The greatest chipping tip of all time. Best video by far. Nice Bloke also. Love the parts where you mention that slight angle towards the target making you finish through the shot without even thinking about it. Also just imagining that you are just tossing a ball forward without thinking about it. Absolutely brilliant!!!!! Before this I thinned and chunked with no confidence at all chopping and changing my swing all of the time without an idea as what to do. I I honestly nearly gave up... Before I was thinking wooden arms and putting techniques that got me nowhere. Can't give this video enough credit. Just imagined myself stood on that slight angle gently tossing a ball to an invisible person, totally relaxed then applying it with the club. Must have hit 500 shots without a thin or a chunk, never achieved before by other techniques. Can't say more than a big thanks mate. Think I can finally play around the green with a simple thought. Toss the ball into the hole. If I could I'd get you an ice cold beer! Cheers mate!

This video is great. Clay is a great teacher and this technique really does work, I practiced it at home in the week went out this morning for nine holes and didn’t duff a single chip truly remarkable. Arguably the best short game video on you tube and I have watched a lot of them. Clay thanks for sharing your expert knowledge.
Thank you Clay for such great videos. So easy to follow and reminders that not all chips will end up 5 inches from the hole 😊 down to 11 after 2.5 years and now seeing that chipping and putting will likely be the key to lowering my handicap further 🤞all the best from 'sunny' UK 👋
I almost always forget to give you the thumbs up since I just want to get to the video and then I just want to go work on what you've described. This one, as usual, was excellent. Thanks.
A lot of great information. You've covered and dispelled some thoughts and techniques I've had that were giving me problems that I didn't know the cause. I also liked that you mentioned that even the pros aren't 100% in their execution. As an amateur we think we have to attain close to 100% in execution, that's additional pressure that we don't need. I'll save this and use it. I've been a member of your Top Speed Golf for several years and there is a lot of good info there too at a reasonable price.
I watched this video and then went to my course and practiced chipping. I am very excited that my chipping improved dramatically in just one practice session. THANK YOU !
I have subscribed to you for my second year. I'll add this video to the ones that I get from my subscription. Chipping has not been easy for me, despite your insistence that it is easy. I'll keep working, thanks!
Thanks for the vote of confidence, James. Yes, the short game takes time and practice to get a good grasp on it. Keep on working at it and eventually it'll become second nature. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
That’s what I thought. I played 9 hole Sunday and kept chipping right but I was turning the wrists down but I noticed when I recorded that the face was square already. Thank you for the answer and awesome instruction.
Excellent, comprehensive explanation and demonstration of shot-saving, scoring short game! 👏👏 Around the green, I sometimes imagine I'm throwing a ball in the way you describe to help with judging where I want the ball to go/carry and feeling the swing I will use. I find I'm less likely to hit shots short that way - a common problem with that shot!
Clay, I just subscribed to your website, and I can't remember being so excited to get out and practice a few of these drills. If you already have, and I just haven't found it, do you have a video out here showing and explaining the major differences between the "Chip" shot and the "Pitch" shot, when to use one over the other, and maybe the pros and cons of each shot. Thank you for the great videos.
You can do this from the rough if it's a descent lie or better. If it's down in the rough then you may want to play it a little further back in the stance and hinge the wrists more so you can come down steeper.
This is great, however I would like to learn your techniques for chipping/pitching from difficult lies. Deep turf, hard pan, muddy, uphill, downhill, sidehill etc. Great stuff Clay!
Great video....I used to be really good around the greens (a decade ago), so I finally had a lesson a few weeks ago with my local pro which was very good. I was still missing something when I stumbled onto this video and watched the one handed drill and BANG...it all fell into place. You got yourself a new follower here Clay. Thanks from the land of Oz.
Clay is the Bob Ross of golf videos. Great instruction and I could listen to him read a phone book. "Well that probably wasn't the best one but I could make that putt if I hit a good putt"
Clay I always struggles with golf but when had seen alot of your videos it's really improve my game alot especially to do variablity training, early weight shift and shallowing only the point I can't understand is whenever you demonstrate the impact glide in your videos from the part where the hands turns up with help of foot pressure and hip and shoulders moving up and out what happens from there the last parallel when hands move up and when you show that club is way down on ground exaggerated and grip moving up I have a little bit of trouble in understanding. Thanks
Great video and it's already been a help. What changes do you recommend to this approach when I have a downhill or downhill sidehill lie? (Can't seem to apply this approach to those situations because the shallow thing doesn't seem to be called for in those cases...)
