    Good video. I like to verify a gun is accurate with good/expensive pellets, then start testing with cheap pellets. I've gotten lucky a few times, where my rifle likes a specific cheaper pellet at 35 yards. That being said, I've also had it where the first tin of cheap pellets does well, but every other tin after that was not good.

    Did my own test with spitfire's cheap pellets and webley powapell's and got the same results powapell's tight groups every time cheaper pellets random hits.
    I have subscribed as this guy obviously knows his stuff.
    I have only just started out and all the advice given has helped my shooting and saved me loads of time and money.
    Many thanks

    Good review. The best pellet for the price is the rws superdome they are accurate well made and are not to costly. All the expensive pellets do perform better than the cheap ones. Just make sure your rifle suits them. It does depend what you are doing with then though. If you want them for hunting or target then you want the best but if you are can bashing and plinking then the cheap ones will do. My friend some times shoots 500 pellets per day (no lie). He only shoots tin cans ect with a cheap springer. So the cheap ones are fine for him. Cheap pellets are cast and expensive pellets are swaged into a fine die. This makes them perfect and perfectly sized ect. Keep up the good work matey.

    The horizontal stringing you are seeing it typically due to inconsistent breath control and elevated heart rate. A strong pulse will push the stock over and string them every time. I would try again an focus on good breathing, heart rate and trigger control. Great review. Really enjoying your stuff. I think your channel will do well.

      you looked rock steady . it is variation in pellet wieght for lateral poi shift in an unwieghed tin it cn be up to a grains difference, at the same time varying head size . see vhtv for a vid on the subject . good luck . Also u have a left to right breeze . could explain the horizontal ;-)

    Steve,
    I was very supprised by the result. Com ing back into airgunning after 20 years away, I'm re learning. Had my share of weihrauch's and bsa's back in the day. Back then Elet wasps were pretty good. But we used to use the English 5.56mm size in the German 5.5 barrel. This always worked very well and ensured a good gas seal. The 5.56 wasps also worked very well in the Bsa Stuzen which was my last sign giving sub 1 inch groups at about 30 yards for hunting rabbits. Maybe the quality has gone, but I do remember the pellets use to be lighter in colour and shine more. Regards.

    • @airgunology
      @airgunology  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ben, this was just an example to show how important pellet selection is with rifles. Those wasps may work better with a "tighter" barrel. But in general, the more expensive the pellet (within reason) the better. What is important is to test many and select.

    Good test! I launched my body weight in Eley Wasps as a kid through my knackered BSA Supersport in .22 - I seem to remember them having a blue lid back then.
    My Daystate AirWolf absolutely loves Bisley Magnums in .177, which are kinda cheap to middle of the road price wise. Have to use long(ish) pellets because the magazine jams with shorter ones. But that said, I have other rifles that don't like them at all, couldn't hit a bull in the arse with bizmags through my Scorpion. Brand wise I'd say my favourite would probably be H&N.

    I recently changed from a Crosman Hollowpoint in .22 (14.3gr) to an H&N Field Target Trophy (14.66gr). As you have shown the finish, consistent molding, and certainly the increase in accuracy are marked. I spent hours each day trying to zero and not knowing what else I could do to bring my groups with the Trail NP2 down in size. I ended up chasing my tail and blowing off shooting in frustration. Now I check zero on the rifle and very rarely have to adjust, mostly just for weather and wind. I wasn't upset with the Hollowpoints, getting 2" groups of 5 at 28 yards, but I can halve that with the H&Ns.

    • @airgunology
      @airgunology  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is amazing but there are people out there with bad quality pellets that are not consistent in their shape or finish but swear blind they work well in their rifle. Simple physics says it won't, but hey oh, if they are happy. Glad it worked out for you.

    • @richjageman3976

      I have a Trail NP2 myself and the H&N Terminator 16.36 group near 1.5 inches at 30 yards. Switching to Superpoint Extra Fieldline 14.5 my groups are closer to 1 inch. I think the shape affects group sizes as well from my experience.

