I'm on my second Signal. I have multiple multi-tools all Leatherman of course and the Signal is the one I always edc. I would like for Leatherman to come out with a Signal MKII and include scissors.
I have the Wave, Surge, Supertool 300, Charge ps4 etc. The signal is hands down my favorite. The yellow implements are a bit gimmicky but the rest of the tool has a very basic, rugged and useful toolset. The hammer is great. Because of the basic, rugged nature of the tool its excellent to pair this with a swisschamp or similiar. That way you get a very well rounded toolset. Having two sets of very different pliers is surprisingly useful.
I have a Leatherman Signal, a Leatherman Micra, a pad of bits, a Leatherman ratchet driver and a Lenser torch. All sitting in a small Leatherman pouch. Use it most days.
I have the same pair for the same reason! I got the Cabela's tan color and clip it to my belt ALL the time. The one thing I found missing was a file, so I took the blade off and added enough washers at the pivot to make the file from the Wave fit. I thought the blade was too thick and I always have a knife on me anyway. Excellent review and I love the hammer feature too!
My old Signal saved my arse when the dual sport I had at the time had an electrical issue in the woods. I was able to get a fire to get me through the night and then in the morning I was able to bandage the bike enough to get me home. If I hadn’t had that tool I’d have been trying to push my bike out of the woods. I would strongly advise having it at least as a backup to your main gear. Stupidly it was my only gear on that ride. I have since built myself a full “oh shit” kit so if a ride ever goes sideways again I will be able to get through the situation more easily
I really appreciate you sharing that story. That's exactly what I preach to everyone, be prepared. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope what you shared encourages others to be prepared as well.
I've had a kick for years but last year I got a surge carried it for a few weeks but it's heavy and I never use all the extra gadgets on it so I've gone back to the kick mind you the surge is handy for the backpack
I have an original I've had since they came out, I too have a Gerber, a few actually plus the first first responder tool they made in the early 90's and a Sog, now since Christmas I got a leatherman oht, simply beautiful and beautifully simple. Just enough. Nothing to trip over everything is deliberate therefore simple.
@@IrishZombieNation honestly I wanted the mut because I love to shoot but the oht is going in my EDC, love my family, hope your Christmas was fantastic!! Thanks for the content!!
I always carried a wave+ but when i saw the leatherman signal it was like love at first sight lmao, i also have a victorinox classic SD as my scissor/tweezer and ofcourse a toothpick as extra tool (you never know when you need it after a good steak hahaha) that i got from my wife as a present, its been my EDC since then
I have the leatherman wingman and my latest one is the supertool 300 the next four I want to get is the mut and the signal and the wave and the micro one with the spring loaded scissors.
Thaks for honest review. It's still not perfect Leatherman but pretty close to it. As an outdoor multitool. I still have my original vintage Leatherman in outdoor use adn it still performs great. Its from the time when choises was Leatherman or Swizz Army. But now I think it would be time to upgrade my tool. Its cool to have emergency fire starter in tool and possibility to tune your blade on the go. At workshop I carry Gerber Center Drive. Mainly because of center drive and it takes standard 1/4" bits. But its just unnecessary heavy and bulky for outdoors.
That was an honest review and thanks for sharing I just got the surge from the wave+ and I like them both haven’t tried the signal as I’m outdoors just not outdoors men hehe thanks I subbed you have awesome reviews.
I have the Gerber Center Drive and Suspension multi-tools and they are nice for what I would use them for. The Center Drive is used at home, and I have two Suspension tools which I keep in my backpack, and EDC bag. They are all just backup tools since I have tools to do what these multi-tools does. The Center Drive is the most expensive at over 80.00 dollars, and the Suspensions cost around 25.00 dollars a piece. Leatherman is nice and so is the Swiss Knife brand, but I just happened to choose the Gerber's after dealing with them before.
I have yet to use the Centre Drive, but I have been wanting to for some time. I love the Gerber suspension as well. I've got one in my get home bag. Excellent tool for an excellent price. Thanks for watching.
The fire steel and the diamond sharpener are cool (didn't know the signal had them), but the Rebar seems like a better choice for a survival pack multitool, especially for $30-$40 on eBay.
