      Thanks so much for going to all that trouble to bring us this. I for one really appreciate it.
      A lot of people take watching videos for granted and don't really acknowledge the amount of work that it takes to produce one, so I just wanted to let you know that I respect your efforts and work.

      @@TOKYObrah It was because the timeline was massive with a range of different codecs (CRM, A bunch of S1H codecs, XAVC-S, XAVC-I, R3D, ProRes). Plus all the colour grading. Lumetri was crashing towards the end of the render. If it didn't crash 3 times it would have been a 3 hour render. Jake

    This is the 5th TH-cam review I've seen on the S1H and it is by far the best. Professional videographers should love this review.
    The Black Magic Pocket 6K seemed to perform quite well against the S1H in your tests, which is interesting considering the $1,500 price difference. But as I looked at your sample video you provided for each camera I liked the S1H the best - I thought it looked sharper and richer. But that's just me.

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      mediamannaman I think sharpness has more to do with the lens. I own both cams, but my own impression is the bm 6k has better color and the image is more organic.
      Both terrific, both with pros and cons. For instance, my S1H didn’t come with a fork lift.

    • @Stanleykubrick2
      @Stanleykubrick2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@avarmadillo organic? You mean softer. The OLPF gives the S1H an organic image and does something special to highlights.

As you said, "a full frame GH5"---true except for one thing: the color is better. Would prefer the focus peaking be better. The Fujifilm X-T4 still holds the Gold medal for focus peaking.

  • @ricardoduarte6589
    @ricardoduarte6589 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jake, jokes apart, I would really appreciate to hear from you a technical analysis on the following:
    My following thoughts are solely based on reading reviews and watching bloggers telling me all kinds of things about APS-C/FF sensors, their lenses and so on. Leaving aside camera bodies finishes, ergonomics and specs on EVFs,, menus, etc., this is what I think about how to yield an optimal IQ result from any APS-C sensor camera: use a lens engineered for FF sensors! Why? Well, it is an universal fact that ALL lenses, regardless their focus length, are curved made. As a result, the light rays passing through the outer surface of the lens tend to bend, thus deteriorate, the captured image on the flat sensor, compared to the rays passing through the central area of the lens, less curved. The farther from the real world imagery produced by a lens the more occurrence of "aberrations". Optical aberrations occur when points in the image do not translate back onto single points after passing through the lens - causing image blurring, reduced contrast or misalignment of colors (chromatic aberration). Lenses may also suffer from uneven, radially decreasing image brightness (vignetting) or distortion. Also, the wider the focal length, the more susceptible to aberrations. To minimize such inevitable events under the law of optical physics, camera manufacturers developed a number of optical counter-measures by adding ingenuous and costly engineering solutions via complex computerized experiments. Yet, none of them has, so far, zeroed the threshold balance between the real world imagery and its transportation onto digital photography sensors. Some have come close and cost a fortune. How about, then, through a simple and also ingenuous economic trick, to achieve the same similar results yielded through the above costly laboratory processes? Mount a lens meant for a full frame sensor onto a smaller one, such the APS-C. By doing this, the APS-C sensor will capture the light rays coming from the less curved surface of the FF lens, its central area, leaving out all those annoying bent rays susceptible to cause the above mentioned aberrations.
    This same thoughtful exercise of pure ancient Greek syllogism could be applied on the correlation between large to medium, medium to full frame and APS-C to Micro 4/3 formats.
    As I said in my opening remarks, all of the above is just an empirical theoretical logical exercise. Therefore, in the real world of real photographers like you, I may be completely off the track from sanity thinking.

    Really great review! You say: "The beefiest codec is C4K 10 bit 422 All-I 400Mbps downsampled". You emphasise on "downsampled". It seems to me, that ALL 4K and FHD codecs are automatically downsampled from 6K (in Full Frame and Super 35, obviously not Pixel to Pixel). Not only the 400Mbps codecs. Which is good because downsampling provides more accurate colours, sharper edges and less noise.

Sometimes only after I made a photo I see: Oh it was overexposed. But I want to see if I am over or underexposed in camera in the viewfinder. But the camera in viewfinder pretends everything is fine. @@eicarshiva You can actually use more lenses with the L mount of the S1 with a range of adaptors such as the ones I mention in this video. I agree AF is important to some people and that's why in my comment above you will see me saying that each camera has compromise and if you aren't a fan of manual focusing then this camera may not be the choice for you. I think the 6K looks to be a great option, especially at it's price, but it does have limitations and misses some of the features of the S1H. I would say the Panasonic has a lot more quality of life improvements over the BMPCC6K. Battery life is better, it has amazing IBIS, it has a more versatile screen, it shoots compressed formats internally with the option to shoot prores or prores RAW externally. It has a more versatile and modern lens mount. And of course the biggest difference is the sensor. The Panasonic has better low light performance, different colour science which is subjective but in terms of accuracy is better than the 6K and of course it's much larger than the Pocket 6K and has so so many different shooting formats. But don't get me wrong the 6K has pro's to and just depends on which ones mean more to the end user choosing. Jake

