Lobster Hunting and Kayak Diving with GoPro

- Lobster Hunting (California Spiny Lobster or Panulirus interruptus) while SCUBA diving. For this video I used a GoPro HD Hero2 in the GoPro underwater Dive housing with a head mount. A normal lobster dive isn't this action packed and it took several dives to capture everything, all edited down to about six minutes...

If I was him i would of had a rope with 100ft plus of string connected to the kayak to get back to the kayak I am able to swim a mile back and forth from shore but it's sketch at night.

Pinoyfisher look it up, you're maybe confused by the guitar fish (a species of saltwater ray), angel sharks are super rare, according to all my shark books (not stories) and a little scientific research, scientists had determined that this amazing species of shark are about to disappear, in other words, they are *critically endangered species*.
Angel Carreño any animal that is critically endangered would never be allowed to be harvested by the DFW.
The Pacific angelshark is classified as near-threatened which is 3 categories down from critically endangered. There aren't "just a few left", they're pretty common actually.
A 2006 study showed that these we're critically endangered species, but then their population started to grow in the past few years converting them in vulnerable shark species.

I let them swim around in the ocean for a few minutes and then whistle them back in." The Warden looks at the man skeptically and says "Ok then, prove it." The man proceeds to throw the lobsters into the ocean and both he and the Warden stand there waiting. After a couple minutes the Warden looks at the man and says "That's long enough, now whistle your lobsters back in." The man turns to the Warden and says "Lobsters? What lobsters?"

this is probably my favorite video ever. i watch this all the time to relax, and it makes me so happy. i love how he goes WOO! whenever he catches a particularly big lobster, and that he films all the interesting fish and sea life that he sees when diving. it's really cool!

Yeah I think I snagged it I was going for mackerel but then I felt something real heavy on the line and since my friend was new to fishing I let him reel it up next thing I know I see a lobster at the end of my line.

Such good memories...great video! We used to do this a few times a week in winter, and by Super Bowl Sunday we had enough lobster and abalone for 20 people to eat until ready to burst. (Yes, the old days when you could still find 12" red and pink abalone and were allowed to take them on SCUBA).
I have to say though, you're a lot quicker than we were. You're like a lobster gathering ninja. A few of those in the rocks would have easily escaped,, leaving me with an antenna in my hand but nothing else.

these aren't lobsters, they just look like them so we call them lobsters, it's a misnomer. In the decapod crustaceans, actual lobsters are in infraorder astacidea, but spiny lobsters are in achelata. shrimp are caridea, crabs are brachyura. basically these "lobsters" are as far from true lobsters as crabs are

I like your two-handed technique. I loved to lobster hunt in the Florida Keys years ago and I always used a net and a tickle stick since during the day, when the lobsters are hanging out in their homes. It looks like night diving is the way to go when the lobsters are active.
Badass over here is going deep sea lobster hunting in the middle of night while my ass is afraid to go out in my own backyard at night.
what type of dive lights you using?
That video was recorded with NiteRider HID headlamps on each side of my head. NiteRider Dive is out of business now and I've switched to different lights.

There are now small video lights that can be attached to your mask. One I use and like is the Archon D11v

How come you're not afraid of being attacked by a shark or other sea creature? Or, is it that the chance of being attacked is too small to worry about?
Shark attacks are extremely rare. It's one of those things I would classify as an irrational fear. As a matter of fact, I don't believe a SCUBA diver has ever been the victim of a shark attack in Southern California.
But in every shark movie I watch, they portray the shark as territorial. Isn't there any truth to that?

Rick Coleman u are right the only reason there has been 40 scuba shark attacks in the last 80 years and the only reason for that is the shark probably thought the diver was a sea lion pup because they were decompressing and the sharks were all great white and from my nolege there aren't many up there

Diving that early, alone, is a sure fire way to get eaten by a shark.
Love the video! I think this season is too close to closing for me to get my diving act together, but maybe next season. A couple years back I snuck onto a pier at night after the gates closed (nighttime photography purposes) and I found a guy out at the end of the pier with a three ring net. It was the first night of the season, and about every fifteen minutes he would pull up the net and pull a couple lobster out. But after seeing this Id rather dive for them!
What's the limit? Seems like you didn't leave any for others.
