cam or a used one from any other LA engine. Everything else you've talked about doing is know-how and easily-accessible machine work to anybody. I don't know many people that can get a custom regrind on a camshaft done cheaply. It would spoil the whole idea in my personal view, but either way, we should all relish the opportunity to learn a bit from DV.

    I had a 71 fury with 318 = 2 barrel, it got the best gas mileage of any V8 car I ever owned

      Brian yes! My ten year old ‘74 Charger 318 flipped the timing chain when I was visiting DC, stuck for not knowing anyone I just took it to the first garage nearby.
      That mechanic, Army vet, had the car in and out within the day. Driving 600 miles home it was getting 29mpg and I wasn’t babying it at all. (Never did). Couldn’t believe it thinking my numbers were wrong, but yes the next 500 mile trip 28.5mpg.
      I wish I could thank that man for his work and application of his knowledge and experience.

    I do love the concept. Let's think for just a moment about cost effectiveness, though. Machine work is not cheap, at least where I am. A used 4bbl intake and carb combined with a modern cam would probably get more bang for the buck for most people who aren't a machinist themselves.

      I mentioned that too but Tony’s goal isn’t to make the most power with the least $$$ spent but to make the most power with the parts you have on hand. It’s not what most sane hot rodders would do but it’s for entertainment value. Aka views

    I love this build! This is the kind of thing the magazines rarely did since it was always about product placement. I remember reading David Vizards books as a teen and messing around with things in the garage. It’s going to be great seeing the man in action on this build.

    This should be a blast! You clearly know more about sort of thing than most of us, my self included, but I gotta tell you: I can't imagine that carb/manifold combo actually meeting your goal. That little carb looks like a perfect candidate for being converted to a doorstop, and that intake looks like a potentially effective anchor for your small fishing boat.

    Cool project! 318s are not aspirational engines but maybe you guys can turn that around. Now taking the boring and stroking into sccount, will you aim for more than 318 HP with the added displacement? Engine dump test?

    I'm very excited to see this happening. As a long time Mopar guy I have been wanting to do this for a long time. I have replaced many 360s that were blown up with 318s.

      yup, little mild mannered 318's were very reliable and easy on fuel, we didn't care if a Cuda/Roadrunner/Charger/Satellite daily driver was all show no go on cruise night. we wanted decent gas mileage, loud pipes and a loud stereo, life was good.

    I'd rebuilt my 1977 Dodge 318 engine using JC Whitney parts. Stock bore rings, main and rod bearings, gasket set and a no name cam upgrade. The lift is .420" and it idles nice and smooth. Got an Edelbrock Performer intake and a Edelbrock 500CFM four barrel carb. A mopar breakerless distributor works just fine. Cast iron late model Magnum exhaust manifolds are used. It's coupled to a nice 727 Torqueflite and an 8 3/4" Sure Grip 3.23 rear. Everything is stuffed into my 1956 Dodge 1/2 ton pickup with a Camaro subframe. It is an absolute blast to drive. Plenty of power, (275?) and it was cheap to do. Using 87 octane is just fine. Not the fastest, but not the slowest either. Total cost for the rebuild is less than $500bucks. That's what it's all about. No engine "tricks" either.

    Great idea Tony...in the 80s I raced a motorcycle and a colleague living in new Plymouth nz built a T bucket with 318 engine...turned out to be quite powerful, however he received a lot of criticism for running a valiant engine, he did win a few races before he was taken seriously....don't underestimate the 318...kind regards...William

    I live the true hotrod lifestyle, I'm going as fast as I can with very little money and lots of passion, I learned how to do everything because I couldn't pay someone to do it. I love this stuff, there is nothing more satisfying as beating a high dollar build with cobbled together garbage built with your hands and brain.

    Watched a stock 5.0 Foxbody LX Hatch, with a close ratio top loader, 3.73s, Detroit locker, and full drag suspension and drag radials crack a 12.96 on a test and tune night.
    The brand new 5.0 coyote cars were in the 12-13s.
    250hp and supporting chassis/suspension drive train vs 411hp.

