Pete Sampras vs Andre Agassi | US Open 1990 Final

  • Pete Sampras against Andre Agassi. The biggest server in the game against the best returner of his generation. The proverbial irresistible force against the immovable object.
    Sampras came into the tournament as the No. 12 seed, having missed the French Open and losing in the first round of Wimbledon for the second year in a row.
    Agassi, seeded fourth and known for his blistering return game, was contesting his second major final of the season after a run to championship Sunday in Paris in May. He had made the semifinals of the US Open in both 1988 and 1989 and, like Sampras, was looking for his first Slam crown.
    But despite a hectic hard-court season and a string of grueling matches to reach the final in New York, Sampras, just 19 years old, seemed anything but fatigued against Agassi, a man who had crushed him on clay in Rome the previous year.

    Sampras certainly pushed the game to the next level- he was a cut above McEnroe, Connors, and Lendl. No one (including Pete) ever thought that his record haul of grand slams would be so swiftly and decisively overtaken by Federer, Nadal, and Novak. You can never predict the future.

    Listening to the commentary you really start to feel the environment of this match. Since turning pro, Andre had always been “the chosen one”. Pete was just a promising kid with a big serve. In this match, you can see just how impressed the tennis world was when Pete popped ace after ace and never even smiled or frowned. Beginning of a new era in tennis

    I watched this live, didn't know Pete was a legend in the making. I was an Agassi fan, and thought Pete was a showoff with his jumping in the air, and slamming the ball thing. LOL! Turns out, this is one of the most quiet and humble champion ever. At all their peaks, including Federer, Nadal and Joker... I'll still take Pete Sampras because none of them can serve like Pete. If he's on, you're not returning the ball. Agassi is one of the greatest returners in history, and he just toyed with him.

      It wasn't the golden age at all. Sampras started to get big as of 1993. That was the time when players like Lendl, McEnroe, Becker, Edberg, Wilander, etc had either already retired or were on the decline.

    • @dustierbottoms
      @dustierbottoms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@luperamos7307 Sampras started to dominate in 93. But this win was the start of his rise. Lendl, mac, and wilander were definitely past their primes in 93, but Becker and Edberg should’ve been in the middle of their primes (mid to late 20s). Some would argue this young crop of American players were the reason why Becker and edberg didn’t win more. Chang broke thru the scene first by winning the French in 89. Even though he never won again, he was a consistent top 5 player for a decade. Courier was next winning a bunch of titles in between, but once Sampras got rolling in 93, he was hands down the most dominant. This was the golden age of sports for many. US mens tennis was arguably the best it’s ever been, Jordan’s bulls, and the niners dominated the NFL. Lol

    • @luperamos7307
      @luperamos7307 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dustierbottoms Edberg really didn't have the results anymore as of 93 and went downhill as of 94. The results show that. Becker still hung around, but he was always a little on the heavy side. He got rid of coaches bc he felt that they had too much say and I feel that he didn't have the right work ethic anymore. A big reason was also that bigger servers like Sampras and Ivanisevic came along as racket technology and surfaces basically ensured that the big servers would dominate. That is also why I didn't like the 90s.

    Sampras became the first great allcourt player in a long time. The players were either great from the baseline (Lendl, Wilander, Chang), or great at the net (McEnroe, Edberg, Becker).
    Sampras could go toe to toe with the best serve and volleyers, and could crush the best baseliners from the back court. Great serve, volley, and groundstrokes. One of the best "clutch" servers in the business.
    Only on clay he was vulnerable, in great part because of thalassemia that affected his stamina.

      On the same court they played this match on I favour Sampras against both of them as he will overpower them. Breaking Pete on this is so hard, which means he has carte blanche to fire away at your serve until he cracks it. Federer is the best bet against him on this surface. Court type has such a big influence when it comes to these great players. Sampras would be torn apart by all 3 on slow surfaces.

    I still honestly believe that Sampras would come out on top, had he played in the same era with Fed, Rafa and Nole, even without the 90’s fast surfaces. He has the best serve among them by far and the best volley. They all have equally great forehands. Pete’s backhand drive is the worst among the four but his backhand slice is the best to save him.

      Pete’s racquet was heavy before modification, then more weight was added. I have the same one and it is hefty indeed bone stock. Flat shots are hard to hit as it is tiny, but has crazy weight, thing is a cannon. Pete’s was apparently into the 14 + ounce range. That weight combine with long flowing stokes that are low/flat made for some blistering shots. Also allowed for great touch with the serve volley style off play. Try it however in a high level quick doubles, one needs to be Hercules.
      Some one calculated Pete’s (85 sq inch) racquet is about 60% more difficult to use than Agassi’s (107 sq inch) and at that using a one handed back hand was again considerably more difficult to use, goes to show Pete was certainly something extraordinarily special. Definitely GOAT material.

      If they showed the whole match and build up, you would have heard Tony Trabert describe the court as "medium slow". That might have made your jaw drop. Personally I think Arthur Ashe Court in the late 1990s was considerably faster than this Armstrong court.

      @@thanghoang3198 I'm paraphrasing what Trabert said here. He said that the court is slow enough to help the baseliners but if you attack you can get a reward. So in his opinion it was ideal for a championship like the US Open. During this era different types of players won the US Open unlike Wimbledon where only serve volleyers won bar Agassi in 1992. So, I think Trabert makes a good observation about the court.
      Lendl, eight finals and three times a winner, Wilander in 1988, Becker in 1989, Agassi demolished Stich in 1994. Different styles of play for all guys.

    The US Open 1990 was the time where Björn Borg held the record for 11 Grand Slams. Sampras won the US Open 1990 which was his first Grand Slam. At the time people didn't expect that Sampras would break Borg's record and that after Sampras' retirement Federer, Nadal and Đoković will appear who will break Sampras' record and manage to win 20 Grand Slams. At the time of the US Open 1990 Agassi was 20, Sampras 19, Federer 9, Nadal 5 and Đoković 4.

Given Sampras proved a 20 year old Agassi was still a bit vulnerable to great serve and volley, Mac could have won this Open.

    I remember watching this match thinking - this is easily the best tennis player I've ever seen. I couldn't believe he beat Lendl - who had been to the final 8 straight years. Lendl played well - didn't matter. Then, in the pressure cooker atmosphere - he beat McEnroe. And, McEnroe played fantastic posting his best service performance I can remember. Didn't matter. And then, he did this to Agassi - who didn't play his best, but who could. This was Pete's day. Near perfect tennis.
