Me too, i have replicated that top shot many times. What is annoying me most having watched this video is that it should have been obvious to me! Instead i just kept on repeating the same rubbish shot. How stupid am I? (Don’t answer that)

You confirmed what I had to learn the hard way. Topping a fairway wood was normal. But one day after watching a chart of the path of a driver up to a teed ball I was puzzled about the other fairway woods, why do we then play them forward also without a tee? Didn't make sense. Then I put them in the middle of my stance and problem solved. Wish I would have had this advice 40 years ago. :)

Very clear explanation yet is contrary to what other You Tube Pros advocate. I've seen some, like you, who say forward of middle while others say the ball should be in line with the left armpit. I've tried both and I'm more towards left chest. My conclusion is ball position is influenced by my swing. I tend to be steep in the downswing and "middle" pops the ball up, while more forward enables a much better ball flight/distance. So isn't the position dependant on each golfers down/through swing?
Clay, the beard👍 Will check that out - until now I preferred to play the ball on the front, somewhere between iron and driver. But it is worth trying .... 🏌️🏌️

Excellent explanation. I couldn't hit a 3 Wood off the ground for years and simply stopped trying, until I stopped thinking it was just me not be able to do it, and realizing that I had to just find the bottom of my swing arc with that club (as well as with all the others), and play the ball from there. I was shocked to find out how far back I needed to move that ball back in the stance.

What’s your ball position when teeing off with a 3 wood?
First of all, didn't recognize you. Secondly, I was just hitting my 3 wood like crap at the range yesterday, always thought ball should be forward. Gonna try this position once the snow melts here in Vancouver.

Straight down from the lead ear or a ball forward of that is usually a pretty good place. You can play it further up if you have a lie where the ball is sitting up like it's on a tee. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Yeah, if you're hitting it off of a tee then you can hit up on it and launch it. You can tee it up similar to how you would with a driver. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

So are you saying the ball position for every club except the driver should be close to the middle of stance. I assume that if you use a 3 wood to tee off you can put that up in your stance like the driver.
Hi Keith, if you really want to simplify things then you can play all shots off the turf a little ahead of the middle of your stance. Yes, if the 3 wood is on a tee then you can play it more forward similarly to a driver. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hey Roy, that's definitely going to be tougher. Try to match your shoulders to the angle of the slope. You may need to play the ball a little further back in the stance. Expect the ball to come out a lot lower. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

I play it one ball forward.... usually my right one cause I'm left handed.....

Hi Glenn, there is! In general, any shot played off the turf can have a ball position of straight down from the lead ear. Driver off the tee can be played straight down from the lead shoulder. Keeps it really simple. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

This is dangerous information. Heaps of pro golfers play the three wood off the deck way up in the stance. I actually get better contact when I put it closer to my left foot because it forces me to sweep the clubhead and weight shift in the downswing (otherwise I'll hit it fat and top it).
