I used to average 110 - 115 score, about 3 yrs ago. Then I discovered Clay. After a few months of following his videos,I have not shot a triple digit score in 2.5 yrs. In fact, I’ve had plenty of upper 70s scores. Thank You Clay.
I have been playing for 25 years. In college I could occasionally hit my over the top pull over 300 yards. I have been watching your videos over the last two weeks. I was chunking everything until I started turning harder yesterday. For me this video was a day late but it was definitely my problem. I hit two drives over 300 yesterday though I haven't done so in years. I finally feel like I'm swinging instead of hitting. Had to adjust my iron distances about 15 yards too. Thank you Clay!
Awesome tip Clay, I have been struggling the last few months making consistent contact and it has really effected my confidence. Some days I'll go out and shoot a 78, everything is clicking, 2 days later I will throw down a 95 because every shot is a bit off. Just hit 50 balls into my net at home after using pillows as an impact bag to practice. Went through my whole set, best contact I have felt on the ball in the last year. Thanks again.
I'm a decent player (-4), but it's a lot of work. I've always felt like I was working harder then everyone else that scored the same as I did. I always felt like my move was not right. People compliment me on my swing but I've always felt like I was missing something. This was it! I worked on chopping wood for a few days and it felt great. The swing takes a lot less effort and the ball leaps off the face. I put the swing thought in play Yesterday in our club tourney and shot even par (72) for a tie for second place. First place shot a 71. All round I just kept saying, chop that wood! I only hit one bad shot, which was a skulled 7-iron. Not sure what caused that but I can't wait to work on the new swing feel more this week. That was the first time parring my home course. A lot of 73's but never 72. Thanks a ton!
I watched this lesson a week or two ago. Didn't use the bag, but went to the range concentrating on pulling club down and rotating to create the lag. Didn't happen right away, but once grooved I can't believe the difference. That action has transformed my driver distance. Strangely, accuracy as well. I have been stuck on 11 handicap for ages, 3 rounds in now and this looks like something destined to drag me to the single figure rating I have been desiring. Cheers from Downunder.
This really works, hit my 5 iron 212 yrds. Clay and his team are here to help, pay attention to all the fine details in all their videos. Join the Top Speed Golf system.
That was one of the best drills in your entire program. Wow!! Worked on that, covering ball and keeping hands low at the same time - and I hit the club in the sweet spot at a high percentage for me - with a lot of extra distance. Thank you!!
I stumbled upon one of your videos for the first time the other day, and now I can't get enough of them. Everything I've watched from you so far makes much more sense to me than most of what I've watched in the past, and it seems to be easy to duplicate. I can't wait to get back out on the course and work on some of these techniques. Thanks, Clay!
Wow, this really works. Over the last 5 years I was loosing the ability to compress the ball. I used to be able to do it but couldn't get it back. I'm late 60's and was getting to where an 8 iron only went 135. Played just my third time yesterday with this drill in mind. All practice facilities are closed so straight to the first tee. Ripped a drive, 8 iron 160. Shot 2 under for nine. Thank you.
@@TopSpeedGolf Another thing. I've always hit the ball pretty straight but this move seems to give me laser beams. I even had a covid rules eagle, bounced it off the cup from 155.
Clay, I just saw this. Rotating my hips open is the key. So hard to learn and t-r-u-s-t !! Can't wait to get to the range today and try this. If you look at Jon Rahm and Tony Finau, they don't take it back to parallel, but they FIRE their hips open. If I keep my head steady and do that, it is pure. Thanks for this!!!
Videos are amazing - u keep it very simple & for the first time, since I’ve been following these simple drills, my game has massively improved. No longer slicing my drive & hitting my irons very cleanly. All breeds confidence. Just need to cut out the 3 putts now....
Just came across this video. I am a TSG member and have been working on the straight line release and making good progress. I am making much better contact but still not generating the club head speed I know I am capable of. Even though I am 66 I am still athletic and strong and it frustrates me to see people, even older than me, carrying their 7 iron 160/170 yards. This drill makes sense and I can see how it can work in conjunction with the SLR method. Going to incorporate this one into my training tonight. Also, the point about keeping the lead arm sinched is a good one and should be part of the SLR section.
Thanks for watching! If you're looking for more clubhead speed, you really ought to jump into the 20 Minute Distance Fix... topspeedgolf.com/courses/distance-masterclass/ Our members have gained an average of 34.5 yards going through the course!