    The Daisy .22 and .177 Hollow Points are very cheap but are now made in Spain and are very similar to the Gamo Red Fire without the polymer tip. They hold less than 1” at 50 yards which with their shape and BC of 0.018 makes them perfect for 50 yards or less and very backyard friendly. They expand violently on impacts and humanely take critters instantly. They perform well up to 900 FPS in my PCPs and even better at lower speeds. The lead is soft which with the large and deep hollow point expand reliability every time. They are NOT a replacement for a good JSB pellet in terms of accuracy by no means but they are a good economical pellet with good accuracy with a limited range of the average backyard. 7$ for 500 pellets a tin on Amazon in .22 and the .177 are like 4$ for 500. The pointed Daisy pellets are not the same by any way shape or form and have NEVER had any luck with them in any gun I own. Only the Daisy 15.4 grain Hollow Points made in Spain. The picture on the tin of the pellet is not what they look like at all and are what they used to be like when made in China. Pull the tip out of a Gamo Red Fire and you have a Daisy Hollow Point, same weight exactly. The Red Fire with the tip weighs 15.8 and without the polymer tip weighs 15.4. They are one in the same I believe just one has a tip and one doesn’t. Give them a try, for 7$ why not get some cheap trigger time with decent accuracy and performance. Your welcome. Thank you for the video and what you do for our shooting community. Much appreciated. Matching a pellet with a speed with a rifle barrel is trial and error but this find for me was just luck. I use these even in my SK-19 and even on full auto at 50 yards will hold a 1” group with a full magazine of 19 on my Caldwell Lead Sled. 900 FPS is about as fast as I can push them before I start to get flyers. Thanks again and take care.

    Excellent video, it really shows the difference in accuracy with cheap pellets. Funny thing though; my RWS 460 springer is super accurate with RWS supermag pellets, but terrible with cheap crosman pellets. However, my crosman 2100 is very accurate with the cheap crosman pellets and it's inaccurate with RWS pellets. Target range is 25 yards. Weird but it's true! I investigated this and discovered the bore diameter of the RWS 460 is .1775 at the breech and .1765 at the crown, so its tapered! The crosman 2100 bore is .1775 all the way through.

    • @airgunology
      @airgunology  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, the major thing is it depends on the rifle. But once you find a good pellet, look for one that is the same and more expensive and try them and you may get even better results due to quality control. Not always the case, but usually you get what you pay for.

      Same for me, the main 3 airguns in my collection that I enjoy shooting lately fortunately all took a liking to JSB jumbo heavy 5.52 head diameter. (HW97K, Gamo Coyote, Marauder pistol).
      But I do have one or two tins of all of the following: H&N FTT (5.53, 5.54, 5.55), H&N Baracuda Match (5.51, 5.52, 5.53), JSB Jumbo (5.51, 5.52), etc. Its usually the first thing I do when I get a new rifle, clean the barrel put a few through and try some groups with that selection. It gives me an impression of what weight and head size I should aim for, in addition to that measuring the velocity consistency with a chrony is a big help too.
      Beyond that I've also got leftovers of quite a few other things I've tried over the years, comes in handy at times but mostly they sit in a box at the attic.

    For hunting I always use a premium pellet like h&n or jsb , if I'm just looking to put lead down range plinking I use milbro Caledonian. If you haven't tried them, get a sample from eBay. Quite surprising. At 15 yards they group single hole through my theoben. At 50 yards they hit new potatoes every time. I've also tried them in two different springers and a c02 rifle with good results out to 30 yards. I was a pellet snob before I tried these.

    I watch allot of these videos about not using cheap pellets and they always give me a good laugh because I have shot pellet guns for about 40 years and have found that for practical use there is not enough difference between the pellets to matter most people are only interested in back yard plinking and and not long distance marksmanship so for that most any pellet will do. 😎
    My advice is get the ammo that you want to use expensive or cheap set your sights with that ammo and you will do just fine, Enjoy! 😎😎😎😎

    I'm surprised by the amount of snobbery with pellets. I recently purchased a second hand .22 Milbro Explorer for ratting near our bowling green. The Guy gave me half a tin of Spitfire pointed pellets which after zero-ing in consistantly gave five shot groups about the size of a 5p coin (18mm) at 10mtrs. I've not tried them at greater distances as the rats are used to bowlers being in close proximity but the Explorer seems to like them.

    Interesting test. I would have expected better results at 25 yds, but there was a consistent low performance trend with the Wasps. I wonder how much of that variance is related to the head diameter. Finding the right pellet can sometimes be a matter of finding a pellet that consistently has the right diameter for a given barrel.

      @airgunology  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always the best thing to try and be scientific with your tests where it is possible. The problem with springers is that you have to be a good shot and know how to hold and aim the springer to ensure you are getting true results. Hopefully you know the artillery hold method for springers as this is key to accuracy and pellet selection with springers.

    i find bisley practice pellets are alright, especially for semi-automatic rifles and pistols. seem to cycle better, the weights are consistant & unless you're buying old stock with dented tins, you'll typically get very few that have any sort of damage.