On the scissors, I use a Leatherman Micra on my keychain. It's my daily carry, and goddamn did I not expect those scissors to come in handy so damn often. They're actually a pretty good set, much better than the foldout style
I have almost every Leatherman made,in cluding the Signal. The only thing I'd take exception to is how you held the knife when you demonstrated how to sharpen it. Because the diamond steel is so short, it would be much safer if you flipped the blade over, and shaprened it from the backside, pushing the steel away from you, and away from the blade. We do a LOT of camping, so I'm sharpening knives, axes, hatches, etc. all the time. I've had my share of stitches, and that was alwys because of working towards the edge!
I like that the bit tool folds away. I have the Skeletool Multitool and it bothers my hand when I try to use the pliers. The bit tip pressing into the palm of my hand pretty harshly. Think I might pick this one up.
Damn that was quick. Already picked one up at Bass Pro. I'm liking it so far. Thanks for the video. I wouldn't have been made aware of it for sometime without it.
The only zombie stuff on my channel refers to the fact that me and my buddies are all of Irish heritage, and we like to get drunk around the fire at night, and when we wake up the next morning or stumbling around like zombies trying to find her coffee. Thanks for watching!
You had me at deep pocket clip (you never see this feature on a multi tool) until I went to Amazon and saw its $120..I think I will stick with my Sog Sideswipe.
is it me or is there a large portion of that ferro rod you cant scrape because the plastic sheath is getting in the way? wonder if they could have put it in a ring so you could spin the whole rod around in the assembly.
I just have the leatherman oht, I need the mut for the AR, but I like the one you reviewed. Best part is the knife grind is on the right side for right hand carving. Lol
That's funny, I do the exact same thing with the Style, I keep it in the same sheath as my Leatherman Charge, I've even used it to open an item on my Charge I had trouble using just finger nails. Also the Style is TSA friendly, it has scissors and pliers and is fun for travel. Also a driver extension is cheap and handy to add to the Charge sheath along with another strip of driver bits.
It's a nice tool, the additional sharpener is a nice touch, it's a great tool for a survival kit. I'll stick with my surge for now though, I'll take the extra weight. When weight is an issue I'll just stick with my SAK.
Good video. I like that you thouht to combine 2 smaller tools to get everything you need. I agree with you that $100 is too much for the tool, I think $50 - $60 is about as much as I would pay for it.
Just bought one for the missus to give me for Christmas.Cost £112!!..Can,,t wait till we get a trade deal with the US as I love the quality of American products..The EU stick high tariffs on US stuff...Great review btw.
This tool saved the day on a couple of occations. I've used the firestarter to fire up the grill when nothing else was around to light it. Another time I got some line caught in my motor when I was out with the boat. Turns out the combo blade was great for undoing the mess that followed. My daily beater is the Victorinox WorkChamp though.
@@apmikalogran Check out Wenger 95 rescue. Sadly its not made anymore and there is no Victorinox version. If you are lucky some stores might still have them. Its a full size 130 mm tool so its as long as the ranger grip models.
My pre-viewing comment: I really have valued my Surge, particularly because it has the best scissors and it has the awl, attachments, etc., but I think I may have lost it as it's been a few months now and it isn't showing up in any of my bags, my truck, anywhere. Probably sitting on a rock next to a river somewhere. I've been kinda bummed about it and am now at the point that I'm considering buying something new (if said purchase will only serve to trigger the finding of my Surge - you KNOW that's going to happen). But, the Surge was always heavy. This relegated it to being carried rarely, and usually I had it in another bag instead of on my person. So, as an EDC the Surge was never really ideal, but it was a multi-tool I always kept at arms length. I even had the hex extension and attachments. I'm intrigued by this video and am going to have a follow-up comment once I've watched it. Crossing my fingers that this will be a good replacement, and lighter.
I realized while watching that my buddy actually has this tool. Def gets points for weight, bummed about the lack of scissors, but it has the awl, which is awesome. Tweezers and scissors are very underrated I think, so the addition of the Style CS is a nice idea. I'm sure I could find a way to use the hex nut as a key ring holder to attach the two in a pinch. AND, it has the bit holder. Definitely a consideration. I'd say, since it has an emergency ferro rod, some form of sure fire would be a great item to carry in the same sheath as the signal. You really don't NEED scissors on an outdoor tool, per se. Just hold your fabric, etc., spread out and stable on a good surface and pull said fabric/pull the knife, and you can do some decent cutting. So, yeah, thanks for the positive review!