What do you know, another absolute gold video from Clay. It's almost midnight on the east coast and I'm about to go out in the backyard and try this one ha
So counterintuitive, you mentioned this in an earlier video too, about how you swing towards the outside but your hips move the swing into the right position
Over a year & a half ago, I was able to hit my p wedge 150 yards, but I was very inconsistent with topping, shanking the ball. Started to have a slow and consistent swing and hitting straighter shots but my p wedge only goes about 125-130 max. Gonna give this drill a try. I feel like I’m not using my lower body as much and not swinging so fast to not go back to doing my baseball swing. Going to try the drill out and hoping to gain back those 20-25 yards back.
Another great video. The weight should be about 75 to 80 % forward at the point it back down to the 3 o'clock position on way down. The release of energy is so quick.
The best tip ever. I have try with a golf simulator and seems to go incredible well. I have gain 50 yards with the virtual driver and 25 mph. I hope I can translate it to real clubs.
Just getting into playing golf, but Can you make a step by step video on how to properly swing a golf club (driver and irons) and common swing issues you see with beginning golfers from another sport? I’m a former college baseball player and that swing is night and day with a golf swing. I have the tendency to over rotate/snap my hips and pull off the ball since a golf club is so much lighter than a bat. I can hit it 250+ yards but it’s always pulling hard left and in the trees. I haven’t found a lot of videos that breaks down a proper swing to work on at the range and I’m sure there are other former athletes that have the same struggle in learning how to play golf correctly. Thanks for all the uploads and content.

If I were Clay, playing a competitive round, I would say “Let’s give it a whirl” before I hit each shot. Because every time he says that before he demonstrates a concept in a TH-cam video, he seems to flush it - right on target.
This is an awesome drill. I think the key, that Clay didn’t touch on too much, is covering the ball. I don’t think rotation alone will square the club face. Maybe a quick comment on that, Clay? Thanks for the awesome video!
Totally agree. Yes, you need to have the side bend with the rotation to cover the ball. If you don't then you'll just swing over the top. Having this drill the nail feeling helps you to get side bend and cover the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard I was also thinking about turning the wrists over on the downswing (so the logo on your glove kind of faces the ground) to square the face along with rotation and side bend. No?
Clay, this channel is AWESOME! I decided this was the year I wanted to fully commit to improving my golf game and your videos have helped a lot. Is there a way to do this drill without an impact bag?
Clay! How are you? Great video! One quick question! When you're slamming the club down on that angle, when you're moving downward are you doing the motorcycle move/ tour twist 2 square the club face up? Thank you and continued success!
I just watched your video "The World's Best Golf Tip That ALL Pros Do", seems the video above adds more swing thoughts to the mentioned downswing video. Should the instructions from these two lessons be merged together? Enjoyed both of them very much!!
when you swing the club down, are you allowing the club to stay open (the face towards the camera) as it comes down? Or do you feel like you're swinging the club down while trying to keep the face of the club pointed down towards the ground? Hopefully that made sense. Again, thank you for the awesome videos as always!
Hi Steven, ideally you would already have the face mostly squared up in the early part of the downswing. I'm not feeling like I'm pointing it in any direction. I have it squared up early and I'm just turning through to the ball. The rotation of my body squares the face. Feel is relative though. Hope that helps. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay, thank you very much for your videos and especially this one. I can definitely draw the ball better now( I’ve always played with a zero path) but what suggestions could you give me to hit a cut using this drill? Again, thanks for sharing your great knowledge of the game.
Every action gets a equal and opposite reaction. The harder you pull down the top, more you're pulling your feet away from the target when you want gain momentum toward it. Think of standing on ice and doing the hammer move. Which way would your want to feet slide? Away from the target. You can swing a driver 112mph with just a relaxed (not limp) gravity drop of the arms because your CG is not pulled the wrong way and you don't restrict the turn through the ball. You have to compensate a hard pull down with some added weight shift. Good luck timing all that on the course.
Just like my PGA coach taught me. Well done. I appreciate the guidance of left arm and chest connection. That kind of muscle guidance help me achieve the result. It's the "how" that makes growth possible.
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard excellent teacher, bad tip here. You do not want your hands forward to get big shaft lean with a driver; only with your irons.
Its only in the last two years that I have figured out the hip turn. Its still hard to do. Its funny because a coach can fix a swing and he can fix the hips but if he does not fix them both the student gets no benefit. I like how you said "open the body." I am going to make that my news swing thought.
Couple questions...I just watched your video on shallowing the club and bowing the left wrist on the way down. Are you doing that here? How can you shallow the club when you strike straight down this way? Does the lag come as a bi product of the sharp change in direction from the top? Do you feel like your pulling the grip down hard and not the club head?
