  • Lobster Hunting and Kayak Diving with Gopro is a compilation of numerous SCUBA dives from the 2012 California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) season, which started in October and ran through the middle of March. Divers must catch lobsters by hand. I posted a previous video from early in the season - this video is all new footage from the remander of the season. Video includes appearances of other creatures encountered such as: octopus, pacific electric ray, swell shark, mating crabs, horn shark, cormorant feeding, california halibut, etc.

    I don't know why I find it so hilarious to watch a guy just swim up and grab a lobster. It's just so entertaining. I'll have to do some lobster hunting myself, next summer!

    I really liked how you showed clips of the different fish with annotations of what they were. I've been free diving around orange county for about a year and a half now and I'm always seeing things and wondering what they are. I found those annotations very helpful and would love to see more of that!

    Great Video!!! Im so envious that you can get to a dive spot by kayak in California. Closest artificial reef in New Jersey is 3 miles off shore. Get a 2.2lb bruce anchor. It holds me in amy ocean current and its a lot easier to pull up from deep waters than that bug mushroom you have.

    Thanks, I've looked at some pictures and think you might be right, although the colors don't seem right, but it is a night dive and the lights are reflecting. I think the dorsal fins is what gives it away. I'd like to add a new caption with the correction, but want to be positive. Can you provide more info on your identification?

    The concern with sharks is way overblown. I'm not aware of any fatal shark attacks in Southern California on a SCUBA Diver. We are loud and scary with our bubbles. Even though the statistics prove that the fear is completely irrational, sometimes the thought does creep into my mind when I'm doing a long surface swim or bobbing on the surface. My time underwater is usually peaceful/relaxing and free of any fear.

    Hi Rick. Amazing video. I just got into SCUBA 2 months ago (PADI Advanced Open Water certified, ready for PONY bottle training) and my next goal is to hunt lobster at night here in Puerto Rico. I sure enjoyed the picture of you with your lights and GoPro mounted on you at :36 - which frees up both hands to catch the lobster. Your video is so well presented it almost looks like you have another person to carry the lights and camera - although the angle from the camera looks to be head-mounted and the picture confirms it. Is that your battery pack at 3:08? With your batteries, lights/camera assembly, capture-bag, etc., you probably can remove a lot of your normal BCD additional weight, right? What does that do to your balance/trim?
    Thanks very for the extra editing where you identified most of the sea creatures in the video. Very helpful for those of us who are new to this ecosystem.
    I am 71 years old, a former professional pilot and skydiver. This is my current adventure before I get too old for activities like this. Any chance of you providing a link to where your camera and lights, etc can be purchased? Any other particulars you can share would be much appreciated. ;)

    • @MrRJCtube
      @MrRJCtube  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is my lighting setup and batteries at the time spots you referenced. At the time I used NiteRider HID dive lights, which required bulky batteries. They have since gone out of business. The good news is that current lighting technology offers amazing options. Now I simply attach a self contained light to my mask strap. I like the Archon v10s if you aren't shooting video. If you are shooting video you would need a light without a hotspot, like the Archon v10v or Archon D11V. I've ordered many of these type of lights from Hong Kong, through Ebay. They use lithium 18650 batteries. The problem with video lights that don't have a hot spot is that they don't penetrate for great distance viewing. For my current lobster hunting setup I have video light on my mask (Archon D11v or V10V) and I hand hold a more powerful Archon DY01(lithium 26650 battery) on a retractor for distance viewing. I can let that light go for 2 handed grabs.

    • @johnb2271
      @johnb2271 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RIck, thank you very much for sharing that information. When someone goes down a new path (like this) it is easy to buy equipment they later regret. This will be very helpful.
      What are you using for mounts on the mask strap and the video Archon v10v or Archon D11? (Nothing recommended on Amazon)