    People say the same thing about the chevy 4.8 but its actually not a bad engine for making power. The bore size is the same as a 5.3 and they made similar power numbers around the time when they first came out. I tell people that the bore size between the 318 and 340 isn't all that much of a difference to be a big deal when making power. Just because the bore size is under 4 inches doesn't mean that it won't make power. The 318 is a good engine. 👍

    I did a similar thing with a 351C many years ago but did use an aftermarket cam but made sure it still retained a smooth stock idle.
    It came out as a very nice engine, smooth and grest to drive and as much power as many combinations that has a few extras but no real major blueprinting. Good luck with this, there is great satisfaction with getting good results from effort, time and thinking as compared to catalogue surfing 👍

    Fun FACTS : My dad's last street car was a '68 Fury 3 w/ a 400 H.P. 318 built by Bill Schiffsky of White Bear Lake , MN. Who built and raced his Bear town Shaker Funny Car ( that was my FIRST CAR in '76 ) .

    I absolutely love the concept of this video. I am a Chevy man I always wanted someone to do this exact same thing in a documentary for the Chevrolet 305. I know the 305 is a flaming dumpster fire but I just want to see what would happen if somebody did the same idea

    Some of the lower budget racing has stories of people having an exact replica of a motorcycle frame made from titanium, that does not work if the racing includes minimum weights checked. Lots more stories about special fuel used, that caused the race engine to only last for one race, maybe why you sometimes see an engine fail near the end of the race. A legal sneaky trick is having just enough fuel to finish the race, for less weight, why they sometimes lose a lot of power at the end because they used more fuel than planned. It is similar for tires, trying to get the most traction without having the tires too worn at the end of the race, for longer than drag races and with corners. I had a 1972 Plymouth Barracuda with a 318 small block, little 2-barrel carb, and a manual 3 speed transmission. I put my extra money into bodywork, paint, shag carpet, and diamond tufted new vinyl seat bottoms in the front. It got up to 22 miles per gallon on the highway, important from 1978 to 1980 to save more for college.

    "only parts that can be found on rock auto." was a phrase spoken by you. Well, here's a slight cheat. STOCK magnum pistons have a slight compression height increase over their LA counter parts. Something to think about.

    I certainly do remember the 5.0 Mustang days. It was being bought as year-round cars here in Michigan. When winter rolled around, it was the end for a lot of them. Short wheelbase and worthless for winter tires.

      That's what I used. They are plentiful and cheap. And they have a stock roller setup...added bonus. Addressed many of the 318 issues by milling deck, bigger valves, gasket matching, porting, taller pistons, custom grind cam. A lot of sweat to make a lil 318 be a screamer but, a lot of fun as well.

    When I was in my 20's I worked part time for Dixon Performance and Engineering, he had a Saleen come in, and the engine was modified in a sneaky way. The Ford 302 came stock with 1.6 rockers, so the bolt holes in the heads for the rockers were plugged and re-drilled and tapped slightly off-set so stock stamped 1.7 Ford rockers could be used and still look stock, just to get a little more lift for the valves.

    I have to say I love the whole concept of this project. I think maybe uncle T should maybe talk of his days of the 5.0 mustang a little more than he does...him being a mopar guy I feel it might be alittle painful haha. I and many others I'm sure wouldn't hold it against you if you used a cast intake and a thermobog for this. My thinking is what would John Q Hotrodder have available on the cheap at that time. Hell...wouldn't hold it against you if a cam was installed..I watch with much curiosity.

    Same happened with the ls1. In Australia it was who can run the fastest ls1 unopened, the cam only. It was great fun.

