Skip popped into my head today. I used to help him with his guitars in Memphis. I considered him a friend. My family is also from DC and whenever Issac came through he would have tickets for them. On one occasion he sat my family with his at the Birchmere. He was an amazing person who would light up a room. He'd come into the store and yell, "Where's my brother from another mother?" We was talking about me. Always greeted with a hug and a smile. This interview captures that. I miss him.
Thank you Jim for posting this unreleased interview with the late great Skip Pitts. I was fortunate to see Skip perform live at the Ponderosa Stomp and discuss his career at the music conference. Mr. Pitts was a loving and generous man whose contribution to American music cannot be overstated.
I met skip in Great Yarmouth England when he played for Gene Chandler We wrote to each other after that and I finally hooked up with him at the house of blues in New Orleans A great guy Rest In Peace King of Wah Wah ❤️
For the past several days all I have been doing is watching different versions of the theme from Shaft. In my opinion quite possibly the most amazing song ever written and performed. Thank you Skip
Saw Mr Pitts perform at the 2011 Guitar Geek show in Anaheim. I was sitting on a bench outside the hall with my boots off and he walks up and says "do you mind if I sit down?" I replied,"please do. I'm just resting my feet because these boots are killing me." We then start a conversation and laughing about our feet hurting and needing a break. He asks if I'm in one of the bands playing and I said no,I'm just a fan of the music. I then introduce myself and he then says "I'm Skip Pitts. The guy that played with Isaac Hayes on Shaft." I about fell off that bench!! I then told him it was such an honor to meet him and the first album I ever bought(at age 8) was the Shaft Soundtrack and how my Mom yelled at the guy in the record store because he didn't think it was something I'd want. I will never forget his laughter from picturing an 8 year old white kid buying (and still having) that album.
Pure pleasure to hear Skip talking and blessed for seeing him play. He exhales music, joy and simplicity. Whow, he has rythm! Thanks JimDunlopUSA for posting this Old School Guitar Legend's gem that definitely influenced the "new school"! Whow
Thank you Skip Pitts for doing your part to help save and tame mankind with your gift and talent. May GOD bless your legacy and surviving family. Everyone be careful out there..
Aw, man. What a great sotry from a good man. Wish I had med him, there's no BS about him, this is a good guy x100. His guitar lines got into my head and have stayed there forever.
You pre dated Mr Wah Wah Ragin (and no slight to him)---but when I first heard the opening riff from Shaft---we hadn't heard anything like it. I was only 14 just learning guitar. Mr Pitts would go on to say that it was just a riff he was using to test his new Dunlop Cry Baby wah wah Like all musical accidents (Eddie Van Halen's botched Strat experiment) for example---these things end up in musical history for those of us who cared about what happens behind the scenes
