  • This open open world do-what-you-want space game was one of the first that incorporated "high quality" FMVs (full motion video) into a video game.
And being a rather new tech, they were able to get several class A actors interested in participating!
    Clive Owen
    John Hurt
    Jürgen Prochnow
    Christopher Walken
to name a few. Excellent acting, unfortunately a bit of a lackluster script...

Clive Owen, John Hurt, Christopher Walken. That was a great cast.

      Aint that the fucking truth!!
I always wondered why they stopped doing that; at least in the early days, computer graphics just weren't up to par to create even decent looking sequences.
And GOOD actors can help you convey your story really well!

David Warner, Jurgen Prochnow, and Brian Blessed, too.

I bought this to run in DOS 6.22. Absolutely loved it. Definitely showing its age, but the cut scenes were amazing for the time.

This game is totally worth it; of course it can drag on in the middle, getting the money to upgrade to the best ship/weapons with transporting goods, but the FMVs are really great: it just does help, if you have professional actors. That's why I'm REALLY stoked about the SP campaign of Star Citizen! (if it ever comes out, that is^^)

Thanks for making this series. I'm going to enjoy watching this. There's only 1 other complete lets play of this game on youtube that I can find and the guy just skips so much stuff and makes it so hard to follow. He plays it like someone who's played the game a billion times before instead of playing it like he's showing the game to people who haven't seen it before. Whereas you actually explore the planets and view the news bulletins and play all the cutscenes. So I'm going to stick with you to show me this great old game I've never had the time to play through.

Thanks! Yep, thats what I'm trying to go for: showing everything to people who can't play the game themselves.
And although commentary can be quite fun, its also very distracting imho...

Totally; in the beginning, when technology wasn't good enough for "good" cutscenes, you had to rely on FMVs with actors. What a time...

@@ytdlder When Wing Commander III came out with Mark Hamill in 1995, and I had to get my first upgrade and double my ram, I was blown away.
I’d played and loved the first Privateer the year prior, and this the year after. Although, technologically, these games felt like they were years apart; today’s games have little progress each year. Back then, a year in gaming felt like a lifetime of advancement.

@@Y2Kr4SHM4N Not only that: in the past the companies tried new things every now and then. These days most games are refreshes with bigger maps and more chests (like all Ubisoft games, or EA games, or Avalanche games, ...).
There's hardly any "new" stuff. True, a lot has already been made several times, but esp. single player story games are a very rare treat nowadays.
And there ARE new games, like Kingdom Come Deliverance, which try something new (new fighting system, open world, but without the need to hunt for x chests and stuff)

Was the game a flop? Hiring all those actors must have been expensive. Also too much emphasis on the story line makes the game restrictive. They did same with freelancer, and I ended up deleting it after a couple of days.

    • @ytdlder
      @ytdlder  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have no idea how successful it was. It's a great effin game and the story and FMVs is what elevates this to the myriad of cheap space action games.
Plus back in the day - if you had high production value - you would have had actors. Look at Wing Commander.