      Hi Jake, nice summary of the S1H. I have it on preordered a week ago. Also just subbed to your channel. Thanks for putting in the hard work to make this video!
      Agree with all your comments here and above. As a consumer with all the new tech, we have so many options to choose from depending on our use cases.
      I saw two YT videos last month on AF from Richard Wong and Gerald Undone showing the improvements with the new firmware update 1.2. It seems that at 60fps in both 1080 and 4k, the S1 AF matched or beat out A73. And with the current 3 native lens having parfocal, they don’t pulse when zooming which is great for sport video or similar use cases. The firmware update was able to improve the af on the S1, it’s promising for S1H and that Panasonic’s commitment to DFD might be paying off. Time will tell. May not be at Sony or Canon’s af levels or for wildlife and sports photography but good enough for video in cases where manual focus is not preferred.
      Excited to get my hands on the S1H! I have the A73 (for stills and sports) and GH5 (for videos) and will keep them until I play with the S1H. If it replaces both cams, then maybe trade it in for 4k or 6k for cinema use cases.
      Gotta love the competition and hope Sony comes back and counter with their A7s3 video centric version.
      Cheers

    how can it compete with bmpcc6k that does not have the video look ( th-cam.com/video/uPs13LN8Jbk/w-d-xo.html ) is cheaper, has far better codec and a wider lens selection (300 lenses- 118 being under $500 compared to only 50 L-mount lenses with 1 lens under $500, will FF sensor size and ibis over bmpcc6k be enough for s1h to not flop ?

    • @CVPTV
      @CVPTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both cameras have compromise. I would say the Panasonic has a lot more quality of life improvements over the BMPCC6K. Battery life is better, it has amazing IBIS, it has a more versatile screen, it shoots compressed formats internally with the option to shoot prores or prores RAW externally. Of course the biggest difference is the sensor. The Panasonic has better low light performance, different colour science which is subjective and of course it's much larger than the Pocket 6K and has so so many different shooting formats. So if you are wanting that FF look then the S1H is the way to go. Also your point about lenses is simply wrong. The fact that the S1H uses a short flange mount (L) over EF means you can mount pretty much every lens ever, that has a larger flange distance than L with an adapter, so EF, PL, M42, F/G etc... So in actual fact, you have far far more lens choices for the S1H. Like I said at the beginning every camera has pro's and con's, one shooters choice will be different to the next and in all honestly both of these cameras are brilliant in their own ways. Jake

      I think colour is subjective from an artistic perspective but if you are referring to colour accuracy I would say the Panasonic S1H is better than the Pocket 6K which are the two I tested here. Before forming an opinion on 4K vs S1 I would want to test using my methods. I don't think the clips you have linked (I only watched the first set of tests at the timestamp you linked) are a good way to judge colour accuracy when they are so stylised and I don't know the constants and how they have been processed. @@CVPTV earlier in the video he also tested color charts and you are correct s1 was more color accurate than bmpcc4k, about color i was more speaking about subjective color like a pleasant skin tone, there is the same debate in the audiophile community : do we prefer studio monitors that are flat and sound accurate, or do we prefer hifi speakers with tube amp that color sound and make it pleasant to the ears in a unique way but inaccurate, both choices are valid and are individual choices but i do not think it is a 50-50% split i believe it is more a 80-20% split in favor of unfaithful but pleasing sensations if we look at what gear people buy or photos that people like

    I had to go back to edit this. One of the best reviews on TH-cam as usual. it's your dedication and your approach to the video camera like it's a video camera. Bmpcc 4k and 6k highlight recovery is just a gimmick since it's bringing back channels that did not clip and then artificially represents them like 3 channel color. What would the comparison be if you use the same trick for Panasonic? DaVinci resolve doesn't allow that probably but there are ways to do it. Also 14 stops of dynamic range is a straight out lie-and I know that manufacturers are lie on that front all the time, but they should be at least called out for that. Varicam 35 and Lt have the same advertised dynamic range and I can guarantee you that they have three stops more than this one.

    • @SewTubular
      @SewTubular 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The website Cinema5D has a maximum dynamic range list for the cameras that they have tested, and here are the first four entries on that list...
      1- ARRI ALEXA Mini
      2- Blackmagic Ursa 4.6 Pro G2
      3- Panasonic S1
      4- Sony FS7
      ...So it would not surprise me if Panasonic is able to produce Varicam color and dynamic range with the S1H camera.
