      I store quite a bit of frozen food. The chest freezer I bought new (what a concept!) has a bunch of pizzas and about 90 pounds of bagged ice in it right now. It's as full as it can be (7 cubic feet).
      It never hurts to keep extra food around, especially nonperishable stuff.

    Nice find! These freezers were a staple of my childhood - just about every home and business had at least one.
    The thing with the neon lamps is interesting. My guess is the minuscule amount of high frequency noise, propelled either through the power lines or through the air, is enough to create the needed extra ionization to light the lamp.

  • @DimensionDude
    @DimensionDude 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good find! A bit of contact paper will hide that rusty top ;)
    As for the neon lamp thing, it's not electrical noise. Try shining a flashlight on the lamp in the dark and it will light up. Photons from any outside source add just enough energy to kick the lamp into conduction. Oddly enough, the light generated by the neon lamp isn't enough to keep it going once the outside source is removed.

      I noticed a similar rather irritating neon issue many years back while staying in a hotel in Colorado. When I switched the lights off, the room would randomly flicker an ambler glow, which got annoying as I was trying to sleep. Yet, when I switched the lights on and had a look around, I couldn't find the source of anything flickering. While looking around standing up and turning on/off my flashlight, I quickly found the culprit - A neon lamp on the wall-attached hair dryer. With the flashlight lit, the neon lamp lit continuously. When I turned off the flashlight, it random made a bright amber flash. I've never seen a neon lamp do that here in Ireland, probably due to the higher 230v mains voltage here.

    If one can deal with rust caused by super-thin modern finishes, it's possible to acquire perfectly decent (and not terribly old) appliances for cheap or free. We had a similar freezer and neatly glued a piece of FRP on the top...problem solved. Even caulked the edges all pretty-like lol.

    I care little for the "Curb Side Find" of a Freezer, it's more interesting to me how you make it sound so enchanting. As always great job! On the other hand my wife may want one of these someday.

      It is truly the thrill of the hunt, for those of us not interested in killing an animal and preparing it appropriately.
      I'd also make the *bold* statement that an old freezer and a video about such is better than 95% of what's on TV.

      Indeed the 'thrill of the hunt' and the joy of the catch, when you realize you just picked up a microwave that costs 200 UK pounds rather than 50.... and all that's wrong is that the control fuse has blown :D

    Seems repairclinic has a new gasket for the freezer for just under $88 and a new door key for around $5. so, in the future, assuming you feel the necessity to spend money on it, the option is there. at that point of time of replacement you could then un-ding the handle, too. but, sweet find! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit jealous.

    Can you do a video on sandblasting and repainting the Kenmore freezer? I would love to see a before/after restoration video. Speaking of restoration, I still don't get as to why some people still throw away perfectly good working old appliances when it could have been refurbished.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a sandblaster, so I won't be doing that. If anything, I'll clean up as much of the rust as I can. Then I'll get some "paint over rust" stuff, lay that down as a first coat and follow it up with appliance enamel.

    Sealed systems are fine if not STORED on their side, and yes, let them sit. I have seen a fridge blow after being tilted,. but that's because someone plugged it in before it was settled. It went off quite spectacularly. What happened was the thermal cutout failed to work right, so the jammed or plugged compressor got so hot... it burned out its wiring and shorted to ground.

    Looks like once in a while you can still find good stuff in the curve yet. Outside little on the rough side but the most important the inside is clean and works.

  • @AverageJoe2020
    @AverageJoe2020 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you about putting fridges and freezers on their side, done it many times as you have and never had a problem.
    The most thorough way to clean fridges etc. after scrubbing out the crud a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide kills off the remaining organics, bleach doesn't work as there is such a weak solution of Sodium Hypochlorite that you are in effect "feeding "the organic stuff rather than killing it off.
    As for freezer smells.....
    I might be able to beat you on the unpleasant smell competition,
    Years ago I did a lot of Urbex (Before it was called that) and came across an abandoned warehouse, found an open window, slipped in and opened an inner door into the main storage area to be hit by a wall of unbelievable stank, like death.
    The place was full of disused commercial production butchery machinery and slaughterhouse accoutrements,
    Not nice at all, amazing mould over everything as well.
    Cheers Bill.
    J.