So Clay would it be correct to say that when hitting a Chipshot there is no need to. post up With your left leg for right handed golfers like you would do if you were pitching or hitting a full shot simply because you do not need that much power coming up vertically from the ground so that your left knee could be slightly bent on chip shots. With that be correct?
Not necessarily. You need your legs to move and your hips to pivot on these shots even through there isn't a lot of power. You won't be coming all the way around into a full finish but there will be more of an abbreviate post up. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks Q! I thought that might be the case. Incidentally I noticed that when I was watching Chuck on Rotary Swing, that Clay was one of the instructors that taught his methodology. Now is that recent or has Clay and yourself et.al been associated with Rotary Swing for some time?
great video Clay, I've always been a great chipper, and my thoughts have always been that I chip with my knees, very passive hands. I really like how you explain the knee pivot at the start, great stuff as always!
Really helpful video. I am just interested in whether you tend to have more weight on your left side or whether it is even. Chipping is such an important component in the game of golf.
Thanks David! We like the Snell MTB Black but there are lots of good ones out there. It's personal preference. Try a bunch of them and see what you like. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Morning Clay once again an excellent video on chipping. Two points that I was unaware of, firstly having your left foot open and aiming to finish facing the target. Secondly the drills with tees at various heights, this is something I will practice until it has improved. These shots form a very important part of the scoring game and if you want to improve like I do and lower your handicap which I do aswell, I will practice them until I see an improvement. I have also liked and subscribed to your videos.
What’s the club path like dtl. Do u take the club back inside really shallow to get a lower angle of attack with that rotation? Compared to full shot take away
It's going to be the same as a full shot. Ideally, you'd bring it back on plane or above then come down a litting from the inside. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
It really is like a putting stroke in that you don't unhinge your wrists. The difference is that you allow your lower body to rotate slightly to make sure your wrists stay out of it.
With this technique ... what is the roll out ratio to ball in the air ... for 60, 56 degree wedges... would also recommend a opening the club face any.... thanks man great video
Hi Clay. I'm experiencing hitting horrible shots off the hosel when chipping. I believe that the root of the issues is a strong grip combined with an in-to-out swing. Any recommendations? Many thanks and keep up the good work! F.
Clay, do you have any drills for people like me who tend to chicken wing in their chipping/ pitching stroke? I'm looking forward to someday being able to help someone with their golf game. I have struggled with dep perception and want to believe in myself and the people I coach in the future that they can improve with hard work.
Yes, all the drills in the video above. You need to unlock your legs. Chicken wing comes from arms racing in from of the body. Keep the body moving through with the arms. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay - always enjoy your videos. I am a terrible chipper although I am a single digit handicap. I've tried everything and watched a million videos. Frankly I can spend tons of practice time - and can chip it like a pro after 10 minutes on the range. But then cannot bring it to the course - due to lack of confidence; leading to look ups chunks, late hand stabs, etc. I like the body turn element with your video - the one thing that seems to run counter to most instructors is the "swinging club to the right"....most teachers say the opposite; club outside on takeaway and swing left coming down? Even Tiger talks about hitting short game shots like his full swing - and with full swing you bring hands to the left - not out to the right, which potentially introduces hosel shots. How do I reconcile these differences?
Hey Jim, first, I would make your practice more similar to the course. Don't hit the same shot over and over. Hit from different spots to different holes. It's too easy to get in a groove when you hit the same shot over and over. You're swinging to the right because your body is more open. If you opened your body and swung left then you would really just cut across the ball. Swinging to the right with the body open get's you on plane. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay, Great video as always but is it possible to make a chipping/pitching video for us who have been battling the dreadful/debilitating/horrendous/self defeating YIPS? I'm a 8 hcp and spend plenty of my time working on this and usually (15 min) at the beginning of practice find something that works for that hour or so...but it changes with every session i have. Just when I feel I've got something that works, taking it out to the course seems impossible. I've considered a lobotomy but that probably would mess up the rest of my game... Thanks
@@TopSpeedGolf I found it. Thanks for the videos! Clay's always have worked fine for me. LOL, lot's of advice out there on youtube, nice to see ones that actually work!
