  • Repair of my (likely) Canadian-winter damaged Hyundai Sonata 2012 LE Rear View Cam
    I do electronics repair as a hobby and thought I could tackle this little project. It was time consuming but fun. In twenty years I expect this to be the only of this type of car with a working camera.
    I do repairs for others aswell sometimes, should anyone be interested leave me a message

    Great video, very helpful. I just repaired mine this video heled a great deal. Just a few suggestions removing the chrome trim was tricky (or seemed it the first time) suggest plastic trim remove tools. The camera has 2 circuit boards as shown in this video. Once the 2 screws and spacers have been removed the top board can be wiggled side to side to separate it from the lower board. Also suggest using silicone seal on the exterior joints.

    Thanks for the great video. I fixed my camera. I don't think I would have thought to try this if I had not seen the video. My camera was on a newer Santa Fe but the concept was no different. One suggestion, I slathered any of the areas that water might get in with silicon sealer before I reinstalled the camera.

    Would have been nice to see how you disassembled the trunk and took the metal off

      See @pococks1
      's comment. Its just plastic trim that looks like chromed metal that you can remove with a spudger

      Theres a felt like cover inside trunk you remove to expose 2 gray silverish colored nuts on the underside of the inside of you trunk that you must remove in order to pry the chrome strip off.

    My Santa Fe camera stopped working about 1.5 years ago, so I thought I'd try to repair it as in your video. Unfortunately, I had three rusted circuit board screws and a corroded pin on one of the connectors. When two of the screws snapped off at the lens housing, I decided to bin it and order a new one as the prices have come way down since I last checked. When that arrives, I'll open it and use silicone board sealer with a good helping of Collinite 845 on the outside to prevent a repeat performance.

    I have a 2013 Sonata 2.0T. After 7 years of perfect service the camera croaked. Sure enough, so badly corroded I could not even get the screws out to separate the front form the back half of the assembly. An OEM replacement camera is available for $125USD from a seller in China. You’ll wait a month for it to arrive. Didn’t have that kind of time so grudgingly had the dealer fix it for $585USD. That hurt.

      I'm sorry to hear, that sucks. At least you got a genuine replacement part. But all of these cameras will eventually fail, unfortunately, due to poor design. Its a type of service done preventative that would be best here

    I just saw your video. I had a backup light go out on my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe in 2018. I ordered a replacement from Amazon and it worked. Well the second one went out. So I need to replace it. I kept the one I removed. Would you be interested taking apart the original and see if you can rebuild? David

    My camera is working, but it looks like water has gotten 'inside' the glass lens, dried and left dirty sediment on the inside. Then when it's in reverse, it's all blurry.
    Before I go to the trouble of striping it all down, do you think the lens can be separated from the camera body, to clean the inside of the lens. (I'd probably clean off any oxidisation on the boards at the same time, but that won't solve the issue I'm facing)

      I'm in the same boat here, couldnt figure out a way to get the outside lens apart from the housing without doing something that would seemingly bust it, but when the board with the camera on it was off I attempted to use a Qtip with some of the padding pulled away to try and wipe the lens, no avail :-(

      @@walterhartman8902 I've still not bothered stripping mine down yet (didn't have time over summer with vacations etc).
      But it sounds like the answer to my original question was no, the glass lens isn't able to be separated.
      When you say you didn't manage with a qtip, was there some space to get 'something' in there or was it completely sealed?
      If there was some space I'd maybe give it a try.
      Else, going to try a replacement from wish or Alibaba...cheaper than the dealer 😮

    Can you suggest a vehicle with a decent back up camera system that doesn’t die like Hyundai’s? Thanks. 😊

    Thanks for the video I have the exact same issue. Will try this fix. Where do you get this conformative coating?

    • @klefftech
      @klefftech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Conformal coatings can be found easily online on eBay or amazon, and a little goes a looong way. In a pinch you could also use clear nail polish

    I changed my battery and now my screen doesn't come on at all. Fortunately, my radio does work, however the radio and media buttons do not work. How do I get my screen back on and working? Is there a reset code for Sonata 2012 Limited?

    what do you do if you have the black screen?

    • @klefftech
      @klefftech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely a dead camera module/assembly. You can try the procedure in the video but your best bet is to just buy a new one, sorry

      the chrome trim.. yes its a pain. I broke a couple tabs doing it...

    • @briandrew2689

      Take of the black felt cover in underside of trunk exposing 2 gray nutts on underside of trunk then you can pry the chrome strip off

    I have a 2011 Elantra limited with navigation. I noticed when I put it in reverse the camera screen was gray granular could it be totally bad the camera or the computer

    • @klefftech

      Likely corrupt video feed because of corrosion in the camera.. you would have to do the procedure like in the video and open up your camera to really know

    I’m getting a black screen with no line overlay, it was “scrambled” now it’s just black with no lines. Any thoughts?

      Yeesh.. I’d have to see it to really have an idea but my instincts say something coulda fried in the head unit on the receiving end.. Care to post an image link?

      Yeah get ready for your dashboard sensor lights to go crazy sooner or later and your RPM/MPH gauges will be effected to so when that happens just disconnect the camera!