    You can go to sears repair center or order a key if need be and also get a new seal for the lid and if it has them the pins to hold the gasket in place with that you have a new fully functional freezer. We have one in the garage I knew it would be used for a work bench from time to time so I cut a piece of plywood to fit the top and siliconed the plywood to the top, worked great and the wife had no complaints as long as I cleaned off my stuff before she wanted to open the freezer.

      I don't have this freezer any longer. I took it to my HVAC/R classes as a demonstration of another self contained refrigeration system, since it had a very nice illustration of the system layout on the back panel. They don't have a lot of that equipment around. I offered it to the program, but they didn't want it. Ultimately, I donated it to the Salvation Army. It showed up on their sales floor and was gone in about a week.

      Let me know what you come up with, though there will certainly be duplicates. Around here, those were very popular, probably because they were cheap. Despite this, they've held up well. Ye olde fluorescent lamp ballasts used to actually have Ne2 indicators in them used to start the lamps. This is what often caused the ticking sound while they started up.

  • @notyoung
    @notyoung 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The indicator light is neon and as they age they lose some of their ability to light. The overhead lights provide just enough additional energy for the neon to fire. Try lighting the indicator with a bright flashlight.

    • @ACRPC-dot-NET
      @ACRPC-dot-NET 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      notyoung exactly, I've got several neon light switches in my house that do this, ANY light source shining on them is enough to get them to light up again, flashlight, cell phone screen, sunlight from window, etc

  • @Xyspade
    @Xyspade 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably a lot said this already but yeah, as neon lamps get older, they can be affected by a few things. Usually light, temperature, or humidity, but sometimes the flickering isn't affected by any outside stimuli, it's weird. I've never seen electrical line noise be a factor though.
    Nice find, and I hope the rust cleans up semi-easily.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's my understanding that the neon lamps fail not only from contamination caused by depletion of electrode material, but also potentially from gas leakage due to imperfect sealing.
      What surprises me is that light can be a sufficient stimulus to make a tired neon lamp work again, at least for a while. Others have indicated such to be the case, and offered the suggestion to try pointing a flashlight at the neon indicator lamp to get it going again.
      Still, I don't think it's completely ridiculous to think that electrical line noise and distortion of the waveform (or harmonics) could, with some help, get a reticent neon lamp to work again. I say this because I've noticed neon lamps that came into working order (or closer to) when another light was on, despite that light not being "seen" by the neon lamp. The same with highly inductive loads like motors or even switchmode power supplies.

    • @Xyspade
      @Xyspade 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      uxwbill Oh, noise definitely could be. I'm no electrician; these are just based on my observations from the power strips I own and have seen. Plus my home probably doesn't have a whole lot of line noise. I'll leave that up to someone more knowledgeable than me to confirm.

    the 198 prefix to the model number does indicate that this is a Whirlpool built unit. If you have the serial number along with the full model number you can find out its date of manufacture here: www.appliance411.com/service/date-code.php

    I gather that it was produced in 1981. Sears always had the first 2 digits in the Model after the "3-set" (116, 198, 110) stand for the year, be it letters or numbers.

    @jsciarri 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was thinking it was made in 1983 or earlier, due to the older design of the Sears logo. Looks like someone already pinpointed it by the serial number being made in September 1982, which ironically is when my parents got married.

    Man, I own one of these now after purchasing a home. If only it would work! Condenser warm to the touch but never cools!

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given that the condenser is warm, there may be a restriction in the system preventing the proper flow of refrigerant. Unfortunately, these generally are not worth repairing, especially a model as old as this one. Anything involving service to the coils is almost impossible, given the blown in foam insulation and extensive disassembly that would be required.

  • @glenccim
    @glenccim ปีที่แล้ว

    • @uxwbill

      The only real fix is replacing the gasket. You might be able to glue or clip/clamp it in place somehow, though such fixes are only likely to be temporary.

    Do the authorities give you flack for picking things up off the curb?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at all. Around these parts, it's basically considered that someone has surrendered their rights to a piece of property when they discard it. Sometimes I'll ask as a courtesy if anyone happens to be around, but I've never been hassled even when I picked stuff up right in front of the people who tossed it. To the best of my recollection, I've never been told that I couldn't take something from someone's trash.
      Nobody was around when I picked up this freezer, and the house nearby was completely empty. Someone had left some lights on.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +uxwbill that's something I never understood, why do some people get mad for taking their garbage?
      It's obvious they didn't want it, what's the problem with letting someone else take it away for free?
      I understand security with taxes and other forms, but those are supposed to be shredded anyways.