It’s hard to trust the easy smooth body swing will give you the distance and control you need. The hands and wrist are control freaks. Let the body and club do the work... nothing like the feeling or sound of catching one clean... Thank you for posting...
My problem areas are 2 yards or in to the green. I get in my head don’t thin it and don’t carry it far to were I duff it and hit the green 1 to 2 feet or I hit it like a putt and it rolls off the back of the green. In my head it’s distance control I have none
Great video Clay,,,really do believe those tips will save a load of shots,,and maybe turn long puts into a few gimmies,,,,more importantly,,,,I need to know where you got the hat,,,,,thanks Lee
Hi, I would recommend getting more club head speed. If you work on this with your driver then it will translate to your irons. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf this has really helped my short game. I started back in may after 15 years away from golf. Now if i could just drop the ball on the green from 100 yds out i could break 90!
Awesome video. Any thoughts on grip? I've personally liked using a weak grip and hold off release with the body rotation through the ball to square the face.
Hi Andrew, I would just use whatever you use for your normal swing. Weak, strong or neutral is personal preference and whatever works best for you. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay, I’ve saw a lot on imagine tossing a ball and that’s the movement you want. When you actually hit the ball are you visualizing the distance you would want to toss the ball?
@@TopSpeedGolf no prob! Hey i haven't seen a video to much on this, but could you post on how you became a instructor for those that are considering doing as a career. Where to start, do you have to be a scratch golfer? Thanks
I had to call Carpet One to replace all the carpeting in the house because of all the divots I took. I was chopping down on my chips so hard I tore right through the fabric and dug holes through out the house because I was always looking for a new place to chip from where there weren't any holes. Over time I had created more holes than there was carpet. Then my Labrador, Chelsea kept getting her paws stuck in the holes and eventually snagged her toe which required a $425 visit to the vet. The vet asked me what might have caused the rip in her dew claw and after I told him about all the holes in the house, he suggested I carpet the entire house with ASTRO turf designed to stand up to my error ridden chipping technique which I have turned into chopping, not chipping. Now, with new turf spread through out the house, I can practice Clay's new methods here where I not only preserve the new turf. Only downside is Chelsea now thinks it's so cool that i brought the outdoors inside that it must be okay to do her 'business' inside the home. So now I must house train her all over again but that's a nice problem to have considering I will soon have turned my chopping into chipping and landing the ball right next to the cup nearly every time for a short tap in.
Phil Mickelson says you should never chip with the ball in the middle of your stance. If you want to hit it low it goes off your back toe. A higher shot goes on your front toe. Also 90% of you weight on your lead leg. (This is for chipping). What are your thoughts on this?
That may work for Phil but if you put the ball back in your stance then it forces you to come down steep which gives you very little margin for error. If you have excellent skills like Phil then you can certain do that and keep it lower. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Great video, but it’s still ball turf contact. When I play any shots, long or short, I don’t like too many thoughts before my swing. I think this video with the Padraig Harrington instruction on chipping helps me. Still only managing around 30% clean contacts.
How do I calculate my playing handicap at any course. If my handicap index is 17 and I am playing my home course from the white tees with a course rating of 70 and a slope of 129 and a par of 72 how do I calculate my playing handicap for that course?
Clay: You are a genius! Quick question: 1.) are you accelerating through or making it more of a pendulum with your torso? Like 7oclock to 4 o’clock? 2.) my struggle is alignment. I’m getting that you’re aiming with the right hand? Like tossing with the right ?