Hi, yes, you are doing the same thing here. You're not hitting straight down. You're swinging from the inside (shallow position) and rotating. Lag is not necessarily automatic. If you do it naturally then it is but if you're not then you'll need to consciously do it to get lag. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
This is the rotational swing my teacher has been trying to get me to do. It wouldn't work on the course because I wasn't doing it right. I've struggled with compressing irons my whole life. I never had it explained this clearly. I'll try this out once the courses in So Cal reopen. I think I can do it. It makes a lot of sense. Excellent demo.
It's mostly coming from your arms but the rotation of your body allows you to create momentum and get a whip-like effect. Plus, it allows you to deloft the face for more compression. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I have always instinctively done this on the driving range but thought it was because my swing was bad. For it to work for me I have to make a bigger than normal turn back with a wide and straighter left arm.
I used this drill with the sticks last summer before a trip to Scotland. I enjoyed one of my best ball striking rounds ever which led to a solid round of 75. Unfortunately I lost the magic soon after. My diagnosis was a simple loss of timing and being out of sequence with arm swing and proper body rotation. I have a tendency to pitty-pat the ball and get lazy and it will not work unless you are aggressive through the shot. IMHO
This is good. If I can hit my PW 150-160 - then I can toss out that stupid Gap Wedge and hit my SW 140 - and then hit all my lobs 125 -which means I'm putting from 115 in. That changes my whole game. Thanks!
Thanks! Yes, it will work for driver as well. It's just a different sensation. Instead of feeling like you're driving the nail a little down into the ball, you'll want to feel like you're driving the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi Stephen, yeah, you just modify the sensation. So, instead of feeling like you're driving the nail down, feel like you let the club bottom out and drive the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi Andrew, feel is relative so not sure if that feeling will help you. The right arm is going to be relatively bent into impact. It depends on how much you open your body. More open is more bent while less open is less bent. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Great video on technique, but I don't understand the obsession with distance (apart from the Driver). Why would I over extend myself to try and hit a Wedge 150 yards, if I can do it more relaxed and controlled with a 9 or 8 Iron? If you try to hit too hard and too far then you are going to compromise on accuracy. The only club that I wish to be able to hit further is the Driver.
Hi, thanks for the comment. The best players hit everything further. This is a relaxed swing still. He isn't hitting this PW as hard as he can. He is getting good speed and delofting it which makes it go further. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Was struggling with consistent iron strikes. Greatly improved my mid to short irons. Does this work for long irons and fairway woods? This took my 8 iron from 155 to 160. To more like 165 to 170.
Yes, this will work for all shots hit off the turf. It can work with driver too. You just want to have the sensation that you're letting the club bottom out and drive the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I really like your tips Clay. I am gratefull you shared this tip, i had some how forgotten that move. Thee ole #counter movement move. Lol. Truely Opened up alot of new positive results.I would also encourage you to stress how rotating from the inside of the leg/body(counter clockwise) instead of outside of the body is so important to a desired result. I believe the difference is X =inside () =outside. Do my arms, upper body rotate counter clockwise too? Can you explain this? And why?
So if your on the golf course and you have a 157 yard shot, your really going to pull PW? Might want to work on the mental side of approach/attack shots to better manage the distance of iron shots.
Yes, the sensation will just be different. You want to allow the club to bottom out then feel like you're driving the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay, Q, - Seems that your compression drills should give you similar results? You have a lot going on in this video, maybe a simplified version would be better for us amateurs. Less is more sometimes.
Hi Randy, thanks for the feedback. It's all about finding that feeling that works best for you. If this one doesn't resonate or seems to complex then try one of our other videos. We have lots of drills that accomplish the same things on our channel. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Nelson James so you should be closer to full extension at contact with a driver? Clearing that positive launch angle?
Jake Pierrelee yes your hands should be about even with the ball at contact with driver.
@@nelsonjames1272 wouldn't putting the ball further forward in his stance make his hands about even at impact. Nerd.
Its only in the last two years that I have figured out the hip turn. Its still hard to do. Its funny because a coach can fix a swing and he can fix the hips but if he does not fix them both the student gets no benefit. I like how you said "open the body." I am going to make that my news swing thought.
Best of luck!
Great video - does this also apply to driver? i.e the getting the club down at start of downswing?
Definitely counterintuitive. Wouldnt this promote casting and bottoming out behind the ball?
No
Couple questions...I just watched your video on shallowing the club and bowing the left wrist on the way down.
Interested to see how the feeling of keeping my upper left arm connected with my chest at impact as to how the divot is taken in front of the ball .
You have to make sure you open your body.
Thanks Brett! Best of luck!
So power for driver comes from the speed of the rotating of the shoulder? Is it?