    • @Madness832
      @Madness832 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, it was reminding me of a story I read a few years back (on Consumerist, I think); about a guy in NY who got fined somewhere around $2,000 for grabbing an AC unit off the curb (despite having permission from the person who put it there). There was apparently "garbage police" watching it & he ran afoul of some law because he transported it in a motorized vehicle (!!!). Ultimately, he fought the city in court & they threw out the case.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard of such laws existing in larger cities and more populated areas. Which is just another reason why I'd never want to live in such a place (beyond its never being truly quiet or dark at night). Clearly some lawmaker didn't have enough to do, or had a vested interest in making sure nobody could recycle anything in the best way possible (by reusing it).
      For years my father would pick up appliances and electronics while doing his day job (his employer didn't care). Later, we'd repair them, usually right there on the driveway and ultimately sell them. Some didn't even need any repair. Perhaps the best of all was the fully loaded avocado green Maytag washing machine that my mother swore up and down he'd never sell because nobody wanted an appliance in that color any more. No sooner than we'd repaired it and were doing a load of laundry on the driveway, two guys pulled up in a van and bought the machine right in front of my mother's disbelieving eyes.
      I tell this story not only because I find it highly amusing, but to underscore the fact that for years, my father and I had our pick of everything that people threw away. And in the higher income neighborhoods, that was nice some stuff. It'd sit and nobody would touch it until the trash collection came along. When the economy fell apart in 2009 or so, suddenly the metal scrappers emerged in full force, driving old pickup trucks up and down the street in the early hours of the morning to get metal from whatever they could find in people's trash.

    I always love watching these videos, I have a similar situation where if I bring home roadside treasures to tinker with, I'll likely be spoken to vehemently about it. I can't explain it, but there is something both fascinating and oddly heartwarming about seeing supposedly "junk" appliances come to life. thanks for showing the freezer uxwbill, and I'm really curious about the neon situation there because I have an old computer power switch array. It's one that used to sit under a monitor and has individual power switches for Master, Computer, Monitor, Print, and Aux 1 and 2. Master, Computer, monitor, and aux 2 light up fine, but printer and aux 1 are faint, and I'm starting to wonder if either they aren't fully dead yet, or if the lights in the switches are being kept alive by the good ones on either side of them. Gave me something to look into.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes I can't win no matter what I do. :-) Back in the winter I spotted a Whirlpool washing machine set out on the curb. I was really going to pick it up and repair it -- something I hadn't done in almost two decades! The drain pumps on these things are often plastic bodied and with it being below freezing, I felt that the odds of its having cracked were just too great.
      When I told my father of this, his exact words were "you really let your skimmer leak". In other words, I *should* have picked it up!
      He and I used to do a pretty good business of picking up washers, dryers and even the odd stove to repair and sell.
      Cheezy though it may sound, there's something really satisfying to me about taking something that's either hopelessly dead or left for dead and seeing it come back to life. I'm not sure this is either of justifiable or logical, but one upon a time these things were brand new and sitting in a showroom for sale somewhere. People *cared* about them at some point. They *mattered* to someone. And when everyone else has forgotten, I'm the guy who comes along to remember and care once again. There are times I wish these things could tell stories.
      (I'm sure that sounds really stupid to some people.)
      Time gets even with all neon lamps, either through the gas charge leaking down/becoming contaminated or electrode wear within the lamp. Some are more susceptible than others. Only 46 years after it was made did the "surface units" NE2 lamp in my 1971 Hotpoint stove finally become weak, and I suspect it may have simply slipped away from the plastic lens through which it would shine. All the others (for the ovens) still work as new. Like LEDs, neon lamps need a series limiting resistor and I suspect some manufacturers just drove them too hard, leading to an accelerated demise.

    It's sad that the R12 compressor on that thing is so quiet compared to the R600a-gassed Husky branded fridge I have in my bedroom (for cold drinks and occasional sandwiches!), as it sounds like it's got a diesel generator in there at times, but, that's what happens when you let china build things, they just don't get it right... :\
    I know it's not the R600a gas at fault (as much as I distrust Isobutane for it's propensity to leak, catch fire and burn down London tower blocks) as the Bosch fridge I salvaged last year (& gave to the uncle as a swap for the Husky) is nice and quiet...

