I love how even after the decluttering Matt is STILL leaving his socks on the desks at 19:38, Steph really wasn't exaggerating
There’s another one at 21:03
Oooo Easter egg 😂❤
And they committed a whole theory to Matt's sock habits
@@RosalynaSeraphina I have a sneaking suspicion that those are theorist socks and that's actually a sort of merch ad for the keen eyed theorists. It's all intentional guys. Always has been. That's just the kinda guy Matt is lol. Ofc this is merely a theory...
@@ninsophy9798 A- ..wait what type of theory would that be?
I think theres a lot of scientific basis for feng shui, although specifically organizing my living space like an exam room sounds like a nightmare lol that would raise my stress levels so much, even looking at the minimalist barebones office space made me anxious
My mother had that pineapple crystal with her swarovski collection--I always took it out of the cabinet to ping the leaves, too!
This whole episode reminds me of the effectiveness of 5S strategies to make working spaces more efficient.
21:50 Well that's because she missed the color balance of Feng Shui. Everything is either beige, black, or white. You basically _only_ have wood representation (with the _tiniest_ amount of Earth from the plants).
Yah
Can we get a follow up video in like a month or so? Cause a lot of those feelings and whatnot could just be from a clean room or a change in furniture and your environment. I often feel that after I clean my room or rearrange it, but it goes away after a little while. I am tempted to now get a indoor plant to try that.
i don’t think ive ever seen ash before! i’m so happy that i can finally put a face to the name!!
12:25 😂😂😂
lol I love Ash and Tamar 🤣🤣
we NEED to see more of them
I am now going to rearrange my room. dope
The rats in my walls could use a little space.
Nope...If I rearrange my stuff and close it off behind doors and boxes, I'll just forget it exists
Feng shui is definitely very interesting although i think i might panic a little inside everytime i would walk in that room cause of how *empty* it is 🥴 (i think it's cause i'm more type B in the brain and i work on things best when creative and i see things that remind me of memories and usually those can spark creativity)
Ash is so real for the "If I can't see it, it doesn't exist" thing.
Out of sight, out of mind, x 10!
That’s a reason why even on my devices, (especially my iPad as I use that the most. And yes, I’m using it right now to watch YT and type this comment), I try to hide all the apps and software that I don’t need or distract me from my Home Screen! Also, all the apps that I use regularly I merge into one of those app cluster things on iOS devices, and I separate each type of app into its own cluster! (Drawing, animation, video, audio, etc. all in one cluster, and the Social media platforms that I use the most in another cluster!)

Ha, same. Oddly enough, I started cleaning a little before I hit play, and now I want to break down all these doggon boxes I have around the house from past packages. This video also has me thinking about moving my table around to see what works for me. ...I hope this doesn't snowball, lol, because more thoughts are coming to mind. o-o'

Yes @dearmodern needs to come help them!!!
As a professional interior designer, I'm so excited to see these principle discussed. That's exactly what Feng Shui is, it's not a huge fix, it's subtle in the help it provides. I'm so passionate that a well planned room can change the comfort levels of the space and it was great to see the desks moved to positions I personally would've been so much more comfortable with. Not necessarily Feng Shui related but there is something to be said about the proportions of the objects added as well. They touched on the rugs being too small, which they were, but the mirrors weren't sized correctly either and felt disconnected with the rest of the interior decorations.
I am bummed to hear that Steph worked with a snobby interior decorator, it's such a mixed bag sometimes but I'd encourage her (and anyone looking to hire a designer) to shop around! There are so many wonderful designers out there that would be more then happy to work with their clients!
I 100% relate to Ash's sentiment of creating an environment where one has no choice but to focus. I've not been diagnosed with ADHD or anything, but during exams at school, an environment in which i was forced to do work, i was able to do my work pretty easily, but anywhere else, I have trouble doing much of anything, theres just too many distractions. I wonder if changing my room around and doing the whole Feng Shui thing will emulate that exam room, no distractions, just work feeling
"Yes, right now I feel so much more inspired and motivated to put stuff away, but when stuff *is* away, I. forget. it. exists."