I really wish they (or someone) would attempt a motorcycle multi tool. Most basic bike maintenance can be done with 3-4 small sockets, valve stem tool, tire spoons and a small handful of other tools that riders might find totally worth it. It wouldn’t have to be the smallest model ever either because you’re not walking around with it often. It would likely sit in a bag.
This is as quick as I can do, I don't get notifications on every comment that I receive. My answer to your question would be, it depends on what survival situation you're in. If I was in the woods I would want the signal. If I was in an urban environment I would want the wave. Hope this helps, appreciate you watching.
For me, I am using Signal daily in my work for a year. The size is perfect, so the pliers and pocket clip. I like the design. However I wish I would be able to get the blade with plain edge (I hate the serration - visually and practically) and with better quality steel. The whistle is useless, and the sharpener would not last long IMO and I dont like touching it while working with the multitool, so I removed it with the whistle.
I'm not a fan of serrations either, but with this one I don't really mind it. I agree though, I would have liked to had one without. Thanks for watching!
Irish Zombie Nation I thought I would get use to it, but no - every time I am opening the knife I have to be careful to not cut my thumb - it is too narrow there for my thumb... Luckily the serration is not so sharp there anymore.
Had mine around 20... I think it was the year it came out. treated it like trash for a while and it still would pass for a 2 year old lesser-tool. The micro-bit driver is rusting but it looks pretty damn good otherwise!
Thank you for a good review. Being someone like you who likes lightness. I would suggest the small Swiss army knife which has scissors(excellent) tweezers and a toothpick to put on your key ring. Cheap at less than $20, smaller and good quality. Try it you'll like it. I've gifted them and carried one for over 20 years, ta.
maybe I just don't get it 'cause I don't have a lot of personal experience in outdoor/survival activities but I always wondered why shoul people carry or suggest using a ferrocerium rod to start a fire when they are actually heavier than a BIC lighter and still the lighter does the job way better... just asking
That's a great question, and I appreciate you asking it. The reason a lot of outdoorsmen carry a ferro rod is because it is reliable in all conditions. You are correct, a Bic lighter does the job way better, it's faster and much lighter. However, a Bic lighter can run out of fuel. When it's extremely cold outside it's hard to get one to light. A ferro rod will work in all conditions, in the rain, in the extreme cold, all the time. It will never rum out of fuel. Depending on the size of the rod, they can start hundreds, even thousands more fires than one Bic lighter will. That all depends on how skilled you are with it, and the type of tender you're igniting with it. Still, I always carry a Bic lighter as well. I like to have multiple sources. One of the biggest pros to me with using a ferrocerium rod, is that it's just fun to use. It's nice to know I can start a fire without a mechanical item. It's more satisfying. I'm big on the idea that two is one, and one is none. I really appreciate your question and I hope I answered it to your satisfaction. It's rare that I get someone asking a honest and intelligent question nowadays. I appreciate you watching the video. Sláinte!
@@IrishZombieNation Thank you for the very complete answer, I have started a couple of fires with the rod and I did it just for fun and to see how difficult it actually was... I see it more as a last resource type of thing than something that you are likely to do for real necessity, I am a smoker and I'm more likely to have 5 lighters in various pockets than a ferrocerium rod. I am considering buying the Leatherman Signal not really for the rod but for it's weight compared to other models (I had the Wave for years but then I lost it) - the rod will be for me a part of the tool that I hope I'll never get to use, even though it's there if I really need it. Salute!
Just like Swiss army knives with tooth picks and tweezers you will loose the two yellow things in no time. Leatherman have started making a lot of unnecessary garbage of late. The Wave is nearly all you need domestically and out in the field it can replace half a tool kit.
I have yet to lose either of those items, but I get your point. And I agree, Leatherman has been making a lot of unnecessary crap lately. The stupid Leatherman tread bracelet/man jewelry is probably the top of the retarded scale. I also agree with you about the Wave. I recently upgraded to the Wave + and I love it. I have a review up on that if you want to check it out as well. Thanks for watching!
Have you bought the Leatherman accessory screwdriver bit kit for your Surge? Looks like that new tool you have there would be able to use them too. I think there are close to 20 tips.
