    I like this talk about clients wanting from pictures. They don't understand that that picture is the creator's actual creation of mindset inspiration and capabilities. Not all nail techs are exactly the same at that same "creation." But yet the client would think that you are enable of doing "everything" that has been posted when in reality you can't be excellent to everything due to the originality of the work. You can have 5 bakeries on a 2 block radius and every basic yellow cake or vanilla ice cream will taste different from the next. It's the same difference with nail art. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 Great talk. 🤗🤗🤗

    I went to a spa and requested a frosted icicle effect for Christmas nails. The tech admitted to me shed never done the design before and I agreed for us to wing it. It turned out pretty good. Was actually proud of her

    During my career I have never had a client who wanted stiletto and I am so thankful for it 😅

      Never? How long you been doing nails? If you don't mind me asking. I don't mind stiletto, or any shape really. I don't like doing short nails. I hate it! Especially when a client wants these acrylic designs that are on long nails, but they want them short. Alot of it is impossible! There isn't enough room.... but I just don't like doing short nails.

      @@heathermullins3620 Since 2017 but early 2020 full time. My clients are all into almonds or tapered squares 🤷‍♀️ Most of them have pretty short nails too so I think that is why but still. I love short nails. They are charming and you can do more than people think. I totally agree with you that it is annoying when people want designs from long nails on short nails though.

      Honestly, stilettos are way easier than they look! I know they seem super intimidating at first but it's really just all about correct form placement and proper structure. And dont be afraid of making them too pointy! i did that at first and just ended up with almond 😂 It makes sense if your clients don't ask for them tho, but it never hurts to have an extra skill under your belt, definitely worth trying 😊

      @@davi8813 I know they aren't that bad. I have trained to do them and I can but I don't like doing them and I am not too fond of the look 🙈 They remind me sooo much of the press ons from halloween kits I got as a kid and I can't unsee it. It is ALL I think about 😅 That is why I am happy my clients are sticking with almond and tapered squares 😁

    I think this is a very realistic topic: sometimes someone wants something unusual like lipstick shape and that may not be something people do a lot. The pictures are so helpful. It’s good you’re covering something so awkward so people know what to consider and aren’t on the spot. Sometimes clients are used to a certain thing and you may have a recommendation they haven’t tried yet that could fit their needs better and this would be a good time to suggest something that you may be more comfortable with but also could be a new service they may enjoy in the future- like the dip vs gel example.

    This happend to me once, my nail tech moved out and nobody in town was doing almond-stiletto, this one girl at my job told me she was a nail tech and could do that shape and little did i know (she didnt mention) she was a new tech, didnt know how to even start shaping them, it took her seven hours and the shape was just ugly, of course a paid but never ever went back, now i do my own nails and i totally rock almond and stilettos ❤

    I do gel nails so far, 4 months in. Would love advice for working on clients who naturally have a strong C-curve on their natural nails and how to handle the appropriate thickness and filing techniques to accommodate their natural shape without harming their nailbed, without filing the product too thin around the sidewalls and cuticle and how the overall shape should be so it's not too thick and still looks clean and perfect. Love you guys, thank you for all of you!

    The same is true with tattoo artists and other art forms...the artist has a personal style and preferred medium that they use well. This doesn't mean an artist won't experiment, they just wouldn't on a client or commissioned work. Clients get the "tried and true" method and testing new stuff should really be on yourself or a loyal client with full transparency.

    I’m always super honest with my clients about what I’m confident in and what I’m not. I’ve been really lucky that most will say “No matter how it turns out, it’s just 2 weeks” and they will be my Guinea pig for something new. If it’s a new shape and I don’t think I have enough time I always tell them we can’t today but I’ll book longer next time and we’ll do it then. You’re right, they would all rather I’m honest and fail than not be and fail. I think I’m less confident in my skills than I should be but I have to err on the side of caution, I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I messed someone up. That’s why when I went to school I did nails only and not cosmetology. If they hate their nails I can take them off and start again. If I cut 6 inches too much and turn their hair green, there’s no fixing that same day 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Yea I absolutely can’t stand dip powder- no offense to other techs who offer it. I just can’t get past the concept that it’s making so much contact with clients’ fingers and reusing the powder for someone else is just weird for me. And I had a client who went to the ER for an infection after having dip done with a cut on her finger. Anyway to the ones who want dip I suggest doing builder gel and then if they’re super adamant then I would have someone else do it with monomer instead of dipping. But if they want me they have to do acrylic or builder gel. Sometimes you have to know what you’re comfortable with and put your foot down, cus otherwise they’re just not the client for you.

      @davi8813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I explain the same thing to my clients when they ask if i do dip. I absolutely refuse to lol. And when i explain that its the exact same thing as an acrylic or gel overlay theyre usually surprised that it's not this magical organic product that's so much healthier.

    • @catekimple4856
      @catekimple4856 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried to post a pic but this won't let me. You should not be reusing powder from one client to another. There is a dip powder collection/ pour system. Client puts finger over tray, you pour the powder over the fingernail and tap off excess. A removable tray let's you pour that powder over the next nail etc. This powder should never go back in your original jar. Anything left that has touched the client should get thrown away. Fresh for every client to avoid transfer.

    I have a new client who has been going to a chop shop to get her nails done prior to coming to me. They have been doing her acrylic so thin that when they efile, they have been slowly thinning her nail plate which is now splitting all over the place even up to her cuticle area. She wants the same from me and when I explain that she needs structure and a protective layer on her nails, she doesn't get it because they have been doing this for so long she thinks it is how it is supposed to be done. What do I do? Keep her and continually explain? or let her go? Because she thinks the nails I give her are thick, when in fact they are still only a 1/4 of what they should be.

    • @dynamitedinah4lyfe
      @dynamitedinah4lyfe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      If you’re confident in your aesthetic and she doesn’t like it then she shouldn’t be going to you 🤷🏻‍♀️ As a specialist we’re past the point of convincing others that we know what we’re doing. Our clients should trust us and genuinely enjoy how we do their nails or find another tech to better serve their needs.

    • @davi8813
      @davi8813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If it were me, i would try to firmly explain one more time the damage that her nails have and how to fix it. Whenever i have a similar situiation, i ask the client to let me finish all my filing and shaping before they point anything out, and when you finish, show them the structure and explain why it needs to be there. Usually clients are worried about the tips being too thick, so maybe try making them thinner (if possible) while still keeping a decent apex. If she still wants them thinner and refuses to listen to you after multiple attempts, then i would fire the client. Just tell her if she's not happy with your work and wants it like the chop shops, then to go back to them, there's no reason to keep coming back to you. The hassle really isnt worth the headaches, and letting go of one client won't kill your business, and you'll quickly replace that client with someone who does appreciate and love your work

    What about not wanting to do something? I don’t like doing dip. I think it’s wasteful and I just am not fond of it. I know there’s a chance of losing money by not offering it, but most clients want dip because they think it’s healthier for their nails.

    • @youngnailsinc

      If you are working for your self (renting space or have your own salon, etc) you do not have to offer every service. You can specialize in whatever services or products you choose. You may have to educate new or potential clients as to why you choose the services that you do, there are many options for nails and if done properly, you can build a steady clientele with any services.
