    If you have ever been to the bottom of a pool and felt the pressure in your ears you can imagine what 10,000 feet may be like. Human don’t belong in the water. Not depths like that. It is insane dangerous. But some of us don’t care about that and we need that danger to feel alive. The only problem I have is the lack of safety. Rest In Peace, guys.

    They were 15 mins from reaching the Titanic. I can imagine the amount of water pressure was around them by then. They could probably hear the fibers snapping in the sub as it's shell started to give way the lower they got. They were probably trying to resurface but it was too late.

    Just a "friendly question". I am no expert but I watched several videos and read various articles from and by experts that the Titan, being made from predominantly carbon fibre, was not meant to go so deep. Is it not misleading to state it was built to go down 4 000m? The Titan imploded because it could not take the amount of pressure. Clearly not built for those depths?

    You should have added "allegedly" or "according to OceanGate" because the viewport of the submersible was only built to a certified pressure of 1,300 meters.

  • @careercriticalthinker
    @careercriticalthinker ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The fact that Oceansgate privately had know that Sunday that the sub imploded immediately after comms and tracking were both lost simultaneously and shared that fact with the Coast Guard,....yet, while deliberately misleading the public for four days is the real tragedy here. The families were hanging on to false hope for days until Thursday when Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute finally confirmed what was known all along on Sunday by traveling to Titan's last known position and then descending straight to the bottom where Titan's wreckage was found,..exactly where they expected to find it. Authorities knew all along that the sub had imploded on Sunday, and dragged out the story of hope for four days. They only interviewed James Cameron and Robert Ballard till AFTER the fact because both these men already knew early Monday that the sub had imploded. Basically, Stockton Rush designed the sub with a 'tin can and duct tape' mentality which reinforces the sub's design as experimental. Basically, Rush expected this design to be sufficient to sustain a deep sea tourism business using crude and elementary methods on board such as using second-hand gaming technology as a means to control propulsion. Yes, the sub made successful dives to Titanic,.HOWEVER, the carbon fiber shell literally degraded with every trip significantly. This meant that the sub tragically was weakened with every dive. All successful deep sea submersible vehicles utilize a solid component spherical design that needs to meet certification every five years. Stockton 'Crush', if you'll pardon the pun, was using a pawn shop mentality to support a deep sea tourism business using a 'tin can and duct tape' design that received heavy criticism and safety concerns throughout the small deep sea exploration diving community.......and that is the reality of this event.

    The Bathyscaphe Trieste had a 5-inch thick steel hull and reached the Mariana Trench in 1960. It weighed 50 long tons. Most of the Trieste had thinner steel, but it wasn’t pressurized. That's already a superior design than the Titan submersible, and the Trieste was made over 70 years ago. When it comes to strength, aluminum alloys have ultimate tensile strengths ranging from 10,000 psi to 75,000 psi.
    Titanium alloys have ultimate tensile strengths ranging from 25,000 to 220,000 psi. Steel has ultimate tensile strengths ranging from 35,000 to 350,000 psi. There's your winner. Delamination is when layers of carbon fiber begin to unbond due to stress. Steel returns back to its original shape. Damage to carbon fiber remains and accumulates.
    The material is horrible for a sub. James Cameron designed his Deepsea Challenger sub out of syntactic foam and 2.5-inch steel beams. It was tested for its ability to withstand the required 114 megapascals (16,500 pounds per square inch) of pressure in a pressure chamber at Pennsylvania State University.

      @lukepoe1140 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@TheFrenchPug Yeah, it didn't matter. The pressurized point of the Titan submersible hull was surrounded by the carbon fiber. And for a reminder, steel is stronger than titanium, but steel is subject to corrosion and rusting. Non-destructive testing and replacing parts are crucial after every trip.
      In reality, OceanGate would have saved millions just constructing it out of steel right from the get-go. Both steel and titanium still would have been equally better options than CF, which is a less popular material that quite a few engineers are unwilling to use for expensive, deep-sea diving. It's unproven.

    Carbon fiber composites used in a compression load state with high probability of buckling failure are significantly inferior to common AISI 6061 T6xxx aluminum plate and even mild steel. The yield and conservative compression strength of 6061-T651 is around 40-45 ksi, the compression yield of a well laid carbon composite is around 36 ksi. This seeming anomaly for carbon fiber is due mostly to the fiber buckling instability within the composite due to voids, improper lay directions, and delamination from epoxy. The carbon composite is non-isotropic and is subject to unpredictable behavior at stress concentration points under compression. Carbon composites are suited well for tensile loaded applications, such as internally pressurized vessels, but should never be used for externally pressurized vessels without sufficient testing and life-cycle analysis and prediction. A recent paper on composites reviewing these properties may be searched under "A review of the structural factors which control compression in carbon fibres and their composites". I work as a professional mechanical engineer (1982 to present) in both subsea and aerospace environments.

      I never thought of that, carbon fiber being non isotropic. Makes sense. So it would be difficult to test the ways carbon fiber could withstand the pressure since every area of the material is or could be different? I'm so curious, feel free to elaborate more! Loved what you wrote

    • @williamwightman8409
      @williamwightman8409 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@farahleigh8332 I could only do a simple linear type calculation based on the compression derating values suggested in the paper mentioned. It is worth noting intuitively that the rate of deflection in compression is higher (lower spring rate of the epoxy) versus tension (high spring rate of carbon fiber strands). So you can visualize the carbon to epoxy bond being stressed with every compression cycle, but not so much in tension. Carbon fiber use in aerospace must encounter this, except that it is a mixture of tension and compression cycling and the neutral axis in say a beam application must shift toward the tension side greatly decreasing the compression side loading. Strangely, if the lay of the fibers had been biased longitudinally, say up to 30 degrees off the axis, then the compression strength of the composite would rise radically for this type application. It is not clear how stable that configuration would be in buckling analysis. Carbon composites are for those with deep pockets who can afford high quality R&D. Tourist subs should stick with steel and aluminum.

    Leave her alone. The fact the sub was found literally right next to her is eerie. It’s like the ghosts of the titanic were angry and decided to sink her. Those who don’t believe in ghosts, I understand but I have witnessed paranormal things I wouldn’t wish on anyone and caught things on camera that are downright terrifying. My psychologist has witnessed things on our video calls that terrified her so I know I’m not crazy. She and I are both believers in the paranormal after witnessing what we have. You may not believe in ghosts, but I guarantee you they are 100% real. Things I can’t explain have been caught on camera and witnessed in person that can’t be medically or scientifically explained away so it’s a possibility the ghosts of the titanic sank that sub 😳 Scientifically everyone’s scientific points on this feed are valid and also a possibility but I’m convinced this could be both paranormal and scientific.

I understand the implosion happens so quickly they would have felt no pain and even their brains would not have been able to process what just happened but I'm curious if there were signs something was wrong. Maybe they could have heard a loud crack. I hope it truly was quick and they didn't experience fear because of something like that.