Thank you so much for the idea with the Leatherman Style CS. I've been EDCing the Leatherman Signal and Raptor and it's just too much weight. 9oz is a more manageable weight to EDC with your setup.
I weighed it with the case to show the total weight needed to carry on you. Since the Signal has a pocket clip included in its weight I thought I'd compare to how I carry the Surge.
I wish they created other tools that could replace the fero rod. Light would be ideal for my needs. Or extra bit holder. Just no need for the fire starter. But that's just me. Been edc a wave for a decade or two.
Love Leatherman, have several different ones. Was an mechanic in the Air Force and actually wore out my first original Leatherman. When did this come out? Will probably now have to find one and buy it now. LOL

Ive had my wave for 13 years...
Had mine around 20... I think it was the year it came out. treated it like trash for a while and it still would pass for a 2 year old lesser-tool. The micro-bit driver is rusting but it looks pretty damn good otherwise!
Thx dude, awesome
The base (hammer) is magnetic so you don't lose nails
Salute!
Awesome video brother. I thought those were a gimmick when they first came out too. I personally love my Wave. I also use an RAE gear holster.
The Sidekick...don't leave home without it.
Thanks for watching!
i love mine, got it on sale so it was a good deal.
Right on. Thanks for watching.
Just found your channel love your stuff man keep up the good work new sub
Much appreciated! Thanks for the sub!
Cool 😎 review dude👍
Wow i have been wanting a lighter multi-tool but I don't know if I want to spring the $100.00. Thank for the info!!!
Have you bought the Leatherman accessory screwdriver bit kit for your Surge? Looks like that new tool you have there would be able to use them too. I think there are close to 20 tips.
Yes, I do have the bit kit as well as the bit extender accessories. They do work with this tool as well. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for the idea with the Leatherman Style CS. I've been EDCing the Leatherman Signal and Raptor and it's just too much weight. 9oz is a more manageable weight to EDC with your setup.
I think this is geared for survivalists, bug out bags, emergency survival type tool.
And the outdoorsmen.
Leatherman, PLEASE make a left handed Wave+.
The SideClip was the best Leatherman. discontinued?
Why are you weighing the Surge with the case?
I weighed it with the case to show the total weight needed to carry on you. Since the Signal has a pocket clip included in its weight I thought I'd compare to how I carry the Surge.
How much does your bead weigh
I wish they created other tools that could replace the fero rod. Light would be ideal for my needs. Or extra bit holder. Just no need for the fire starter. But that's just me. Been edc a wave for a decade or two.
Its a survival tool, not a city edc
The Pickle cool I dont live in a city. Almost perfect alternative to my wave except for the wasted space of the firestarter.
do the wire cutters make it thru fence wire?
Depends on what whether it's the gauge of chicken wire or the gauge of barbed wire. Chicken wire yes, barb wire no
Irish Zombie Nation Very helpful thank you! 👍
Gerber Diesel, best thing I've ever bought. Great for outdoors and EMS use.
I carry 2 leather men tools on hunts now, it is hard to hold the other end of a bolt with just your fingers.
I carry a wingman that i found on the ground and it awesome
nice review
You have awesome videos my friend. ✔️ Something about your videos makes me looking forward to more of your videos 😇😇
Thank you, I greatly appreciate your kind words.
Gerber + Leatherman = Gerberman. That is what I carry!
But I love blooming onions!! Peace from Texas...
So do I! Thanks for watching!
Great review. Need to look into getting one.
Love Leatherman, have several different ones. Was an mechanic in the Air Force and actually wore out my first original Leatherman. When did this come out? Will probably now have to find one and buy it now. LOL
This model has been out for about a year or two. I'm a collector of Leatherman myself. Appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos, and thank you for your service.
Cool, thanks ....
Thanks for watching!
I like it but im still using the wing man and a gerber dime on the keys cheers bro
I use my Style CS more than anything else these days.
I would buy this, but I do not like that the sharpener and the ferro-rod are exposed at the outside. I still like my Victorinox Multi tools much more.
So an updated wave basically?
No, not even close. If you want to see an updated Wave then watch my review on the Wave+.
Good review.
You seem like a good shit,
I'm going to sub.
