Great demo, Colwin. I trained to be a high school shop teacher in the 1970s and was fortunate to have a college professor that traveled through East Germany and "collected" these types of traditional crafts and brought them back to the US to share with his classes. Thank you, Conrad Johnson!!
That's very cool, I've never seen the craftsmen doing this in Germany, as I am usually so fascinated by the Black Forest Carvers in Garmish . . . now I will have to look for those who are doing this kind of work . . . Merry Christmas to All !
I read about this technique many years ago and wished there were diagrams. I thought about it for weeks until i properly understood how the little Noah's ark animals were made, and wished i could see them being made. I came across this video tonight by chance and was transfixed through the whole process, so satisfying, thank you. (And then i realised it was also Axminster tools who sent the amazing tools to Dan Preston at Chateau de Chaumont, well done.)
Well done Collin! You’ve been promising this for a few years and you finally made it. Visited Herr Werner”s workshop in Seifen last year and saw his amazing work. Yours looks just as good. Merry Christmas from Hull in Yorkshire
This is truly an Intriguing art form. l love the explanation and the results. Good job. The key seems to be to start with a simple yet interesting design.
I have done similar, and some more complicated. Instead of using the separate templates I cut a thin ply outline then make a 90 degree cut from the outside towards the centre, tight fit to the ply. This is glued in an then you simply wood away the waste. Keep stopping to check when you get close.

You have to go to a place called Seiffen. There is an open_air museum, where they show this type of hoop-turning. But have to study German language.
Great demo good to see the master in action , you have been talking about doing this for quite a while . Well done again
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!

Nice project. Great to see you back Colwin, thought you emigrated to Australia 😮
It was nice to have Colwin back for a festive special. He is very much still in England!