@ 24:39 - I like how one of Matt's socks still made its way onto Stephanie's desk, albeit hidden behind her computer 😂
As someone who also has ADHD, changing your space is immensely helpful, but they're things that Feng Shui actively dissuades. For me taking cabinet doors off and leaving them open, using clear drawers, and keeping mid-process projects out in the open have all helped me navigate my environment and finish the projects I start
All of this. My husband and I have ADHD and we use a modified version of Feng Shui that also encourages our ADHD in the best way.
I have noticed that if I leave stuff out in the open, that doesn't have to mean I'm going to work on it. Sometimes I leave it there, and that becomes the unread book's new home. A book from 2021 is currently a permanent fixture on my nightstand. It might help, and NOT doing it won't help, certainly, but it's no guarentee.
Out of sight, out of mind can be true in a negative way as well. Having things visibly there, but organized is really great in some situations.
ADHD definitely has a thing with object permanence. As soon as it is out of sight it is forgotten which is bad
Guidelines, not rules! Just do what you can and do what works for you.
Been thinking about reorganizing my room for a while. Thank you for making this episode, it's motivated me to change my room's layout today.
Quotes from Steph:
“I genuinely touch the thinky rock.”
“When it comes to this week, I’ve felt more positive about my own behind… ness.”
"If your feeling overwhelmed lay on the circle" got some laughs out of me.
As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD, I definitely relate to the object permeance issue. I will forget anything from a book I just bought to stationary to snacks in my fridge. I am intrigued by this video though, definitely need to declutter my space!

I’d love to see the Theorists return to this in a month or two to see if it has any difference. I remember when Feng Shui was BIG NEWS back in the late 90s (yeah, I’m that old) and it filled so many tv shows, magazines and books.
I remember a few daytime tv shows tested it out (here in the uk anyway!) and they all swore that it made a huge difference…
It’s interesting that everyone liked the green in the spaces. From what I’ve read, green is always called the creative colour (I don’t care what DHMIS says!) so maybe that marries up?
I reckon it does make a difference, but not for any woowoo reasons. More that it opens up the space and creates a calmer, less distracting environment and prevents dust build-up. As well as this try out, it would be a fascinating deep dive in future.

A couple years ago Steph had mentioned a woman's blog about how you should go through all of your belongings, ask yourself "do I really need this item" and "do I even use it enough each day", and if the answer is no, get rid of it or donate it. I followed it and felt less messy and better. I wonder if Steph remembered that while filming this video. 🤔

As a architect I knew that the redecorating would help, cause the ambient around us really influences our day to day lives in a lot of little ways that in the end have a big impact. I’m really glad that Ash acknowledged the lack of Object Permanence that most ADHDers experience. Cause I struggle with the same thing. That’s one of the reasons that I have clutter everywhere (my organized chaos) and it’s the reason I’m so hesitant to get rid of things. With that being said, I think I’m going to try and implement some of these in my apartment (maybe with my roommates??) and maybe I’ll be more focused.
What's helped me: store things in clear containers AND cover one's shelving with curtains.
That way the immediate effect is reduction of visual clutter, but then whenever I need something, I pull back the curtain and can see where everything is. It's not perfect, but was the best compromise I've found for my ADHD self.
14:30 "and I was taking my cue from the FOUNDATIONAL STRUCTURES OF TYE HOUSE" has to be the best comeback I've ever seen, the funniest line I've heard this month and and I don't even think he was trying to be funny
Sorry Matpat, the memory loss comes complimentary with ADHD. We live on a permanent daily shipment of diet alzheimers.
Whenever Ash gains enough chaos juice to conjure a physical visual form, you know it's gonna be a great video >:D
I thought that they were just a disembodied AI manufactured for sole use during GTLive streams.
And it's amazing that they ran out of chaos juice right as the video ended!
Ash forgetting things that are not in line of sight is too real
Quite similar to the "clean your room" principle. Improve your closest environment such as it does not create unnecessary distractions, stress or frustrations.
Jordan Peterson approves
Fungshishi has actually helped me when it comes to my room as it's now muchhh nicer lol.
-Steph :getting angry about interior designing
-Matpat :just sad and tired
I understand where Ash is coming from - I’m adhd and I’ve ALWAYS been sensitive to the energy of a room
In their results, I wish they had shared some more thoughts about the furniture arrangement of the room. Especially since that's such an important part of feng shui. Both the rooms in the video had the desks turned to face into the room instead of the wall. For me personally, that is a MASSIVE difference and I feel much better facing into the room. I feel more in control of the room and at ease with the space around me. But they didn't really elaborate on this in the video.
I also feel like a LOT could be improved with that office in the new apartment. Yes, it looked sterile, because it was. Be careful not to confuse "get rid of clutter" with "get rid of all the decorations." It's okay to decorate. (Keeping in mind that it's a new apartment and they're still moving in, of course.) And at night, I would recommend using two or three small lamps placed around the room instead of that horrendous overhead light. I also recommend lighting color that's in the 2850K to 3000K range, which is kind of like the lighting you'd expect in an art gallery, cooler than incandescent but warmer than fluorescent.
This. I'm not into fung shui myself, but when I think 'fung shui' I think of furniture arrangement more than anything else. While the video is fun it feels like it's focusing a lot more on just decluttering than actual fung shui lol
@@silence2314 Exactly. And staying tidy and organized isn't even a uniquely feng shui idea! It just feels like they continually lost focus of the whole idea throughout the video.
The lights recommendation is great, thank you!!
@@Shako_Lambwelp that just shows that they only scraped the surface of feng shui. But tbh i dont blame them. My mom studies it and like even after 5 years or so there is still much for her to learn. Though i would recommend to ask someone who knows a little more about feng shui if they were to make another similar video (though i doubt it).
I actually deal, similarly to Ash, with bad object permanence when I put things away. It is why I get anxiety about cleaning personal spaces like my room cause I fear that I'll forget about something's existence long enough for me to not remember where I put it, which has happened more times than I would like to admit.
Feng Shui seems like one of those things that probably does have benefits if you are doing it correctly but they are almost certainly overstated by those trying to make a profit off of it. What I would expect to be the ACTUAL purpose of Feng Shui is to be mindful of your environment and the way you set it up rather than the positioning of the chairs in a certain way itself having some sort magic effect over your mood. Being mindful of ones environment is believed to be able make somebody feel more in control and reduce anxiety. I feel like Feng Shui has gotten reduced to only its aesthetic elements which got rid of the aspect of it that was actually healing which is the mindful part of paying attention to how the arrangements of a space effects its functionality aswell as your emotions.
Feng Shui seems to be an early version of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. The mysticism of it seems to be more of a mix of pneumonic devices and proto-psychological reasonings. Certain layouts work better for productivity, sense of security, and minimization of distraction. All three of these things generally improve mood.
The
Real stuff is more complicated. Even if it’s ‘ fake but there is like actual rules.. counters.. items its not just round, and clutter lol
There are ying yang mirrors, following the North Pole, moving furniture in certain angle, etc. it’s actually pretty fun.. cause you follow the “ master’ and they tell you everything…
The stuff they did in the video is western fuen shui.. so it’s not the same at all.. you don’t have the same “ experience”
12:50 - Them (and me 😂): "Oh noooo...." 😳😅😂
it's nice to see the other members of the team shine. Normally only see head editor Dan doing voice overs for game and film theory and even then its only the voice over. It's nice to see team member's introduced by their little sprites/jpegs and then to actually see them.
Something I learned at a young age is that your eyes always see everything in your vision even if you're not actively focusing on it. Decluttering helps a lot to keep your mind from processing all of the unnecessary stuff so you can use more brain power on what actually matters