    I’ve had a problem today. Used the last 40 from one tin of jsb exact 4.52 and fine. opened a new tin just bought at the range and honestly they were everywhere😳 some you could see swerve left right up or down about 4 inch spread. I had 4 pellets left of the original ones and when tried they were spot on again. Another guy tried them in hw100 and they were all over but in airarms hft 500 they were good 😳😳😳
    I’ll go get some more tomorrow from the original shop, I’m hoping these were a bad batch or one unsuitable for my rifle. I hope it’s not rifle problems 😳😳😳

      All comes down to the rifle and the pellet match. If you have a good match then all good, if not, swap. It is always advisable to check other and more expensive pellets even if you think you have a good match. It may be even better.

      Where i live crossman domed pellets can be found in every big box and hardware store.
      I have bought several thousand of them on clearance when stores went out of business.
      They shoot pretty well in most of my guns.
      I just shoot them in each gun to see how far out i can shoot a one inch group.
      Even a poor gun will do if i can get close enough.

    You get what you pay for,, up to a point. After that point, you pay for the name, exorbitant profit, exorbitant advertising, ect...
    Uniformity is what you should pay for. And that is where accuracy is. That is to say, after you find the right weight and shape for your rifle.
    I hope this helps someone. ...

      For a short time in the 1980s Crossman rifled the barrel in the 760 and they were fabulously accurate. The 1983-9? rifled 760 worked great with pellets or BBs, cheap or match grade. We could bring down small birds on the wing, like sparrows, at will. It was tremendously fun! I bought a late 1960s 760 and it's awful. I rebuilt it, and can't hit the broad side of a barn, from inside the barn. It's a horrible smooth bore gun. We could work well out past 100 yards, even 200 yards with the rifled 760s. The smooth bore will barely work at 15 yards.

      I will send you the weight measurements of some pellet brands soon, I am sure the cheapos have a big scatter in weight, shape or both.

    @lordhill1108 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now I'm going to wade in on this one.
    Firstly you forgot to mention that Air Rifles can be Pellet picky. It is always best to try out a good selection of pellets, both cheap and not so. To find the best for your gun.
    Way back in the late 80's I won many FT comps, with a HW80 and the old Eley Wasps (Blue Tin). It shot better with these cheap pellets than the top of the range pellets of the day. Today I shoot a HW100 and I found the best out of that rifle is the Logun Penetrator 16gr. (now getting harder to find)
    So before people go rushing out and spending money on the most expensive pre lubed and washed pellets on the market. Start cheap and work your way up. Try differant weights of the same brand, and sizes (pellets in .22cal can range from 5.45 to 5.6) The old Wasps Blue Tin 5.6mm, Pink Tin 5.5mm.
    Micro rifled barrels tend to like the smaller sizes and the deeper rifled barrels tend to favor the larger. Most PCPs will do better with a heavy pellet, and springers, lighter.
    Still a good vid showing that not all pellets the same. But no two rifles are the same also.

      @@airgunology That would be a fantastic idea. A proper Video on finding the best pellet for you Rifle. Everything from getting a selection of pellet testing packs form places like EBay, leading the barrel, right on to long range testing,(How a pellet may group well at 20yds but could give you an 8" spread at 40yds). You could even make it a multi part series. Ending in how to inspect, weigh, wash, lube and size your pellets for max accuracy.

    Interesting test and comments, Cheap pellets most people will scream NOOOOOO and they would be right for most rifle applications however they DO have a good point, After a certain amount of time with any pellet used your rifle will start to lose accuracy, some try different pellets when at the end of the day its just the Barrel that needs cleaning. Obvioulsy after cleaning your rifle needs to bed in again before accuracy returns so we do whats called "Leading the Barrel".
    Now if you wish to use your £13 Tin of Sovereigns thats up to you, However having a Tin of the cheaper pellets handy will keep the cost down. Leading the Barrel means filling all the imperfections inside your barrel, minute potholes etc. (after 100 or so shots then return to your barrels pellet of choice).
    When testing pellet brands you need to fire at least a dozen shots before firing a grouping shot, your barrel needs to adjust to the different lead. dont just fire five or so shots straight after using a different brand and expect a tight group. Some say you need to clean the barrel between brands that is up to personal choice. Anyway hope these comments are of some help to yourself and any new shooters out there,
    Regards

