    Not being a skilled welder myself, I had no idea that the weld LADB made would be so hard that it'd be near impossible to drill or tap. Thanks LADB for showing that, I learned something from you and some helpful comments.

    Well done, what a great little shear that is. Is Avril OK? Just for future reference, welding cast iron with mild steel rods nearly always ends with glass hard metal that can only be ground. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

    Love this . But instead of sawing off bolt when the nut is stuck , try a nut splitter, or apply heat and or try tightening the nut before trying to undo it . That often cracks the rust layer off inside

      @timehunter9467 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was thinking that, or a hammer and chisel. I’ve used it on seized bolts before to turn them a bit.

    I love these channels, you know, the ones that actually restore stuff instead of "restoring" and "old toy" that was just smashed with a hammer thrown in mud and finished with basing pigments for miniature painting, This channel is what keeps me hopeful that youtube has some good creators left.

    Just wanted to say that I think your work is awesome. You made this piece look like it's ready for work. The fact that the primer dindn't hide it's marks or the weld on the handle wasn't sanded off, gave it a unique identity (in my opinion). I have a farm and your channel made me believe that my old rusted tools can be restored and back to real action. So thank you for that.

    Nice refurbish project. Amazing how easy those metal shears cut with the compound leverage. Owning such a tool allows you to make a lot of really interesting and needed projects now... Thumbs Up!

  • @tyn999
    @tyn999 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I know it's a lot of work, but I think the finish would be better if you sanded down the weld on the handle...
    Anyway, it was very satisfying to watch the restoration!

    Absolutely shocked he left that weld on the handle.

    • @bowietwombly5951
      @bowietwombly5951 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same, although I actually liked the finished look with the contrast in materials and colors. Maybe he had the same problem as the other weld where it was just ludicrously hard and it would have been an insane amount of effort to grind it down.

    • @sergiocerda5709
      @sergiocerda5709 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I thought the same. The whole restoration was flawless, but that weld...... Awful

    • @survivalofthefittest409
      @survivalofthefittest409 ปีที่แล้ว

      That, and the paint job..and the cutter portion..and didn't look like he sanded down..or did anything with the handle, just painted right over it.
      I think I've been both spoiled & jaded by "My Mechanics", to does everything to as close to perfect as I've ever seen it lol.
      All that being said, I feel like a jerk saying any of this when it's alot more than I can do 😅
      But still...that weld tho 😂

    Another one saved! You will find this really good on black iron bar from Briclage, I use mine all the time, I like the little safety dangler that stops the blade coming down, the weld went glass hard because the weld pool took out some of the carbon in the cast iron, you could have annealed it with the torch, you will have noticed that the countersunk bolts holding the blade on were not standard countersink bolts, they have a much shallower countersink angle, the ones you made had standard countersink angles on them, that may cause problems later when you use this superb shear! Many thanks for posting! Chris B.

    When a weld is very hard you can temper it with heat and slow cooling. Stick it in your regular kitchen oven and slowly heat it up to max. about 500F leaf it for a couple of hours and slow cool.

    I love these videos, even though I am not, in any way, related to this kind of craftsmanship.
    Besides creating (very) satisfying videos, is there any benefit in restoring objects like this?
    Do people actually pay for restored old items, or is it just a hobby (where YT content is the actual winner)?
    Not trying to be blunt here, I am just really curious
    Keep the vids coming please :) :) :)

    Great job! Your electrolysis process would work much more thoroughly if the sacrificial electrode had as much surface area as the part being de-rusted.
    Good on you for your diligent work.