Hi Brad, I prefer higher bounce in the 10-14 range. If you play in dry and firm conditions then you may be able to get away with a little less. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi Clay, I'm a lefty and my problems are subconsciously freezing the wrists in mid swing, and at other times letting my left hand take over at the downswing transition point. Any suggested drills? Thanks
Hi Leroy, the key is to keep your body moving through impact. If you stall the hips then your trail hand has almost no choice but to take over. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi, we don't have any videos specifically on that. The only difference would be playing the ball to go a little more right if the ball is below your feet and a little more left if the ball is above your feet (assuming you're right handed). You can choke up to get a little more control but you'll need to take a bigger swing. If the grass is really thick then you may just need to chop more down into the ball to get it out. You can't expect to get these shots close. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf If I"m 50 from the green, it's usually not on such nice grass. Can you show how deal with fluffier lies or from the rough. I know you explained it, but you explain so well on the video. I'm also a tennis player and it's good to see how those fundamentals carry over.

Thanks
Hi, we actually have a video on this on our channel. Just search the word "yips". Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi Darrell, thanks for sharing. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Great stuff! Now I only have to wait for spring in Sweden...
Jag håller med 😭
Thanks!
Same here in northern ny
My problem areas are 2 yards or in to the green. I get in my head don’t thin it and don’t carry it far to were I duff it and hit the green 1 to 2 feet or I hit it like a putt and it rolls off the back of the green. In my head it’s distance control I have none
Hope the video helps
Great video Clay,,,really do believe those tips will save a load of shots,,and maybe turn long puts into a few gimmies,,,,more importantly,,,,I need to know where you got the hat,,,,,thanks Lee
My pleasure! Got the hat on Amazon
Please suggest how to hit irons for more distance .Thank you.
Hi, I would recommend getting more club head speed. If you work on this with your driver then it will translate to your irons. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Bro you're a kickass coach! 🔥
Thanks Dave!
@@TopSpeedGolf this has really helped my short game. I started back in may after 15 years away from golf. Now if i could just drop the ball on the green from 100 yds out i could break 90!
Nice video, easy to understand and also to follow and apply directly.👍
Thanks!
Awesome tips. Thanks
Thanks!
Clay - excellent video. Now I need to go out and really try this. Question - what is your weight distribution when chipping?
Clay, I’ve saw a lot on imagine tossing a ball and that’s the movement you want. When you actually hit the ball are you visualizing the distance you would want to toss the ball?
that can help
One of your best videos partner!
Thanks!
@@TopSpeedGolf no prob! Hey i haven't seen a video to much on this, but could you post on how you became a instructor for those that are considering doing as a career. Where to start, do you have to be a scratch golfer? Thanks
Is picking up a landing spot on the green a good idea? Also is more weight on left feet still apply here? Great vid as always. Thanks.
Yes and yes :-)
I'm seeing that new hat on dozens of golfers so good on you for that. (You should've made it Top Speed swag!)
It's pretty good
Brilliant! Clay explains the mechanics really clearly and simply. Just what I need!
Thanks!
Great tutorial clay as always 👍👍🏴
Thanks!
😂😂😂
Thanks, 100% agree
Clay - great video! are you keeping the club face square or do you allow it to rotate open on the back swing?
Thanks Mark! Not intentionally trying to keep it square. You can let it open and close into impact. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Do these concepts still apply to the tight lies where there is less grass and more hardpan?
yes
How do I calculate my playing handicap at any course. If my handicap index is 17 and I am playing my home course from the white tees with a course rating of 70 and a slope of 129 and a par of 72 how do I calculate my playing handicap for that course?
Clay: You are a genius! Quick question: 1.) are you accelerating through or making it more of a pendulum with your torso? Like 7oclock to 4 o’clock?
2.) my struggle is alignment. I’m getting that you’re aiming with the right hand? Like tossing with the right ?
Thanks! You're accelerating through. Aim with the club face, not the feet. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
love your instruction, also where can I get the hat you wear
Thanks! Amazon
Love the attitude! Nice man.
Thanks!
Excellent video. Helped me a lot in my short game. Thank you Clay!
My pleasure Clifford!
What degree of bounce are most players using for the 56 & 60 degree wedges?
I hope you could do a video about chipping from non-ideal locations like on hills or in unruly grass. I would putt from that beautiful fairway
What club are you using at 5 minutes? 60 degree?
Yes
another great video clay
Thanks!
Clay can you show hitting out of thick grass and bad rough when chipping also hitting on a downhill and uphill lie
Another great vid... I like how you show us the end result of your shots
Thanks Tony!
Good tips Clay! Opening the stance makes it easy to get through it
Thanks!