    I've got a dozen 318's in the shop. I love them, current two that im building are both stock bottom end both 1967 blocks. First one is Aluminum heads, 318 marine pistons (trying this for the first time) brings piston right to the top.of.the hole. Standard bore, Whiplash cam, air gap intake and brawler 750 carb.
    Second one for my 71 duster 4 speed is 67-318 stock bottom end, bored .060 over, aluminum heads, air gap intake, comp Big mutha thumpr, holley 850 DP race carb. Shall see but both are snappy as hell on the run stand

    Great video and really cool project UTG! And the really cool thing is.... if you are Chevy Lover, these same principles can be applied to the "Throw Away 305" that you can usually pick up on the dirt cheap! If you are a Ford Lover.... this stuff applies to those 2v 351M's that no one wants to monkey around with. I don't know... it really unlocks the door to many of those "throw away" engines that no one wants to build because of Dollar per Pony.

      Even less loved than the 351M is its sister , the 400.
      Say "400 Ford" and everyone says "garbage".
      When they were brand new , my uncle had a 1977 F150 4x4 , my Aunt had a 1979 Bronco , and my cousin had the Indy 500 F150.
      All had the 400.
      Reliable as a hammer , you just couldn't hurt them .
      And while it was no "Little Red Wagon" , they were pretty quick for the time .
      Surprised they got no love !

    I'm excited to see the build and results. This takes me back to the early/mid 90's building cars in Scouts and seeing how fast you could make yours just by shaping/weighting the block of wood provided.

      Pro tip : it was far more effective spending your time polishing the nails that mount the wheels , first with 600 grit Emory cloth , and then valve grinding compound . Then powdered graphite as an axle lubricant . Then drill a pilot hole all the way though the wood block to assure that your axle (nails) are perfectly aligned with each other .
      The aerodymics aren't as important as frictional losses and alignment issues , as long as you have some sort of wedge design . As far as aerodynamics go , though , ROUND the back of the car so it doesn't create a vacuum at the rear of the car .

    A friend of mine from what WE call FREAK SHOW LANE told me about MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, earlier today. I love the concept, it matches what DV writes in his books. Thats why I have so many of them. How to Make Power, Performance with Economy ect. I am not a 318 m Mopar fan, but I do have a Chevy 307 and a couple of 305's looking for something to do. I will be watching closely.

    This is a refreshing idea & will entertain & inform. This approach to "speed" is what brand new "Strictly Stock" was to NASCAR back in 1949. Uncle Tony, i knew Smokey & he attempted to "mentor" me about engines by letter, many many letters (no email in early 80's when i raced. You'll probably be requested to do sequels to this initial build.

    This is off product mention but I had a great time rescuing /salvaging 70's,80's, vintage Japan motorcycles, it was fun picking on new Harleys (they would give me the hairy eyeball at stoplights) so I did accommodate them on my old 750cc air cooled and liquid cooled V-4 units...or ppl would say "what is that?!" ... Love the Chrysler tech Sir(logging 22years in the RamCharger this year..(318 early 90's rollercam long block ) with the 86' 2 bbl fuel system, it has good power & decent milage.

    I used to wait every month to see the progress on Neil's car and try his modifications on my '87 GT. I had the fastest 5.0 in SW Missouri running 13.0s on factory Goodyear rubber. Some of the most fun I've ever had modifying and racing any Mustang I've owned. Barely able to afford the car payment and insurance made maximizing what you already had a priority. 😉👍🏁

    In 1966 the Ramchargers did exactly what your trying to do with a 273 4bbl they did it with iron heads, very little portion work a 354 hemi valves, they did use a hotter cam but didn't off set grind the crankshaft. I think those heads you have are better than 1966 273 heads, with a 0.060" over bore you should be able to go to 1.88" to 2.02"intake valves and 1.60" exhaust valves. If you port it right even with a 2bbl, 318 HP should be achievble

    This type of engine builds is stuff I like to do especially on slant6s . I did the same stuff on my 225 but I have a couple more stock mods I'm going to do especially to the 2 barrel carb in the dart and will be repeating the process on the 170 1 barrel in the project valiant

    11:00 ... We did... Those little 318s are underestimated.
