    I like the sensor suite. That’s going to make a huge difference for S&R.

      I completely agree. It's kind of a travesty that it's taking so long for the SAR community to get such sensors. I've often joked that news channel helicopters have more sensor capability than RCAF SAR aircraft do at the moment! But there is good news -- the CH-149 Cormorant is getting a mid-life upgrade that will give it a lot of sensor capability; and I've chat with sensor operators for the CC-295 and they have said the sensors are amazing, so that's great to hear. I am confident they will make a big difference once operational.

    The sencor suite could have been put of any aircraft. I bet those wheel pants get torn off on the first gravel runway

    This purchase made no sense IMHO, when the C-27J was available and had so much commonality with the C130J Hercules you already had in service, the variant of this aircraft that would have been very useful was the AC295 gunship with added ISR equipment, this pocket gunship would have helped immensely when the CAF was deployed in Afghanistan patrolling routes and convoy escort as well as gunship support.

      The size of the C-27J would definitely have been better suited for all the SAR equipment that needs to be carried, and the commonality with the C-130J would have been advantageous for sure.

    This maybe a naive question, Why would we buy from Airbus when we own De Havilland and the Dash 8

      Very legitimate question, lowest bidder as usual. Creating defence and aviation job shall be priority number one. I remember a an air defence system that the missiles came from Switzerland. Pretty useless during the golf war.

      Dash 8 didnt have a cargo ramp, and it was a deal breaker. Our sartech need a ramp to safely jump from aircraft.

      @@dann2284 Exactly right. A ramp is key.

    I'm no expert at all; however, I heard these things are nowhere near close to ready. In fact I heard they're not 100% sure if they will ever be serviceable.
    Weren't there major issues with Wait distribution, underpowered and issues with cold weather?

      There's lots of rumors about the CC-295. I just interviewed the Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and I asked him about the status of the CC-295. According to him, it is making progress and it will be Canada's fixed-wing SAR aircraft. You can hear the chat as Episode 67 of the "Go Bold with Joetey Attariwala" podcast... it's free and available on all the major podcast platforms. We cover a lot, so I hope you have a listen 🙂

    Another example of what happens when Ottawa procures the equipment instead of letting our soldiers, sailors and aircrews obtain the equipment that actually works for their needs, the rear doors cannot be opened in flight because of serious stability issues so it is essentially useless for para rescue drops, basically all we have done is waste a shit ton of money on a completely useless platform that is probably going to be relegated to freight hauling 😢

      That's why there is a jump door on the side, like most aircraft of this type

      @@viper29caIt's not just people parachuting from these aircraft. One of their main roles is to drop survival equipment to survivors on the ground/water.
      For example, if a ship is sinking far out at Sea. This thing will reach them before the helicopters, obviously they can't land to rescue anybody. So they would drop survival equipment through the cargo ramp. They won't be able to do that if the Ramps not working.
      Furthermore, I could be wrong on this but I'm pretty sure I'm right. Another major issue is they're underpowered. They don't climb very quickly. Which one you're flying low in mountainous terrain with very bad visibility, The ability to quickly climb is crucial from avoiding smashing into a mountain.
      Apparently the issues are so bad. The military isn't even guaranteeing they will ever be in service.

      @@viper29ca You can drop smaller items out of the side door. The idea of Buying a new aircraft is to make life easier and to be more future proof.
      Theoretically, almost any plane could do the job. It's about picking the right aircraft for the job. Clearly, Canada did not. I could open up a moving company with an SUV, but a truck would work better.

      @@dodoDodo-of6pu any survival equipment is going to be compacted to be able to drop out that door. The door is quite a bit bigger than a person. You could shove a sizeable couch out that door fairly easy, pretty sure survival gear won't be an issue.

    Why couldn't they have ordered new Dehavilland Buffalo with modernized avionics. They were the best aircraft for SAR!

    • @goboldwithjoeteyattariwala
      @goboldwithjoeteyattariwala  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Viking Air had an interesting proposal for a modernized version of the Buffalo, which was called the Buffalo NG (Next Generation). It would have had new engines and pressurized the cockpit. It would have been a cool solution, and frankly, the performance and capability would have been awesome IF it came to be.

    • @dann2284
      @dann2284 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @roymanzini2521 The CC-115 buffalo airframe was out of age. No upgrades was possible. So, the Viking solution was to create a brand new aircraft based on the buffalo. This means research and development, testing, certification, and a solution way more expensive than buying the C-295 or C-27J.
