I am a 74 year old Vietnam Veteran, Pitts guitar work with the pedal on the Shaft LP was outstanding. He did a great memorable job. I still have the vinyl LP now. I bought me a new LP record player combination from J C Penny and the album still sounds good. I have had that vinyl album over 30 years. RIP Mr. Pitts. I hope you are in Heaven.
@horacejones.........I bought the 1971 UK 45rpm release on the Stax Record label - banana yellow in colour, with the infamous 'clicking' fingers logo displayed in a black box on the left-hand side. [This was the 'standard' 3min 15 second version]. I also bought two copies of the film soundtrack LP. But even better, and after several weeks of searching I managed to acquire the extremely rare full 4mins 34 seconds long album version 'single' 45. [This edition is lemon-yellow in colour and the 'clicking' fingers black box is replaced by a light blue one to denote the difference]. A year later, I added Joe Bataan's very creditable Latin version of the song.
@@thesoultwins72 You haven't lived until you've heard the best version of them all, Sammy Davis Jr's cover. Okay, it's not that great. But it's fun to listen to.
I met Skip in the early 1970's in Washington D.C. when we both had a lot of hair and big hats with a feather. Amazingly I saw him a day or two later play at the Kennedy Center with Isaac. Years later I saw them both again in Alexandria Va playing and looking well. They both passed after that. Good dude.
Mr. Hayes and each of the musicians scored a fully energizing and most unique sound, perfectly suited the opening scenes of SHAFT. Still so finely impressive...After more than 40 years I'm still up-lifted at a cellular & emotional level by the sound.
the Theme from Shaft ended up being a masterpiece !! Appreciate bro Skip (RIP) sharing this very enlightening behind the scene info. Thank YOU for posting it.
Rest easy Skip---genius riff. Things like this always happen by accident. You were truly original I was studying drums at age 13 when this was released. I had some guitar lessons prior. Jimi Hendrix passed and I shifted my interest to guitar. I asked my dad could he buy me a wah wah so I could attempt this. Mr Pitts is the only one that can nail it cause he originated it!!!
Dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you are bored like me atm you can watch pretty much all of the new series on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother recently xD
Good interview Skippy. I whish that you were still in the Washington DC area. Rest in peace and may Allah comfort your Nalf (soul) Dave the former bass player for TNT Tribble band.
wow I say a word and hung on every word skip I love knowing their conception of that song want to songs so too funky for my soul I start to cry the sun always makes me cry a big part of that is because of the rain guitar it really gets me going I love you so much God bless
STAX Guitarist Michael Toles was the first pro musician I met.I was in a band with his younger brother drummer Ralph and we were rehearsing at his house.M.T. showed me the Cry Baby in question...
IT'S LIKE when Marin Recorded what's going on, the horn player was warming up for the intro and the tape was rollin...when marvin said he ready, the guy said let's go Marvin said i already got what i wanted ,the rest they say is history! the hook on one if the biggest songs ever recorded..MY GIRL.. Robert White was just playing riffs just warming up..Smokey said! whats that you playing ? he said what? play what you played again..he said do that for the intro..the rest they say ! is HISTORY!! The most recognizable guitar riff of all times! Charles skip had a Robert white experience! never know when magic will happen in a recording session. SHAFT! that guitar timeless, Issac was genius off a single note of G! LOL!
I feel that THIS was the turning point for soul musics acceptance among the general populace. Before this, the white folks all just smiled and went back to Waylon. Both this song, and this movie were a seminal turning point in relations among the races. THEN we had that taken from us as, by the first ,A N D O N L Y , black president.

We're all here for such a short time and sometimes special dudes leave us too early.
Amazing how so many songs come about with musicians and singers just warming up or playing around.. love it
Show how great they are

Shout to my uncle Wah Wah Watson at the beginning of this clip and Skip!!!! 2 legends!!!!!!!!!!!
Mr. Pitts is modest -- that guitar riff became legendary.
This interview is nothing short of amazing! So great that Mr. Pitts was interviewed about one of the most iconic guitar riffs ever recorded.
FASCINATING! It's always very interesting to hear the story behind a winning performance.

This theme is my actual alarm clock notification
Fascinating musical history. Sometimes these guys have no idea what they're creating until the finished product. Then it all comes together. So cool.

I think this song started a whole new genre! I dunno - but I heard a lot of copycat wah playing after that. Props to Skip for hitting on that.