It's mostly coming from your arms but the rotation of your body allows you to create momentum and get a whip-like effect. Plus, it allows you to deloft the face for more compression. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Tom Tomasello talks about this. He says basically a karate chop straight at the ball directed slightly out to right field.
And rotate like crazy!
I have always instinctively done this on the driving range but thought it was because my swing was bad. For it to work for me I have to make a bigger than normal turn back with a wide and straighter left arm.
Thanks for sharing!
Great drill! I'll be doing that in my garage today.
Best of luck Ed!!
Great Video 🤙
Glad you liked it!
IMHO
Thanks for sharing!
This is good. If I can hit my PW 150-160 - then I can toss out that stupid Gap Wedge and hit my SW 140 - and then hit all my lobs 125 -which means I'm putting from 115 in. That changes my whole game. Thanks!
Thanks!
Great drill and tip. I am still struggling with getting my hips to clear first?
Thanks!
What degree is your Pitching wedge??
Hi clay thank u that good drill , but I have problems hit 5 iron is keep pulling to the left can u help me with that .please
Hi Roy, search our channel for "pull" videos. We have a few that will help. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thank u clay
Great drill Clay. Does this work for Driver as well just by changing your setup?
Thanks! Yes, it will work for driver as well. It's just a different sensation. Instead of feeling like you're driving the nail a little down into the ball, you'll want to feel like you're driving the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard l
좋은 레슨 감사합니다
My pleasure!
Would this work with driver just change ball position?
Yes, and don't hit the ground 🙂
Hi Clay, great drill feels really powerful. Question: do you use this method/feeling during all your swings? Or is it only a training exercise?
You can do it during all your swings if it gives you great results. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Never seen you so excited
Haha...thanks!
Concerned about being to steep with driver and woods....any modifications for driver?
Hi Stephen, yeah, you just modify the sensation. So, instead of feeling like you're driving the nail down, feel like you let the club bottom out and drive the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I draw my irons a little. I need to know. Should I aim on my target or should I aim on the right side?
Paratroopa I did the same thing for a while, i started folding my hands a tad later on my downswing and it helped fix my draw.
I would aim a little right if you draw everything.
Quality drill but will this apply to a 2iron? I feel as thought I have to sweep it off the turf.
Yes!
@matt becham so same technique different ball position. cheers.
Does this also feel like you are unfolding your right arm while maintaining lag and turning your body through?
Hi Andrew, feel is relative so not sure if that feeling will help you. The right arm is going to be relatively bent into impact. It depends on how much you open your body. More open is more bent while less open is less bent. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hey Clay. Does this apply to the driver and fairway woods too?
Yes, it will just be a different sensation with the driver since you're hitting more level or up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks Quentin. Best online instruction by far. Cheers
Similar to Mike Austin👏 .. He used to say throw the club..
Thanks for sharing!
Love these instructions. Also, one really fun thing to do is to play this at .5x speed. You'll know how Clay sounds at the 19th hole. Lol
Thanks!
Where do you do lessons at Clay?
Hey, thanks for the interest but Clay doesn't offer private lessons. He focuses all his time on making videos and running the business. This allows him to help as many people as possible. Robin, our Director of Instruction, does private lessons in the Orlando, FL area. If interested then follow this link: topspeedgolf.com/in-person-lessons-with-robin-rosado/. Play well!
Is it the same for driver ?
No exactly but similar. You'll just have the sensation that you're driving the nail up into the ball instead. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard thanks
Was struggling with consistent iron strikes. Greatly improved my mid to short irons. Does this work for long irons and fairway woods? This took my 8 iron from 155 to 160. To more like 165 to 170.
Yes, this will work for all shots hit off the turf. It can work with driver too. You just want to have the sensation that you're letting the club bottom out and drive the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf thanks. I watch your stuff all the time. Keep up the good work. Always looking forward to your videos.
And why?
You make it look so easy. I watch it and understand it but can not recreate it.
You can do it. I just takes practice.
So if your on the golf course and you have a 157 yard shot, your really going to pull PW? Might want to work on the mental side of approach/attack shots to better manage the distance of iron shots.
Hi Don, if that's how far you hit a PW then that is what I'd pull. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Can we use the drill for the driver too
Yes, the sensation will just be different.
How many times did you film hitting it fat before filming?
Haha, those are just divots. We were testing out the drill. He wasn't hitting it fat. 😂 Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
So you're starting your arms first? Like Hogan said pulling the arrow out of the quiver?
No, you need to make sure you rotate which is what is starting first.
I am 109 yds with 6 iron. Help. The opening the body up is hard for me.
Hope the drill helps!