    A blast from my past. Having an engineering eye from a young age I did think the milbro pellets in cardboard boxes were very poor in shape and accuracy. Hell I did not know I was just a kid. Then I found eley wasp pellets. Wow awesome they were and very well made. Looking at tins of modern day wasps they are looking very poor. In 1982 they were my favorite pellet and shot well from my free donated air rifle
    Then a big 14th birthday and I got a feinwerkbau 124 sport in .22 cal and the wasps worked well. Tried h and n hunting pellets . Wow how lucky was I in those days to save for a tin of those. Yes I thought they were ace with the pointed hunting pellets
    I still have a tin of the good old eley pellets and they shot ok to be fair and better than the pointed h and n old day pellets
    Gone are the days of trying to glue fishing wire to broken scopes for a crosshair. You may laugh but I have done it and bagged many rabbits and pests until I got my fwb sport with a proper scope
    Now I am still using airguns rifles and shotguns but my all time go out to hunt gun is an air rifle
    Many years on and I now can afford what I need and I only use jsb pellets. They don't look as shiney and as nice as some other pellets but they are so accurate and consistent
    Big learning curve from day 1. The big difference is the cost. The .30 cal pellets and gun I choose are not cheap but after 20,000 shots or more the gun is fine touch wood but the pellets could be cheaper lol

It's hard to say if they are more accurate than the Superdomes, If they are, it's only by the merest smidgeon. good vid steve , interesting as well . spent a lot of money testing pellets in the last few years " indeed " my mrs remarked at one stage that I change my pellets more often then me Y fronts ( too younger readers " Y " fronts are a type of under garment that old blokes keep wearing till there wives steal them from the bedroom floor and chuck em in the washer before you get too put them on, typically for the 7th day on the trot ) so ... the pellets of choice now are ... FX Typhoon .22 I use the jsb jumbo RS ( 13.4 grn ) a light pellet considering its called a " jumbo "
    in my BSA R10 .177 I use the well established Bisley Magnum 10.64 grn ( 4.52 ) excellent pellet .. no cheap though
    in my BSA Goldstar SE .177 I use which I consider too be the most excellent pellet ever made in .177 caliber .. ok ok the rifle is top notch but the pellet is total quality @ 10.24 grn .. ( looks exactly like the jsb exact diablo 10.34 , trust me there IS a difference )
    ps may have got the pellet grns a bit wrong , but im doing it from memory , aint going upstairs too check , the mrs is up there and might want passion .. and footies comming on the telly..oh ... the pellets used in Goldstar are the Daystate .177H ( 10.24 grn )

    On the other hand, you can obtain EXPENSIVE pellets that would still give you a headache. Couple of days ago I bought RWS Power Bolt pellets (150 pieces in a box), advertised as "extremely efficient", "retaining power on long distances" and blah blah... Yeah, yeah, but no one told me that these 0.92 gram bastards WONT BLOODY FIT into the barrel (they seem to be slightly thicker than cal.177/4.5 mm) SO BOTH of my airguns - Norica Spider (10 Joules) and Baikal (7.5 Joules) "choked" on these pellets - I had to push the pellets down the barrel for a millimeter or two to make the guns able to discharge. Luckily, the unsuccessful first attempts did not distorted the sealing gaskets... Mind you: I have never had such problems with ANY other pellets, being the cheapest "no name" ones or Crossman's and Gamo's like hollow point, hunter etc. so it DEFINITELY is not a specific air gun model related...

      I can dislike this because it's comparing apples to oranges. He's not just comparing cheap to expensive, but comparing different mass pellets. A heavier pellet will give better grouping as long as the gun can handle it, otherwise not. What he *should* have done, IMO, is find the best weight for each gun, and then compare pellets of exactly that weight. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot. So, thumbs down.

    I have a rm8 177 and I have tested 30 top brands of pellets I my rifle and the only ones I found that were giving me very good grouping, was the crosman ultra magnums at 10.5gns yes pellet on pellet at 40m , now when I first started shooting I was 7 and now I am 59 and then I had a hw35, and all I used was milbro Caledonian pellets and these were great in the hw35 so the other day I bought a tin of milbro Caledonian pellets in 177, that's all I have fired is 177 so I put them in the mag of my rm8 and wow at 30m I was getting pellet on pellet so now my rm8 likes them, so there only £5 a tin so to say do not buy cheap pellets is wrong I have and it all depends what your rifle likes the daystate pellets were bloody awful in my rm8 you should be saying go to pell pax and get a sample pack and you get over 20 sample packs to try and get, a good one for your rifle its even cheaper the spending between £14 to £20 per tin as the sample pack is £20 delivered to your door

Do this mean the actual make and model of rifle will be best suited to a make and type of pellet, or does it mean that regardless of what make and model your rifle is that ever single rifle will be best suited to it's own individual make of pellet?

    Point well taken my friend... cheap ammo isnt always the best. I have a Gamo Raptor... in which i have used Winchester rounds, gamo red fires, and now h&n hornets. The red fires work really good, but the h&n hornets are flat out AWESOME!! As far as the Winchester rounds go... are they related to the Wasp rounds in your video??? Because are absolute JUNK!!!

      Many people make do with cheaper pellets and say they work with terrible groupings. That was the point of the video.