@@LangThoughts Thinking is not your forte, is it. "They" can be used regardless of gender. It's a language thing not a hip thing. Correcting something like this is sad for the school that taught you.
Ash's reaction is the most relatable and helpful for me. I also forget things exist if I don't see them, so I need things spread out where I can see them. Though I've recently learned they can be visible but also organized.
22:30 " we need to look into that" they said already they have ADHD 😂 thats my every day too
I've used some of the basics of Feng Shui my whole life because my house is awkwardly laid out so everything had to be laid out in a specific way to make the room functional. My parents are also strict about clutter so I can confirm that it really does help tons
Just about to rearrange my room so perfect timing on this episode!!
Feng Shui is kinda real, especially when you think about how many hoarders are super depressed when around their clutter.
i suppose your house reflect how you live
My grandma is a hoarder but she never seems depressed. Definitely has some anxiety/hypochondria tho
It is a feedback cycle with a lot of mental illnesses. The declining mental health perpetuates clutter and less cleaning/tidying up and the declining quality of the living space further negatively affects the mental health.
It's causation vs correlation I think.... Like , the clutter can definitely make me feel worse/ I feel a little better when I am able to deal with cleaning.... but things get cluttered because I'm dealing with my mental health/ physical struggles.... It makes my struggles worse cause of the thoughts of " you're a failure, you should be able to do this" .... And I feel a little better because I "finally" was able to "Do the thing"
As someone with ADHD, I can really feel the "if I can't see it, it doesn't exist" thing. My bedroom doubles as my leatherworking workshop, and one of the most useful changes I've made was adding in a pegboard for nearly all of my tools. Before I did that, there would be tons of tools I would forget I even had simply because I forgot I had bought them, or didn't remember where they went.
Nice timing, I just decided to really tackle the clutter in my bedroom because I've noted how much it actually affects my mood. I bought some better closet organization that's getting here just after Turkey Day. I'll watch this again when it comes. Also happy Turkey Day everyone!
My room is constantly cluttered and I’ve tried for years to keep it clean. Stuff is left everywhere. I want to make it a place I can actually move around in and enjoy. Thanks for the inspiration, Team Theorist!
P.s. Maybe I’ll post updates to keep me accountable lol
Ask a friend for help! Even if they just sit around chatting to you while you clean it makes a big difference. It’s better when there’s two of you doing the work though, and then you can treat them to coffee or lunch 😊
Commenting before 8:30 because I'm greatly enjoying Matt and Steph roasting each other for their habits in this video. Style Theory is becoming "TH-camr Lifestyle Unveiled" to me, ever since Steph mentioned in the first shower episode "here we are at our shower, the one place I thought I would never be exposing to the internet" (or something like that).
I'm 16 seconds in - I'm sick and miserable (its a cold but I'm a baby) but seeing Ash in this episode filled my heart with Joy :D
The fact that I relate to Ash makes me think I have undiagnosed ADHD 😅
I also have a tendency to forget a LOT of random things that are probably useful but I also remember random fun facts that don't really matter 😂
I'm not nearly as stressed though. Something I learned when I had a painting class was to just go with the flow.
Basically, I shut out anything that I'll overthink about because I do better coming up with a plan on the spot for some things 😅
Edit: I personally am interested in redesign and I rearranged some things in my room. All I have to say is that I probably need to get a comfier chair since the chair I have isn't really comfortable for someone who really doesn't like the feeling I get when I'm sitting in a certain position due to being skinny.
Not only do I feel numb sometimes but I get squeamish...hard to explain the sensation 😅
The word intentional keeps popping up. And I think that's something that Feng Shui actually helps the most with. It helps you feel like you have more control over your space. Like there is control in the chaos of life, and I think that's so important.
25:20 This is not a healthy way to deal with ADHD. It could work and improve productivity, but in the long run, it could be severely damaging to the person's well-being and emotional balance. That's why it's not used as a proper learning technique.
As a person with ADHD, I absolutely feel the "if it's put away it no longer exists". I forgot where my watch charger was for a week and a half because my roommate put it away in a drawer lol