      The compressor in my mother's Whirlpool refrigerator is much the same way. Sometimes it starts and runs alarmingly loudly for a few seconds. Other times it's fine.
      Near as I can tell, only small refrigerators and freezers seem to be going the route of using isobutane for refrigerant. Dehumidifiers and room air conditioners now seem to be using R-410a exclusively. Perhaps the combination of isobutane and a fan moving air around the room is a very bad mix should something go wrong?
      I walked past a row of small refrigerators for sale in a Wal-Mart store and I could *smell* the isobutane.

    I have a newer 7 cubic ft chest freezer.
    It quit freezing. Is it possible to get to the condenser coils to clean them?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally, no. The condenser coil is usually built into the case assembly and you can't get at it. There has likely been a refrigerant leak, a restriction in the system or the compressor is no longer pumping/running. When these fail, it's usually a throwaway situation.
      *Caution* : a newer model freezer or refrigerator may be using a *flammable* refrigerant, such as butane or propane. Although there is very little refrigerant in the system, it could still start a fire if it gets out and is ignited somehow.

Thank you very much!

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, because that is how most window air conditioners are designed. Slinging the water around helps to cool the compressor, fan motor and most importantly, the condenser (outside) coil. Some units have an "overflow" hole and some don't.

      That's because a refrigeration system is a heat exchange device -- they move heat from one area to another.

    Uxwbill: thank you for your video!
    I have an old chest freezer myself. It was a used model and very old when I bought it from a guy who was selling it out of his garage. It has served me very, very well for The better part of 10 years.This winter, I got Covid, and still have it, so I was not able to defrost my freezer. There is lots of frost, and the food has been frozen. Until two days ago. I noticed that the frozen foods were not rockhard. Today, some of the meat is actually thawed out completely. I am astonished that there could be so much frost in a freezer, yet the food inside thawed out. The freezer is still making all the right sounds. There doesn’t appear to be any obstruction keeping it from closing. Any suggestions? I’d sure appreciate any ideas that you have. There’s just no way I can go out and shop for another, And I really don’t want to lose the winter food supply in it.

      Excessive frost can start to act as a form of insulation, keeping the cold from getting to where it needs to be. It can also make the thermostat operate incorrectly.
      Stuff that's thawed out completely needs to be prepared immediately or discarded. It's not worth taking the chance. If it's still partially frozen or at least cold (below 35F or so), refreezing is probably OK, but the taste and texture may not be as good. It's time to make defrosting the freezer a priority. You'll need some coolers or someone who's got extra freezer space and would let you borrow it for a while. Boiling water in a pan can be used with great care to speed the defrosting process. Just be careful not to damage anything by melting it. Never use a sharp object to remove frost, or it's new freezer time at that point.
      Sealed refrigeration systems are very reliable. Leaks are rare but they can happen. Controls can also fail. Repairs to the actual sealed parts of the refrigeration are almost always not worth it, and may not be possible depending upon where the problem is located.

      uxwbill: Tysvk 4 this; I have already moved all of the meat products that were still at least partially frozen, and heartbreakingly threw out one roast. I hope to finish up the process tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a day of making huge quantities of jam and preserves. :-)

    Neon lights start to flicker due to aging but Black lights/ultra violet lights makes a flickering neon light work like new as you put the ultra violet light super close to the neon light.
    I posted a video of the effects that a ultra violet light has with a flickering neon light a few days ago.

      It's common for small and rural towns to not have garbage collection, I'm from Muncie, Indiana where they have a very nice garbage collection service where you get big Toters you wheel out to the street but I bought a house in Hartford City which is the next county north and while they do have city garbage collection they have a bag limit and you have to go to the city hall and pay and they give you a sticker for each additional bag or for disposal of a large item like a TV and anything you put out has to be able to be lifter by hand since they still do manual collection.

      Nah, judging from the look of the Kenmore logo and the information cards on the inside-top of the chest, it's not from 2012. It's hard to place on the stylistic decisions made concerning appliances because it looks to have a few design choices common in the 70s and 80s, but overall I peg it as an 80's freezer. It just has that kind of look about it you know?