For me taking cabinet doors off and leaving them open, using clear drawers, and keeping mid-process projects out in the open have all helped me navigate my environment and finish the projects I start
As someone with AuDHD (ADHD/autism) I definitely do believe Fung-Shui is a thing. I have an apartment that has a "sunroom" instead of your traditional balcony and it lets in so much sunlight and I love it, and I have lots of vine lights hanging in my apartment to give the plant feel.
I also feel extreme stress when I have an extremely messy apartment and I feel relief when it's on the cleaner side. I also use open "doom" boxes for regular clutter so I have a place for it and don't tear the apartment apart looking for something lol
Also, Ash, you look absolutely stunning wearing hoops 🥰
Edit: 22:30 to combat object permanence issues I store everything in clean bins/buckets or baskets and label bins as well so I know what's the general category of stuff inside; also, to combat sterileness of an environment I add artwork I enjoy, in particular in my living room I have lots of portraits of cats in different historical garbs/references and it gives me so much joy to look at
12:09. Did Matthew's monitor turn off because he turned around? The timing on that was crazy
As someone with ADHD, I can totes relate to the 'things in drawers drop out of my memory /existence' problem. I wish minimal style could have a solution that also allowed my to see all of my things at a glance... Lol
I want more Mat and Stephanie videos. Their dynamic is perfect, which is obvious because they’re husband and wife
short answer: yes, feng shui will cure all my depression
also your chaotic commentary was so funny
I think that Feng Shui might not cure my depression but any content from Matpat will :)
We makin it out of depression with this one 🔥🔥🔥🗣️🗣️🗣️
I already knew the answer before watching this... of COURSE the room layout and surroundings effects your stress levels. I know because my house is a mess, and I am always stressed. I always feel more at peace in a clean uncluttered room. It feels pretty obvious to me.
(of course its not a cure though... NOTHING is a 100% cure).
Ash, Steph, AND Amy?? what did we do to deserve this dream team in one video!
20:15 Okay, is that musically keyed, and if so where can I buy one? Having a heptatonic plant ornament on my desk sounds like a fun calming distraction.
My husband and I have been steadily working through our cabinets and cupboards, getting everything organized. And just removing the tiny irritants of having to dig through shelves or having things fall out when cupboard doors are opened has already improved our moods.

"Why don't 'you' take a measurement class?"

"Why don't 'you' see how EXPENSIVE THEY ARE?!?!" 11:05
22:25 Turns out, this is just ADHD. Maybe clear containers in the cubbies would help? That's why I keep my main projects in view and the supply (not immediately being used) elsewhere.
Being someone who grew up and exists in chaos clutter to where walking around is an issue, figuring out how to be organized is something I've been teaching myself since Covid hit. I actually just cleaned my room to where you could see the entire floor (minus under furniture) yesterday. It's fantastic and I HOPE I can keep it up. The back room where I put a lot of stuff in though....... ok there's a lot more work to be done. But it's a start. Next will probably be go through my shelves and drawers to see what stays and what goes. It is nice not having to look around things to see the bottoms of my monitors
